Fundamental Skills Survey For students completing the Yamaha Junior Course 2nd Year Children acquire various skills through the music lessons at Yamaha.

Purpose of the Fundamental Skills Survey Let’s confirm the fundamental musical skills and motivation cultivated during lessons.

After completing the Fundamental Skills Survey On completion of ‘Fundamental Skills Survey,’ Yamaha provides higher-level courses where the targets are the ‘Piano Performance Grades’ or the ‘Electone Performance Grades’.

Thus, the ‘Fundamental Skills Survey’ is the entry level of the Yamaha Grade Examination.

The procedure for Fundamental Skills Survey

The assessment will be conducted in the following order, taking approximately 10 minutes.

Assessment of fundamental musical skills

Contents of Each Step

Step

1 Singing 2

Sing one song from Lyric Singing or Repertoire curriculum, using lyrics or 'Do, Re, Mi’.

Listen to the music played on the piano, and respond by singing with Do-Re-Mi.

Listening Melody

One melody from the 'Memory Singing by Solfege' curriculum learnt during regular lessons.

Harmony

Listen to three chords in a progression played on the piano, then respond by playing on Piano/Electone, or singing using solfege.

The chords are learnt during regular lessons (C major, G major, F major, D minor).

3 Playing

Play two repertoire pieces from “Primary 3, 4” or “Workbook 3, 4”.

4 Reading

Read/sing from the scores of the two pieces played on day of assessment.

Teacher will indicate the parts to be read.

Approximately two measures each from the treble and bass clef will be tested.

5 Creating

Play the accompaniment to the melody "The Dove" in "Primary 4".

6 Feedback Fundamental musical skills The assessor will evaluate the fundamental musical skills.

Application Please complete the application form and submit it together with the assessment fee, to the school staff at front desk.

You will receive notification of the assessment schedule in due course.

Assessment Process The Fundamental Skills Survey will be conducted by two certified Yamaha teachers ― including the class teacher!

Parents are welcome to observe the entire process.

Results Notification will be approximately 3 to 4 weeks after the assessment.

Evaluation will be based on the performance on day of assessment and on the overall progress in the regular lessons.

Comments on ( 1 ) achievement of ‘fundamental musical abilities’ of listening, singing, playing, reading and creating (2) development during 2 years aim to boost enthusiasm and encourage anticipation for the next level.
