When Music Director Toshi Shimada discusses Saturday's Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra concerts, he says, "Usually the 'Three Bs' are Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, but this time, Barber is in there instead of Bach."

So the concert at the Garde Arts Center will open with Samuel Barber's powerful Symphony No. 1, a concise and powerful piece that packs all of the sonic heft of a 40-­minute Romantic epic in a 20-­minute package.

Next up, the Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello is an oddity in two ways. First off, it's one of the few double concertos in the repertoire, and with the relatively soft-­voiced cello featured, it is long on interplay between the soloists, with carefully crafted orchestral voicings to complement the soloists. And second, it is usually played without a guest soloist, using the concertmaster and principal cellist from the orchestra as soloists. But ECSO principal cellist Alvin Wong took a position in Australia over the summer after signing on for the Brahms and will travel halfway around the world, setting, no doubt, a distance record for ECSO guest soloists. Joining Wong will be often-­featured ECSO concertmaster Stephan Tieszen.

Tieszen and Wong will host a pre-­concert conversation at 7 p.m. for ticket holders.

Alvin is coming back from Melbourne, Australia where he is currently employed by the University of Melbourne, Conservatorium of Music. The other pieces on the program are Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in D Major and Barber's Symphony No. 1 in one movement. Dominion Millstone Power Station is the sponsor for the featured soloists. LATE BREAKING NEWS! William Pruecil, Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster, cancelled his guest appearance scheduled for March 15. Mr. Pruecil underwent spinal surgery recently and will not be able to play for a period of time.. Stephanie Chase will perform the Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major in his stead. She is known for her recording of the concerto on period instruments. Ms. Chase has an impressive biography and has a special relationship with this orchestra. Her mother, Fanny, was a violinist with the ECSO under the baton of Paul C. Phillips in the early 90's. We are delighted to have Stephanie appear with us.

Tanglewood The Friends will once again sponsor a bus trip to Tanglewood. The performance is Sunday, July 20, 2014, featuring the classical superstar, Joshua Bell, conducted by the newly named music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Andris Nelsons. These tickets are sure to go fast.

Shimada reinvents “the Three Bs” for a fine ECSO performance

By Milton Moore Day Staff Writer New London – Music Director Toshi Shimada crafted a program for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra Saturday night that gave three lesser-­performed works by three well-­ known composers their moments in the spotlight. And each earned its bows, for very different reasons.

The concert at the Garde Arts Center opened with Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1, written in 1936 when Barber wa s just 26, a powerful work that many consider the great American symphony – and count me in that group.

Shimada and company were masterful in this concise and compressed 20-­minute symphony, swelling huge sonorities from a big orchestra augmented with bass clarinet, contrabassoon, extra brass and harp. This symphony is Barber, the reticent Romantic, again and again expressing the big gesture, often with laser beams of dissonance cutting through the huge crescendos, then holding back, never pressing too far.

The orchestra achieved such rich sonorities that it seemed as if the acoustics had suddenly improved in the hall. Yet even in this very densely contrapuntal score, Shimada was able to preserve a transparency that all the voices shine through.

This entire concert in many ways belonged to the ECSO s tring sections, as in the Barber and the Brahms and Beethoven that followed, play by each of the string sections was both spirited and precise. The trumpets, trombones and tuba, especially trumpet principal Julia Caruk, were central to the success of the Barber.

But the heart of the Barber symphony beats passionately in the haunting slow movement, and here oboe principal Anne Megan spun a beautiful ope ning obbligato to set the mood.

The quick growth of her plaintive melody into a full-­blown Romantic sweep through the entire orchestra (Barber wastes no time in this work) did justice to this masterpiece.

But, oddly enough, the audience reaction and applause was tepid.

Next came Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, Brahms' final orchestral work that is grave and at times melancholic, relying on the success of the soloists to carry it, as it alternates between often repetitive orchestral passages and very spare scoring to allow the cello to be heard in its dialog with the violin.

Saturday's soloists were familiar faces: ECSO concertmaster Stephan Tieszen and former principal cellist Alvin Wong, who took a position in Australia over the summer. The spirit of bonhomie between these two friends was more than evident as they exchanged smiles during rests, and very winning.

Many of the best moments are given to the cello in the opening movement, and Wong was both emphatic and projected a warm hall-­filling sound. Both soloists were dynamic in the paired cadenza that comes at the start, a very testing entrance, to be sure. Tieszen played with his characteristic bright sound, and the pair were son ically balanced throughout, no rare feat, as they played in dialogs, in octaves and in forceful paired stops. The concert ended with Beethoven's elegantly crafted and energetic Symphony No. 2, one of Beethoven's last Haydn-­like formally Classical compositions before entering his "heroic" middle period. Written at about the same time as Beethoven's cri de coeur of his "Heiligenstadt Testament," where he bemoaned his growing deafness, it is remarkably anguish-­free. Berlioz wrote of it: "In this symphony everyth ing is noble, energetic and proud."

Shimada carried it forward briskly, but with Classical restraint, repeatedly holding back his violins, bending to press downward with his left hand to hold down the dynamics to preserve headroom for the fortes. In the Beethoven, the fine sectional string play stood out, along with bassoon principal Tracy McGinnis, who made the most of the many key moments Beethoven p rovided her, especially in the final two movements.

The spot-­on interplay of the string sections in the opening development, Shimada's sure sense of motion and line in the second movement larghetto that abounds with melodies, and his fast-­paced reading of the thrust-­and–parry of the finale were a tasty serving of Classical era invention.

This recital at the Chinese Consulate Generalâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Los Angeles received a lot of attention from the Chinese press, including American Chinese newspapers, Chinese newspapers, and the Chinese Government websites. The concert was attended by Chinese officials, representatives from Japanese and South African Consulates, Mayor of Montreal, and businessmen in the LA area. It was also broadcasted on CCTV8, which was viewed by audiences in China, America and Canada.

此次的音乐会于晚间7时 幕，邱绍芳总领事对到场的贵宾表示热烈欢迎，他指 出，中国拥有50多个民族，每个民族都有不同特色的音乐，而本次音乐晚会也体现 了综合世界元素的多元化色彩，3位音乐家黄胤铭、Catharina Chen和Conrad Chow分 别 自香港、挪威及加拿大，为大家带 一道丰盛的音乐文化大餐。中领馆文化参 赞车兆和也表示， 宾当晚将享受到双份餐点，一份是精神上的音乐大餐，另一份 则是实际的晚餐。 音乐会的首个曲目是黄胤铭和Catharina Chen一同带 的亨德尔（HandelHalvorsen）的帕萨卡？亚舞曲（passacaglia），大提琴和小提琴协奏，顿时将音乐 会气氛推至高潮。随后，黄胤铭演奏了7首中国传统乐曲，包括青海民歌《四季 歌》、云南民歌《猜调》、河北民歌《小白菜》、古琴曲《醉渔唱晚》、台湾民歌 《丢丢铜子》、蒙古族民歌《牧歌》以及藏族的《西藏舞》。最后，Catharina Chen 和Conrad Chow表演了小提琴协奏，演奏了波兰小提琴家维尼奥夫斯基（Henrik Wieniawski Caprices）的第一和第四协奏曲。音乐会在欢乐的气氛下落幕。 【去论坛发表评论】【转寄】【列印】【

Bios Cellist Alvin Wong has appeared in concerts across five continents. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Seoul Arts Center, and Hong Kong Cultural Center; and in music festivals such as Aspen, Orford, Fontfroide, Sion, Casals, and Great Mountains. Recent highlights include appearances in the Festival de Carvalho in Brazil, tour with Indiana University New Music Ensemble to the Midwest and East Coast, and chamber music concert series in Hong Kong. He has also given concertlectures in Korea and the States.

A native of Hong Kong, Alvin started playing the piano when he was 3 but did not study the cello until he was 14. After winning some local competitions, he continued his cello studies at the Eastman School of Music while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He received his Masters from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he was also an Associate Instructor in Music Theory. He received the Artist Diploma from Yale, and is currently enrolled in their doctoral program. His major teachers are Aldo Parisot and Janos Starker.

Alvin is currently on faculty of Connecticut College and Neighborhood Music School, and is the principal cellist of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. He is passionate about bringing live classical music to a broader audience, and continues to regularly perform solo and chamber recitals in hospitals, retirement homes, and public schools. He has been a member of the New Haven Outreach Performers since 2007.

Pianist Lucas Wong is earning a diversified career as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and repetiteur. He made his solo debut at the Canadian Broadcasting Company in Vancouver after winning the Début Young Artists Competition in Canada. His keyboard repertoire includes such monumental works as the Hammerklavier Sonata, Brahms's Paganini Variations, Debussy's Douze Etudes, and Crumb's Makrokosmos. Wong is one of very few pianists around the world who has performed LisztBerlioz's Symphonie Fantastique in Canada, the US, and China. As a chamber musician and collaborator in demand, Wong was a featured artist alongside with violinist Soovin Kim and bassoonist Frank Morelli at the Banff Centre. He was invited to perform the Shanghai premiere of Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn at the Sixth International Piano Academy. He appeared in James Levine’s vocal masterclass under the auspice of the Marilyn Horne Foundation in Carnegie Hall. As a repetiteur, Wong is currently the assistant conductor (for Rufus

Wainwright's Prima Donna) at the New York City Opera. Wong attended the Music Academy of the West and worked closely with William Bolcom in the west coast premiere of A Wedding. He is on the faculty of SongFest at Pepperdine, on staff at the Yale Opera and the Opera Theater of Connecticut, and a regular accompanist at festivals and competitions such as the Norfolk Choral Music Festival and the Eckhardt-Gramatté new music competition. He will serve as the official accompanist for the 2012 Metropolitan Opera Council District Auditions in Connecticut. Wong played under the batons of George Manahan, Jayce Ogren, Warren Jones, Simon Carrington, Andrew McGill, Kyle Swann, Vance George, Jeffrey Ames, Masaaki Suzuki, Rollo Dilworth, and James Bagwell.

Wong began his early training at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. He is a graduate of both University of British Columbia (B. Mus) and Yale School of Music (M.M., M.M.A, D.M.A). Mentors include Boris Berman, Claude Frank, Peter Frankl, Michael Friedmann, Margo Garrett, Martin Katz, Warren Jones, Julian Martin, Edward Parker, Poon Tak, Rena Sharon, and Robert Silverman. Wong also holds a Post-Graduate Fellowship from Bard Conservatory, where he worked closely with Frank Corliss, Kayo Iwama, and Dawn Upshaw. Wong was nominated by William Bolcom as a finalist for the Lili Boulanger Prize. Among other top achievements are the Piano Encouragement Award at the Marilyn Horne Foundation Vocal Competition, the Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize, UBC Concerto Competition, and the Vancouver Foundation Award. He received a Gold Medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, the conservatory’s highest honor for his ARCT Teachers’ Diploma. He has given masterclasses at Xinghai Conservatory, British Columbia Conservatory of Music, and Shanghai Conservatory. He has been a guest lecturer on Debussy at the Juilliard School. He is a regular adjudicator at the Young Musicians Festival at Fairfield University.

About the Artists Amy Sze - Pianist Amy Sze receives her Bachelor's degree from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with first class honours, and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. She has received numerous scholarships, including the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Scholarship and the Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund Overseas Scholarship. Her teachers include Chui-Fun Poon, Gabriel Kwok and Nelita True. Winner of the Eastman Concerto Competition and Finalist of the MTNA Steinway Competition, Sze has performed as a soloist with many orchestras including Texas Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, Eastman Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

She is particularly active in chamber music and keen on promoting new music. She appears frequently on RTHK Radio 4 in recitals and has been featured in such festivals as Le French May and ISCM World Music Days. Amy Sze is currently on the faculty of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Baptist University of Hong Kong. 施敏倫以一級榮譽畢業於香港演藝學院音樂學士學位課程，後於美國伊士曼音樂學 院取得演奏家文憑及音樂博士學位，曾於學院擔任鋼琴系、室樂及伴奏系助教，現任教於 香港演藝學院及香港浸會大學。她師隨潘湯翠芬，郭嘉特及 Nelita True, 並曾取得多個獎 學金，包括尤德爵士紀念基金獎學金和香港賽馬會音樂及舞蹈基金海外獎學金。她是伊士 曼協奏曲比賽冠軍得主及美國國家 MTNA 史坦威鋼琴比賽最後六名入選者之一，曾以獨 奏身份與美國德州沃斯堡室樂團、伊士曼交響樂團、香港小交響樂團和香港管弦樂團等合 作。她亦活躍於室樂演奏和致力推動新音樂，曾於法國五月節及香港國際現代音樂節演出。

He received his Masters from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he was also an Associate Instructor in Music Theory. At Yale School of Music, he received an Artist Diploma, graduated with the Master of Musical Arts degree, and is now a doctoral candidate. His major teachers are Aldo Parisot and Janos Starker.

Alvin is currently on faculty of Connecticut College, and is the principal cellist of Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. He is passionate about bringing live classical music to a broader audience, and continues to regularly perform solo and chamber recitals in hospitals, retirement homes, and public schools.
