Quality Management and Coordination Lecture 4
American University in Cairo School of Sciences and Engineering Department of Architectural Engineering AENG441 – Professional Practice, Design Management and Codes 1
Topics
2
Quality Management • Careful coordination of documents and work with consultants • Checklist for developing and coordinating working drawings
3
Quality Management General Concepts • Unacceptable number of errors in building design, documentation and professional practice.
4
Quality Management General Concepts • Quality Control procedures: Checking the work before it is distributed to the user. • Quality Control identifies error late in the process, when they are costly to correct.
5
Quality Management General Concepts • Quality Assurance • Prevent errors before they are made. • Designing, documenting and constructing requires that proper resources and scrutiny are applied. • Correct errors early before they are compounded. • Limitation: Segmented not holistic!
6
7
Quality Management General Concepts • Total Quality Management TQM = QC + QA • Customer satisfaction (client, user, public, profession, …)
Quality Management Structural Integrity • Vertical Forces: Gravity - Load Soil characteristics - Bearing capacity Water in the soil - Upward pressure Differential settlement problems structural damage • Wet soil expansion • Frost - Frost line • Wind - Uplift forces on roofs - eaves overhangs and porch roofs • • • •
9
Quality Management Structural Integrity • Vertical Forces:
10
Quality Management Structural Integrity • Lateral Forces: • Horizontal forces • Below the surface of the ground: • Soil - subsurface walls - vertical slabs • Water in soil or expansive soil - subsurface drainage
11
Quality Management Structural Integrity • Lateral Forces: • Horizontal forces • Above the surface of the ground: • Wind: Location, surrounded, open, height, overturning moments. Inward and Outward pressures - resist racking and twisting forces. Windows and openings, glazing - suction on roof surfaces - Mechanical anchoring and heavy ballast. Window frames - suction forces inward and outward.
12
Quality Management Structural Integrity • Lateral Forces: • Horizontal forces • Above the surface of the ground: • Earthquakes - direction, intensity and duration. • Lightweight buildings of regular geometric shapes and stiffness tend to perform well. • No extreme variations in strength or stiffness variations create torsion that alleviated by adding shear walls • A stiff core is not located asymmetrically in a building. • No notches or reentrant corners to concentrate stresses. • No soft story created by elevating structures on pilotis at the first story.
