CAN I UPGRADE TO FIRST-CLASS RAIL ON SOME OR EVEN ALL OF MY TRAIN JOURNEYS?
You certainly can. We know that many of our customers like to upgrade some or all of their train journeys to first-class. Upgrading will give you a larger seat, more legroom and even a meal and drinks on certain routes. Our hotels are centrally located within each city we offer. Most are within a short distance of local sights and/or your railway stations.
HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I BRING?
In general, each passenger can take two items of luggage plus one personal item. There are no weight restrictions - just remember you’ll need to carry everything!
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY TRAVEL DOCUMENTS?
After we receive full payment, travel documents will be sent to you approximately 21 days prior to your departure.
CAN I ADD ON ADDITIONAL SIGHTSEEING OR ADDITIONAL HOTEL NIGHTS?
Yes, you can add additional sightseeing activities and/or hotel nights to most existing rail holiday packages we offer. When you speak with a Rail Expert, request an explanation of the upgrade options to your holiday package as you wish. Additional charges may apply.
AM I ABLE TO TRAVEL ON MY CHOICE OF DATES?
There are no set departure dates with our holidays, with the exception of private train journeys such as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Most trains will run every day, which means our holidays do too!
CAN I CHOOSE MY TRAIN TIMES?
Our packages don’t have set departure times, and if there is a train running when there are multiple trains a day, your Rail Expert will be able to talk you through the different departures. If there’s a particularly convenient time or a departure that will ensure you catch the best scenery, we’ll be sure to recommend it.
HOW LONG BEFORE THE TRAIN DEPARTS SHOULD I BE AT THE STATION?
With the exception of Eurostar, which has a 45-minute check-in time, there is no official checkin required for train journeys in Europe or North America. Of course, we always recommend arriving at the station in plenty of time.

At the top, there are some gentle walking trails where you might catch a glimpse of a wild Chamois or Marmot. When you are ready, take the train back down the mountain and enjoy dinner in one of Zermatt’s great local restaurants.
DAY 3: THE GLACIER EXPRESS
After breakfast at your hotel, make your way to the station for a journey aboard the slowest express train in the world, the Glacier Express. This train takes you over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels. The views from the panoramic windows as you pass mountain peaks, deep gorges, and idyllic mountain villages are often breathtaking. The eight hours onboard will fly by before you pull into St Moritz for a two-night stay.
DAY 4: ST MORITZ
From May – October your included Engadin card can be used for the funicular and cable-car ride to the vantage point of Piz Nair and some spectacular views across the Engadin valley. If you would prefer something a little more relaxed, take a scenic stroll around the lake and enjoy the fresh alpine air.
DAY 5: THE BERNINA EXPRESS
Climb aboard the famous Bernina Express train from St. Moritz through the Swiss Alps as it makes its way to Tirano. From Tirano, catch a local train to Milan, then a high-speed train to magical Venice. Along the way, you will experience why this journey is loved by so many travellers.
DAY 6: VENICE
Discover the rich history of Venice this morning with a skip-the-line tour of the Doges Palace and beautiful Golden Basilica. In the afternoon perhaps watch the world go by on St Mark’s Square or treat yourself to a drink in Harry’s Bar – the home of the Bellini.
DAY 7: VENICE
Spend a day at leisure in Venice today and explore at your own pace. Speak to any of our Travel Consultants should you like a trip out to the islands of Murano and Burano, or perhaps take a ride out to the Lido to relax on the beach.
DAY 8: THE VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENTEXPRESS
Take your included transfer from your hotel in Venice to the train station and board the luxurious Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for your overnight journey to London! Enjoy a delicious lunch and a welcome cocktail as the train passes through beautiful landscapes. Have your afternoon tea before being shown to your private compartment and in the evening, you will be served a wonderful four-course dinner. Retire to your cabin, now transformed into a cozy bedroom, for a good night’s rest.
DAY 9: YOUR JOURNEY ENDS IN LONDON

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN ZERMATT
Welcome to Zermatt, a charming village nestled in the Swiss Alps. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for a two-night stay. With your 4-day Swiss Pass, you have the freedom to explore this pedestrianized village, renowned for its mountaineering history. You might choose to embark on a two-hour hike to the summit of The Breithorn mountain, affectionately known as the ‘Little Matterhorn.’ As the day winds down, consider indulging in some traditional Swiss cuisine such as fondue or raclette.
DAY 2: GORNERGRAT DAY TRIP
Start your day with a hearty breakfast before boarding the Gornergrat Cog Railway. This marvel of 19th Century engineering ascends from 5,262 feet above sea level to 10,135 feet in just 33 minutes. Don’t forget to capture the spectacular Landwasser Viaduct as the train rolls over it. Upon arrival in St. Moritz, check into your hotel for a two-night stay. Spend the evening strolling around the lake or experiencing the glitz and glamour of the local casinos.
DAY 4: BERNINA EXPRESS DAY TRIP
After breakfast, embark on a journey on one of the world’s most scenic train lines, the Bernina Express. This spectacular journey takes you from the snowcapped heights of the Alps down into the lush Poschiavo Valley and the vineyards surrounding Tirano in Italy. Enjoy a traditional pizza in Tirano before returning north on the Bernina Express, capturing the awe-inspiring scenery in the afternoon light from the comfort of the panoramic carriages of the train.
DAY 5: ST MORITZ TO ZURICH

DAY 1: BASEL
Your journey begins with a Eurostar ride to Paris, where you’ll switch to a TGV that will take you directly to Basel. Upon arrival, check into your hotel, such as the Novotel Basel City. Spend the evening exploring the beautiful Old Town, a charming area filled with historical buildings and quaint streets.
DAY 2: BASEL TO LUCERNE
After breakfast, you have the option to spend more time exploring Basel or head to the station to catch a train to Lucerne. With a Swiss Pass, you have the freedom to take any train. One suggestion is to take a train to Bern, a gorgeous city that the Swiss like to keep a secret. Spend an hour or two there before catching a train to Lucerne. Once you arrive in Lucerne, check into your hotel for a five-night stay. Accommodation options include Pilatus Kulm, Flora Hotel Lucerne, Romantik Hotel Wilden Mann, Hotel Schweizerhof Lucerne, and Waldstaetterhof Hotel.
DAY 3: MOUNT PILATUS DAY TRIP
Today, embark on a trip to the top of the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. Start with a scenic hour’s steam cruise on Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad. From there, take a 30-minute ride on the Cogwheel Railway, which operates between May and November. At the top, you’ll find the historic Pilatus Kulm Hotel and restaurant. Enjoy refreshments or one of the numerous walking trails. After soaking up the wonderful views, return to Lucerne via a gondola and cable car to Kriens and a short bus ride.
DAY 4: MOUNT RIGI DAY TRIP
Today, enjoy a one-hour scenic cruise to Vitznau, then take Europe’s oldest mountain cog railway 1800m up to Rigi Kulm. The railway carriages haven’t changed much in 100 years, and once at the top, you can enjoy spectacular 360-degree views. Enjoy lunch at the top, and between May and October, you may even have the chance to take a stroll with a St Bernard dog, synonymous with the area. On your descent, take another scenic cog railway to the town of Art-Goldau then a train back to Lucerne.
DAY 5: MOUNT TITLIS DAY TRIP
After breakfast, take a 45-minute train ride to Engelberg and then climb aboard an eight-person gondola up to Stand. Once you reach Stand, you’ll board the Rotair, the world’s first revolving 360-degree cable car, for the journey over the dazzling Titlis Glacier up to Mount Titlis. At the top, you’ll find an array of tourist attractions and restaurants, an adventure park, alpine flower trails, and Europe’s highest suspension bridge known as the Cliff Walk. Following your day adventure, head back to Lucerne and perhaps enjoy some fondue in the old town.
DAY 6: LUCERNE
Enjoy a relaxing day exploring Lucerne. This compact city has much to offer, including its picturesque Chapel Bridge with its original 17thcentury paintings. A stroll along the lakeside is certainly worthwhile, and venturing as far as the Swiss Transport Museum is also worth it, as it features a fascinating array of transportation from trains to submarines and everything in between. A final dinner in the historic Wilden Mann restaurant this evening is a lovely way to celebrate a stay in this charming city.
DAY 7: END OF TOUR
