City Art opened its doors at 828 Valencia St. in 1998, and has remained a constant in the radically changing Valencia corridor. The idea for the gallery emerged when several friends who were also artists wanted to create a viable formula for a group-operated business where they could regularly show their art and also open membership to other artist with quality work but who may not have had any viable outlets in which to show their art. A formula was worked out in which artist could “rent” a wall space for a month, and receive back at at at least 70 percent of any sales. To this day, this formula has been successful, more than covering rent and other gallery overhead without any paid employees. Artists themselves sit shifts any month in which they are showing, and also cover other ongoing maintenance duties.

Join us the First Friday of every month for our Opening Reception 7—10p.m.*

Henry Bortman

My calm, minimalist work explores the subtle shapes and shadings of the natural world. I prefer to photograph in solitude, in subdued light, immersed in the sights, sounds, and scents of nature. My photographs distill these sensations and observations. The expressive simplicity of artists like Hiroshi Sugimoto, Claude Monet, Mark Rothko and James Turrell has been an important influence on my work. I live and work in San Francisco. I have exhibited both in solo and group shows at City College of San Francisco’s Gallery Obscura, in a group show at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco and in a group show at the Midwest Center for Photography in Wichita, Kansas. In 2019 I was accepted as a member of San Francisco’s City Art cooperative gallery.

Timothy Flanagan

In all of my creative endeavors, from cradle to cane, there have been two notable aspects that describe my work. Those interconnected features are story and presence. As a young puppeteer my world was all about creating interacting characters and performing their stories in front of others. As an adult actor I threw myself into the study of human behavior within complex narratives on stage and off. As an elder visual artist I explore story through portraiture, urban landscape, nature and sometimes animal studies. The story in each piece is always the same: the internal presence of a life force struggling to make sense of the form it is taking. Within all of my work is a conscious presence looking out, as curious about the outside observer as the observer is about the artistic form they are looking at. There are a lot of eyes in my work, whether you can see them or not. Vision and form, story and presence; that is the focus of my ever-changing work.

Why?

Artists belong to City Art because it’s a cooperative gallery, owned and operated by local artists. They like the idea of making their artwork accessible and affordable to hundreds of potential art buyers each week. In addition to selling their art, they understand the importance of belonging to a network of peers who promote and support their creativity. City Art includes artists who have never before show their work in a gallery setting and members with established art careers. We do not insist on exclusive contracts with our artists, and we show a wide range of artistic mediums and styles.

Clientele & Networking

Belonging to City Art gives you exposure to thousands of new potential customers looking to purchase your art. Our Valencia Street location provides abundant foot traffic five days a week. In addition, membership at City Art provides you access to hundreds of art buyers on City Art’s mailing list. The gallery holds monthly exhibit openings that attract hundreds of potential art buyers to the gallery the first Friday of each month. City Art also creates opportunities for you to participate—individually and collectively—in the citywide Open Studios event that puts hundreds of art lovers in front of your work every October.

City Art offers you the public relations and marketing expertise you’ve been looking for. The gallery has developed media contacts throughout San Francisco and produces monthly press releases that are published in daily and weekly newspapers and magazines. Professional quality postcards are created by City Art and distributed, free of charge, to member artists for each month’s exhibit. These postcards save artists the hundreds of dollars creating and printing their own promotional materials would cost. City Art also promotes its shows in art guides and other art-related periodicals, getting your name and art before the public, the media, and most importantly—art buyers.

Membership at City Art also offers you on-line promotional opportunities, including a website that acts as a digital portal between the art-buying public and individual member artists. Our promotional emails broadcast exhibition updates to hundreds of potential art buyers online.
