The Middle Years - Yangon Model United Nations (MY-YMUN) conference took place on the morning of May 22nd, 2021, and was held to great success. This year’s This MY-YMUN conference was remarkably unique; year’s contrary to previous years, this year’s conference MYwas hosted virtually through Zoom, due to the YMUN newfound reality. In spite of the conference technical circumstances associated with the consisted of functions of a virtual conference, this year’s participants from MY-YMUN conference was held to a different schools high standard of performance and across Yangon, such productivity. as YIS, ISY, MIS, Dulwich, and YA. A total of 28 students from YIS, including three secretary generals, four chairs, and 21 delegates, were able to participate in this conference. The theme of the conference for this year was “On The Brink of Collapse” and based on this theme, compelling topics ranging from vaccine hesitancy to the Iran nuclear crisis was being discussed in four committees, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Human Rights Council (HRC), and the Disarmament and

International Security Committee (DISEC).

Several weeks prior to the conference, weekly Zoom meetings were held by the MUN advisors of YIS, where all the YIS delegates honed their speaking skills in mock debates and strengthened their preparation for the conference. The delegates also strived to familiarize themselves with the conventional procedure of MUN conferences, learning how to write country profiles, resolution papers, and opening speeches for the conference. Making effective use of this constructive preparation on the day of the conference, the delegates participated and performed with a high level of confidence, enthusiasm, and passion, as the fruitful debates commenced.

As the conference came to an end, the delegates were filled with accomplishment, yet inspiration to persistently discuss prominent global issues. In the closing ceremony, all the chairs were delighted to announce the eight Best Delegate and Honorable Mention awards among all the delegates, six of which were awarded to YIS students! Though this year’s MY-YMUN conference may not have been the most idealistic one, it went out with a bang (*pun intended*) and all the participants undoubtedly made the best out of it!
