Vasectomy

What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a safe, effective, and permanent method of male contraception, ideal for those who have completed their families or are sure they do not want future pregnancies. The procedure involves surgically interrupting the vas deferens - the tubes that transport sperm - thus preventing sperm from being part of the ejaculate.

Why choose vasectomy?

• Permanent Contraception:

Vasectomy offers a long-term solution for family planning.

• High Success Rate:

Vasectomy is one of the most reliable contraceptive methods available.

• Minimally Invasive: Advanced techniques minimize tissue trauma, reduce pain, and facilitate rapid recovery.

• Cost Effective: Compared to long-term contraceptive methods, vasectomy is a one-time procedure with lasting benefits.

Some details you need to know before vasectomy:

• High Efficacy: The procedure effectively prevents the passage of sperm.

• Failure Rate: The risk of failure is usually due to recanalization (the reconnection of the severed vas deferens), which is rare.

• Post-Operative Semen Analysis: It is critical to confirm sterility through semen analysis, typically conducted 12-16 weeks post-procedure.

• Vasectomy Reversal:

Although a vasectomy is intended to be permanent, reversal procedures are available. However, reversals are complex and success rates vary depending on the time elapsed since the vasectomy, patient age, and other factors. These reversals are not guaranteed to restore fertility completely.

Vasectomy Journey:

Overview of the process from preoperation to recovery

Step 1: Consultation with Your Urologist

• Speak with your doctor about your health, family planning goals, and contraceptive options

• Complete physical examination

• Ensure vasectomy is the right choice for you

Step 2: Nurse Counselling & Education

To make you feel fully informed, supported, and confident before your surgery.

• How the procedure is done

• What to expect during recovery

• Detailed wound care instructions

• Semen testing timeline after surgery

Step 3: Pre-op Preparation

Financial counselling, anaesthetic counselling 2 weeks before the surgery

• SMS reminder 1 week before the surgery

• A phone call from operation theatre 1 day before the surgery

Step 4: Vasectomy Procedure (Day Surgery)

• Takes about 30-45 minutes

• General anaesthetic

• Same-day discharge with care instructions

Step 5: Post-op Teleconsultation

3-4 Weeks After Surgery

• Check on wound healing, review any swelling, bruising, or discomfort

• In person consultation if required

• Trace the histology result

12-16 Weeks After Surgery

• Semen Analysis Teleconsultation

• Arrange semen analysis in KKH (at least 20 times ejaculation prior)

• Abstinence 3 days prior to semen analysis

• Doctor reviews your results virtually

• You’ll be cleared for unprotected intercourse only when no sperm is detected

• If sperm is detected, we’ll guide you on next steps

Step 6: You’re Cleared

• Very rare risks of reconnection (recanalization)

• Ongoing support for sexual health and well-being

Dos & Don’ts on Vasectomy Day Dos

• Arrange transportation: Have a family member or friend drive you home; you may feel groggy from general anaesthesia.

• Wear supportive underwear: A snug athletic supporter or briefs will minimize scrotal movement and discomfort immediately post-procedure.

• Follow pre-op instructions: Fasting (no food or drink) 8 hours prior to the surgery.

• Ask questions: Clarify any last-minute concerns with the surgeon and nursing team before you’re taken into the operation room.

Don’ts

• Don’t drive yourself: You must not operate a vehicle after receiving general anaesthesia.

• Don’t consume alcohol or recreational drugs: They can interfere with anaesthesia and impede healing.

• Don’t ignore pain: Report severe pain or unusual swelling immediately via the nurse consultation line: +65-96745239 (nursing teleconsult charges apply).

Dos & Don’ts After Vasectomy Day Dos

• Rest & elevate: Limit activity for 24 hours; elevate scrotum with supportive underwear or a folded towel.

• Keep the area dry: Shower after 24 hours but avoid soaking in baths, hot tubs, or swimming pools for at least one week.

• Take prescribed analgesics: Use pain relief (e.g., paracetamol) as recommended; do not exceed the advised dose.

• Wear support: Continue snug underwear for 1-2 weeks to stabilize and protect the area.

• Monitor for complications: Look for signs of infection (redness, warmth, fever) or hematoma; call +65-96745239 if concerned.

• Attend semen analysis review: Submit samples at 12- 16 weeks and discuss results via teleconsultation to confirm sterility.

Don’ts

• Don’t resume strenuous activity: Avoid heavy lifting, gym workouts, or vigorous sports for at least 7 days.

• Don’t have sexual activity without protection method: Abstain from intercourse without contraceptive measures until your clinician confirms no sperm in your semen.

• Don’t skip follow-up: Missing your semen analysis or teleconsult appointment can leave your fertility status unknown
