Shoulder Surgery Rehabilitation What can I expect after surgery?

It is common to experience pain & swelling at your shoulder.

You will be prescribed a brace/sling for support. aA period of rehabilitation is important to help you regain your movement and strength. Your physiotherapist will guide you through post surgery precautions, pain management and prescribe appropriate exercises.

Pain and Swelling Management REST

No lifting, pushing, pulling or weight bearing on the operated arm

ICE

Ice after exercise, for 15-20 minutes, 3 times/day

BRACE

Wear your shoulder brace/sling throughout the day and night.

Remove for shower or exercise only.

Shoulder Brace Management

Precautions  Do not lift, push, pull or weight bear with your operated arm.  Do not use your shoulder muscles to move your operated shoulder.  Do not lift your operated arm above shoulder level.  Do not turn your operated shoulder outward.  Do not turn your operated shoulder inward (e.g. arm behind back).

Tips to Manage at Home 

Avoid use of your operated arm when showering/changing.

Rest it at your side.



To wash under the operated arm, lean your trunk forward and allow the arm to hang down.



Wear a button shirt or singlet with wide arm holes. Slide the armhole up your operated arm first then slide your head/unaffected arm into the shirt.

Consult your doctor if you notice 

Smelly discharge or pus from your wound.



Increase in swelling or redness.



Dressing soaked through with blood.



Prolonged numbness, tingling or change of sensation in your arm.
