My uncle met with an accident and was seriously injured. He was warded in the ICU for comprehensive care. He had tubes and drains put onto him.

We were very worried and concerned by his condition.

We wanted to be with him at all times to do whatever we could to help him.

What is the Intensive Care Unit?

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a specialised section of the hospital that provides comprehensive and continuous care for persons who are critically ill and who can benefit from treatment.

Our Intensive Care team consists of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, dietitians and physiotherapists.

Our nurses will orientate patients and their families to be familiar with the ICU environment.

Visiting your loved one • To ensure that your loved has adequate rest, only two visitors are allowed at any one time.

• If you are feeling unwell (cold, flu), please stay at home and only visit your loved one after you have recovered.

• For your children’s (under 12 years old) safety, do not bring them into the ICU. • The use of cell phones is not permitted in the patient’s room as it may interfere with the electrical equipment.

• We appreciate your cooperation in creating a restful environment for your loved ones.

Points to note: • Nominate a single contact person to be updated by the ICU team about your loved one’s condition. This spokesperson will disseminate information to the rest of the family members. When the need arises, the ICU team will liaise with this spokesperson to arrange for a family conference update.

DO NOT pass germs to your loved one. Wash your hands before and after entering the ICU.

Ensure that you have adequate rest. It is important for you to get enough food and rest while you are concerned about your loved one.
