Location Benghazi, Libya Designer Yingzhe Duan Design period 9/2017-3/2018 Type Individual Final project Client Dr. El-Naihum

This hospital is my final master’s project. There is no pediatric neuroscience hospital in Libya, which is my client’s hometown. So this project aims to help the client to achieve his dream to built the first neuroscience institute in Libya in the future. To considered the balance of modern and traditional architecture, the building is innovated from the traditional form. The concept of the design combines the neuroscience and architecture to create a healing environment that could enhance the recovery of the pediatric patients.

INTRODACTION Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system. Nervous system includes brain, spinal cord, sensory nerve cells, advancing the understanding of human thought, emotion, and behaviors. After a neurological disease like stroke, people often experience emotional and behavioral changes. This is because stroke affects the brain, and our brain controls our behavior and emotions. Injury from a stroke may make a person forgetful, careless, irritable or confused. Stroke survivors may also feel anxiety, anger or depression. “The more positive stimuli a baby is given, the more brain cells and synapses it will be able to develop.

PROANALYSIS

Separate the different departments. In the central axis to the northwest, there are lobby, garden with fountains and pavilion and worship hall for all religions. There are four main axis corridors to connected every department. The windmill type is easier for the hospital to expand in the future. The central garden with other accessible small courtyards provides a healing environment to the hospital.

COURTYARD

Arcade Plant Fountain

Inpatient waiting room Traditional Lybian courtyard

The courtyard idea is inspired directly by traditional local architecture. Each courtyardd has moving water within it and the concept is that there should mot be a variety of landscape experiences but also that there should be a different sound of water in each court. The courtyard as a healing space to cure patient in different aspects. The open view to the plant and fountain will distract patients attention from the painful disease. The positive stimulation through the sight, smell, hear, and touch to lower patients’ heart rates, blood pressure and stress levels.

SKYLIGHTS

Glass Concrete Glass Concrete Skylight of waiting room

The good climate conditions and the building orientation maximize natural light and the visual relationship with the landscape, letting patients to perceive its changes, the time and seasons passing by, and reducing one’s sense of isolation. Quality of light and lighting play a fundamental role for the environmental and psychological well-being. The swimming pool has a concrete dome roof with some skylights on it. As time goes on during the day, the light spot will changed the place, which will attract patients attention and surprise them. Therefore the daylight theapy with the water therapy both cure the patient effectively.

Skylight of nurse station

CENTRAL GARDEN

The central garden innovated on the traditional Islamic style basis. In the traditional Islamic garden, there are two axes to divide the square plaza, the fountain is located at the junction of the axes. When you enter into the lobby of the hospital, you will see a green garden with some fountains in it. A concrete cylinder worship hall at the end of the garden. There is a wooden pavilion in the corner the garden to provide a shaded place for people to relax and fully enjoy the garden. The shadow of the wood pavilion is the traditional Islamic geometry pattern. The central column of the pavilion looks like the palm tree. In the traditional Islamic garden, the people seldom to get into the garden except for the special festival, because the garden is sacred. However, in this hospital, the garden acts as a healing space, so it is important to make it accessible to patients. It is the good interactive space for healing the pediatric patient.

SECTION

ENERGY SYSTEM It is the good way to use the low tech method to reduce the outcomes of the economy, but also to create a more comfortable place for the patient and staff. The building is arranged around a series of small and intimate courtyards with the possibility of empowering the patients and staff to swith off the courtyards and induce a breeze through the rooms through a thermal chimney. The glass chimney also admits light which is reflected upwards onto the polished underside of the masonary vaulted roof structure. The form of the wood truss structure is derived from the traditional triangle hole on the top of the wall.

Daylighting: Reflactive sunlignt to reduce the use of the electricity. Solar panel: Install them on the south of the truss structure.

Air flow: The hot air will comes out from the louvers on the top.

SLOPE Micro-hospital

Location College Station, Tx Designer Yingzhe Duan Design period 2/2017-5/2017 Type Individual Client Scott Endsley M.D.

MICRO-HOSPITAL is similar to community hospital and small rural hospital, but microhospital provide better access to acute or emergency care. That means we need to design a more effective way to convince patients. In order to achieve this goal, I try to make the parking lot around the building, each entrance of the hospital is closed to the parking. However, in traditional phenomenon, with lots of cars near the building, the landscape will far away from the building. From the top of the view you can only see lots of shiny cars. I believe that the nature has a power to cure the patient, it is the best medicine for patients. So I covered the parking lot with green roof, the buildings are also underneath of the landscape. Therefore, the patient will see nature from he or she come into the hospital until they back home. Additionally, there is a horizontal shading located on the south-west of building block the strong sunlight. It also provides a barrier between the indoor and outdoor to insure the patient privacy.

DESIGN CONCEPT Imagine a community where comprehensive health and health care are within walking distance. Where health care services are tailored to the needs of individuals and communities, and flexes to provide a full range of services from ambulatory to in-home to hospital-centered care. Care that is connected through technology and fully integrated with a health system capable providing the most sophisticated and complex diagnostic and therapeutic services. Nourishment

The nature has a power that can bring people happy and relax. It is the best medicine that will shorten the cure time. In order to fill the site with green, there is not only ground landscape, but also a green roof. The green roof covers the parking and building.

The whole building is almost hidden by the green hills. Vegetation helps cool the membrane and the building during the summer as the plants and growing substrate act as an insulation layer, they shade the roof, and through evapotranspiration.

SITE GENERATION

The original site with plenty of trees.

Lift up the ground and cover the parking with landscape.

The lifestyle center is on the green roof, it provides some outdoor activities for the visitors. The landscape also shares the facility with the nearby community without the cars interrupt.

Two drive pathways to access to the parking lot.

The main hospital building is located between the two drive pathways.

The green roof connected to the hospital and health center.

Before I went to the company, the bench leg had been designed by my colleague Alen for a month, and finally decided to come down in a general way. After I went there, the bench wood just was sent, and the design need to be adjusted according to the actual wood. The concept is the use of a combination of black steel and wood, soft and hard materials, which is the fusion of traditional and modern. The continuous unequal three prisms also brings a simple geometry of the concise sense.

GEOMETRY SACRED ARCHITECTURE

Location Tanaf, Senegal, Africa Designer Yingzhe Duan | Panwang Huo | Xiao Wang Design period 04/2017 Type Team

In this project, we introduced a profound yet simple holy architecture that will become the symbol of Tanaf and Senega. We created a powerful and poetic architecture through enhancing the dialogue between space, form, and light. Kerf Looro’s place of worship will accommodate and celebrate Tanaf’s religious communities, including Muslims, Christians, Orthodox and Animism. We materialized the three elements of sacred architecture: Introspection, Spirituality, and Divinity in three rooms of light. The fourth room is dedicated to the vertical dimension to GOD through a stairway to heaven.
