CHIEF MINISTER'S OFFICIAL SPEECH AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES On the occasion of the opening & the celebrating of the Commonwealth Games, the Yidindji Nation and I, as Chief Minister, would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all. Peace & friendship are at the very heart of the Yidindji way, thanks be God who we call 'Gayaburra Goopi'. While a majority of nations will compete on the Gold Coast in the Games, many have come from around the world to witness this global festival of sport and will do so here in the city of Gimuy. I hope that you will enjoy your time in our city, and I am sure that you will find a warm reception awaiting you all. The Commonwealth of nations has around 53 countries as members. You may be surprised to hear that the Yidindji Nation is not one of those countries. It is true that team work makes the dream work, we believe that a successful conclusion of our offer of a treaty to Australia will lead to great possibilities, who knows one day in the future our city may host its very own Commonwealth Games. The Yidindji Nation is willing to underwrite Australia and help settle the past and secure the future. And a successful treaty will result in the Cairns region preparing for the future with developing world class stadia, sports science facilities, roads and infrastructure. The way forward is very clear. But like the Commonwealth Games, this must be met with a tradition of fair play & good faith. Now congratulations are in order for the athletes, the volunteers, and supporters who will be following the action but I would like to make a special acknowledgement that solid administration is the key, without it there would be no games.
