Preserving the Future

Celebrating their 75th year, The Artists Association of Nantucket has worked for decades to foster local artists and has just completed a major acquisition project of Nantucket Art Colony works. More than 100 priceless artworks were donated to AAN in celebration of this landmark anniversary.

“This project began a few years ago in anticipation of our anniversary this summer,” said curator and AAN Artistic Director Robert Frazier. “I was completely overwhelmed by the generosity of serious collectors, patrons, and the artist’s families. They understood the urgency for keeping these artworks protected.”

The newly acquired collection features seven paintings by Frank Swift Chase, the dean of Nantucket artists, who summered on-island from 1920 into the early 1950s. Two of these works are the iconic Union Street and Alongside The Wharf.

The entire acquisition project is lavishly illustrated in a just-released art history book written by Frazier, Born From A Hurricane, 75 Years of the Artists Association of Nantucket, and is available to purchase at both exhibition locations.

Preserving the Future will run through Columbus Day weekend at the Visual Arts Center, 9 am to 5 pm weekdays and at 41 Straight Wharf through Labor Day weekend, Wednesday thru Monday, 12-5 pm.

In addition to preserving these works for posterity, AAN is also hosting their annual Artist/Patron Exhibition starting this Friday, August 14. The exhibition will be on display through Saturday August 29 in the Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street.

“The first juried AAN Artist/Patron exhibition was held in 1949, so this summer marks the 71st year we’ve featured this long-standing tradition,” said Frazier. “…our artists bring in their strongest works for this special exhibition, which we consider one of the high points of our gallery season, where we showcase the best new works by the island’s premier artists.”

“This year, due to the world-wide pandemic, we are adhering to best safety practices and have only opened the first floor of the gallery. Visitors must wear a face covering and we’re allowing only four people in at one time,” said gallery manager Peter J. Greenhalgh. AAN is also hosting an online exhibition of the same name at nantucketarts.org starting Friday, August 21 to September 11.

The late David Hostetler once called Rich “part of my Nantucket history.”

Hostetler, celebrated wood carver, bronze sculptor for over 61 years and owner of the downtown gallery with his wife Susan Hostetler, who carries on her husband’s mission to share his art and other artists with Nantucket. “When I first arrived in Nantucket in the early 90’s, David was among the first artists I met who really inspired me to dedicate fully to becoming an artist,” Rich recalls. “Both he and Susan encouraged me in my work and career. He helped me get into graduate school and later collected my paintings. In the summer, we would catch up and share stories of balancing life as an artist and the trials of academia.”

Established in 1992, the original gallery exclusively displayed the artwork of world-renown David Hostetler. The gallery moved to their Centre Street location in 2012, and the increased space allowed for the showcasing of many additional artists.

Hostetler’s works appear in more than 25 museums and galleries, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. His pieces are prized in numerous public collections from Nantucket to The Netherlands.

Born in 1962 in Charlottesville, Virginia, Rich is a Master of Fine Arts and Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. He is currently a Professor of Art at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Summertime Drift

The sky announces the end of summer.

During my solitary walk to the trash can late at night, I saw a long streak cross the southern sky before it disappeared behind a low rolling cloud. The Perseid meteor shower lights up the middle of August and calls out “last call.”

Summer hangs on, in spite of the stars. On the south shore, the north Atlantic is bathwater warm, but awash in seaweed and jellyfish. The fairways and backyards have burned up, while the hydrangea are browning and the beach plums are reddening. The corn is ripe, the tomatoes are heavy, and summertime stretches into the wet, warm night.

I once taught with an old Vermont farmer named Ken Wheeling. In June, on the last day of school, he took his watch off and dumped it into the top drawer of his desk. “Ask me what time it is?” He demanded.

“Summertime” he answered the silence.

And so it is. In this plague year, we are in timeless “summertime.” The hours have fled across the sky and the clocks have hid their faces in a cloud of fog. Even the town clock has stopped chiming.

This year, the milestones that measure out the course of summer have disappeared. Figawi, the 4th of July Fireworks, the Carnival, the Pops, Race Week and the collapse of the Red Sox bullpen have all left the future, skipped out on the present, and faded into history and photography.

Instead, we know that the bonito are back and feeding in the rips. We know that the sun is setting earlier, the fog is burning off quicker, and storms have sent waves ahead. We know that the kids have left New York and placed their careers into the back bedroom. We know that they brought their significant others so that we could learn more about them than we needed to. And they could learn the same things about us.

We don’t know when the kids are going back to school. We don’t know when our college students have to head back to dorms and drinks. We don’t know when the office in Brooklyn will want the creatives back at their desks. We don’t know when we will have to be shut back inside with Netflix and toilet paper. We have been washed off the beach of clocks and calendars, then swept out into an ocean of time.

And we are drifting.

I drift in the middle of the night, in the humidity and noise of the fan until I get up, drift downstairs (and open the fridge) then drift outside. I have murdered sleep and have replaced it with sharks. They have bills, of course. In the middle of the night, I worry if I can stay afloat on top of the bills, invoices, and automatic deductions. The life events float beyond reach. Retirement, college graduations, careers, weddings, grandchildren: all line up like buoys. But instead of motoring up the channel, I am drifting. The tide may take me away from them all.

My life has been kept afloat up by white male privilege. I was given opportunities and second chances that others never got. I stood in the chapel of a revered school in Vermont and heard, listed for me, the advantages I was to receive while I attended and, later, when I graduated. Where Style Runs in the Family

Part of the large gray building that dominates the top of Main Street where it meets Fair was once the shop of Nantucketer Rowland Hussey Macy... yes, that Macy, the man who started New York’s first modern department store.

Today the building houses a shop that is as much a tradition on Nantucket as Macy’s is in New York City—Murray’s Toggery Shop, which for the past 75 years has outfitted men, women, and children who live on and visit our island.

In 1945, Philip Murray purchased the store, and by the 1950s his son, Philip C., was helping him run it and expand it right to the corner of Main and Fair. How to Help Two Milkweed-Loving Insects

Director of Research & Education at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation A few weeks ago, I wrote about the diversity of milkweed plants that grow on Nantucket. By now, the blossoms have faded, the seed pods are maturing, and the lush leaves continue to photosynthesize in the hot August sun.

Turn over some of those leaves and you may find tiny white eggs or even a small caterpillar or two. It’s time for the monarchs and other milkweed-loving caterpillars to gorge themselves silly on the buffet of milkweed leaves across the island.

Monarch butterflies, and their early stages as caterpillars, are one of the most charismatic pollinators inspiring many a kindergarten classroom and backyard gardener. The monarch butterfly is one of the most recognizable species in North America and, as such, is used as the poster child for protecting our wild spaces. Think of it as an ambassador to a mosaic of grassland plants and animals that all need soil, sun, and time to grow.

Since the number of monarchs has been decreasing, the butterflies have been used to demonstrate why broadcast pesticides are harmful, as are habitat loss, habitat

fragmentation, and non-native species. Efforts to support monarch populations also help countless other less-charismatic species of insects and plants.

One way to help monarchs? Please don’t take them off of plants. Many butterfly enthusiasts love to collect and raise monarchs in an effort to help their declining populations. While well-intentioned, these captures could actually do more harm than good.

New research from the University of Chicago demonstrated that monarchs raised in captivity may have a more difficult time migrating come fall. Even the monarchs sourced from wild populations have a hard time orienting south – the direction they need to go.

Previous research from the same group (published in 2019) showed that commercially-raised monarchs – the kind people order form the internet – were worse at orienting south than their wild counterparts. These commercially available monarchs were genetically distinct. This new research now shows that any captivity

emphatically, with a call to action: “To Whom Much is Given, Much is Expected.”

The patriarchy and the privilege in that statement does not diminish its power.

“What do you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

While my ship was chugging along, paycheck to payment, the answer to that question was scrawled on pizza boxes and gas station receipts. But now, adrift on an August night, those answers do not qualify: what can be expected now?

Who are you when the clocks stop, when the velocity drops, and the stars stop blinking? We are now sidereal and solar, under the grinding motion of the stars.

If our clocks and calendars no longer measure out our days, what will? When we have nobody to measure us by our games, our classrooms, or our hours in the mill, how do we measure that “expectation”? Do we measure out our lives in coffee spoons and lost golf balls? In “Likes,” “Shares,” and Candy Crushed?

So much of the sleep-robbing anxiety of today comes from what we can’t control. We can’t control who gets votes, who gets arrested, and who gets sick. What we can control, our habits and our routines, seems small. I walked today. I wrote today. I called someone. But, those are the drips of water that will wear down the mountain. Everything I do, gives me control, gives me agency, and gives me hope. Everything that scrolls by does not.

My one wild and precious life sits on an Adirondack chair in the back yard and judges me. She doesn’t have anything else to do right now. The Chicken Box has closed for the night, the beach parties have been broken up, and she has run out of golf balls. Alone, out in the serious moonlight, she eyes me. Much remains expected.

Normal has slipped over the horizon. The new normal—masked and gloved— rises with Orion out of the sea. We don’t know the changes and challenges that will restart the clocks. But before that happens, we should make a plan for that one wild and precious life. Will we measure it in people and places, or in miles run, pages read, and letters sent? That life we can control. The one that is grinding over the horizon will be beyond our hands. There is work to do up close.

This January, John and Trish retired and handed the reins to their four children: Lauren and Gregory Murray and Matthieu and Andrew Bridier. This new generation has, in just the first six months of a most challenging year, made significant updates to Murray’s Toggery Shop while keeping the store’s timeless style and Nantucket spirit intact.

John and Trish are both still involved on a consulting and part-time basis: always available to their children while enjoying gardening and hoping to travel when circumstances permit. “I miss my personal interactions with my staff and all the wonderful customers I’ve met over the years, many of whom are friends today,” said John, “I’d like to thank them all for supporting us over the years, and I hope to run into many of them in the near future.” Trish added “we’re delighted that our children want to continue the family tradition, including our Nantucket RedsTM —and they have great new ideas! It’s been a very smooth transition.”

Just as their parents did before them, Lauren, Gregory, Matt, and Andrew all grew up in the business. “I remember coming here as a young kid, hanging out and helping. Every summer I’d come here when school let out,” Lauren reminisced. “I started in ladies shoes, then moved into the men’s department... that’s where I met my fiancé [Nantucketer Connor Soverino,

now the store’s general manager], when I was working at Murray’s after college.”

“I started working in the shop when I was 12 or 13... it was my summer job every year through college,” added Matt. “I’ve always loved the business—I have a real affinity for it. You have to love people to love retail. And I love finding the next interesting thing and placing it in the store... it’s like a puzzle to solve every season... we need to give you a good reason to change what’s in your closet and to wear it.”

Matt describes the styles sold in Murray’s Toggery Shop as having a “traditional Nantucket look with a twist—it’s a modern take on a traditional wardrobe, ‘tried and true’ as well as avant-garde.” Lauren adds “we offer classic, accessible fashion: coastal, preppy, with some higher end... We can go head-to-toe and outfit an entire family with clothing, shoes, and accessories.”

Murray’s new team is continuing the traditions of their parents and generations before, and that includes staying up-to-date with current trends. During a pandemic, that has included masks—they keep selling out of their Nantucket RedTM masks,“who would have predicted that?” said Lauren. And they are also offering more casual work-at-home attire “clothing that will help you present a professional image on Zoom but still be comfortable,” Matt explained, “We’re lucky: with Murray’s we can take fashion chances and show people things outside their comfort zone. Nothing is out-of-bounds on what could work in the store... our clientele is always changing, new people are always coming to Nantucket” and Murray’s Toggery Shop is changing with the times. “We have a continued on page 18

common vision and all want to move the store forward,” Lauren added.

Lauren, Gregory, Matt, and Andrew, along with assistance from John and Trish, have made major changes to the Ladies Department of Murray’s Toggery Shop for 2020. The physical renovations they planned to finish in April were delayed due to the pandemic, but this June, they opened with a stunning new space.

“We wanted the Ladies area to be more open, more modern, to better display the great products: classic and new,” said Lauren. The store still has an area devoted to their iconic Nantucket RedTM collection, but where that had been is now a Ladies Shoe Salon. The second floor now houses a special sale section, and Murray’s annual August Sale is happening now, offering sensational bargains.

The Murray family had a pleasant surprise during the physical renovations: “As the work was done, we discovered these wonderful beams with wooden pegs that were under the ceiling. They were beautiful, so we decided to keep them,” Lauren explained. One of their long-time employees (of which there are many!) in the Ladies Department commented: “I love all the light in the new space, and the beams were a definite bonus..Mr. Macy could have gazed upon these beams.”

In addition to physical renovation and reorganization, the new generation is bringing in new lines with “fun patterns and prints and lots of texture,” including Sail to Sable, Persifor, and J.Marie. For men, Holebrook sweaters have been popular this season, and Peter Millar fashions have long been a classic at Murray’s.

When asked what was next on the to-do list for this new generation of Murrays, they mentioned that they’ll keep developing their Nantucket RedsTM collection and continue to expand the items and fashions in the store. To keep the feel of one cohesive shop, they are “planning a future renovation of the Men’s side of the store, “I can’t wait to see what’s under the ceiling on that side,” Lauren commented. They are also in the final stages of a website overhaul so that they can stay connected with their customers when they aren’t on-island. “And we’re getting ready for the second half of 2020, whatever that might bring!” said Matt.

There is nothing quite like your hometown pub. You know the place: satisfying food and drink, smiling faces, and good times abound. They serve up some of the best things in life, something we could all use during these trying times.

On Nantucket, there is one place that comes to mind where diners can fill their bellies and feed their souls, catch up with friends old and new, and feel right at home on their first visit. For all this and more, look no further than the Rose & Crown.

Erected in the 1800s, The Rose and Crown was originally a livery stable for keeping horses and carriages. After that it was home to a gas station and later an art gallery. Then, in the mid-70s, it was transformed into the restaurant we know and love today. Their 40+ years of steadfast service is an island tradition we are pleased to enjoy.

Their current menu boasts some new items along with all the classics that keep patrons coming back for more. The list of libations is long and diverse, offering everything from custom cocktails, unique wines, a daunting list of drafts, and an inventive collection of mocktails. If you just can’t decide on a beer, ask for a flight to taste a few of the eclectic options. As of our press date, they’re also Fried Goat Cheese offering beer and wine to go for those who order takeout food, which was our first choice on this sunny summer evening.

On Nantucket, there are lots of places ideal for enjoying your dinner outdoors, and the Atheneum Park is diagonally across from the restaurant. We hopped across the street, laid out our blanket, and took directly to digging in.

The Bites section of The Rose & Crown menu offers just that: dishes sized nicely to get your appetite going, to share or not to share.

Four crispy rounds Braised Short Rib Tacos

of Fried Goat Cheese are served alongside tangy pickled onions and a complex cranberry chutney over a bed of peppery arugula. We loved the contrast of crunch and creamy, and the jammy sweet sauce was a cool compliment to the earthy tang of the warm cheese.

Delightful Loaded Deviled Eggs combine scallions, mustard, and onions in a seriously savory snack perfect for a picnic, and the bacon bits on top Lamb Sliders add top-notch texture and taste. Airy and delicate naan makes the Braised Short Rib Tacos truly something special. Crisp, spicy slaw and tender, meaty beef filled them out, and we would have happily devoured more than the three tacos that come with each Bites order.

The Lamb Sliders are loaded with flavor. The succulent patties are grilled to perfection and topped with provolone and bacon—the tangy tzatziki under the bun brightens up every bite.

Our favorite first by far and the one to try this summer is The Crown’s Shrimp & Cheesy Grits (cover photo). We loved the slow sizzle of the Cajun-style shimp, all six of them tender, toothsome, and cooked to perfection. A spoonful of cheddar-laced grits served underneath ties it together and brings it all home.

An option that beats the heat is the Crunchy Asian Salad. A melange of thinly sliced vegetables including Crunchy Asian Salad cabbage, celery, bell pepper, and cucumber marinate before your eyes in an intensely flavorful sesame soy dressing. Flavors of ginger and cilantro settle in with a light spice from crushed red pepper. This generously sized salad could easily make a meal.

Another, healthier choice is the Warm Grains and Veggie Chopped Salad.

We love the contrast of toasty ancient grains, buttery sweet potato, and seasonal squash against cooling red pepper, onion, and tomatoes. A bright lemon vinai-

grette brings out the best in each component, and it’s just as filling as it is delicious.

One dish that walks the line between app and entree is the Thai Green Curry Mussels. Handfuls of healthy black bivalves are bathed in a house coconut curry that is too good to leave behind.

Add the garlic bread to help soak up every drop.

We were spoiled the evening we got our takeout from The Crown: with so Thai Green Curry Mussels many delicious entrees it was almost impossible to pick a favorite. Every item was prepared with care and each dish stood alone with the accompaniments tailor-made to suit. Staff at the Crown packed it well for travel and included everything we needed, including condiments.

Burgers are a force to be reckoned with at The Rose & Crown. You can build your own with all of your favorite fixings or keep with the classics. Our favorite is The Hangover Burger: you’ll need two hands to wrap around the buttery bun, swiss, cheddar, and American cheeses melted and mingling atop a half-pound of fresh black Angus beef, fresh fried onion rings, bacon, sweet sautéed onions, and crisp fresh lettuce. All are cooked to order and made to please.

Enjoy a savory sampling of summer in the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich.

Roasted pepper, eggplant, mushrooms, and summer squash are all tied together with house-made hummus and an herb aioli. Served on a Romano Ciabatta roll, it’ll fill you up without weighing you down. Fries on the side that came with everything on the Hand-Held section of the menu were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, with just enough seasoning to keep you eating just one more.

Another sandwich made to please at any time of day is the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich. Tender, juicy white meat is served in a cheesy ciabatta bun.

It’s crunchy and delicious, and topped only by the toppings. Whipped feta, roasted tomato, and mint-marinated cucumbers bring life to every bite.

Gnudi and Scallops sounded too good to miss, and we were sure glad we didn’t. House-made ricotta gnudi take on the size and shape of the seared scallops, but their mild and doughy delicacy stands out against the tender, sweet sea-spray of the scallops.

Served wonderfully warm, it makes this seaside standby more divine for dinner. The buttery brioche roll is toasty and sweet, the fresh lobster was lightly dressed in a lemon butter, and the coleslaw was the perfect side.

We were treated to more luscious lobster Warm Lobster Roll in The Taste of Nantucket. Great as a starter to share or the main event, this comes with fresh fried clam fritters, cool lobster salad, and a piping hot bowl of clam chowder. With all your favorites on one plate, deciding on dinner has never been easier.

Hard as it was to choose a favorite, the first pick for all of us was the Halibut entree (cover photo). Seared to a crackle yet pearly white within, the fish was served with Korean spiced quinoa and a lemon caper butter sauce with al dente asparagus and carrots on the side. This and many other options are Taste of Nantucket made gluten free, so you can indulge while staying healthy.

You’ll find Debba, the Queen of The Crown, working every aspect of the restaurant: if she’s not showing you to your table, she’ll be taking your drink orders or bringing you dinner. It’s an obvious display of the passion she and the rest of her crew have—they make it their mission that you leave happy. So come alone, come with friends, or come with family. can affect the butterfly’s ability to migrate.

What changes when a wild monarch is raised in captivity? There is some environmental cue that the insect isn’t getting that it needs for successful migration.

What that cue is, is still unknown. Researchers ruled out light by raising wild butterflies in a greenhouse with natural light. Other factors are being tested now.

So, what does this mean on Nantucket? Please don’t take the monarchs out of the wild! Even if you’re careful. Even if your kids will love it. Even if you’re a teacher.

We want them to succeed and breed so we can see them again next year. Monarchs know how to do monarchs the best.

What can you do to help?

Let the milkweed be and plant more! Maybe you loved the milkweed blossoms at the edges of your yard, but they are starting to look scraggly. Please don’t remove them just yet. They are still a salad bar for our milkweed loving insects! And they need all the leaves they can get. Caterpillars are voracious!

Removing milkweed plants reduces the possibility of it coming back next year.

We need the seed pods to mature and open on their own. If you’re inclined to pick milkweed from other places to feed monarchs, collecting “in the wild” also means potentially removing from private property. Most of the conservation land on Nantucket is actually private property that we are all allowed to enjoy. Please “take nothing but pictures” as the saying goes.

What’s so important about the milkweeds for monarchs? When the monarch eggs hatch into larvae, otherwise known as caterpillars, the caterpillars’ main job is to grow, so they spend most of their time eating. They only eat milkweed, which is why this plant is so important – without milkweed there are no monarchs.

The caterpillars eat their fill for about two weeks, and then they spin protective cases around themselves to enter the pupa stage, which is also called a "chrysalis."

About a week or two later, they finish their metamorphosis and emerge as fully formed, black-and-orange, adult monarch butterflies. This is when the nectar feeding begins. At this stage, monarchs need nectar flowers to bulk up for the big migration. As September rolls around, goldenrods and the multitude of fall asters help continued on page 35

Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer Miacomet Pond.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport.

Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset.

Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond on Nantucket. Good for young children. Parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Snapping turtles may be encountered.

Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals.

Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Guided tours with Trustee naturalists offered in-season. Seasonal hunting permitted. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.

BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line.

There are plenty of places downtown and around the island where you can enjoy your coffee or takeout. You'll find park benches appropriately spaced along most streets in the heart of town. There are even a few areas where several benches are clustered together but where you can still socially distance. In addition to the benches, here are our favorite parks and sitting areas where you can stay 6-feet from others but not feel quarantined. Just remember to respect your surroundings and fellow residents, and clean up after yourself!

Massachusetts state restrictions on restaurants have begun to ease, and island eateries are offering distanced indoor dining in addition to outdoor table service and takeout. The Atheneum Park Entrance to this is along India Street, to the right of the steps into the Nantucket Atheneum. There are benches and a grassy area where children like to play.

The Nantucket Whaling Museum 13 Broad Street has benches placed in front of the museum

Children's Beach Park Harbor View Way is a short stroll from downtown. There are benches and a grassy area, along with a small stretch of beach. Limited parking is available.

Sculpture Pocket Park There is a “pocket park” on India Street between Federal & Centre sts that is adorned with sculptures. Benches on the bricked area provide seating.

Town Pier Park Walk down Washington Street, past the Handlebar Cafe (which also has a few benches for customers) and go beyond Brant Point Marine. Here you’ll find benches and a path to the water. Parking across the street in the town lot.

Fair Street Park At the corner of Main & Fair sts. This park is in the heart of town, so it has no parking of its own, but there are usually parking spots nearby. It has benches & stone seating around fountain and is beautifully adorned with fresh plants.

“Arthur’s Park” portion of the Land Bank's Consue Springs Property On the edge of town beyond Consue Springs. It is a bit of a walk from Main Street.

There is one picnic table and grassy area. No parking is available.

Pocket Park at Francis & Union This small grassy area with two benches is about a half-mile or so walk from downtown Nantucket. It’s a lovely place to sit with some views of the water, but is not on the water. There is no parking.

Old South Road Park Near the Airport Owned by the Town of Nantucket, this spacious grassy space dotted with young trees and sculpture is ideal for children who need to run (but keep them away from the busy streets! There is a paved pathway and several benches. No parking is available here, but it is next to an NRTA bus stop.

the monarchs’ search for nectar.

September marks the beginning of fall migration for millions of monarch butterflies. Adult monarchs are partway through their lifecycle, but their reproduction is on hold. These monarchs are different from their parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents. Previous generations completed their life cycle in four weeks.

Each of these previous generations migrated north, resulting in four generations over the course of the summer. Butterflies in this last generation are members of the generation that migrates south, often called the monarch “super generation”.

With all this talk about monarchs, let’s not forget about the other milkweed loving beast – the milkweed tussock moth. The hairy caterpillar of the milkweed tussock moth (MTM) looks like an orange, white, and black teddy bear in its late stage of development. Just like monarchs, the MTM relies on milkweed plants for survival to adulthood. It ingests the toxins from the milkweed and stores it in their bodies. Their bright coloration warns predators (like birds) of their toxicity.

These native caterpillars need the milkweed just like the monarchs and they have evolved alongside each other. Please don’t pick them off in favor of monarchs.

They all need the milkweed.

As adult moths, the MTM is much less charismatic than the monarch butterflies.

Their gray wings and hairy yellow-orange abdomens don’t inspire a conservation movement. They also lack a cool migration story residing in one place their entire lives. On Nantucket, monarchs are more like summer residents while the MTM is an old salt. At the end of the caterpillar development when the MTM caterpillars are fat and happy, the milkweed tussock moths pupate and spend the winter as hairy cocoons. They emerge as adult moths in early summer to mate and lay eggs starting the cycle all over again.

While less exciting than monarchs, efforts to increase milkweed populations and protect monarchs from pesticides also protect this native species.

No matter who you are or where you live, you can help monarchs and milkweedloving species by getting involved today. Start by planting milkweed and nectar plants that are native to your area; whether it’s Nantucket or your home location.

Garden organically to minimize your impacts on monarchs, their food plants, and other pollinators. And support organizations that protect native habitat.
