Ocean Meets Sky: A Nighttime Exploration by Suzanne Daub
From 9 to 10 pm next Tuesday night, June 21, scientists from Nantucket’s Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) will lead an expedition to find and study members of a species that is older than the dinosaurs right here on our island beaches, under stars that are even older. Estimated to be more than 400 million years old, the Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) can be found from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico, and every year they travel to shorelines to spawn. When the tide is high, horseshoe crabs make their way through the surf to mate and to lay their eggs at night. A female horseshoe crab can deposit approximately 4,000 eggs in clusters, and she’ll do this several times, laying up to around 20,000 eggs in a single night and up to 100,000 during each meeting season. June 20 is International Horseshoe Crab Day, and June 21 is the Summer Solstice, making this Tuesday an ideal time for the Maria Mitchell Association to offer another of their fun interdisciplinary excursions. This Horseshoe Crab Solstice Walk will be led by MMA Director of Astronomy Dr. Regina Jorgenson and MMA Aquarium Director Jack Dubinsky. According to Dubinsky, participants will search for horseshoe crabs and learn about their biology. Dr. Jorgenson will explain the physics of lunar phases, seasons, and tides, and help participants identify the constellations above. With Dubinsky, she will discuss how marine organisms, including horseshoe crabs, may use Earth’s magnetic field to navigate in the ocean. For more than a decade, MMA scientists have been conducting horseshoe crab surveys along Monomoy Beach. “We survey them during breeding season— on the full and new moons—and report the data [to a regional organization] to help manage the fishery…” explained Dubinsky. “Most recent data suggest the horseshoe crab population here is stable. Compared to pre-industrial era, there are far fewer, but their population does not appear to be continuing to decline.” continued on page 12

At 9 am this Friday, June 17, the first author talk of the 2022 Nantucket Book Festival will feature a conversation between Ben Shattuck and Nathaniel Philbrick about walking, retracing journeys, finding a nation, and finding yourself. Both authors explored these themes in recent books: Shattuck in Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau and Philbrick in his Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy. A graduate of Cornell and of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Ben Shattuck has written for The Paris Review Daily, The Harvard Review, Salon.com, The Common, The Morning News, and other publications. He was a Verney Fellow at the Nantucket Historical Association in 2014, and, more recently, he won Pushcart Prize for a short story and the PEN America Best Debut Short Story award. Six Walks is Shattuck’s first book, and it follows the author’s emotional and spiritual transformation during years of life changes. A personal narrative woven with observations, character sketches, introspection, and essential quotes from his inspiration, Henry David Thoreau, the book draws you in as though you were walking alongside both Ben and Henry. A Whale of a Story
a Nantucket tradition.
by Carl Oscar Olson History is a gift. Good or bad, right or wrong, it shows us where we came from and, if we’re wise enough to pay attention and listen to it, where not to tread again. And in spite of all the schooling, all the television and movies, and all the stories passed down from our elders, there are still pieces of our past that, to many, remain undiscovered. Today, it is hard to imagine people of certain color or creed having an impossible time living the American Dream. But looking back on our history one will see a very different picture. If opportunity did arise, folks faced the impossible in an attempt to better themselves. In Skip Finley’s book Whaling Captains of Color: America's First Meritocracy, after years of extensive research, he shows the many ways whaling was a foot in the door for people of color to finally find their way into being accepted in American society. Finley shows how Native Americans, African Americans, and Cape Verdeans not only served on ships out at sea for months or for years, but became masters of them. He relates the individual stories of captains and crews and mixes those with what the whaling industry was and portrays the rawness of life aboard a whaling vessel. Though these men faced impossible oppression on the mainland, the ocean was a place where the demand never ceased and death was always near. Whether or not a man could do his job well overcame whatever racism the crew may have felt. Skip Finley has worn many hats in his life. He started his successful and prolific career in radio, becoming a well-known executive and station owner. From there, he served as Vice Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters and Chairman of the Radio Advertising Bureau, having had a hand in virtually all broadcasting industry boards of directors and serving on their executive committees. Throughout his time on air, he kept watch over 44 radio stations, 5 of which he owned, encompassing 18 different markets. His experience includes successes with radio networks, syndicated programs, and even one satellite channel. continued on page 20

by Robert P. Barsanti Main Street has many comfortable seats on a Sunday morning. The dramas and excitement of Saturday night have washed or rolled down the cobbles, and Sunday morning comes gleaming up the harbor. It dapples the bricks through the elms, reflects off the gallery windows, and lights up my coffee cup. The air is cool and clear, the traffic light, and the parade interesting. The running shoes and sunglasses rushed by at a healthy pace in both their legs and their lips. Untied running shoes pushed a carriage by while Mommy remained home and asleep. Flip-flops came up the street, picked up a rack of coffees and a bag of danishes, then headed back down. Sandals did some window-shopping and hand-holding while high-tops was patient. Dress shoes and her grandson walked past, holding the blue-lettered missal. Nobody carries a newspaper. They carry cell-phones, iPads, and water bottles. Some have last night’s clutch and this morning’s coffee. Hands held hands, held jackets, held shopping bags, and held fun little strappy sandles that would break on the stones. But no books, no papers, and no magazines. Once in my recent past, I had had the pleasure of having a newspaper reserved for me at the Hub. On Sunday morning, I would slip past the congested traffic that circled the counter, pick the rolled up paper that had been left for me, then back outside to enjoy Doonesbury, Funky Winkerbean, and Will McDonogh on my own. The reserved box wasn’t only necessary to reconfirm my overly inflated sense of self-worth, it was also necessary to insure you got a paper. Only so many newspapers arrived on the island at any time. As soon as they were gone, you were out of luck. Today, the news comes in a hose. It pesters us with a ring and a vibration to grab us to Buzzfeed’s “Ten Secrets I Didn’t Know About Caddyshack.” In truth, whenever I am standing in a grocery (or ice cream) line, I pop the phone open to see what car crashes are happening in the world. The whole purpose of social media is to watch for one car crash or another. Someone says the wrong thing,

There are three species of native freshwater turtles on Nantucket (in addition to a few illegally released pets). You can find previous articles about the beloved spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) or the ubiquitous and prehistoric snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). The third turtle species to roam Nantucket’s freshwater and uplands is the common, native eastern painted turtle (Chrysemys picta picta). The painted turtle is the most widespread native turtle of North America and they are fairly abundant throughout their range (coast to coast through the northern US and southern Canada, south to the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana to southwestern Alabama). Oftentimes when things are common and native they are overlooked and understudied. It’s like being ever-present makes it somehow less special. In scientific research we see this phenomenon with study subjects. The things more often studied are rare, endangered, or spectacularly charismatic. The flipside of that are the maligned species that are invasive, toxic, or otherwise cause harm which warrant research dollars and investigation. However, we can learn a lot from looking closely at our most common native species, such as the painted turtle. Painted turtles (in our case the eastern variety) can be distinguished from other turtles by the bright yellow stripes behind the eyes and by the beautiful red and orange markings on the edge of their smooth, dark shell (carapace) and the bony plate on the underside (plastron). Our painted turtles are generally bigger than the spotted turtles at maturity but much smaller than the massive snapping turtles found in Nantucket’s deeper bodies of water. Painted turtles are ubiquitous in most freshwater ecosystems on Nantucket, including ponds, bogs, marshes, and wooded swamps. Their ability to adapt to aquatic environments altered by humans contributes to the relative stability of many populations of the species. Like snapping turtles, painted turtles are omnivorous. With a large part of their diet consisting of insects, salamanders, frogs, and small fish, but they will also eat aquatic plants, like a little side salad. The preferred habitat of the painted turtle has aquatic vegetation, soft sub-

The Brotherhood Is Back!
Big News: a Big Gallery
After a 2-year hiatus, an island institution is open and celebrating its 50th anniversary season with good food, good drinks, and good company! The Brotherhood of Thieves was a long-time island favorite, with a huge demand for tables in this 1840s whaling bar and lines stretching down Broad Street during July. It was a winter favorite for island residents. Now reopened under new management, the Brotherhood will be offering four different experiences. Open now is their downstairs tavern, offering tasty libations (including Cisco beer on draft), custom cocktails (try their Broho Fog Bank or their Brant Point with Triple 8 cranberry), and a “ridiculous selection” of bourbons, rum, tequila, gin, and more! And yes—the Brotherhood’s famous Curley Fries are back! Try them with one of their juicy burgers, oysters and shrimp from the Raw Bar, a summery salad, hearty sandwich, or their chef’s special entrees. Upstairs is home to the Cisco Kitchen and Bar with a surf shack vibe, as well as the Notch Bar, which will showcase Triple 8’s award-winning Notch whiskey as well as an extensive assortment of other whiskeys and higher-level spirits. Of course, the Brotherhood wouldn’t be complete with its patio. A celebration of a traditional beer garden, it will have table seating, bar seating for eight, and will serve the full menu. The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) returned to Straight Wharf this season when it opened the Big Gallery on the second floor of the Thomas Macy Warehouse. An exciting collaboration with the Nantucket Historical Association brings together two island institutions that share an important history with this iconic Nantucket landmark on Straight Wharf. The Thomas Macy Warehouse, which dates back to 1847, was home to AAN’s Kenneth Taylor Galleries, administration offices, and educational classes from 1945 to 1988. The newly created gallery space has been affectionately named “Big Gallery” as a tribute to AAN’s “Little Gallery,” that occupied the small, shingled building next door to the Thomas Macy Warehouse for about fifty years. The Big Gallery will provide even more exhibition opportunities for AAN’s artist members. This year AAN will showcase Nantucket works of art in different exhibitions into December 2022. This is the first time that AAN artwork will once again, after 33 years, grace the walls of this building. These exhibitions will run in concert with the regularly scheduled shows at the AAN’s downtown Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Gallery. One of the highlights of the season will be an exhibition of historically important island artworks from the AAN’s Permanent Collection. Currently showing in the Big Gallery until June 27 is Coastal Impressions: Landscapes & Seascapes, featuring large works with coastal themes.
Nantucket Preservation Trust Hosts Scholars for Annual Preservation Symposium Nantucket Preservation Trust will host its 6th annual Preservation Symposium this week on June 22 and 23. The conference will feature scholars from around the country and on Nantucket, presenting research on subjects that have been traditionally excluded from the dominant narrative of historic preservation, including Black history, LGBTQ history, 20th century history, and other topics. The afternoon of Wednesday, June 22 will feature casual pre-conference historic site tours, demonstrations, and an opening reception. The conference will convene on Thursday, June 23 with presentations at historic Sherburne Hall, upstairs at 11 Centre Street. The speakers’ presentations on Thursday will also be livestreamed for remote participation. Dr. Fallon Samuels Aidoo, the Jean Brainard Boebel Endowed Professor of Historic Preservation at the University of New Orleans, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Aidoo’s work centers on urban design, planning, and preservation at the intersection of heritage and hazards. Her work includes research with the African American Heritage Trail of Martha’s Vineyard. Other speakers include Donnamarie Barnes, curator and archivist at Sylvester Manor Educational Farm in Shelter Island, NY; Dr. Kevin D. Murphy, Andrew W. Mellon Chair in the Humanities and Professor and Chair, Department of History of Art at Vanderbilt University; and Dr. Catherine W. Zipf, Executive Director of the Bristol Historical & Preservation Society in Bristol, RI. The conference will also feature a panel discussion among Nantucket historians and researchers including Nikoline Bohr, Michelle Elzay, Jascin Leonardo Finger, Dr. Frances Karttunen, Betsy Tyler, and Barbara White. The Nantucket Preservation Symposium is presented by Nantucket Preservation Trust in partnership with the University of Florida’s Preservation Institute Nantucket and will kick off PIN’s 50th summer on the island. years. Part One is expanded from his essay published in The Common in 2019 about his first three walks and his interlude at Walden. “A year or so passed, and an editor contacted me to say how she liked that essay. I thought I’d do three more walks, and, at that point, I knew I’d be writing a book,” Shattuck explained. Why Thoreau? The months before he ventured out on his first walk had been difficult for Shattuck: he was recovering from a painful injury and haunted by a past relationship. It was a time “when I couldn’t find a way out of the doubt, fear, shame, and sadness that had arranged a constellation of grief around me,” Shattuck writes in the beginning of Part One. The previous Christmas, his father had given him Thoreau’s Cape Cod, a meditative chronicle of walks along the beach. “I opened it at random to Thoreau’s description of snow on a field, and I was captivated. Then I read his description of bubbles caught in ice… my God that’s a beautiful description… I realized the whole book was a gold brick. His journals are truly stunning.” Ben read Thoreau’s journal entries daily “to get through each day: it was therapeutic. In the morning, I’d get up and read his journal entries from centuries before…it was like an invisible guide to my day…Thoreau is much more relatable than I had thought…[his writing] is a perfect lens for the world, to bring into focus the real beauty around us.” The following May, with Thoreau’s writing as his guide, Ben set out to walk along Cape Cod “from the elbow to Provincetown’s fingertip, as Henry had done.” He journaled and sketched as he walked, and, a few months later, Ben took Thoreau with him again as he traced Henry’s walk up Mount Katahdin in Maine. Walden was Shattuck’s next destination, followed by another of Thoreau’s walks: a hike up Wachusett Mountain. By the end of Part One, which covers these early walks, Shattuck has accomplished more than he could have imagined when he started: “Henry went on his walks to find the veins connecting him to nature; I went to shed my dreams. Instead of shedding, I’d added more to life. More people and more landscape and more stars. How lucky it felt, like the high tide came into my life.” Shattuck was in a very different place emotionally when he took the walks he writes about in Part Two of Six Walks, but the discoveries are no less transfor-

mative. “In Part One – I’m walking towards… I’m escaping and trying to follow this ghost of Thoreau…on the run… The second part of the book is about returning home. At the end I’m with my fiancé back on Cape Cod, and it means something different than it did before… it’s not a frantic escape as in Part One. “This book is for anyone who wants a soft intro to Henry David Thoreau—I cherry-pick some of his best sentiments, descriptions… Thoreau was a master of scale… his nature is on a one-foot-by-one-foot scale: bubbles in ice, a cricket, a butterfly landing on milkweed, frost on the window… So much of his nature is all around us still. In a world where the climate is changing on such a large scale, what do we do with that information? When you look back at Thoreau, you realize there is so much around us still that Henry saw and appreciated. It could ignite an awareness of all the beauty around us.” What’s next for Ben Shattuck? Look for a collection of his short stories to be published in 2023. And his short story History of Sound has been purchased for a screen play, leading Shattuck to explore that style of writing, which he enjoys: “It’s the best—it feels like cheating—there is no exposition, you don’t have to worry about the quality of prose. A long description gets in the way. Flowery prose does not work. It’s like morse code of speaking.” Ben Shattuck’s accomplishments are impressive. In addition to being a published writer, he is a painter (his sketches illustrate Six Walks). He is director and curator of the Dedee Shattuck Gallery. Along with his brother he runs the Davoll’s General Store with a café and a pub. And he is father to toddler Ida Lupine with his wife Jenny Slate. “In grad school I had so much time to write, and I made a lot of bad writing… being a father and running the general store took up so much of my time last year…there was a moment when I saw the deadline for my next two short stories approaching and realized I had to change my habits. I would wake up really early, give the baby her bottle, then my mom would take the baby, and I would go to the studio WITH NO INTERNET (that’s important) and write for three hours. I call it ‘strike quick and get out of there.’ I just assigned myself the time, and I’ve written some of my best work.” The 2022 Nantucket Book Festival event Nat Philbrick & Ben Shattuck: In Conversation will be held in the Methodist Church, 2 Centre Street, at 9am this Friday. It’s difficult to predict exactly where they’ll turn up, but if you miss the Horseshoe Crab Solstice Walk and want to see horseshoe crabs on Nantucket on your own, Dubinsky recommends looking along Madaket Beach and Eel Point. “They appear to come closer to the beach at the night high tide.” If you see one dug into the sand and not upside down, leave it alone. If you find a horseshoe crab that is upside down, flip it over and put it back in the water. “Horseshoe crabs can survive a tidal cycle outside of the water if they are not upside down,” Dubinsky explained. “If their gills dry out, then they cannot breathe.” Maria Mitchell Association is an island-based science organization that is interdisciplinary and devoted to sharing their expertise and love of learning with all who wish to join them. Because their carapace does not grow with them, these creatures molt up to an average of 16 times before reaching maturity. Their physiology has remained largely unchanged over time, which is why they’re often referred to as “living fossils.” Horseshoe crabs are much more closely related to arachnids like spiders and ticks than to true crabs. Some of their favorite foods are sea worms, mollusks, and crustaceans. Their tails, called telsons, aren’t poisonous or venomous; they’re mainly used to steer and flip themselves over in case they get stuck on their backs. Flap-like structures near their abdomen, called book gills, enable horseshoe crabs to breathe underwater … but sometimes, they use them for the goofier purpose of swimming upside-down. It’s mainly the youngsters that engage in this behavior. With 9 eyes in total along with various light receptors near their telson, horseshoe crabs have insanely good vision.

A great way to see them in their natural habitat is to take a kayak or canoe out on one of Nantucket’s great ponds: Miacomet, Hummock, Long Pond or the smaller ponds like Maxcy. Quietly gliding along the water, you may be able to get reasonably close to a basking site before hearing the “plop” as a turtle drops in to the cool water. Many people have reported seeing painted turtles lately along trails and crossing roads. That is because now is prime nesting time for all of our turtles. Nesting season is from late May to early July, with a peak in mid-June. You’ll see them wandering out of the

water into the upland, sometimes crossing roads and paths to reach a favorite nesting ground. They nest usually close to water’s edge in sandy or loamy area with open canopy, but any sandy spot seems to do. Typically 5-8 eggs are deposited in shallow, excavated depressions. The eggs hatch in late summer or early fall, but hatchlings for painted turtles usually remain in the nest until they emerge the following spring. Hatchlings are more carnivorous than adults and grow quickly, sometimes doubling in size in their first growing season. Please be aware that right now turtles are crossing the pavement to get from their wintering grounds to another wetland or water area or to their nesting areas. If you see a turtle in the road, please avoid it! If it is safe to do so, here are a few tips essential for turtle safety and for your safety: • First: slow down, stop, and let the turtle pass. If it is stopped or if you think you can SAFELY move the turtle, follow the directions below. • If moving a turtle, always bring it to the road edge in the direction it was headed. If you don’t s/he will likely try to cross the road again. (Turtles have places to go, too!) • Never pick up a turtle by the tail. You can permanently damage their vertebrae. • Even if snapping turtles look old and slow, they can move fast and are likely to bite because they feel threatened. If you have a shovel or a broom in your car, you can help them scoot across the road. It is also a good time of year to remember that we should leave wild animals where they are–that goes for turtles as well as baby birds, deer, and rabbits. tected species. The eastern painted and snapping turtles require a permit to possess live or dead individuals (including shells). Resist the urge to take home any of these critters. The care requirements in captivity can be astonishing. A turtle’s needs can be easily met in the wild, where there’s lots of food, water, sunlight, and space to meet their individual, social, and ecological needs. It is difficult, if not impossible, to meet these same requirements in a human’s home. They may seem very vulnerable, but they’ve evolved to persist over time. Nature knows best! The Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) is currently collecting data on freshwater turtle species of their property. With the extensive wetland habitats throughout the Eel Point Road property, knowing more about their habitat use throughout the seasons helps in the planning of trails and conservation management. Spotted turtles are a conservation target of this work, but LLNF scientists are also collecting life history data on our common painted turtles. The data collected on size, weight, location, and sex of individuals helps build a baseline dataset for the organization. Data on common species when populations are abundant, help provide vital information in the future as things change; whether it’s population size, species health, habitat loss, etc. This is only the second year of data collection for this common species, but LLNF plans to continue the project for at least the next few years. If you are interested in more about our Nantucket reptiles, check out the Facebook page “Herping Nantucket” where people share sightings of reptiles around the island. You can also often find a painted turtle at the Mara Mitchell Association’s Natural Science Museum on Vestal Street, where they have a live animal room.

Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Finley found his love for the islands while vacationing as a child. He and his family spent summers in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. His family purchased their house in 1955 for $4,600, but it was no easy feat. “Dad’s white local attorney had to buy it and sell it back to us.” Back then, the trip from New York was a longer than a few hours. “It was almost wholly along the serpentine, stoplight-speckled Route 1. Today’s four-hour, 250-mile drive was then an arduous nine to ten hours in Dad’s Pontiac station wagon, crammed with a season’s worth of clothes and supplies.” He remembers a car full of kids and adults trying their best to keep cool heads throughout the steamy and slow 9-hour journey. His father, having come from Mobile, Alabama, knew that there was no good reason to stop the car during this day-long journey. “This was the 50s, when minds weren’t so open. Stopping was for gas and bathrooms only to avoid unseemly contact with white folks whose horizons were not very broad.” Skip didn’t start writing until what he calls his “fifth failed attemped at retirement.” He and his wife moved to the Vineyard full time in 1999, where he had been spending summers by the sea since the age of six. He began a small circular known as The Vineyard Vine as a hobby. From June 2012 to June 2017, he wrote a weekly Oak Bluffs column for the Vineyard Gazette. Looking back on his many landmark accomplishments in life, he recalls: “I didn’t get here because I was cute, because I was cool, and definitely not because I’m black. I got here because I could do the job. And that’s what the book is about. It’s about these guys who could do the job and were damn good at it long before anyone thought they had a chance of doing anything at all.” Whaling was really the first American industry to allow for any kind of real diversity, and the number of colored men on those boats was far from insignificant. Like Finley says, a man working on a ship rose to captain not because he was well connected or white, but because he was good at his job. There were many long, quiet days at sea, so along the way, if he was lucky, he would also learn the art of navigation and how to read and write. archives and interviews with people whose ancestors were whaling masters, Finley culls stories from the lives of more than 50 black whaling captains to create a portrait of what life was like for these leaders of color on the high seas. Whenever a whale was spotted, the crew, often including the captain, would jump into action. The men would row to the whale and attack it, oftentimes with the captain delivering the fatal blow. The first, second, or third mate and boat steerer could eventually have opportunities to move into increasingly responsible roles. Finley explains in his book how this skills-based system propelled captains of color to the highest ranks. Whaling was easily one of the largest industries in the country during it’s time, comparable only to the production of cotton, agriculture, and the slave trade. Its main product—oil—lit lamps during the Revolutionary War, cured leather in the heartland, and lubricated the many machines that carried our country through the Industrial Revolution. The whaling industry made cities in Massachusetts and beyond prosper. Money made from ventures at sea were invested into railroads and textiles, among other industries. Millions of whales died in an enterprise that lasted more than two centuries. Finley’s book concludes as both reason and politics come to a head to eventually ruin the industry. Reasons such as international conflict, unpredictable weather, disease, and simply the fact that whales are a non-renewable natural resource having been hunted close to extinction. The timing was right, because the end of the Civil War began to pave the way for these captains of color to find a better life on dry land and, at the same time, marked the end of an industry that boomed for hundreds of years. Finley’s book was released in June of 2020, when our country was in the midst of much turmoil, some of which is still simmering. “It was a complete coincidence,” Finley recalls. Whaling Captains of Color: America's First Meritocracy has just been released in its second printing and is now also available in softcover as well as digitally on Amazon for Kindle. tweets the wrong thing, wears the wrong thing, or reveals the wrong thing and the eighth graders on the top row of the bleachers engage. We can rewatch the car crash, the tires spinning down the road, the shattering glass, and then the commentary and the commentary on the commentary, and then the memes. We are all eighth graders watching Digital Dodgeball. Other commentators have filled my phone with diatribes and harangues against the phone, as if it was kudzu and could be cut and poisoned into control. Clearly it can’t. Doomscrolling has evolved into a national hobby, like greenstamping and decoupage. According to the Annenberg Center, almost half of all adults spend the time before going to bed wandering down the pit holes and viper strewn paths of social media. I am not immune to this; Twitter sends me to MSNBC to someone else and the latest outrage bubbles up. In my short-attention-span Digital Dodgeball, I am hoping that someone gets hit by a wrench. (If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.) Or that someone else catches the Dodgeball. But not enough people are either throwing or catching. Instead, I scroll through, hoping to find something and afraid of missing something exciting. Few people throw wrenches or balls in the newspaper. Reading it requires space, time, and patience. The news, such as it is, happened yesterday. And the wrench-throwing wasn’t important enough to merit an article below the fold, or even in Metro page 4. Reading (as you know, dear reader) requires a calorie burn. The words rise up off the page and into your mind like so many Lego blocks, falling into people, places, and positions. They never wind up exactly as the writer intended, but he isn’t doing the building, is he? On the other hand, viewing puts the Lego ships, houses, and people into your mind wholly intact. You need not assemble, you need not experiment, and you need not test anything else. You can fail at Lego assembly, just as you can fail at reading. Happens all the time. It is supposed to be a race car, but you can’t make the bricks click and stay. One moment you are sitting in a comfortable chair with a cold beverage and the next you can’t make heads or tales out of Melville, Joyce, or Jodi Picoult. A June continued on page 23

morning in Dublin remains a pile of words and lego bricks. You fail at it; you give up; and you go to Twitter. When I return to the pages of a book, my mind hiccups and lets the clutch slip. The topic doesn’t change fast enough and the pictures don’t move. When I read on an iPad, I have to prevent myself from slipping away and into Digital Dodgeball. Once I stick myself into a book, reading relaxes me. I settle into another world, another person, another place. The pages turn slower, the people meander, and you don’t need to Fear Missing Out. It’s all Right Here. On a flight from Salt Lake City, I forced myself into one of the books I was carrying. Around me, my seat mates were watching Game of Thrones, Rick and Morty, or something murky on their phones. Without the distraction of the internet, I settled into a book and found myself, at one annoying section, closing it in embarrassment. Aware of this silliness, I returned to the humiliation of the text and kept going. Nantucket has always been a reader’s island. We support two book stores, an Atheneum, and the Take It or Leave It. You can’t miss anything on Madaquecham, because it is all there: sand, waves, and sun. The spinning world revolves around this still point. But until you get there, you can sit on a bench downtown, grab a cup of coffee and help me with the crossword.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits.
