The Start of Memorial Day

by Amy Jenness In the days following the Confederate Army’s attack and capture of North Carolina’s Fort Sumter in 1861, island residents worried that the South would also target Nantucket. In April a voluntary group of men called the “Island Guards” met at Mill Hill each day to march and physically condition themselves for combat. At a special town meeting that same month, Nantucket voters agreed to arm the men and approved $5,000 for 100 muskets, two bronze cannons, and ammunition.

The attack on Fort Sumter ignited the U.S. Civil War, and by May it was clear the Confederates had their hands full fighting in the South so Nantucket could rest a bit easier. But the Island Guards were still committed to fighting. Nantucket-born George Nelson Macy had been newly commissioned a Lieutenant in Boston and asked to return to Nantucket to recruit volunteers for the new 20th Massachusetts Regiment of Volunteers. When he arrived on island he found 21 Island Guards ready to sign up.

In all, Nantucket sent 339 men to fight in the U.S. Civil War — 213 in the Union Army and 126 in the Union Navy or Revenue Cutter Service (a precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard). They were a mix of seamen, farmers, and free African American men. A total of 80 Nantucket men would serve in the 20th Massachusetts Regiment of Volunteers alone. With so many island men fighting in one regiment, Nantucketers paid particular attention to the movements of the 20th.

In their book The Civil War: The Nantucket Experience, authors Richard E. Miller and Robert F. Mooney note that leaders in the 20th Regiment dreaded having a Nantucket man join their company. Although they were in better physical shape than their compatriots, islanders were strikingly indifferent to authority. Lieutenant Oliver Wendall Holmes is said to have complained that the Nantucket men left the drilling field without permission to visit the local tavern or swim in the Neponset River at day’s end. When Holmes reprimanded the men, they declared continued on page 12

Fire and Rain

Sail Endeavor

by Robert P. Barsanti I was lucky enough to sit on the back porch of the Nantucket Hotel on Saturday evening, well out of the passing rain showers and white shirted winos on the street. Instead, I looked into the bottom of glass of bourbon and heard “Fire and Rain” for the three thousandth time. Now, I haven’t minded listening to “Fire and Rain” three thousand times, and I am sure that I will listen to it for another three thousand times before I slip beneath the waves. It remains an affecting song about love and loss, whether it is played on a record player, tape cassette, CD, DVD, digital streaming download, or covered live, on the new back porch of an old hotel on Nantucket.

In the twenty-first century, we grow old listening to the music of our youth.

The entire music industry has shaped itself into a repeating wave that serves up the same music again and again. This is not conspiracy foisted on us by aging rockers and greedy producers, rather we demand this. We sit in our cars and demand that the music we listened to in college dorms be replayed for us with perfect fidelity so that it sounds as if James Taylor has just heard the news of Suzanne’s death “yesterday morning,” not fifty years ago.

I am not sure, but I think Carolyn Dateo introduced the song to me when I was a Junior in high school. At the time, she was an artistic and enthusiastic girl that I was too smart to have a crush on, but managed to write to every week or so. In one of her letters, she listed off twenty books she wanted to read (including Cat’s Cradle, The Overcoat, and Troutfishing in America) and sent along a mix tape compiled from music she had recorded off of the radio. Since I didn’t have a crush on her, I didn’t listen to it all of the time and only, by sheer boredom, managed to write down all of the music on it onto a sheet of paper that, somehow, has fallen down the well of time to my current desk. “Fire and Rain” started off the B side of that cassette, along with a list of songs that are currently played a thousand times an hour on Pandora and Spotify.

I would not want to relive my high school years,even if Carolyn promised to go to the Prom with me. I suppose, if I was to be given more money, more continued on page 8

confidence, and a dorm room at Phillips Exeter, I might find a way to try again, but if I was to go back to those years and relive them, day to day, song by song, I would find them even more maddening and frustrating now than I found them then.

You know you are old when you start looking back instead of forward. Like Gatsby, we back into the future while staring at the receding past. Except this time, the past has been edited, cleaned, and digitized. Digital hiss has been eliminated from the music, along with static, scratches, and skips. If we want to “Make America Great Again” we have to pretend that America was flawless then and is pretty flawed right now. Politicians would have me believe that sitting on this porch, drinking this drink, and listening to music with friends can somehow be improved upon.

Memorial Day looks forward and backward. It fills with hope for a summer season, with stores, restaurants, and golf courses eager to serve this year’s vacation instagram background. It also echoes all of those other Memorial Days in the past. Nantucket rhymes over and over in the same location, one year to the next, one decade to the next, one generation to the next. The porch I sat on had once been a part of the Gordon Folger, back when the roof sagged, the windows leaked, and it had the only salad bar on-island. This pool, this furniture, these lovely steamship blueprints are all brand-spanking new.

My own Memorial Day brings my son’s birthday followed by my own. As long as we live, we rhyme at the end of May. My son is cresting into his fifteenth year. We celebrated this by making “Slutty Brownies” giving him video games, and watching “Paul Blart, Mall Cop.” It may have been the first birthday in the last ten that did not feature Lego in some form or another. It stops me to think he has outgrown Lego; I want to step back a day or two and buy him another set, just to undo the calendar of his life. I am too young to have a child too old for Lego; my life keeps spinning by. In fact, I am sure that I could buy him a Star Destroyer on Amazon right now and sent it back in time to him.

But to travel back in time would be to lie. It would be to copy your math answers from the back of the book and pretend to have done the work yourself.

When I lived through his earlier birthdays, I did not know the young man my son would become, a person capable of poetry, of song, and of truly disturbed cartoons. When he was ten, I fretted over the future while I enjoyed the present. To go back in time would be to whisper in my younger ear “It will all work out.”

I would be far more tempted to really send the hands of time back before I know fire or rain, when I was sixteen years old and spent my birthday at Fenway Park, thinking about Carolyn Dateo. If I could America great again, we would go to the movies. I wouldn’t whisper the happy answer into my young ears. I would instead point out all of the people who would be dead in the near future. I would ask him to hold onto each moment and enjoy every sandwich.

Golden memories of the way things never were grace the heads of life’s victors. The winners have the luxury of refining the tragedy out of their lives.

They didn’t lose their houses. They didn’t get wounded. They didn’t die in a far-off war. For us, the victors, the story of the past has a happy ending. “Fire and Rain,” like Memorial Day itself, is about survival. We survived all of our ignorant yesterdays and hope to make it into our sadder tomorrows. We’re here now, in the blessed present, toasting the boring hope of more days just like this one.

Plotting a New Course The Seastreak Whaling City Express is now providing seasonal passenger ferry service between New Bedford and Nantucket, delivering passengers to their destination in under two hours.

James Barker, Seastreak President, said he is delighted with the New Bedford-Nantucket ferry connection. “It is an indication of our continuing growth in the level of service we provide and a renewal of the historical relationship that exists between the island of Nantucket and the Whaling City. Our passengers can avoid the stress of sitting in Cape traffic, and Cape roads are relieved of traffic congestion during the summer months.”

John Silvia, Seastreak GM, added “We are pleased with the Steamship Authority’s decision to allow the expanded service. The schedule allows travel round-trip in one day... There are special island resident, senior, and child fares available, and customers can book reservations directly on the Seastreak website.”

The new route offers two weekday trips Monday-Thursday and three weekend trips Friday-Sunday, and will operate through September 6.

Sipping & Sailing: A Beginner’s Guide

by Jenny Benzie Advanced Sommelier + Certified Wine Educator, Proprietress of Épernay Wine & Spirits While there is a comprehensive (and somewhat exhausting) list of technical tasting terms that can be used to describe wines, these can be overwhelming to a beginner who just wants to enjoy the social aspects of sipping wine and rubbing elbows on the mega yacht docked at the waterfront. If you are just learning how to properly taste wine and describe what you are tasting with others, this quick reference guide of beginner wine terms will provide a helpful overview of words that make it simple to use the accepted language (even if you have had a few sips already). With the Figawi race over to Nantucket this Memorial Day Weekend, we thought it fun to compare some basic sailing terms to your wine drinking vocabulary.

To start, think of your palate (as in your appreciation for taste and flavor) as a sailing vessel that is charting the great big wine ocean. There are certain areas on your tongue that pick up different sensory components and therefore affect what you taste in a wine.

The aft (also sometimes referred to as the stern) is the back of a ship or, in wine tasting terms, the back of the palate. This is the area furthest back on your tongue and is responsible for detecting bitterness in wine. This bitterness is described as a sharpness of taste while lacking any sweetness.

The bow, as the front of the ship is referred to, would be the tip of your tongue. This is important to give yourself a starting point in order to compare and contrast the level of sweetness (versus being semi-sweet, dry, or anywhere in between) that is apparent in the wine.

While port is to the left of the bow and starboard is to the right in boating terms, the left and right side of the palate are able to both detect the same sensory components in regards to wine tasting descriptors. Starting from the continued on page 20

that a man had the right to go where ever he wanted and spend his own money when his work was done.

Perhaps their insolence could be chalked up to the island’s ignorance in the ways of the military.

Nantucket was exempted from sending soldiers to fight in the American Revolution and the War of 1812 because of its deep Quaker roots: a cornerstone of that faith is a commitment to pacifism. But by 1860 Quakers no longer dominated the island’s social fabric and Nantucket contributed 57 more men to the war than was required by the government.

Once they began to fight, Nantucketers distinguished themselves on land and at sea with bravery and competence.

Nantucket men fought in every major battle of the war, some served under famous Civil War leaders like General William T. Civil War veteran’s headstone at the Sherman and Prospect Hill cemetery with a G.A.R. Admiral David medallion and American flag.

Farragut, and there were more officers from Nantucket than from any other Massachusetts town of a similar size.

By the time the war ended in 1865, 73 island men had perished and the survivors came home to rebuild their island lives. The following year the Grand Army of The Republic formed in Illinois. The G.A.R., as it became known, was a fraternal organization whose members included those who fought in the Union Army and Navy, the Marines and Revenue Cutter Service. Nantucket veterans created what would be called the Thomas M. Gardner Post #207 in 1866. (It was originally called Post #2 and changed its name in 1892).

Nationally the G.A.R. was one of the first organized political advocacy groups. It supported the Republican Party platform and favored voting rights for black veterans, promoted patriotic education, and lobbied Congress to establish veterans' pensions. In May of 1868 the first G.A.R. Commander-in-Chief, General John A. Logan, declared that May 30 would be called Memorial Day. His order established a Memorial Day observance that island veterans continue to this day that pays tribute to all war casualties, missing-in-action, and deceased veterans.

On Nantucket, the local post fell in line with national policy and the group organized the island’s first Memorial Day observance on May 30, 1868. The island’s Civil War veterans and townspeople gathered at the Methodist Church for a service where Arthur E. Jenks was the main speaker. One month later a group gathered at Atlantic Hall to discuss putting up a Civil War Monument. Eventually the group raised more than $30,000, and in 1874 they installed a stone obelisk on Main Street listing the names of the Nantucket men lost in the Civil War. Today the Memorial Day ceremony is a parade through town that stops at continued on page 13

Membership in the G.A.R. peaked in the 1890, when the organization had hundreds of posts and almost a half million members. But with each veteran’s passing, the G.A.R.’s numbers and political clout waned. James H. Wood, Sr., the last living Nantucket Civil War veteran, died in 1943, two days before his 97th birthday. Before his death he passed command of the Nantucket post to Herbert Smith, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War I. Nationally, the G.A.R. dissolved in 1956 after the death of the last Civil War veteran, Albert Woolson.

Smith served Nantucket for 31 years and retired in 1961. Since then local members of Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, organized in 1899 by Spanish-American War veterans, and the American Legion, created by Congress just after World War I in 1919, have continued the Memorial Day customs started by the G.A.R. 150 years ago.

Bookends at the Book Festival The 5th annual Nantucket Book Festival, held this year from June 17 to 19, is offering a new “Bookends Package” featuring an opening night Authors Dinner with a cocktail hour, buffet, and what promises to be stimulating conversation, in a ticket that includes a closing morning Breakfast with U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins, whose last three collections have broken sales records for poetry.

Both events are being hosted at the harborside Brant Point Grill in The White Elephant. Tickets are still available at NantucketBookFestival.org for these and other special Book Fest events.

Most of the more than three dozen author talks Diane Rehm and festival activities are free, and, at press time, seven of the ticketed events were not yet sold out.

The fun begins at 8:30 am on Friday, June 17 and continues morning, afternoon, and evening throughout the weekend. The Opening Night Celebration at 7pm on June 17, will feature Billy Collins and Diane Rehm discussing the power of literature to offer hope, understanding, and courage during difficult times. Held in the Unitarian Meeting House on Orange Street, this event is free, but space is limited.

At 6 pm on Sunday, June 19, the 2016 Festival will end with authors Marlon James, Diane Ackerman, and Nathaniel Philbrick discussing the process of transforming books to film. This ticketed event will be held in the Nantucket Whaling Museum and followed by a wine reception.

On Saturday, August 13, Loggins will join conductor Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra for a night of music, dancing, and fabulous fireworks on Jetties Beach.

Loggins follows previous special musical guests for the Boston Pops on Nantucket concert including last year’s act, The Australian Bee Gees, as well as former special guests Matthew Morrison, Michael Cavanaugh, Carly Simon, Linda Eder, Joel Grey, and the late Natalie Cole.

During the 1970s, Loggins was one half of the prolific recording and touring duo Loggins and Messina before he embarked on a solo career that included platinum albums and smash hits on the soundtracks for the classic 1980s movies Caddyshack, Footloose, and Top Gun. This year’s 20th anniversary concert is being spearheaded by event chairs Craig and Frances Lindner, seasonal residents of the island and friends of Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

“The Boston Pops on Nantucket is always a special night for the island community that brings everyone together for an important cause—our hospital,” said Craig Lindner. “Frances and I are honored to serve as chairs of the 20th anniversary edition of this great Nantucket summer tradition.”

The annual concert is the largest single fundraiser for Nantucket Cottage Hospital that brings thousands of people from all walks of life together at Jetties Beach for an unforgettable night of entertainment. All funds generated during the event stay on Nantucket to sustain the hospital’s year-round commitment to the health and wellbeing of the island community.

Layer the veggies on a bottom of a large baking dish, season lightly.

Season the cod with salt and pepper then place on top of the veggies with single layer of cod fillets, and pour the red pepper sauce over the cod and the veggies.

Bake uncovered at 350F for 30-40 minutes until the fish is flaky and veggies are tender. Serve garnished with fresh chopped parsley.

LEMON BUTTER BAKED COD 2 lb cod 1/2 c butter 2 TBSP lemon juice 1/4 c all purpose flour pinch of paprika salt and pepper to taste Cut fillets into about 8oz pieces (about 4 pieces) and pat dry with paper towel.

In another dish, mix together flour, salt and pepper.

Melt butter in a sauce pan or microwave, remove from heat and add lemon juice to butter.

Dip the codfish into the lemon butter, taking care to coat it well on all sides. Then dip the buttered fish into the flour mixâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;again taking care to coat all sides. Dusting off any extra.

Place coated fillets in an ungreased baking dish. drizzle remaining butter mix over fillets. Sprinkle entire dish with paprika. Bake, Uncovered at 350 for 25-30 minutes. fish should flake easily with a fork.

CRISPY OVEN-FRIED FISH BITES

TARTAR SAUCE

Fish 2 TBSP canola oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp creole seasoning 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 cup milk 1 egg 1 cup panko bread crumbs 1 lbs cod, cut into bite- sized pieces lemon wedge for garnish Tartar Sauce 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 TBSP capers, drained 1 TBSP minced yellow onion 2 TBSP sweet pickle relish 2 TBSP minced dill pickle 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 TBSP chopped fresh parsley For the fish...

Preheat your oven to 450F. Pour the oil into a baking sheet and tilt it to spread the oil evenly. Place the baking sheet in the oven as it preheats.

Line up three separate shallow bowls. In one bowl, add the flour, creole seasoning, garlic powder, and a dash of salt and pepper. In the second bowl, whisk together the milk and the egg. In the third bowl place the panko bread crumbs.

Dredge each piece of fish in the flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally roll each in the bread crumbs, coating the fish compleatly at each stage.

Place the dredged fish on the preheated baking sheet. Spray the fish generously with non-stick canola oil spray.

Bake the fish for 15-20 minutes, flipping them once midway through, or until they are brown and crispy on both sides, remove from heat and serve immediately.

For the tartar sauce...

Combine all ingredients together in a bowl. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving with the fish.

front and working your way to the back on both sides of the tongue, you will detect salty components, such as saline or brininess) followed by any sour notes present that would affect the perception of acidity in the wine.

These sensory components are discussed on a definitive grading scale, similar to low, medium, high, and avoid using words such as good or bad in your descriptors. Using the term ‘good’ or just saying you don’t like a wine doesn’t allow the person you are discussing the wine with to fully understand how you are describing the wine in a quantitative analysis.

By being able to better assess these four components and knowing the direction of where they are on the tongue, you will also be able to adequately discuss the aftertaste of a wine. The term is as simple as the taste that remains on the palate after taking a few sips of wine.

The sometimes-called “fifth sense” of your wine deciphering is termed umami. Umami is most often described as a pleasant savory taste and is the one term that is not quite as definitive as the others. It basically translates into “delicious.” While this is not as quantitative as the other sensory terms, it is more commonly agreed upon as a term that means it is delightful and highly pleasant to the taste.

Tacking, a basic sailing maneuver that refers to turning the bow of the boat through the wind so that it changes from one side to the other of a sail, is almost the lifeblood when it comes to tasting wine. This would be the act of swirling the wine around in your glass so that you enable the aromas and bouquet of the wine to escape and float into the air. You will quickly learn next how this ultimately affects what you taste in the wine.

Your smelling apparatus, also known as your nose, is going to be your rudder. The purpose of the rudder is to steer the ship, which is exactly what your olfactory senses do. When you eat and drink, typically the first thing you do is to take a few whiffs of the aromas released from foods and beverages. This provides your palate with some anticipation of whatever flavors you may soon be tasting. You can briefly wave the rim of your glass under your nose or use a moderate sniffing technique of inhaling several breathes over a short period of time. A handful of wine tasters prefer to really get their nozzle into the wine glass and take one big sniff (without inhaling the wine itself, of course).

Where the wine lands on your palate is a direct correlation of how the wine gets into your mouth. The boom of wine drinking is considered to be the wine glass you choose to use while imbibing. If the glass happens to be thicker with a rounded lip on the top edge, then the wine will roll out of the glass and launch into your mouth just a like a snowboarder taking a jump over a mogul and not necessarily making a graceful landing—it can end up to be aggressive, chunky, and unpleasant. A thinner, more fine in texture type of glass would allow the wine to smoothly roll right out of the bowl and splash delicately onto your mid-palate. This enables the wine to gently land on a larger surface area without attacking just one of your senses.

While it may be a challenge to get invited onto the boat in the first place, mastering these simple wine (and boating) terms and being able to use them will help ensure you are invited to board again. And bringing aboard a bottle of Rosé Wine, Nantucket’s favorite drink of summer, will help to impress your nautical hosts even more.

New Author Series The Dreamland Film & Performing Arts Center is hosting Page to Stage, An Author Series this season to give Nantucket authors a new platform to discuss new work, read select passages, and have a brief Q & A with the audience.

The first in the series will be held at 5 pm this Tuesday, May 31, and features John Shea interviewing John Breglio. Breglio has spent nearly 40 years working in all sectors of the entertainment industry, including theatre, motion pictures, publishing and music. As New York’s pre-eminent entertainment lawyer with an international law firm, he was instrumental in assisting his clients to produce and finance plays, musicals, and films. In 2008, Breglio retired from his law practice and since then has been producing plays, musicals and films independently. Shea will discuss with Breglio his newly published book I Wanna Be a Producer: How to Make a Killing on Broadway... or Get Killed.

The book takes readers on a behind-the-scenes journey and is filled with hows and wherefores, dos and don’ts of producing on Broadway.

The five other authors participating in the series are Nancy Thayer (June 29), Nathaniel Philbrick (July 21), Elin Hilderbrand (August 2), Rob Cocuzzo (September 1), and Wendy Rouillard (October 9). Each of them (with the exception of Wendy Rouillard) will be interviewed on stage in the main theater by well-known Nantucketers, including Natalie Jacobson, John Shea and Charley Walters. Following the author presentation, Mitchell’s Book Corner will sell books by the presenting author in the Dreamland lobby. The authors will be available to sign their books.

For the younger crowd, Wendy Rouillard, author of the children’s “Barnaby” series, will present a birthday party for Barnaby over Columbus Day weekend, including a Barnaby reading, activities, decorating cupcakes, and, of course, a Barnaby appearance. Each guest will receive a gift bag. There will be two presentations on Saturday, October 9.

"Nantucket has so many terrific authors and we’re thrilled to incorporate this series into our programming at the Dreamland to learn about their newest work," said the Dreamland’s Executive Director Joe Hale. "Even better, all of the proceeds from the Author Series will benefit our year-round Children’s Theater Education Programming.”

Head for the 19th Hole You don’t have to make it to the 18th hole to enjoy the 19th at the island’s Miacomet Golf Club. Tucked away off a residential road a mere three miles from downtown Nantucket, Miacomet is the island’s only public 18-hole golf course, and its club restaurant is open to all, whether you hit the links or would rather sip a cocktail by the greens.

Service at The Restaurant at Miacomet is fast and professional, and from the time guests are greeted and seated till the last plate is cleared, staff is warm and friendly. Golfers often come in straight from the course, so dress is casual and the chatter around the bar in “Henderson’s Hideaway” is usually about the latest tournament, local or international.

New to the kitchen at Miacomet, but not new to island kitchens is Chef Karen Michele Thureson. American style cuisine with hearty plates and lighter options, and she is revitalizing the menu choices with seasonal selections and summer flavors.

We had a sampling of these changes at our dinner last week, and we loved Thureson’s new dishes. Even the Miacomet classics we ordered had a freshness and heightened flavor that makes us excited to see what else this talented chef has planned.

The four salads on the menu are served in half and whole portions, and can become entrees with the addition of shrimp, burger, chicken, salmon, calamari, swordfish, or fried clams. The Beet Salad is a plateful of fresh mixed greens tossed in a lemon-thyme vinaigrette that coats the lettuces with bright flavor. Cubes of tender, sweet red beets are clustered in each corner of the plate, and goat cheese crumbles add a creamy tang. (Suggested wine pairing: Mark West Chardonnay) The Beet Salad was very good, but the vivid and vinegary toss of tastes and textures they call the Miacomet Salad was our favorite. Mixed greens, in a balsamic vinaigrette with crisp julienne carrot, sweet dried cranberries, crunchy slivers of almonds, and tangy gorgonzola is just fun eat! Each bite has a little something new. (Suggested wine pairing: Barton & Gustier Rosé) Ipswich Fried Clams have long been a patron favorite at Miacomet, whether you order them at lunch in a classic Clam Roll or as an appetizer at dinner. The way Chef Thureson prepares them reminds us of why these tasty morsels have become so widely adored! They arrive piping hot, fresh out of the fryer, the coating so crisp that it shatters between your teeth; the clams inside clean-tasting, tenFamous Bloody Mary der, and succulent. (Suggested pairing: Cisco's Whales Tail Ale) The Mussels, too, were so good that we could have asked for a double order and been perfectly happy feasting only on these. Small but plump, the mussels are brought to table in a wide shallow bowl arranged like a flower blossom: each glossy shell wide open to reveal a glistening orange morsel.

And the deeply flavorful coconut-harrissa broth with sparks of heat left us purring with delight! After we devoured the mussels and dipped and ate all the grilled bread, we were tempted to lift the bowl to our lips to drink the rest.

opted to order four of the new entrees introduced last week. Chef Thureson told us that she loves “to grill, roast and braise. There are so many different ways to cook so many different cuts of meat ... and so many different flavor profiles you can use.” Her enthusiasm turned into delicious dinners with her new preparations of pork and of beef on the Early Summer Menu.

Served with beautiful grill markings, the Ribeye Steak is tender and beefy. A delectable char along the edge crisps the luscious fat of the ribeye into something sinfully delicious. Chimichurri butter melts over the top of the hot steak and anoints the grilled cauliflower and salty golden brown fingerling potatoes served alongside. (Suggested wine pairing: Justin Cabernet Sauvignon) Every time we’ve eaten at this restaurant, a Pork Chop has been on the menu, but never one quite like this! The chop is grilled for a summery, smoky flavor and painted with a superb, slightly sweet marinade of whole grain mustard (one ingredient this chef would never be without), pomegranate, and m a p l e .

Baby carrots, roasted till they are spectacularly sweet nearly stole the show, and mashed potatoes flaPork Chop vored with bits of charred scallions were just the thing for mopping up every drop of the marinade-infused jus. (Suggested wine pairing: Frances Ford Coppola Claret) She may love to cook meats, but this chef is every bit as skilled with seafood. Her Fresh Atlantic Salmon arrived expertly cooked: exterior crusted with a slight smoky char, the inside cooked through (but only just)

Cherry tomatoes, blistered till they burst with sweetness and stirred with lemon relish and herb oil, are served overtop the fish, and underneath is a tasty, gluten-free cauliflower risotto with spinach and sundried tomato, made even better by stirring in the arugula pesto that adorns the plate. (Suggested wine pairing: Louis Latour Chardonnay) It takes a talented chef to cook Swordfish the way Chef Thureson does: moist and meaty, cooked through but not dried out.

She serves it Piccata style—a wonderful choice for a hearty fish that can hold its own with tangy lemon and briney capers.

(Suggested wine pairing: Jed Steele Pinot Noir) The Classic Creme Brulee makes an ideal ending to a summer meal: satiny custard topped with perfectly caramelized crust. Their Dutch Apple Crumble, served warm with vanilla ice cream melting down over the soft cinnamon-scented apples and the crunchy topping is a homestyle favorite.

But if you like chocolate, then you’ll want to order either their Chocolate Lava Cake with the rich, hot, molten center or their famous Wasted Brownie, drenched in bourbon, topped with vanilla ice cream and housemade chocolate sauce, and only served to guests 21 and older.

Expert barkeeps at The Restaurant at Miacomet prepare a Salted Caramel Martini if you prefer to drink your dessert, or you can share a half bottle Saracco Asti Muscato from their nicely curated selection of wines.

A Gift from the Admiral English Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin visited Nantucket just once, in 1826, but his visit led to the creation of a school that educated generations of Nantucket children. To mark the 190th anniversary of the admiral’s trip, the NHA invites visitors to explore The Coffin School through rarely-seen artifacts from a century and a half of student “The achievement.

Coffin School: A Gift of Education,” is the 2016 Mezzanine Gallery exhibit in the Nantucket Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street.

“Before I began planning for this exhibition, I hadn’t fully realized the importance of what today seems like a sleepy little building on Winter Street,” says Sarah Helm, NHA Special Collections Librarian. “By researching, writing, and exploring the NHA’s collections associated with the Coffin School, I’ve come to realize how this building symbolizes more than a beautiful example of Greek-revival-style architecture, but also shares a rich history associated with the beginning of formal education on Nantucket.”

The Coffin School is a unique memorial to one of Nantucket’s founding families. Admiral Coffin, a British hero of the Revolutionary War, funded the creation of the school in 1827 to honor his ancestors’ role in island history by providing “a good English education to the youth

who are descendants of the late Tristram Coffin.” At the time the Coffin School was founded 189 years ago, more than three hundred Nantucket children lacked the benefit of formal education.

In 1854, the school moved from Fair Street to a new brick building on Winter Street, and beginning in 1903, the school offered manual-training courses to students.

By 1941, the school was fully integrated with Nantucket’s public school system, and classes continued there until 1968.

Throughout the late twentieth century, the building also served island nonprofit organizations as a venue for lectures, classes, and musical events. The Coffin School Trustees, some descended from the original trustees or from former students, continue to own the building and advance their educational mission by providing grants and scholarships to island youth and supporting youthoriented programs.

Some artifacts in this exhibit include a striking portrait of the admiral painted by Gilbert Stuart; the journal of Henry Clapp Jr., written aboard the school’s early American training ship, and student work that includes a lightship basket and a sewing-sample book.

“It is fascinating to think of the journal Henry Clapp Jr. kept on board the brig Clio and what an adventure going to school must have been during this time,” says Helm. “What an amazing hands-on opportunity it was for those children from a small island off the coast of Massachusetts to set sail for the southern coast of Brazil!”

The Coffin School: A Gift of Education will be on view in the NHA’s Mezzanine Gallery on the second floor of the Whaling Museum through November 20, 2016 during museum hours and is included with museum admission.
