The Magical Realism of Katherine Howe

Every June, the Nantucket Book Festival brings together readers and authors in a celebration of the written word. Over the years, this weekend event has welcomed to our island hundreds of well-known authors including Alice Hoffman, Dennis Lehane, Tiya Miles, Marlon James, Jodi Picoult, Sebastian Junger, Imani Perry, Hernan Diaz, Jennifer Weiner, Charles Graeber, Isabel Wilkerson, James McBride, Alex Marzano-Lesnevich, and Azar Nafisi. The Book Fest also showcases Nantucket writers: Nathaniel Philbrick, Elin Hilderbrand, James Sulzer, Nancy Thayer, Steve Sheppard, and Gabrielle Burnham have made appearances. Kwame Alexander, Margaret Atwood, Erik Larson are among the more than 20 authors who will speak at the 2024 Festival held this Thursday through Sunday.

Book Festival presenting authors have written fiction and nonfiction; they’ve won the Pulitzer, the PEN/Faulkner, and other national book awards. Some have written multiple New York Times Best Sellers, and a few have written a single, notable book (so far). Each has been willing to share their stories, their challenges, and their successes during the many free talks and forums. Some even offer guidance to aspiring writers attending the Nantucket Book Festival.

Among the presenting authors for the 2024 Book Festival is Katherine Howe, an award-winning historian and novelist with ten books to her name, four of them New York Times Best Sellers.

Howe lives on the North Shore in Marblehead, and she’s visited Nantucket many times, often as a sailor and recently during the 2024 FIGAWI race in May. She’s a scholar and a teacher as well as a published author and is working this summer to finish her doctorate. She has loved writing from a very young age “I’d always written as a child: it was how I made sense of the world, but it never occurred to me that I could do it professionally,” Howe explained.

You’ll Need a Bookcase

I can’t buy a decent bookcase. If I want, I can get one on Wayfair or from Ikea that looks like a bookcase, but the shelves won’t hold anything heavier than a take out meal. I can find one created by a craftsman made of walnut and sturdy enough to hold the Harvard Library in leatherbond, but the bill is roughly what you would pay for a used Toyota. And it won’t buy the groceries.

Bookcases are rare because book buyers have become rare. Nobody belongs to a book club. The nation’s doorsteps do not shake, once a month, with another Michener or Vidal tome. We don’t stop by the local bookstore because Borders blackholed them into a corporate orbit around The Gap and the Cheesecake Factory. Then, as black holes do, Borders disappeared into itself and left a Spirit of Halloween Store in the cavity. Amazon once sent out books: now it delivers candy, videos, and Whole Foods ready-made vegan meatloaf...

At this point, a large number of books are bought so that they can be backgrounds for the Zoom quarterly sales meetings. We sit in front of fifty dollars of used books, aligned in a careful scatterplot while Justin and Becky show the quarterly sales projections for the southern markets as we nod our heads in attentive boredom.

Our digital overlords have squeezed the reading time out of our lives with flashing lights. Our eyes fill with Madden Football, Candycrush, or Bridgerton. They silt our minds with handful after handful of popcorn until we sit in the dark and wonder why our mouths are so dry and our heads are so sore. The dopamine keeps us munching, flash to flash, cut to cut,

Stand by Me

There’s a scene at the start of the fantastic 1986 movie “Stand By Me” where Richard Dreyfuss is sitting in his car, trying to come to terms with the death of one of his childhood buddies. As this character looks up from the newspaper article that had delivered the bad news, he sees two kids who look about thirteen pedaling by on their bikes. We see the Dreyfuss character immediately taken back in time, back to that age, back with his neighborhood gang. It’s a poignant moment that starts this brilliant coming-of-age movie (based on the Stephen King novella The Body).

I got to feel a similar jolt to my past recently. It started with a call from Tammy King: “Hey Cuz—there’s these kids I just ran into at the tackle shop. They all ride their bikes to the beach with their fishing gear, and they’re awesome!” Tammy told me that the kids looked to be about 13 years old. She was completely smitten by their enthusiasm. Based on Tammy’s enthusiasm, I figured that I’d have to find out more about these mystery kids at some point.

The image of kids who want to fish that badly activated my flashback mode to our Hooper Farm Road crew when I was that age. Saturdays in the spring and early summer were dedicated to pond fishing, after cereal, cartoons, the Three Stooges, and professional wrestling, of course. Those days spent fishing Miacomet Pond with my neighborhood buddies were some of the greatest days of my life.

A day or so later I received this text from my brother Bill: “Hey Steve, there’s five kids fishing out here at Point O’ Breakers. They’re local kids, and they’re out here all the time having a blast. I got their names for you. I handed out a few metal lures to them. They loved it!” I asked Bill if all of the kids had fishing gear. “Yes: they have tackle, fishing rods, and short attention spans. They’re having a good time. They’re like the kids from “The Goonies!” All right, destiny, I can take a hint. It was time to track these kids down.

I decided to utilize a tried-and-true detective technique: I put it out on Facebook. I typed a quick post to say that I was trying to identify and locate a great crew of kids who bike out to the beaches with their fishing gear. I added the first names and last initials of the five that brother Bill had provided. I had a reply in minutes—

Ticks on the Hunt

I first encountered Lone Star ticks on Tuckernuck Island in 2015. I had one adult female hitchhike back to Nantucket on me, and I reported it to Tick Report. At the time, it was only the second report from Nantucket, with many more known from Tuckernuck Island. Of course, birds fly easily from one island to another, and deer swim. It was just a matter of time before Nantucket and all of its available habitat became the next place for Lone Star ticks to populate.

Since then, lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) have become established and even dominant in parts of Nantucket. This started in the western end, and they are now found across the island, all the way to the eastern end.

So why are there lone star ticks now and why are they getting worse? The lone star tick is one example of a range-expanding species responding to climate change. Their distribution has been expanding from south-eastern, south-central, and mid-Atlantic states, with warming climate making larger swaths of the northern U.S. more hospitable to lone star ticks.

Or are they? Some experts believe that lone star ticks were prevalent in parts of the northeastern U.S. during the 1700s and that they now they are reclaiming that habitat. Centuries ago, primary forest habitat and deer populations were at their peak and so were the ticks, as we know from written descriptions and collections of the period. The 1800s brought expanded colonization, which resulted in significant forest cutting and hunting pressure on deer populations, leading to decreases in tick populations. Now, with forests recovering from decades of logging, white-tailed deer populations have rebounded, and winters are getting warmer due to climate change. It’s a perfect storm for the ticks to be taking over. This combination could mean continued expansion of lone star ticks, which are now established from Florida to Maine and as far west as Nebraska.

Regardless of why they’re here, they are here. So what do we need to look out for?

Lone star ticks are notable (and named) for the distinctive white dot on their reddish-brown bodies, which is only found on adult females. The adult males have white dots or streaks on the outer edges of their bodies. Nymphs are smaller and distinguished by reddish-brown bodies and fast speed. Yes, they will “run” up your clothes upon contact.

Lone star ticks are known to be more aggressive than deer and dog ticks: they actively “hunt” down a host instead of passively hoping one walks by since they are attracted to carbon dioxide (basically, us breathing out).

With a job working outdoors in the field and off-trail conducting research, I have a high exposure rate to ticks. Tromping around the grasses, shrubs, swamps, and other unmanaged habitats of Nantucket put me, and others in the same profession, at a higher risk of exposure. I thought I would share some of what we do to minimize tick bites.

The first and best line of defense is prevention. Keeping trails mowed and staying on paths is a good first step. We wear closed-toed shoes and long pants at all times. However, staying on mowed trails isn’t always possible when conducting research or looking for rare species. For work, I treat my field pants (the ones I wear out in the brush every day) with permethrin. I know that choice isn’t for everyone, but it is one I am personally comfortable with. I spray the outside of my field clothes with permethrin while I am not wearing them and let them dry in the sun. Supposedly, the permethrin will be effective for more than 40 washes. I generally reapply mid-summer.

Permethrin is a pesticide that is chemically similar to extracts of the flowering chrysanthemum plant. It acts on insects by over-stimulating their nervous

In the talented hands of TWN’s Producing Artistic Director Justin Cerne, Sense and Sensibility does not disappoint! From the surprise dropped in the opening scene, under Cerne’s direction, this is a fast-paced, dynamic, high-quality production. He deftly handles the quick changes and controlled chaos of the play, never losing the audience in the bedlam.

The brilliant cast fully delivers on the humor, drama, and romance as the play explores themes of family, friendship, and the balance between sense and sensibility. Actors Erica Knight and Chelsie Sutherland, as loving opposites Elinor and Marianne, carry the show, expressing sibling tension amid the stresses of society with empathy and energy. Michael Judson Berry is entertaining in the comedic role of the endlessly anxious and awkward Edward Ferras. Audiences will love to hate Katherine Schaber’s shamlessly scheming Fanny, even as she cuts off the Dashwoods, and Nicole LeBlanc is only slightly more sympathetic as the manipulative social climber who comes between Elinor and Edward.

No strangers to the Nantucket stage, Pam Murphy and Peter Sendelbach are hilarious as Mrs. Jennings and Sir John Middleton, with perfect timing and depth beyond the comedy. Casey Sayre Boukus is expressive and effective as the overbred Lady Middleton, and her costume design firmly sets the play in the Regency Era, while conveying details about each character.

Half-dozen or so of the 15 actors are double-cast as “Gossips,” delivering additional comic relief as they guide the audience through the plot.

Anyone familiar with Jane Austen’s novel knows her landscapes and varied settings, from the English countryside to London, estates to cottages, sitting rooms and dining rooms. Jeffrey Petersen succeed in expressing it all with just a single intricate set design that includes impressive floor to ceiling craftsmanship in painting, carpentry, and textiles to recreate the feel of the Regency Era.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket has delivered yet another sensational show to open the 2024 season. Their production of Kate Hamill's adaptation engages modern audiences while staying true to Austen's timeless tale—it’s sure to please both Austen buffs and those new to her novels.

Another great way to get around the island is by using the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority’s (NRTA) Wave Bus. The Greenhound Station in town has routes servicing Sconset, Madaket, Miacomet, Mid Island, the Airport, Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach. Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. systems, leading to paralysis, and it’s an extremely effective insecticide against a wide variety of pests, including ticks. That means it’s also effective against other insects, including pollinators like butterflies and bees, so I don’t recommend spraying it broadly or spraying your yard.

It’s important to check periodically throughout the day for ticks and pull them off clothing right away. For tiny ticks—the nymphs—I recommend a heavyduty lint roller. Amazon sells some that are “extra sticky” to assist with pet hair. Duct tape also works.

The real question everyone asks is: what do I do once I’ve been bitten by a tick? I will preface this by saying you should, of course, consult a medical professional. I can tell you that my advice has changed with the presence of lone star ticks.

If you find blacklegged ticks (formerly known as deer ticks) biting you, you must to get their entire body off/out of you ASAP. If the tick was on you for less than 24 hours, generally you should be fine. You may have to treat the bite site for itch and irritation, but theres’s a low risk of other infections. However, if you think the tick has been attached longer than 48 hours, you should be tested for tick-borne illnesses and start antibiotic treatment if necessary. In that slim window between 24- and 48-hours, you can sometimes treat with a prophylactic dose of antibiotics to ensure the infection doesn’t spread. But, again, consult your doctor. The staff at the urgent care clinic at our hospital are experienced in treating tick bites.

Lone star ticks are different. Unlike other ticks, their long mandibles mean that their bites can feel like a little sting. Like other ticks, they go for moisture, so they bite in places like armpits, back of the knees, and other nether-regions. The difference in a lone star tick bite is that they can bite and keep going. They don’t always burrow in. That’s great because they don’t stay, but it also means one tick can bite multiple times. And they are itchy! It may be my personal reaction, but lone star tick bites itch a lot and for a long time (up to two weeks!). I treat them like I treat poison ivy rash or other bites: with cortisone cream or Benadryl.

The good news about lone star ticks is that, overall, they have a much lower infection rate for tick-borne diseases. According to our state website, “Lone star continued on page 17

ticks are not a significant source of human illness in Massachusetts at this time but are capable of spreading tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI),” however, the prevalence of these infections is much lower.

The other aspect of lone star ticks that sends a shiver of fear through my meat-loving husband is that these ticks can cause Alpha-gal syndrome. Alpha-gal syndrome (or AGS) is what is commonly called the “meat allergy.” Getting bitten by a lone star tick doesn’t always make you allergic to meat. Everyone reacts differently: it’s caused by a combination of genetics, how many bites you get, how long the tick remains. Alpha-gal stands for galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, a sugar that’s found in red meat, including pork and beef, as well as certain animal products, such as milk and gelatin. It’s also found in the saliva of lone star ticks. When some people are bitten by the lone star tick, their immune system reacts to the alpha-gal, and the next time they eat red meat, their antibodies produced in response to the tick bite go overboard and cause a hyperactive immune response, similar to how a person allergic to bees responds to a bee sting.

This is a new and emerging issue and, as such, it’s a new area of research. AGS was only formally recognized in the medical community in 2009. According to a Center for Disease Control (CDC) report, between 2010 and 2022, more than 110,000 suspected cases of AGS were identified. However, cases of AGS are not nationally notifiable to CDC, so the actual number of AGS cases in the United States is likely underestimated. More data and research are needed. There is little known about how the tick bite causes AGS or

why certain people develop it.

AGS has to be diagnosed by a health-care professional. As with many allergies, the actual severity of the allergy is individualized. People who suffer from AGS may experience a wide range of symptoms, including hives or itchy rash; nausea or vomiting; heartburn or indigestion; diarrhea; cough; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, or eye lids; dizziness or faintness; or severe stomach pain. Symptoms commonly appear 26 hours after eating food or other exposure to products containing alpha-gal.

The people I know on Nantucket who have the alpha-gal syndrome have described experiencing severe gastric distress after eating meat, swollen lips and mouth, and/or rashes. None has gone into anaphylactic shock, but all have changed their diets to stop eating red meat. Some people can still have dairy, while others find they have a reaction to it. The important thing to remember if you think you have these symptoms is to check with your health care professional.

One piece of good news is that, for some people, the alpha-gal syndrome can lessen and even disappear over time.

It looks like we’ll be living with lone star ticks for the foreseeable future. Knowing the risks and taking steps towards prevention is the key. We can all still get outside and enjoy nature!

breathing or glowing. Very few jobs end at five in the afternoon: most ask you to finish the daily reports at home, create a slide deck for the next meeting, or start your next shift at the bar. In our American Odyssey of Productivity and Investment Returns, management finds a way to give you a computer so you can take the boss and the office home with you, set it on the kitchen table, and watch it consume your own private time in a glowing blue fire.

Reading is counter cultural as is Nantucket. Reading asks you to step away from the flashing and beeping to settle into a place where the pages turn, the waves roll in, and the fog silences. On-island, the finest luxury is time, and it is in that time that people retire to the Shire, Winterfell, and the Overlook Hotel for some time away from touchscreens, trackpads, and TPS reports.

The island has two bookstores and 100 miles of beach. Most of the books sold on Main or Broad Street get dropped, sooner or later, at one of the beaches. Surfside and Cisco are poisonous to the twenty-first century. Cell phones lose their reception, fill their holes with sand, and get dropped into the Atlantic. The latest from Elin remains just as powerful with a handful of Nantucket’s finest in the spine and a quick dip in the brine.

More seriously, our visitors spend thousands of dollars to escape flashing lights and buzzing alerts. When they sit on their beach chairs before the rolling surf, they have paid good money not to have anything to do but stare at the horizon and listen to the time wash by. All of those books that they meant to read sit up and perk their ears in the beach bag. They left the busyness on the other side of the sound; they finally have time for Nat and for Margaret.

Our digital overlords don’t want us to read. They can’t put a pop-up advertisement inside the pages. They can’t scrape our data and location off the covers. They can’t alert us of the latest sale at Pottery Barn, nor can they beg for our votes and for our cash. The dopamine itch for likes on Instagram fades in the sunburn. Instead, in the face of eighteenth-century printing technology, they fall deaf and silent.

Time is the birthright of our island. We measure it in sunsets, tides, and waves, instead of in buzzing alarm, alerts, and activity circles. Sooner or later, the day will get buried in a fog bank, and you will remain in a room, watching the mildew grow. The books touch your elbow at that point.

There may be nothing more selfish than reading. You shut the world out, with its needs, desires, and expectations. Dinner will wait until you finish another chapter. Further, you can’t really explain what you read. The incommunicable silence, punctuated by sighs and smiles, exists only in your mind. Nobody else can really understand where you have gone, even if they read the same book tomorrow.

At their best, books are recipes for the meals you cook in your head. They manipulate your feelings, your memories, and your fears into creating a world that you move through, perched on the shoulder of a character. Your husband or your daughter can read the same book just as they can make the same recipe. But their meal is not quite yours. The two of you have made your own chocolate cheesecake, but they are not the same. You each bring slightly different ingredients.

In contrast, Netflix, Facebook, and TikTok all deliver fast food to your door. The Big Mac that comes off the bicycle or out of the backpack tastes the same, or slightly worse, than the Big Mac everyone else eats. Since they are corporations selling your mind to profit their board members, they don’t want you cooking on your own. They want you paying for their DoorDash Chicken Strips.

One of the best features of the annual Book Festival is when local authors cather at tables are set up for the self-published. These people have made their own recipes, fine tuned them, and wish to bring them to you. They aren’t making money for board members or for corporations. They have a vision they want to share, and they have spent hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours shaping these mental recipes for you. They selected the pictures, picked the typeface, and went over the text, one more time, in search of typos. If you can quit the junk food, you may find something worthwhile in your own kitchen.

But be careful. You will need to get a bookcase.

Featured Restaurant: Dune Choose Your Own Adventure

Those who like to go down a road less traveled should make reservations to dine at Dune, in the heart of downtown Nantucket at 20 Broad Street.

When chef-owner Michael Getter opened Dune in 2009, after working for decades in the Nantucket culinary scene and as a wine pro, word quickly spread about his superb, innovative cuisine featuring fresh seasonal ingredients. Now, 15 years later, Chef Getter and his talented team are still serving some of the best food on Nantucket in preparations that make every meal a fun culinary adventure.

There is a perfect wine pairing for every dish served at Dune, along with bottles that have special appeal. If your tastes run more toward distilled beverages, check in with Tierney Moses, a creative force behind the bar at Dune this season.

Not only does she have years of experience, she is a Level 2 Mezcal Sommelier It may just be the perfect time to try this smoky spirit in a special cocktail. If you are among the growing number of “sober curious,” Tierney has designed four mocktails that you’ll find more intriguing then typical “virgin” cocktails. We’d happily sip her Great Pretender, a refreshing and summery blend of hibiscus-infused agave, lime, and soda. And to accompany a hearty meal (perhaps Dune’s Grilled Pork Tenderloin or their Sirloin), try the Smoke Screen: an uncommon mix of lapsang souchang tea, pineapple, honey, coconut, and lime.

We started our recent meal with a bit of theatre. Our server Cecilia presented a bowl with a generous scoop of jumbo crab meat, lemon gel, basil, and lavender; overtop she slowly poured a vibrant green Spring Pea Bisque. Spoonful after spoonful, the flavors blossomed in the warm, creamy soup. With spring about to turn to summer, you may not have much longer to enjoy Dune’s Spring Pea Bisque, though there is sure to be superb summer season soup to replace it as the menu (and the harvest) changes.

Full of delicate flavors and a variety of textures, the Sunchoke and Fennel Salad is a light way to start a meal. Thin, crisp slices of sunchoke offset the anise flavor of crunchy fennel with their slightly sweet earthiness. Fresh leaves of red endive add a softer crunch. Green olive vinaigrette ties the salad together and adds a briny tang. Whole almonds, juicy slices of orange, and shavings of parmesan are scattered

about, along with chopped green olives. Red-veined beet leaves and blue cornflowers add color to this delicious study in white.

Dune’s Pan-Roasted Jersey Asparagus is a vivid plate of tasty tidbits around thin spears of fresh asparagus, perfectly roasted till tender with a slight char. A little of this and a little of that gives you a chance to customize this appetizer as you wish, mixing and matching creamy feta, fresh herbs, mint, crushed hazelnuts, roasted red peppers, intensely flavored compressed cantaloupe, dabs of tangy lemon curd, and “black olive crumbles” that add surprising pops of salty goodness.

Though we found it impossible to choose a single favorite among Dune’s spectacular starters, we’ve got to give high praise to the (cover photo) House Stracciatella “Toast.” We’re not sure if the word toast is in quotes because the bread is grilled instead of toasted or because the word toast is just too simple for this delectable layering of flavors. On top of the grilled sourdough is a rich and creamy housemade stracciatella cheese. Piled on the cheese is a delicious mix of very fresh spring vegetables and pea greens, with pieces of smoky Calabrian chile that add a bit of heat—really more of a glow. Shards of prosciutto as crisp as chips add just the right amount of salt.

The chefs at Dune give sparkling flavor to a dish that seems seductively simple: their Crudo of East Coast Yellowfin Tuna. The clean taste of sushi-grade tuna is heightened by a bright pink pool of roasted strawberry and yuzu, jalapeno, red onion, and cilantro. The sweet, tart, fruity, citrusy sauce contrasts and enhances the delicate fish. Admire the color, then close your eyes and let the flavors excite your palate.

Another of Getter’s sauces makes magic in the Pan-Roasted Atlantic Cod Loin. In this entrée, it’s a

rich coconut-lemongrass broth that surrounds flaky, moist cod, seared to give it a golden crust. Fried garlic is sprinkled overtop the fish, and served in the broth around the fish are chunks of purple potato, asparagus, green cauliflower, bok choy, and shiitake mushrooms. We briefly considered picking up the bowl to sip the remaining broth.

Pan-Roasted Day Boat Sea Scallops are as luscious as the cod. This is another dish that encourages you to choose your own adventure. Slice one of the perfectly cooked, sweet, translucent scallops to savor alone. Then try another bite of scallop with scoop of parmesan grits and a shaving of truffle… add a maitake mushroom and parsnipleek puree to your next taste. Each approach you choose has a different flavor profile and a new adventure.

The seasoning level is just right: all the flavor of blackening but just a touch of the heat. The salmon is served on a mole that is earthy-sweet and smoky, and it’s topped with a cool, crisp salsa verde. Alongside is a colorful combo of roasted sweet potato, pickled onions, cilantro, and grilled squash.

Carnivores will be captivated by the Prime Sirloin Steak entrée. Grilled to a rosy medium rare (as ordered) with gloriously charred edges, the supremely tender, juicy steak is sliced and fanned out around the plate. A ramp chimichurri that is lighter than the traditional condiment is delicious on the beefy sirloin. Yucca fries, crispy outside and creamy inside, and queso fresco add more South American flair. Vegetarians are not neg-

lected at Dune, where the Vegetarian Tasting is a bountiful feast of fresh garden flavors and bold accompaniments. This well-considered assemblage of six tastings features different flavors, temperatures, and textures. It’s a very satisfying selection sure to make a guest feel special: the components are likely to shift as harvests change. We were served warm and creamy Sweet Potatoes topped with a cool, crisp tomatillo salsa; Greens with steamed bok choy and cauliflower; Fingerlings roasted till golden brown and presented on a robust garlic aioli with fried garlic; a bundle of Grilled Asparagus with pickled onion; Lentil Salad on a sweet carrot puree, topped with shaved radish; and Roasted Carrots charred and sweet with a cool avocado yogurt sauce. This Vegetarian Tasting is so much more than just an after-thought!

The final adventure to choose at Dune is which dessert will be your grand finale. Their Chocolate Pot de Crème is a well-done classic, with chocolate crumbles and peanuts adding crunch to the satiny-smooth delight. Dulcey Macaron is an impressive choice. The macrons have a slight crunch and deliciously chewy texture; alongside are bruléed banana, a scoop of creme brulée ice cream, and a light sponge cake made to look like cotton candy with a bit of culinary magic.

As pretty as it is delicious, the Strawberry-Rhubarb Opera Cake has layer upon layer of moist cake, whipped cream filling, and a sleek rhubarb gel over top. There’s house made ricotta gelato to eat with the cake, or you can choose some fresh strawberries, or candied rhubarb, or pistachios, or a dab of calamansi gel.

For light finish, our choice is the cool, fruity, and refreshing Mango Trifle: mango cremeux, accented with strawberry pearls, toasted coconut, whipped cream, and freshly chopped mango.

work smarter, not harder, right? A friend texted me to say that one of the youths (or yutes, to borrow from “My Cousin Vinny”) was the son of his buddy. I was off and running.

This friend was Cameron Mooney, father of Weylin. Cameron told me that Weylin has been crazy about fishing for years now. I recalled that I had seen Weylin and one of his buddies at the North Head of the Hummock one cold afternoon. The two kids were having an absolute blast. One of my friends said, “Yeah, that’s Cam Mooney’s son.” Ok then! Cameron told me that the boys were actually heading back to Point O’Breakers that afternoon. Destiny was putting the pieces together pretty quickly. I tossed my fishing gear in my truck and headed out. (You didn’t think I was going to bike out there, did you? C’mon now!)

Upon my arrival, I saw five suspects (sorry: cop flashback), I mean five kids who seemed to fit the description. Three of the kids were already at the water’s edge, throwing metal lures. I hit up the other two and verified that yes, indeed, these were my mystery fishing yutes. “Oliver has already caught like three fish!” I was directed to a teen who was casting nonstop.

“I’m here with my dad. He’s over there with my sister. I caught a couple of bluefish already. And a shad!” Oliver was nonplussed by the old dude bothering him while he was focused on catching his next fish. I decided that it was always best to introduce myself to the parents first, so I left the very dialed-in Oliver to his quest for fish number 4.

“I don’t really know where it comes from: the kid just loves to fish!” Sean Sullivan was beaming as he told me about Oliver. Sean had been fishing for a couple of hours and had joined Oliver in catching a few fish. He told me that he was grateful to be out on the beach with Oliver and his six-year-old daughter, Stella. “Look at her cast: she’s got it!” Sean was not wrong! Little Stella was determined, firing her lure a pretty good distance for someone of her stature. “Oliver is using a rod that I found somewhere. I think that reel is one that I dug up from my dad’s stuff in his basement. I don’t really know how this all started. I’m not a real good fisherman. I think Oliver is showing me how!”

Camden Carson was silently casting away, motivated by some jumping baitfish in the distance. Camden was the biggest of the crew, standing a full head taller than his buddies. He evoked a steadiness that quiet leaders bring: that important intangible for every great team that we hear expressed as “He’s a great locker room guy.” Camden talked about Oliver’s

fish from earlier in the day, trying to focus the spotlight elsewhere. He humbly deferred to their friend Rojus as being the best fisher amongst them. (Rojus wasn’t at the beach this day, but he should know that all of his buddies said the same thing!)

Lucas Miskinis was leaving the beach as I was arriving. He had an infectious smile and a very fun demeanor. Lucas also had a Plano tackle box full of gear, something of an exception for this crew. It was obvious that the four other Musketeers loved to fish with him.

Beau McKechnie was casting like a wild man, utilizing an exaggerated sidearm motion. Beau was the smallest of the five but also the feistiest—I could relate to him instantly. I asked him if I could show him a little bit about casting more overhead than sidearm. Beau listened intently and then worked on the technique that I had demonstrated. He told me, “We’ve been getting up at 4:00 a.m. and biking out. Our parents are ok with this and they like that we can do this ourselves.” Beau had the true Goonie spirit – “Goonies never say die!” He was clearly very fun to be around.

Weylin Mooney was thoughtful. He had seen the baitfish jumping and had retreated to go through his tackle to see what might lure would better suit the conditions. I had brought some Island X Hellfire 180 lures for the crew and handed them out. I told the five that this was my absolute go-to all summer long and how it mimicked so many food sources for the blues and stripers. I could see Weylin immediately picking up on the value of this versatile lure. He put one on his line and got busy.

“I fish three or four days a week. I like the ponds. I just love to reel them in!” Weylin gave his dad, Cameron, credit for showing him how to cast and what to look for when fishing. “Stripers are my favorite to catch.” I thought about that day that I had first seen Weylin at the North Head. His love for fishing was very evident that day, as was his joy of being out with his friends. Wow, these five kids are just as cool as Tammy and brother Bill had told me!

So are these kids the Nantucket equivalent of The Goonies? Yeah, I can see the comparison. Much like The Goonies, these guys stick together. They have amazing spirit and a wonderful respect for each other. They are capable and determined. And they never say die! And just like their cinematic counterparts, these kids have discovered the “rich stuff”—not in pirate treasure, but in the beauty of the Nantucket waters.

I relate more to the crew from “Stand By Me,” however. I know that a group this tight at age 13 will grow so much through their shared experiences: traumas, hopes, fears, and finding the courage to face those fears. They will develop their moral compasses together, testing and refining them as they move forward.

Meeting these awesome kids made me recall the words that Richard Dreyfuss spoke to close “Stand By Me”: “Friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant… I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve.” So very true. Fish on, kids!

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. The Nantucket Historical Association preserves, interprets, and shares the diverse stories of Nantucket with all audiences through its collections, properties, programs, and research. In addition to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, the public is invited to visit THE OLDEST HOUSE, built in 1686 and believed to be the oldest residence on Nantucket still on its original site; THE OLD MILL, said to have been built in 1746, this is the only surviving mill of 5 that once stood overlooking Nantucket town; THE HADWEN HOUSE, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1846; GREATER LIGHT, a stunning and unique home that was built as a barn in 1790 and renovated & repurposed in the 1930s into a home that illustrates the era of Nantucket’s art colony days. from Columbia and an MA in American and New England Studies from Boston University—what inspires an academic to write about witches, magic, and pirates? Howe answers by saying that she likes to write about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

“Pirates and witches are two sides of the same coin...Most, but not all, witches were women being punished in spectacular fashion for challenging the dominant power structure. Pirates were mostley men, but not always, and were punished in spectacular fashion for challenging the dominant power structure...the end of the era of witches overlaps with the golden age of pirates...witches and pirates have a lot in common,” Howe explained. “Also, I’m a sailor, and pirates are objectively awesome,” she added.

It was as she wrestled with her dissertation about 15 years ago that the idea for her first novel—The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane—came to her. “I would walk around Marblehead (near Salem) [the town] was still rough around the edges... we were living in a house built in the 1700s, and someone had left a horseshoe charm. That made me think of the vestiges of belief that we have,” she explained. “It was surprising to me that every version of the Salem [witch trials] story I had seen up to that point was skeptical of the people in the past — like The Crucible... nothing I read regarded the colonial experience as they had believed it.... At the time, I had “ABD status” [all but dissertation], and I kept hitting a wall. I distracted myself by thinking about my idea for a novel...Ideas sometimes come barging in on you... I told [my friend] Matthew my book idea during a poker game one night, and unbeknownst to me he pitched it to his agent. She thought it was a good idea, and I met with her... I’m so lucky!” That first novel Howe wrote became her first New York Times Best Seller.

Deliverance can be described as magical realism based in historical fact: “most of my books have an element [of this]—it’s not fantasy: it’s understanding reality in a magical way. I have no way of knowing what beliefs I hold today that in 400 years may be thought of as crazy: people in the past had no way of seeing past their time... it’s a difference of understanding the world.” In her more recent books, Howe has moved away from magical realism. During the past few years, she co-wrote with broadcast journalist Anderson Cooper two non-fiction books based on Cooper’s family history: Vanderbilt and Astor.

Although Katherine Howe grew up in Houston, Texas (and once won an award there for “Most Improved at Baton Twirling), her ancestors settled in Essex County, Massachusetts in the 1620s. She is related to both Elizabeth Proctor and Elizabeth Howe, women convicted of being witches during the Salem Witch Trials. Proctor was spared because she was pregnant at the time of her scheduled execution, and later among prisoners released. Another relative, Edward Howe, was a 19th century ship captain whose wife, Hannah Masury, took over his ship after his death during a Pacific excursion. Hannah Masury is Katherine Howe’s great aunt, and her story became the inspiration for Howe's most recent novel A True Account (November 2023). This book tells the story of a woman who dressed up as a cabin boy, set sail, and turned to pirating.

In addition to being an author and co-author, Katherine Howe also works as an editor: “I enjoy every aspect of each [task]: they have their pleasures and their challenges. But my favorite is writing a novel.” One of her favorite places to write is in a cafe in Salem called Front Street Cafe.

When asked what she likes best about being an author, Howe answered: “What do I enjoy about breathing?... I don’t know what else I would do! I enjoy feeling completely absorbed into a world I am creating... and I get no greater pleasure than hearing from readers who enjoyed what I wrote or got something from it.”

Tips she offers to aspiring writers include: “read outside your comfort zone: it’s important to read many different kinds of things...Write to stretch your wings; write without worry about what anyone will think... Connections are important: if it weren’t for Matthew, I would not have this career... And be confident enough to talk about your work with people. Don’t say “no” on your own behalf... have the courage to give yourself permission...Remember that sometimes the answer is YES.”
