Visiting the Wizard

Unsinkability. Is that a real term? Well, I’m going to say yes, seeing how my spellcheck feature didn’t draw a red line under the word. But what does it really mean to be unsinkable? It’s not always a positive term, of course. The Titanic was said to be unsinkable, and that didn’t go so well. But in my lexicon, if I feel that someone is considered unsinkable, it’s high praise.

I had to think of where my love of unsinkability came from. It finally hit me – I had watched the 1964 movie “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” with my grandmother, Dorothy Allen, when I was a kid. The film started with little tiny baby Molly Brown floating down a flood-swollen river in a crib. Molly, played by Debbie Reynolds, overcame an endless series of calamities in her life, including a trip on the afore-mentioned Titanic. Molly Brown’s buoyancy developed from her pluck, her street smarts, and her endless optimism. Nothing was going to get her down. As the lovely Ms. Reynolds stated in her funny little hillbilly accent, “Nobody wants to see me down like I wants to see me up!”

As you can clearly see, I hold unsinkability up as a key quality of the kind of person I want around me. When life throws lemons, the unsinkable person buys the house a round of lemonade in short order. And it was this notion exactly that added some pep to my step when I recently went to visit the Wizard, Mr. Jeff Allen. Jeff is the proprietor of Fish Stix – Nantucket fishing rods, the finest custom fishing rods around. Jeff is fun, knowledgeable, and a little bit mysterious (again, a great quality in Stevie World). I was excited for my hang with Jeff that afternoon as he was going to spec out a new fishing rod for me. Yeah, I was having a pretty good day.

“So your Fish Stix rod needs a big brother, right? Come check out these rod blanks and see what might work for you.” Jeff had already selected a half dozen candidates for me to peruse. Each rod blank was in the realm of 10 feet long. Some felt whippy, others felt very stiff.

“Here, let me be the fish for you,” Jeff said, grabbing the far end of the rod blanks and bending them to what would seem to be well past the breaking point.

Time Well Spent

In August, if you catch the weather right, you can enjoy Billionaire Beach Day. Last week, at Fisherman’s Beach, the sky glowed, the ocean glistened, and the parking was available. After several days of a pretty heavy southerly wind, the waves wobbled in from the horizon until the hit the shallows, when they climbed to head high and collapsed into a rolling tube. Above the wind and waves, the Bombardiers, the G-7s, and the commercial jets landed and took off over Nobadeer. The people came.

The southwesterly wind flung an ant in the picnic. It whipped the tops off the waves, sent the sand flying, and, in one perilous moment, caught a poorly anchored beach umbrella. Three wiry pale cousins ran after the cartwheeling hazard until it paused, and they stood on the fabric. Order was restored and peace regained.

The cousins threw together like boys of an age will, and heaved themselves back into the head high surf. They played a game without a name. It involved leaping to the top of wave, splashing the other cousins, pulling each other underwater, and, of course, getting boiled in the surf. After one particularly forceful wave flipped a cousin, he popped up on the sand “Did you see that! That was awesome.”

The tide sped the cousins down the beach to the rip. Just as fathers and onlookers were getting out of their chairs and looking for rescue equipment, the young men ran out of the sand and back up the beach for Round Two (or Round 600.)

Their other cousins, in two piece bathing suits, amassed around a sand castle. They built turrets and walls, then decorated them with shells, pebbles, and the detritus of time. They crab-walked over wings of the castle then perched to put either a sand dollar or a sand flea at the top of the tower. Sand fleas were a particular specialty: they dug into the sand, found a flea the size of their thumbs, and dropped them in the moat. Good of builders and hunters, they were lousy captors. In the summer of Barbie, the women were creating while the boys were getting boiled. But the girls had to get the sand off one way or another, so they dove into the neck of a rolling wave.

For most of my beach days this summer, I have been joined by families the size of hockey teams. Today, the pack of cousins had emerged from a large semicircle of sisters, their boyfriends, fathers, uncles, aunts, mothers, and a grandmother. In the semi-circle, the olds monitored, with one ear to the gossip and a hand on the novel in the lap. They had come well equipped for the afternoon. They used a set of YETI coolers, Tommy Bahama beach chairs, and Cisco Brewers visors and hats. For lunch, they had made sandwiches which emerged from various reused plastic bags. They had chips, carrots and celery, a tin of cookies which made the rounds, and many pastel boozy seltzers. For when they felt athletic, they had kadima paddles, lacrosse sticks, and one faded, well-loved Spikeball Net.

One umbrella had been set up and anchored just to the back of the semicircle, amid the YETI’s and the toys. Under it, and under a wide straw hat, an older woman slept.

Above and beyond her, the adults talked. When the wind gusted, they raised their voices. They talked about lunch downtown, and dinner, and Negroni and whiskey. They talked about lacrosse and who went to Cornell and who wanted to go and who got turned down. They talked of marriages that were failing and had

This Sunday Is for Rainbows

This Sunday morning, August 20, hundreds will trek to the beach at Brant Point to watch a beautiful and joyful spectacle that has been a part of summer on Nantucket for half a century: the Rainbow Parade.

Artist G.S. Hill is usually among them. “I do a lot of on-location sketches during Opera Cup,” he explained. “The first year we were here, 1979, was the first year that I painted the Rainbow Fleet...it’s one of my favorite subjects. They’re so colorful!”

If you cannot stay on-island through Sunday to see the Rainbows or if you are arriving after the event, you can still see a colorful display of these catboats masterfully rendered on canvas in the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf.

Since the mid 1800s, the catboat has been a favorite on Nantucket for leisure sailing and for teaching children how to sail. When the Nantucket Yacht Club was founded in 1906, they organized races and encouraged members to buy boats of the same design to eliminate the need for handicapping.

In 1921, the Yacht Club commissioned a one-design fleet of 16-foot catboats for young members. According to historian Michael Harrison, “it was [Vice Com-

Spotted Lantern Fly Found on Nantucket

Sometimes finding a new species on the island is a welcome site; a new bird to add to a life list or a plant long forgotten and rediscovered. This is not one of those times, however. Unfortunately, but not surprising, Spotted Lantern Fly has now been found on Nantucket. Spotted Lantern Fly (Lycorma delicatula or “SLF”) is an invasive insect originally from Asia that has been spreading throughout the northeastern US since it was first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014, coming from a shipment of stone. It has since spread to 14 states in New England and the mid-Atlantic, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

As an adult, it is quite distinctive looking, making identification easy. Adult lanternflies resemble moths and are about one inch long, its gray top wings are black polka-dotted, as their name implies. They also have distinctive bright red spotted underwings making them easy to spot (no pun intended).

Professionals on-island both in conservation and in horticulture have been on the lookout for SLF for some time. As a tourist destination, with people and

The islands of Nantucket and Lahaina have been intertwined since the early 1800s, when Nantucket whalemen first sailed to what would become a bustling port. In 1824, 100 whaleships visited the islands: by 1846, 736 stopped there, most of them from Nantucket or New Bedford.

Connections between Nantucket and Maui continue today, with residents who have moved from one island to the other and some who still maintain residences on both. jackets, sweaters, linen pants, bags, designer bags, necklaces, earrings, broaches, bracelets, sandals, heels, and so much more. Kristen wanted to bring a little color to the island with Rainbow Fleet and she surely meant it, with the kind and sweet disposition of Kristen and the other workers, the beautiful array of colorful clothing just walking into the store is sure to brighten your day and make you feel at home.

Kristen is a 9th-generation Nantucket local and has lived on-island the majority of her life. She spent her childhood living, working, and shopping at stores around the island. She always searched for unique, expressive clothing and found that a lot of pieces were out of her reach. “I feel like I designed this store for my 15-year-old self,” she commented. Kristen is highly selective and only sells pieces that are in new to excellent condition. She tries to stay away from fast fashion, except for the rare exception of pieces that are good quality and in style at the moment that she believes her customers will love. There are even a few racks of men’s clothes in the store that are filled with Hawaiian shirts, big rock tees, sweatshirts, and vintage Levi’s that Kristen stocks

because she knows women love these items too. She has 600 consignors, a majority of which are local to Nantucket, who help provide her with her amazing selection.

When Kristen was living off-island to attend college, she frequented a consignment shop in Amherst. The woman running the shop decided to step down and thought Kristen would be the perfect person to run the store. She became the youngest business owner in Amherst. While managing her own store and then traveling throughout her 20s, she saw many great consignment stores and wondered why Nantucket did not have one.

Back on Nantucket in 2019, Kristen opened Rainbow Fleet. A friend told her that 167 Orange was available, and from the moment she saw it, Kristen knew exactly what she wanted to do with the space: a consignment store. It would be a perfect adventure. In a matter of two weeks, she created her brand new business, what is today Rainbow Fleet. She spread the word on Facebook, and on opening day there were customers and consignors there ready to support her. She still works with some of her original consignors.

The name Rainbow Fleet is probably quite familiar to most Nantucketers, the Marshall Gardiner image depicting the cat boats with bright sails heading around Brant Point is iconic to the island. You can witness this colorful scene this Sunday, during the Rainbow Fleet Parade at 9 am: the Harbor Start for Opera House Cup Race.

When Kristen was searching for a name for her new store ,she was struggling to find a quintessential Nantucket term that was not already used. She wanted something that would be able to represent the island, but also something that was fun and colorful like the clothes, “everything on the island is gray” she joked. She had a print of the Marshall Gardiner photograph hanging in her house and one day it hit her that it would be the perfect name. To her, it shows a colorful depiction of the town she calls home and displays individuals coming together and representing differences. Kristen also worked at the Toy Boat on Straight Wharf for 14 years: the name was the perfect homage to Loren Brock, the owner who Kristen secribes as “a role model to me in the meticulous and loving way she approached operating her business.” Kristen uses the lessons Loren taught her every day while running Rainbow Fleet.

“That one can throw lures in the one- to three-ounce range. What do you think?” One particular blank just felt right. I could envision it being the perfect tool for the job on a day when the wind was whipping and the fish were crashing a good distance from the beach. I nodded. Jeff just laughed, saying, “I knew this was the one that you would like best.” Of course he did. Wizards know things.

I had decreed that Jeff Allen was the Wizard of Fishing Rods after we had danced this same dance a couple of years earlier. Jeff had built me a fishing rod that is so perfect that I named it The Cheat Code. It makes casting and catching so easy that it’s an unfair advantage! Jeff had listened to me when I told him that I needed a lighter rod, one that I could fish every day, all day. It had to have the backbone to handle a big striper or gator bluefish but also have the feel for me to be able to toss soft plastic lures with some of the required finesse. Jeff sized up my situation, disappeared into his wizard cave and conjured up the absolute perfect fishing rod for my needs. My only complaint with it is that whenever a client uses it, they don’t want to give it back to me!

So exactly how did Jeff become the wizard? I had to know, and being the nosey guy that I am, I asked him. What I learned is that Jeff Allen, much like Molly Brown, is unsinkable.

“Twelve years ago, I got very sick. My vision was fading, my balance was gone. I was extremely weak.” Jeff told me that he eventually made his way to the office of Dr. Tim Lepore, another certified wizard. Dr. Lepore immediately suspected that Jeff had an ad-

vanced case of Lyme’s Disease. There was a lot of blood work examined and medications administered. Specialists were quickly called upon, particularly neurologists. “I had a three hour neurological examination at Mass. General in Boston. And later on, I had physical therapy rehabilitation sessions that were similar to what stroke victims undergo. I had to relearn a lot of things.”

Jeff was in a battle, to be sure. His thriving photography business was put on hold due to Jeff’s physical instabilities (Spoiler Alert: Jeff is back to photography, caring for his loyal customer base). But one of the qualities of being unsinkable is having the ability to persevere, no matter what. Jeff decided that this health crisis could be turned into an opportunity. “I needed to find something to do that would bring people joy, get them outside. And also not have me chained to a computer.”

Jeff had been curious about building fishing rods, sparked by his friendship with long-time rod builder Barry Thurston. “Barry gave me a lot of help and encouragement at the start. I also began watching YouTube how-to videos while I was getting my medical infusions.” Jeff’s wife Betty was fully supportive of his new activity. “She saw me trying to use the manual hand-wrapping device and said that I needed to order the powered one. So I did!” Soon Jeff was attending fishing rod builder seminars in North Carolina. The rest, as they say, is history.

Nah, not quite. Because wizardry involves magic and you can’t just order magic from a fishing rod building supplier. The real magic came from Jeff’s artistic eye. Years of looking at things from behind his camera lens had honed Jeff’s instincts about what makes people tick. Jeff certainly would have made a

good detective. He sizes up the physical characteristics of his clients, of course, but he also observes their mannerisms and makes mental notes about their personalities. Are they intense? Methodical? Easy going or high-motor types? All of these observations help him determine what type of rod will work best for the individual client. Jeff questions his customers to help them define exactly what it is that they think they’re looking for in a fishing rod. “I ask people to tell me about their favorite species to catch, where they fish, how they fish, what kind of travel they do, things like that. I guess it’s an interview. But they walk away with a great product and a great experience.” Yes, they certainly do—I can attest to this!

Jeff took me on a tour of his rod-making shop. Every tiny detail that Jeff puts into a fishing rod is based upon his contact with the customer. He demonstrated how he forms the cork fore-grips for his rods on a lathe. He showed me the detailed wraps that he uses to attach the line guides to the rods. We looked at the beautiful IRT fishing reels that he pairs to his rods. They are of a quality worthy of the finished Fish Stix – Nantucket rod. Some folks will treat Jeff’s finished product like the work of art that it is. Others, like me, are going to fish it like they stole it. But every customer leaves Jeff’s shop with the fishing equipment that they had been dreaming of.

Jeff stood in his showroom, surrounded by his fishing rods, reels and rod blanks. “My dad was an amazing fisherman. We were inseparable. I remember him taking me out on a frozen Quincy harbor, spearing eels through the ice. Or we’d rent a flat back dory with a little 15-horsepower motor and go fishing all day. He would be blown away if he could see this!”

I have to agree with Jeff. His father would certainly be smiling at the love that Jeff instills in every fishing rod that leaves his shop, along with the top notch quality and amazing workmanship. Jeff’s dad would be proud to see that Jeff spends his days helping others to get the joy out of fishing that Jeff and he shared. He would be glad to see that Jeff never succumbed to the easy out of self-pity when faced with his health challenges. Jeff’s dad would love to see how much his son cares for his community and the significant charity work that Jeff does. Yes, he would be proud of Jeff’s magic. And his unsinkability.

Then they whispered about how She bought another storage unit that would cost four times as much as the stored stuff was worth. She thought She might have Christmas here, which would be a pain since the kids were sleeping in tents in August. Where would they stay in snow?

She shifted under her umbrella.

Then they talked of cancer and oncologists and treatments and remission.

Then they stared at the ocean or picked up their books. She continued to nap.

Rather, she appeared to nap. She had been taught that the appropriate phrase was resting her eyes. So she was. She absorbed the words and the shadows of her children. Through the sand, she felt the running footsteps of her grandchildren. She smelled the mayonnaise and the lobster, the chips, the cookies, even the pastel seltzer.

After the drippings of pain, wisdom reveals itself. There had been other luxuries: of money, of attention, of affection. But all of those luxuries paled, melted, and slipped away. She had traded time for them and, in the end, watched them melt. She was left with an unteachable wisdom: The Only Luxury is Time.

She had seen folks in her life, both held in their warmth of her heart or left in the cold of her shadow, spend their last seconds after letting decades disappear on a conference table or a golf course. She was no better, she had let her time go like popcorn. She had spent so much time in front of televisions. She had loaned out that time over dinner tables and sofas. She had unspooled a king’s ransom on the 84 in Connecticut, on 95 in New Jersey, on 128 in Massachusetts. She had sat alone in a room overlooking the driveway and pushed second after second out of her purse. The world had taken regular deductions from her savings until, now, her savings had grown scant.

So, she brought them all down to their father’s old house. She coaxed, indulged, and, frankly, threatened. She hired cleaners. She rented beds. With the distant memory of August beaches, the golden promise of Nantucket, and the fear of an empty will, they came. They brought the children before they were old

enough to go to camps, summer school, or Jamborees. They brought their spouses. They brought their troubles and their worries and their anxiety that made them fret about Cornell, storage units, and Christmas.

Here they were, in a moment well spent.

Soon enough, this time will end. It will end with tears and a dorm room. It will end with a slam and a lawyer. It will end with a cough or a fall. It will end in silence in an empty room, reaching for change in empty pockets. The tide sweeps all of us away. The wind eventually lifts us up and sends us somersaulting.

But for today, while the waves can be out run and the castles will stand. The tongues will speak and ears will listen, and there is still one last lobster salad sandwich in the cold of the cooler. There is still time enough in the account to make the check good.

goods arriving from all over the world, especially from highly infested areas like New York and New Jersey, it seems like SLF’s arrival was inevitable. And now, a few individuals have been confirmed.

Last week, nymph stages of SLF were seen by crewmembers of Bartlett’s Tree Experts. Nantucket arborist Jim Cook alerted local conservation professionals about the find. With photo documentation, the sighting was verified and reported to the state. The Nantucket Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) and other island conservation groups are working to help educate the public to be on the lookout. A few nymphs don’t make an official infestation, but they can obviously

get here, so the more vigilant the community can be, the more likely we are to stave off an infestation.

Why are they so bad anyway? Spotted Lanternflies cause damage to trees and other woody plants by feeding on their sap. With an infestation, sucking the sap can reduce photosynthesis, weaken the plant, and eventually contribute to the plant’s death. While the primary host plant of SLF is the invasive tree-ofheaven (which we do have on Nantucket), researchers have found that it also targets grapevines, hops, blueberries, and fruit trees, giving it the potential to become a serious agricultural and ecological pest. The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists more than 100 other host plants.

Not only is their actual feeding harmful to the plants, but they produce “honeydew,” which is a sticky, sugary substance they excrete after eating. During an infestation, the honeydew can coat anything below the feeding insects, leaving plants, shrubs, cars, porches, bikes, everything coated in sticky sugar that ferments and stinks and can host mold. The honeydew also attracts other insects which can cause further damage to trees.

So how did they get here? According to Jennifer Forman Orth, an environmental biologist with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, “We know they are associated with the transportation industry.” In other parts of the state, they have come in on shipments of pumpkins, mums, and other things that are shipped in in the fall, when adults are active in other states. We don’t know exactly how the insects came to Nantucket, but shipments of plants, gravel, and slate have been vectors in other areas. And we definitely ship a lot of goods fitting that description to the island.

In Massachusetts, the SLF was first reported in 2018 when a dead adult was found in a poinsettia plant. Individuals have now been found in 50 towns across the state with 4 outbreaks. SLF has been found on Martha’s Vineyard (Chilmark and Tisbury), but no infestation there yet. The state only considers a community to have an infestation when SLF are found active and with all life stages.

State officials ask for people to take photos, report, and, most importantly, to kill any insects found. Last year, New York and New Jersey had “See It Squish It” campaigns encouraging people to squash SLF on site joining their “Stomp Team.” Since they don’t cause any harm to people, squishing them is deemed a safe alternative to non-specific pesticide applications.

On Nantucket, we don’t yet have an infestation. Knowing what could happen, continued on page 24

though, gives insight into why we want to be vigilant with spotting and squishing any seen.

The Spotted Lanternfly’s physical appearance transforms throughout its life stages as it matures to adulthood. The individuals that were found on Nantucket were one of the first instars (or nymphs): black with white spots. In infested areas, the nymphs often gather in large numbers on host plants, and at twilight can be easily found migrating up and down the trunk of the tree or plant. The nymphs look like black beetles with white spots on their back when they are young, but as they mature, they change colors to red and black backs with white spots. Nymphs often feed in tree canopies, but when they are blown or knocked out, they fall to the ground, walk to the trunk of trees and climb back up to start feeding again. They are clever concealers, and will also hide in vehicles, backpacks, backyard benches, firewood, bicycles, garden tools and a host of other common places. Look for the distinctive red shell coloring in the older nymphs and on the adult wings.

What to do? See it squish it! After photographing and reporting, of course. We want to know what, where, and when any individuals are seen. It’s important to check nursey stock where SLF could be hitchhiking. Also check shipments of stone, including flagstone, since we know they like to hide and potentially lay eggs there.

Another important step is knowledge. New information is constantly coming out as professionals in the northeast learn more about SLF in their new range. They may have gotten here accidentally, but experts now think that our warming climate could increase the species’ range and make explosions of the population harder to control or predict.

The state has extensive educational resources with tips for identification, what to do, maps, and more at mass.gov/spotted-lanternfly. There are education materials including coloring pages and origami to get the whole family engaged. IPSC and other island conservation groups are working to alert the public and to survey known populations of tree-of-heaven. With early detection, we hope to eradicate any individuals before Nantucket is infested with Spotted Lanternfly.

modore] Gennett’s idea that the boats wear sails of different colors to distinguish them, and the lively effect this created immediately led to the name “Rainbow Fleet.”

“Now these big Rainbows were lovely, very graceful looking,” reminisced the late Helen Wilson Sherman in a past interview, “but there was no ‘body’ in the stem, so they were quite tippy; they heeled easily in the wind.” In 1927, smaller, lighter catboats were ordered. These Beetle Cats (designed and built by the Beetle Company in New Bedford) were easy for children to handle and very popular throughout New England.

A photograph taken by H. Marshall Gardiner in the late 1920s and released as a postcard in 1930 inspired the concept of a Rainbow Parade. The artistic piece shows ten Rainbows—green, deep yellow, red, old rose, blue, light yellow, and tan—rounding Brant Point. How were the boats so neatly lined up? The boats were actually interconnected and the photographer, along with Vice Commodore Strong, chose a day when waters were very calm.

“Rainbows of Days Past,” one of G.S Hill’s Rainbow Fleet paintings depicts this historic image—the sails are all solid colors, as they were in the 1920s, no stripes or stars as today. The rest of the collection he painted from recent experience, different perspectives and different size canvases. We love his “Rendezvous at Coatue,” a 14 x 42 oil on linen. “I used to take my little boat out to take photos during the parade. This year we’ve been invited to go out on a friend’s boat for the Cup.” So, Greg, we expect some paintings from this new perspective for next season!

Greg and Judi Hill are among the many here who are heartbroken by the loss, trying to reach out to friends in Lahaina, and looking for ways to help. The Hills lived on Maui for more than a decade. “Jerry, a high school friend of Greg’s called and invited us to visit for a few weeks in 1974. We flew to Maui after Christmas, and stayed for 12 years,” Judi explained, “When we got off the plane the scent in the air.. the plumerias… I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It was a paradise to us… the people were lovely… and it was our road to Nantucket.”

Having gotten “sand in their shoes” and deciding to stay, Greg first set up an easel on the sea wall in Lahaina and sold his paintings. Later, he became a member of the Lahaina Artists Association; they had a gallery in the Baldwin House; and Greg was represented in Lynn Shue’s Village Gallery in downtown Lahaina. Among the scenes Greg was painting at the time were Nantucket whaling ships in port there. “Greg was painting Nantucket ships before we ever came to Nantucket,” said Judi, “and Dot and Ed Hyde saw those paintings and reached out to Greg about showing in their Harbor Gallery on Nantucket.”

“We can’t wrap our heads around the losses,” Judi said with sorrow. “We cannot get hold of Jerry or Lynn. We did reach Mary Keller, and she’s okay.” (A recent update on the Village Gallery website states that Lynn and her staff are safe.)x

After recovering a bit from the shock of the news, Greg and Judi started thinking of how they could help to raise money for the people they know and love on Maui. “Ohana they call it.” Greg pulled his entire Hawaii portfolio, and has put out for sale his watercolors of Maui, original pencil drawings, and original oil paintings all done there during the early 1980s. A significant portion of the proceeds are being donated to Maui Strong (hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/mauistrong), a fund with the goal of “providing financial resources that can be deployed quickly, with a focus on rapid response and recovery for the devastating wildfires on Maui.”

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals

basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

Make sure you don’t miss the fishing while you’re here on Nantucket! The HERBERT T sport fishing boat will take you to where the blues are biting. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock.
