Masterworks Opens

From 5 to 7 pm this Friday, August 11, the public is invited to mingle with island artists and view their large works during an opening reception for The Artists Association of Nantucket Masterworks exhibit, upstairs in The Big Gallery at 12 Straight Wharf.

This exhibit “will premier the best works by our members with a focus on oversized pieces that are too large to show in our Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery,” explained AAN Artistic Director and Curator Robert Frazier. AAN’s Big Gallery is the perfect location for the exhibit, as the Thomas Macy Warehouse has lofty ceilings and extra-long windows, lending itself beautifully to showcasing larger works in many different mediums. The Masterworks exhibition will be on display through September 25.

AAN’s current exhibit in their Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 19 Washington Street is By Land & By Sea opened on July 21 and remains on display until August 14. “This island lends itself to beautiful vistas, land and sea, that we felt July was a super time to introduce By Land & By Sea since it has such a summertime feel,” said Peter J. Greenhalgh, AAN Gallery Director. “During this exhibition, visitors will find jewelry, oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, wooden carvings, photographs, and some textiles.”

Online at NantucketArts.org/art is yet another gallery exhibition. Through late summer Make an Impression: All Works on Paper is up to view from anywhere in the world. All these works online are also available for purchase.

The AAN’s mission through each of its exhibitions and work on the island “is to foster the work of its artists, showcase and preserve Nantucket art through its historic Permanent Collection, and offer varied classes and workshops in the visual arts.” In 2023 AAN welcomed several new artist members and now features close to three hundred local artists whose work is highlighted in numerous exhibitions throughout the season. The community of artists on the island has always been so important to its history and is aided by the AAN.

“With each new exhibition, we challenge our artists to bring in works that they believe will complement the theme, however, we never know what that might be,” said Greenhalgh. Still Surfing after All These Years

When you step through the door at 50 Main Street, you step into a combination of past and present.

An impressive array of rare and vintage timepieces dominates the front of The Trinity Collection. These exquisite, sophisticated watches were curated by owner E. Townsend Wright III, who delights in helping his patrons find the perfect timepiece to match their personality and their style. Many of his clients know him from visiting his shop in Palm Beach during the winter and are delighted to find him on Nantucket’s Main Street from June through September.

Venture a bit farther into 50 Main, and you’ll find yourself in the Spyder Wright Gentleman’s Surf Shop, filled with dashing men’s clothing carefully selected to perfectly suit island life. “You can walk out with a pair of Spyder Wright Board Shorts, a Loro Piana jacket, and Patek Philippe Nautilus on your wrist,” E. Townsend explained with a smile.

Legendary surfer Edward “Spyder” Townsend Wright II originally opened this shop on Nantucket more than a quarter century ago. His son, Edward Townsend Wright III, now owns and operates the company. You’ll often find them both at 50 Main (unless the surf is just right). If you see Spyder there this week, wish him happy regards for his 80th birthday!

Wild, Wild West

We humans tend to be territorial. People hang out in areas that they like, staying in their comfort zones. Also, we generally stick to routines and, thus, can be fairly predictable. For example, my wife and I have our favorite spot where we sit for church every Sunday. We would be all out of sorts if we had to move to a different location. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? No, but that’s how humans are. And all of these strange traits are directly applicable to us fishing folks, to be sure.

So where are my fishing comfort zones, you ask? Well, in the spring when I’m fishing for striped bass, I’m right at home on the south shore, mostly in the Miacomet / Cisco area. Why is that? For starters, I live very close by those locations and can be off of my couch and onto the beach in almost no time. Add in the fact that the south shore produces a lot of big stripers in the early part of the season, and it makes a lot of sense that you’ll find me hitting those areas early and often.

When it’s time for me to take people on fishing charters, however, things change. My comfort zone shifts to the eastern edge of the island. I spend most of our summer months fishing the beautiful expanse of Great Point with my clients. The “why there” question gets a three part answer: 1.) It’s simply beautiful out there; 2.) I have a variety of options as to where to fish, regardless of the wind and tide; and 3.) I fish there so much that I have a fairly good understanding of where to go and when to go there. Makes a lot of sense, right?

So what happens when I’m out of my comfort zone? I decided to find out. I took a drive and checked out the newly opened Smith’s Point in Madaket, the exact opposite end of my Nantucket comfort zone. Not knowing quite what to expect out there, I texted my dear cousin and fellow fishing guide Tammy King and asked if she could provide any insight about this strange land on the sundown side of the island. Tammy responded in her usual poetic manner:

“Smith’s Point. You know the ride, the first ride over the dune. See it, visualize in your head—when it first opens to beach driving, you assess every inch of it. That’s where the Nantucket beach magic happens. Smith’s Point is a feeling.”

Gifts We Give, Gifts We Leave Behind

Changeover day lurks in the middle of the summer. One set of guests leaves and their presence must be eliminated before the next set of guests arrives. Sometimes they leave ghosts behind.

We were asked to help clean a brand new house in Tom Nevers after a week’s rental. A crew of landscapers had come by, fluffed up the hydrangeas and the roses, then buzzed the incandescent grass into a military haircut. The pool people came out, ran a robot over the bottom of the pool, scooped out whatever was floating, then hosed down the deck.

Our job was inside. Inside, the warm, ammoniac odor of dying seafood oozed out of the walls. In the white master bedroom, amid the throw pillows, sham, covers, 300 count cotton sheets, the guests had eaten and left two lobsters, drank a bottle and a half of champagne, and splashed the flutes against the glass frame on a Sankaty Light print. Then they left the windows closed and the air conditioning off.

I took the required pictures.

Then I started to clean. The visitors haunted the house, spotting the sofa, grinding the sand into the floor, and infecting the air. The rotting lobster rose up into the rafters and circulated with the fans. We consulted with witches and priests, then boiled a pot of lemon water and left a bowl of vinegar out. Exorcism on a stove.

You never know why people do what they do. In this case, I assume there is a TikTok or a YouTube video that shows the couple celebrating with the sharp and horny shell of a maritime bug. To the Crustacean Lovers, the house is a hotel room, no more. Five figures of rent gives them rights and privileges to stain, soil, and haunt.

While we are on this side of the waves, we need to decide whether we will be ghosts or ancestors. A ghost rattles alone, scares some folks, and calls out a lonely “Boo.” An ancestor stands with the others, above the shadows, with a hand on the shoulder of the living.

When we build houses as investment vehicles and asset instruments, we create little anonymous boxes with Sub Zero refrigerators and Samsung wide screen TVs. The house of the Dead Lobster has the spiritual gifts of ten shares of Exxon stock. You only get rent, tenants, and their ghosts, infused with anger, greed, and spite. The only privilege it offers is financial, not spiritual. No matter how much the building is worth or how much it earns, it creates no generational wealth.

Generational wealth requires time, people, and clutter. You pass down the photos, the boogie boards, and the fishing rods, the old shoes, the blankets, and the towels. Then, covered in sun, sand, and salt you take a picture and line it up with all of the others and hang it in a guest bedroom. You have to follow the “Whale’s Way.”

The “Whales Way” is a cottage on Brant Point that has budded into two more rooms on the bottom floor and a second floor of bedrooms. Nobody had “changedover” in this house. Nobody had rented this house; year to year, decade to decade, generation to generation, it opened its door to familiar visitors. This summer, the second generation was welcoming the third and fourth generation into the mildew,

Nantucket Goes Green

What was once socially unacceptable, to say the least, in recent years has become the norm. Though still outlawed on the federal level, so many states around the country and nations around the world have come to understand the truth behind the benign benefits of cannabis, and the voters have spoken to that truth.

In a relatively short time, so many states in our union have legalized personal cannabis use. As of July 1 of this year, only eleven states remain that have not fully turned the corner of legalization, at least in terms of decriminalization. In 2016, Massachusetts got on board by passing question 4: The Regulation and Taxation of Cannabis Initiative. And dispensaries—medical, recreational, or both— packed with pristine product and passionate, knowledgeable staff, began opening around the Commonwealth to cater to peoples’ needs and enjoyment.

As far as we know, cannabis has been cultivated and consumed by human beings for nearly 5,000 years. The earliest evidence we have dates back to China around the year 2,800 BC. The plant was used to treat a vast array of health problems and was listed in Emperor Shen Nung's pharmacopoeia. A lot has changed since then, both in terms of the public’s view of cannabis and the quality and characteristics of the plants itself, but as we all well know, some things never change.

Doug Leighton, born and raised on Cape Cod, fell in love with Nantucket at an early age. “I had grown up on The Cape, my parents would take their boat here. My wife and I began coming to Nantucket in 1996. We bought a house in Cisco in 2005 and named it Pipe Dream.” Somewhat fortuitous, because two years ago he opened the doors to a groundbreaking storefront and facility.

All of the facilities at ACK Natural are done at above or beyond medical grade. “The facility goes 30 feet below ground, far underneath the state-of-the-art dispensary. “We have created one of the best grow rooms possible: pharmaceutical-grade PVC walls, which is known for its resistance to mold and mildew.” Because the facility is so deep on an island made of sand, during construction the walls began to collapse. “We essentially had to build a foundation of steel around the foundation,” Leighton explained.

Take Home a Memory

About 40 years ago, island resident, diver, and businessman Philip Osley got a call about a fishing boat stranded off of Great Point. He went out to investigate and found only a small white dinghy. Osley brought it in and was never able to ascertain who owned it. Since no one claimed it, Olsey decided to have a bit of fun with it. He painted it red and added names that he changes every few years: so far it’s been Sunken Ship (after Osley’s store), 007, and Yellow Dog. “It’s gonna stay there forever,” commented one of Phil Osley’s sons.

Still bobbing in the harbor at Easy Street, this red boat is an iconic symbol of Nantucket to many (and, no, this is not the dory that carries the lighted Christmas tree every December).

Nantucket artist G.S. Hill loves capturing this red boat in his paintings of the harbor. This season he’s done a Red Boat Series, and it’s amazing how different this simple peaceful scene can look depending on time of day and weather conditions. “It’s one of the best known boats on Nantucket,” commented Greg Hill, “I love to paint it on a foggy day...and [when it’s sunny] in the late afternoon when the sun is behind the boat, the shadows are beautiful.”

Stop by the G.S. Hill Gallery at 40 Straight Wharf to see Greg’s Red Boat Series and take home a Nantucket memory. There are a dozen or so variations—different angles, different moods, different frames, and different sizes (even 3x3 minis).

A Shaded Walk Through Time

Living on the island year-round, we have to mix up our walking and hiking trails. I have two dogs that need exercise (and love water). I can easily get in a rut and rotate through the same three or four trails every week. Over the past years, I have made an effort to try new trails (or trails that are new to me) or to return to areas I thought I knew but haven’t visited in a while. With more than 9,000 acres under protection as open space, we are lucky to have so many trails on Nantucket to choose from!

One trail I was rewarded with rediscovering is the trail system around Stump Pond. I’ve been familiar with Stump Pond itself for a long time. Now a stable, amoeba-shaped pond, it was once the feeder pond for Windswept Bogs when the cranberry bogs were in active production. The Windswept Bogs themselves are right along Polpis Road and are a pretty popular walking spot. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation, which owns the bogs, is working on a huge restoration project for the area which will restore wetland flow, among other goals. The public can access Stump Pond trails via the Windswept parking lot on Polpis Road, but I recently discovered the Almanac Pond Road entrance to the trails that the Nantucket Land Bank (NLB) maintains. This access point is a little quieter: a rarity on-island during August.

The Stump Pond loop trail that I take covers property jointly owned by the Land Bank and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF). To get to the trail from the Milestone Rotary, drive east on Milestone Road for 0.3 miles before turning left onto Polpis Road. Continue on Polpis Road for 4.3 miles, then turn right

Anyone who has ridden the waves will recognize the moniker “Spyder.” For decades his custom-crafted surfboards have been the boards of choice, and since the late 1960s he has been a fixture in the Hawaiian surfing scene.

“Both my mother and father were ocean people...we always lived near the ocean and our vacations were always ocean-oriented....When I was a little rascal, my father would blow up canvas rafts real hard so that we could ride the waves.”

He grew up in Maryland, but went to school at California State at Long Beach. It was in California, at Huntington Pier, that he first learned to surf. “I remember thinking at first ‘this is a sport’?” With his love of the sea, he took right to it. “It was very, very territorial [at Huntington Pier]...as a newcomer, I wasn’t accepted with open arms...but I became fairly good fairly quickly and was accepted into the group.” He was christened by fellow surfers with the nickname “Spyder” when they saw how proficient he was in walking back and forth on the longboard. The name stuck.

The summer between his freshman and sophomore years, Spyder began making surfboards, and some months later he opened his first shop in Ocean City, Maryland. “My father was an engineer, and I grew up with that need to build things. When I first went to California, there were just a handful of board makers, so I decided to make my own. A couple of friends were shaping their own boards, and they gave me some tips...the shaping of is key, and it’s the hardest part.”

By the mid-1960s, Spyder had discovered the joys of surfing in Hawaii. His first day there, during lunch at the Outrigger Club, he met Duke Kahanamoku, Kimo McVay, and Fred Hemmings, who asked him to represent Kahanamoku’s clothing line in Hawaii and on the mainland. Hemmings later introduced Spyder to the north shore of Maui, which at the time very few surfers frequented. “Lifeguards were giving out false reports to keep the crowds away...I rode the biggest waves in Maui.”

It wasn’t long before Spyder Inc. grew to include additional shops in Palm Beach, Florida, in Rehoboth, Annapolis, Georgetown, and here on Nantucket.

Wright discovered Nantucket Island in 1978. “Bill and Bobbie Rich stopped by my store in Georgetown and told me ‘you’ve just got to come to Nantucket’...I got off the boat and fell in love...There were just a handful of surfers here then, now there are far more.”

Despite his many business commitments, Spyder continued to surf, both for pleasure and to compete and win. He has surfed up and down the East Coast, Puerto Rico, California, Hawaii, as well as internationally in Biarritz, France, and in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, the Canary Islands, Mexico, Central and Latin America, and the Caribbean. Among his many wins, he was the East Coast champion in 1979 and was a finalist in the National Championships in Hawaii in 1980. More recently, he’s been in the Grand Masters Division, for surfers over the age of 60. In 2020 he was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame, and this winter he will participate in the Hawaiian Pacific Tournament.

“I have this fabulous spot outside of Haleiwa on the north shore of Oahu with a break in front of my house...I can lift my head off my pillow in the morning to check out the surf...Conditions are near perfect: the water is 70 to 72 degrees and crystal clear, the air temp in the mid-70s...when the waves break on reefs you can predict where they’re going to break, unlike here where the sandbars shift.”

So how did he go from making something so large to making something so tiny and precise as a fine watch? These passions actually developed side-by-side. “When I was 15 years old, my father gave me a project: I was to take apart his WWII watch, inventory all the pieces, and put it back together so that it worked...after that I was fascinated...every time I got some money, I bought an antique watch. Surfing and watches are at different ends of the spectrum, but there are engineering aspects to both.”

He began making his own watches in the 1970s, starting with his DC3 watch, modeled after a pilot’s watch. The watch has a surgical steel case, platinum rotors, a waterproof screw down back, and 25-jewel movement. “I wanted to make a watch that was tough, durable, and completely waterproof. The crystal is completely sealed, non-breakable, and can’t be scratched.” He’s constantly sketching new design ideas to add to the watches he has in production. This summer he plans to introduce a new Anniversary Edition Watch. He’s keeping the details under wraps till the launch, but did say the new design is tough and durable as his whole line, and that it was inspired by the ocean.

Spyder may have downsized his direct involvement in the business, but he hasn’t lost his passion for surfing, for the ocean, or for his family. Wright and his children surf. “Townsend the IV is 15 now: I introduced him to surfing on the south shore of Oahu when he was 5 or 6.” Spyder’s advice to beginners: “Be kind and courteous in and out of the water.”

sand, and cobwebs that created a Nantucket summer.

We do minimal work here. The water needed to be turned on. Then, the house needed a walk through. Mice shifted and hesitated, dropping their commas. Fellow trespassers, the mice knew when to make themselves scarce.

The house was a thing of trophies. Along the beams in the main room, twelve fishing rods collected spider webs and stories. Several fish had been mounted onto the wall, but the pictures did the fisherman more justice. A series of middle aged men, in different clothing, held up striped bass, albacore, and tuna. In all of the rest of the pictures, squads of children climbed on dunes, splashed in the water, or tumbled into south shore waves. Upstairs, in places of pride, Great Gramma Emily had painted a series of watercolors of Nantucket scenes. Years of creeping through the house like a gypsy in the palace had taught me that there were ten thousand other watercolors wedged into a cardboard box in a cabinet in the garage.

Everyone who had come to the house had left something: books, t-shirts, flip-flops, and quahog shells. The clutter from the ancestors built a castle for the living.

At this point, as the next generation took over the maintenance of the property, the gifts pushed at the seams. The books in the living room bookcase had swollen with mildew so that they couldn’t be removed without removing a shelf. The towels and blankets had, at one point, the names of the children embroidered on them. Then, after the appropriate interval, new initials were embroidered onto new towels. But

the divorced and the dumped kept their towels in the closet, as did the dead.

Should the house ever be sold, it would be knocked down just after the check cleared. As an investment vehicle, it had little worth. The floor boards sloped to the ocean, the doors wouldn’t shut in summer, and blooms of mildew appeared every July in the peaks. Gramma, on her last visit, swore that the spiderwebs kept it up. Her ancestral self resided amid the paintbrushes, the rag rugs, and the highball glasses. Right now, as I cleaned up mouse turds, she was curious what I was still doing in the house. I nodded to Gramma Betty, left a handle of Seagram’s on the counter and a pint of half-and-half in the fridge, then backed out of the house.

“Whale’s Way” seated the ancestors in its musty ceiling. They brought the children, they brought the books, they brought the fishing rods then left them for the future. They showed a path forward, locked into the Brant Point sand. To own “Whale’s Way” took privilege, but to keep it conferred privilege. There are the gifts we are given, then there are the gifts we leave behind. To the new masters of Whale’s Way, their ancestors have left behind a path forward, littered as it might be with books, fishing lures, and sand. You were never just a guest: you were among the fishermen, the painters, and the beach bums.

My vagrant gypsy life has had too many changeovers and too few ancestors. I have spent many years emptying the trash, cleaning the toilets, and moving on. In a world that spins madly, fast feet and a light heart have been my best gifts. Yet, in all of that speed, I cast a warm eye on the one spot that remains fixed. In a world where everything changes, the constant remind us who we were and who we could have been.

Jewelry with presence, these rings are crafted from 18k green gold, these rings are set with hand-carved scarabs—some cameo, some intaglio—using aquamarine, turquoise, lapis, and ametrine. The bands are carved like snakes (guardians of the Egyptians), and inset into each side is a gem that sparkles like the sun: colorful sapphires, mother of pearl, moonstone.

Because R. Simantov begins with rough gems and uses his own team to cut them to fit his vision, his clients can be a part of the process from the very start, even choosing the gemstones they want featured in the jewelry he creates for them. Many enjoy sitting with Reubin in his shop garden, sipping and selecting just the right color and depth.

His extraordinary scarab rings are just one example of the stunning designs, fine details, and expert craftmanship of R.Simantov. His display cases are filled with necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cuffs, brooches, cufflinks the likes of which you’ll see nowhere else. Many of his designs have a touch of whimsy: turn over an earring and you may find a tiny carved crab, behind a ring you may discover a tiny seahorse. This designer truly does bring the artistry of the past into the present for future generations.

Mr. Roger’s neighborhood (for those who don’t know, Mr. Rogers—yes, that Mr. Rogers—spent many summers with his family at their house known as the Crooked House, located right on the Smith’s Point beach access road). I could almost feel the spirit of Fred Rogers and Madaket Millie watching me as I headed for that beautiful beach. Yes, Tammy, Smith’s Point is a feeling indeed.

“Everyone you talk to about this area has that same feeling of excitement and awe. And then there’s the fishing! This week I noticed troubled waters and bait tickling the surface. Sure enough, small blues emerged. After a half hour or so, they moved on. So did I, only to get into another batch, all 2 to 4 pounds. I was throwing a small Hogy with a medium retrieve. Plucked a few out here and there. This pattern continued all week!”

Tammy reads the water better than any other fisher that I know. She can spot the flash of a fish or a ball of bait long before I ever do. And Tammy catches a ton of fish. She is so very consistent, whereas I am extremely streaky. I learn something from Tammy every time I talk with her.

But wait, there’s more: “Oh, did I mention the morning striped bass? I’m fishing Miss Amber (aka an amber colored Island X Hellfire 180 popper) with a slow retrieve and an occasional twitch. That produced some 28-inch beauties!” Thanks for this, Tammy!

Smith’s Point differs from Great Point in so many ways. Great Point is managed. Actually, Great Point is well-managed. The Trustees of Reservation are charged with maintaining the integrity of the reserve, and they do so in exemplary fashion. Rangers patrol the Great Point area, helping folks who might find themselves lost or stuck on the property. They work hard to keep the area in tip-top shape and to allow for their guests to enjoy the quiet of the beach. Guests must purchase a pass in order to venture out onto Great Point, but it’s the best money spent on Nantucket.

Smith’s Point requires a beach driving permit from the Town. After that, it’s the wild west. You’re on your own out there, folks. I drove slowly, scoping out the beach structure, thinking about what spots might hold striped bass. The fishing is great on that outside edge in the fall. And wow, the beach has certainly changed a

lot from last year. Access to the tip of Smith’s Point was only possible from the north side. The deep channel between Smith’s Point and Tuckernuck was churning with the water of an incoming moon tide.

Winter storms had narrowed the beach considerably on the southern edge. Oh no: the beach is changing! What to do? Take a deep breath, everybody, and know that Smith’s Point is always changing. Proof? You want proof? Well, let’s climb into the way-back machine and set the dial for mid-September of 1961. At that time, Hurricane Esther whacked Nantucket hard and Esther’s Island was born (approximately two weeks after I was born. Coincidence?) And then some 20 years later, everything changed again. The shifting sands on the weird west end reconnected the renegade spit of sand with Nantucket proper and Esther’s Island was no more. Yeah, things are strange on that side of the two Long Pond bridges.

Back to the present day... I saw a familiar truck stopped on the north side of Smith’s Point as I tried to find the proper access route. My friend and fellow beach fishing guide Dan Holmes was setting up with a client to fish for sharks. They were already hooked up on their first fish in the short time that it took me to drive over to them. Dan knows his stuff and always has his clients in position to catch those toothy critters. His client that morning was John from Leominster, MA. John was planted on the beach, working the shark to the beach under Dan’s watchful eye. It took about fifteen minutes for John and Dan to land their catch, a brown shark that I estimated to be just shy of six feet long. Dan moved expertly, safely unhooking the shark, allowing John a moment for some great pictures and then releasing the shark back into the Madaket waters. I’m not a shark fisherman but it was great to see the entire process. Dan is truly expert level with such things.

I concluded my visit to the west side, driving up and over the main entry / exit spot just in time to avoid a flood of vehicles heading to the beach. Smith’s Point is a wonderful spot for a beach day, no doubt. I loved to see so many folks heading out to enjoy that side of Nantucket.

As for me, I’ll remain an east side guy. Until I need to find that one big striper for the Inshore Classic fall fishing tournament, of course. And I’ll always be glad to have friends like Tammy King and Dan Holmes: the kind of friends you can count on regardless of your comfort zone.

Staff at ACK Natural are meticulously trained. “Front-of-the-house and back-of-thehouse are different,” Doug says. “Frontof-the-house trains on compliance and the product. Everyone gets an ‘employee bundle’ once a week, and we meet twice a week to go over flavor profiles and to consult on reactions to the products they’ve consumed. We shoot for at least two hours a month of ‘budtender training’.”

Everything at ACK Natural happens under one roof. “Our space is specifically designed to grow high-quality cannabis. “We grow in rock wool, not on soil. Rockwool is tested prior to use to ensure that there are no pesticides or heavy metals, which is not really possible with soil.”

As advanced as Doug’s system is, it is all controlled from one man’s iPhone. James Briard, head of cultivation, can control every aspect of the operation—fine tuning all the essential elements from heat to hydration, humidity, light, and just about everything else. And due to Federal law, every plant and every drop of extract must be tested on-island. “We do everything on-site.

Doug and his team do things a little bit differently than the rest of the industry, especially when it comes to edibles and concentrates. “We do what’s called full-spectrum oil. Our products contain all of the plant’s cannabinoids versus a distillate, where most of the cannabinoids are stripped away.” The flavor is a bit different: much grassier and earthier than other producers. But the effects speak for themselves. It lasts longer.

“The ‘entourage effect’ is a possible explanation,” says cannabis educator and consultant, Emma Chasen. The full array of compounds will work synergistically to produce a more enriched experience for the user. “All of the compounds within cannabis matrix work together to produce the overall experience. Terpenes, flavonoids, and minor cannabinoids influence the way the body processes and responds to major cannabinoids.”

Nothing good ever comes without a rub, and ACK Natural has found a natural way to counter some of them. “We call it our pest mitigation system,” Doug says.

Another exciting partnership involving Cisco Brewers led to the creation of a new libation. “I’ve known Stu for 20 years and I don’t even know how to say his last name,” joked Leighton. Look for the Lobster Flag

onto Almanack Pond Road. Continue on Almanack Pond Road for 0.8 miles, and the dirt parking lot is on the right. The entrance to the Stump Pond trails is across the road from where you will park. The trail entrance is marked by a new Nantucket Land Bank Sign for “Stump Pond Reserve,” which highlights proper trail use (please read it before you set out).

The single-track trail starts off from there in the red maple and tupelo swamp woodland. There are boardwalks over the wet areas. These boardwalks are great, but it was hysterical to me when my dog was afraid to traverse it. She behaved like she thought there was a troll beneath! Boardwalks like these keep your feet dry, but they also protect the path from too much foot traffic. This wet understory is full of flora and fauna that we don’t want to trample. Wetlands are especially vulnerable to foot traffic. Cinnamon ferns line either side of the board walks giving a Jurassic Park vibe. This time of year the area can be a tad buggy (it is a pond surrounded by marsh), but walking in a forested landscape is a reprieve from the hot summer sun these dog days of summer.

The forest trail meanders along the south part of Stump Pond, only intersecting with the pond in a few spots. The hardwood forest surrounding Stump Pond contains some very old trees, including several American beeches and American hollies that are at least a century old. Examples of other tree species found on the property include black tupelo, shadbush, black and white oak, mockernut hickory, and sassafras.

The rolling trail has some topography, and there are some good vista points. There are overlooks of Stump Pond itself and other high points. Using the ACKTrails app, you can follow the Stump Pond trail loop and read the highlights along the trail.

Stump Pond itself was created in the early 1900s for the cranberry production at Windswept Bog. The area that is now the pond was once a red maple swamp. The swamp was clear-cut in order to channel the flow of water. The pond got its name because when the water was low (i.e. when the water was diverted to the bogs) the stumps of the old trees were visible.

Since the Nantucket Conservation Foundation halted bog production, the water level in Stump Pond has remained stable and the stumps generally aren’t visible. The lack of precipitation of late has caused the water to draw down a bit making some stumps visible.

According to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation website: “Pockets of red maple swamp occur throughout the hardwood forest in low lying areas containing standing water. Growing below the tree canopy and forming another vertical layer in the forest are shrubs such as highbush blueberry, northern arrowwood, swamp azalea, and sheep laurel. Below these is a third layer of flowering plants and ferns, including wintergreen, whorled loosestrife, trailing arbutus and cinnamon fern.”

The Stump Pond trails are a bit off the beaten path, which is great when you want to be alone with your thoughts or listen to a podcast and not be bothered by others. Over the past several months, I have travelled the Stump Pond trail many times, and I only ever see a handful of people and dogs and some bikers.

If you want to further extend your adventure in this area, you have many options. You can walk further in and around the Windswept Bogs themselves. Alternatively, you can add on the Norwood Farm property. Norwood Farm is the result of a joint purchase of 207 acres between the Nantucket Land Bank and the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. The property consists of hills and valleys formed by terminal moraine deposits during the last glaciation. Most of the lowlying areas are wetlands, which are isolated or connected by intermittent streams. The property is located on the northern edge of over 6,700 acres making up the Middle Moors. With all of this land and trail connection, there are endless possibilities for continuing your Nantucket hiking adventure.

NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow.

•Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock.
