WHAT TO DO AFTER A LOVED ONE PASSES

W

hat should you do after a family member or friend passes away? Look for the person’s Will, Trust, if any, assets and bills. Wills and Trusts assist in managing the Decedent’s assets, obligations and affairs, by providing a plan for your estate after you pass away. A person who is named an executor will need to bring to an attorney the original Will. You should also make separate notes on the family members who survived a person. A person may have provided for the ownership of a home or bank account by having the home or bank account jointly owned. Life insurance policies and investments with beneficiaries tell you who those assets will go to after a person passes away. To probate a Will with the Surrogate’s Court in New York, you will need the original Will, death certificate, petition and family tree at minimum. The information about a person’s assets and bills will be needed.

The estate will need a tax identification number, decedent’s social security number and Court authorization to open an estate account. After a petition to probate is granted, the Court will issue letters testamentary and a Decree that authorizes the person to act on behalf of the Decedent. You will need information about all assets whether owned individually, jointly or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or investments for the Inventory to file with the Court. To close a probate estate, an executor will need to account to beneficiaries of the estate and obtain releases from the beneficiaries if everyone is in agreement. Please contact me if a loved one passes away. It will be my pleasure to help.— John A. Fantauzzi, Esq.

ummer in New York is in full swing and there is no shortage of great opportunities for us upstate New Yorkers to enjoy our own backyard. The 4th of July has flown behind us and the sultry days of backyard bonfires, campsite gatherings, and outdoor entertainment are here for us to enjoy. People come from all over the world to be where we live this time of the year. Our majestic lakes, long winding rivers, breathtaking mountaintops and cultural sophistication draw tourist from across the globe. Lucky for us, we live here. Culture comes in many forms here, it’s not just art or the track; our agriculture and farming background is what built the Capital District, our backbone. Years ago the rivers and lakes served as transportation for goods. The soil is fertile and the growing season produces an abundance of local produce and farm raised meats. 2014 marks the 173rd year for The Saratoga County Fair- Time to celebrate our agricultural background alongside our futuristic growth - the Saratoga County Fair is the culmination of our farmers, craftsmen, local businesses, futuristic tech companies and residents. For the residents and visitors’ to the area, it’s a time to relax, mingle & enjoy. Bring the children,

the grandchildren and entire family to marvel at the rides, the animals, the exhibits, the diverse food and the entertainment. For the team of The Saratoga County Fair that pulls it together, it represents a full year of dedication to excellence. Every exhibitor, every act, every kids ride is carefully planned and placed to give you, the visitor, the best experience possible. General Manager Jeff Townsend approached us last year about being a corporate sponsor and bringing blues guitarist Rhett Tyler into the venue. Jeff has a discerning ear for great music and saw some of our posts on Facebook regarding our friendship with Rhett Tyler. Ha! This is where it gets good. Besides being GM for the Saratoga County Fair Jeff is an experienced soundman. Jeff had worked with Rhett in the past and jumped at the chance to run the console for this show. With that said, we are honored to be a part of this year’s event and it is our profound pleasure to sponsor Rhett Tyler and Early Warning, trust me on this one, these three guys will stun you leave you begging for more. Rhett Tyler and Early Warning represent Local Talent at its best. We look forward to seeing you at this show and please stop by our tent to say hello. You never know who might show up!

THE TRUTH ABOUT PORTION SIZES!

S

hould we eat everything on our plates? It’s no secret that people are larger today than ever before. Waistlines have expanded over the last forty years and studies show that portion sizes have grown as well.

Now that you know portion sizes today are far larger than you really need, what are you going to do the next time you go out to eat? Try the following 3 tips and watch as your waist begins to slim and your confidence soars.

TRIM-DOWN TIP #1: Re-program Your Mind

Researchers from New York University found that average portion sizes started to grow in the 1970’s, rising quickly in the 1980’s—and this phenomenon hasn’t shown signs of slowing. Check out these eye-opening figures, provided by the National Institutes of Health:

I’m sure your parents did a great job by teaching you to “clean your plate.” The problem now lies in the fact that your plate is usually loaded with more than 3 times the calories that you really need. So what’s the solution?

• Today’s 6-inch bagel has 350 calories. This is 210 more calories than a 3-inch bagel 20 years ago.

Eating everything on the plate is probably a habit now, but it is one that you can break. Focus on how you feel halfway through your meal. Are you full? If you are beginning to feel full then stop eating. Don’t worry, it’s ok to leave food on your plate!

• Today’s 5 ounce muffin has 500 calories. This is 310 calories more than muffin 20 years ago. • Today, a large cookie has about 275 calories. This is 220 more calories more than a cookie 20 years ago. • Today, a 3 cup chicken Caesar salad has 790 calories. This is 400 more calories more than Caesar salads 20 years ago. Keep in mind that the health experts all agree on one thing: Obesity is on the rise because people eat too many calories and do not exercise enough. Portion control is a very important factor for losing weight, but to attain a slim and healthy physique exercise is also a must. With over 60 years of combined experience Martha and I ARE your local fitness experts! We are here to get you started on an exercise program that will change your life and shape forever.

TRIM-DOWN TIP #2: Slow Down I know that this is a tough one—so bear with me. These days we are in such a hurry, we rush to work, rush to lunch, rush through errands and then rush home. So it is no wonder that food consumption is no exception. Most meals are devoured before your stomach has the chance to let you know that it is full. Eat your next meal slower than usual. Chew each bite thoroughly, engage in conversation and pay attention for signs that you may be getting full. Once you realize that you are full, stop eating.

TRIM-DOWN TIP #3: Go Halfsies I understand that it may be very difficult for you to leave food on your plate, even though your mother isn’t looking over your shoulder, and even if you eat slowly. No problem—you just need to do some strategic planning. The next time you go out to eat do one of the following two options. 1. Share an entrée with a friend and order a small salad or soup to start your meal. This will cut your calories down dramatically, while still giving you the satisfaction of clearing your plate. 2. If sharing isn’t an option then ask your waiter to bring a to-go box along with your order. As soon as the food is placed in front of you put half of it into the to-go box. You are now left with a reasonable portion and even have your next meal taken care of. Getting you into great shape is our passion— it’s a job that we don’t take lightly. Allow us, your local experts, to get you fit and strong the safe, healthy way. Call or email today to set up our consultation. Let’s do this! —GINA SABATINI

FACTS ABOUT SPORTS EYEWEAR

H

ospital emergency rooms treat more than 40,000 eye injuries every year that are sports related. Many eye injuries come from pokes and jabs by fingers and elbows, particularly in games where players are in close contact with one another. Basketball has an extremely high rate of eye injury, but even non-contact sports, such as swimming, can present inherent dangers to the eyes. Wearing protective eyewear for sports pays off in several ways: the risk of eye damage is reduced and the player’s performance is enhanced by the ability to see better. Much like bike helmets, sports glasses are an accepted part of life. • Sports glasses are made in a variety of shapes and sizes. Lenses are usually made of polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is impact resistant and has built-in ultraviolet protection, which is valuable for outdoor sports. • Photochromic lenses are also a good option. These lenses are clear indoors and change automatically to a medium or dark sunglass-shade outdoors, depending on the intensity of sunlight. Photochromic lenses are terrific for golf where you move frequently from bright sunlight to shade during the course of a round. They also work great for any outdoor sport on days when it’s partly sunny, partly cloudy. • Most sport frames can accommodate both prescription and nonprescription lenses. Some sports styles are contoured, wrapping slightly around the face. Contact lens

wearers especially benefit from the wraparound style, as it helps keep out wind and dust. • Sport goggles must be properly fitted to the individual wearer. This is particularly important with children because the normal temptation is to purchase a larger goggle than is needed so the youngster has “room to grow.” Some growing room is acceptable, but if the frames are too large and don’t fit properly, the amount of protection they provide will be compromised. I encourage you to review the fit of your child’s sport goggles each year to ensure they are still providing proper protection. Make sure the padding inside the sides of the goggle rests flush with the face and the eyes are centered both horizontally and vertically in the lens area. Never use “dress” eyeglasses during sports. They are not made to the same protective standards as safety eyewear and will probably not hold up under impact. Eyeglass lenses that are not safety-rated could shatter causing serious eye injuries.

Finally, see your optician for additional advice about the best frames and lenses for your particular sport. Your optician’s help in frame selection is critical because the proper fit of sports eyewear is very important for both safety and comfort.

A GIFT FOR YOUR YOUNG CHILD

“Without a sound they all appeared. The fairies danced, they peeked and peered. They stepped together two by two as playful fairies often do.” or, how about this: “Fancy flutter butterfly, from where did you appear? To suddenly relax your wings now sensing what is near. Butterflies unfold your wings and scatter to the sky. Lightly dance across the air to pass each other by.” or maybe this: “One sunny day I met ten bunnies they were hopping right along The first one said come follow me we’re dancing to this song. The second bunny had me hopping quickly on one side. Then bunny number three said let’s all scurry off to hide.” and then there’s this: “As the toys were waiting inside of Santa’s sack, To slide down many chimney’s upon old Santa’s back. Something must have happened because the sack began to shake, Maybe the brand new jack-in-box popped up by some mistake.”

These lines are taken from some of my very creative, completely motivating movement poems for young children. They encourage wonderful movement through intriguing dance story. My classes for 4-6 year olds are structured in a way that appeals to the vivid imagination of this age group. Certainly we explore dance placement, lift and structure. Yes, we experience floor work steps that develop movement options in lateral as well as forward and backward direction. We most certainly do learn technique through fun, age appropriate choreography. But it’s through creative improvisation that we meld all that we learn. My creative movement classes for 4-6 year olds are a developmental gift for young children. I am offering a free, three week dance session for this age group so that your youngster can experience what I do. They may take one, two or all three classes for free. These classes will be offered on the three consecutive Thursdays of August 14, August 21 and August 28 from 5:306:15 pm at the Grange Hall on Pashley Road in Glenville. Moms, I have an open observation policy so that you can experience class too. Please call me at the number listed below to enroll or for more information.

WINDOWS 8 IS GETTING A BAD RAP!!

WOMEN MUST KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SOCIAL SECURITY

T

here is so much negative talk about Windows 8. Yes it’s geared towards touch screen users and apps...but you don’t have to be burdened with these extreme changes from Windows 7. Because of so many complaints, Microsoft issued an update , Win 8.1, to correct some of the dislikes. Win 8.1 is available free to all Win 8 users. 8.1 puts back the beloved start button and allows you to boot right to your desktop like in the past. There is also a conversion that can be put on to make Win 8 look and work very similar to Win 7. So if you are buying a new PC..really don’t worry about Win 8, we can make it be user friendly like Win 7.

I have been using Win 8 now for several months. And believe me, I don’t like changes!! But with the 8.1 update and the conversion my techs put on for me, I rarely have any problems finding my way around. I must say, it is a stable operating system and I have had no problems at all with its performance. The cost of Windows 7 machines has doubled in the past few months...but if you are really unhappy with your Win 8 machine, we can always put the machine back to Win 7 for you for about $200.

WE HAVE NEW AND REFURBISHED WIN 7 & WIN 8 COMPUTERS STARTING AT $199. We offer fast friendly service! Also, we are local, and can help you with any questions you have.

A NEW CONCEPT FOR GARDEN ART IN “YOUR HOMETOWNE”

I

’ve always had a fancy for pretty vintage dishes and colored “candy-like” glassware. Two years ago, while preparing for a much needed tag sale, I realized I had collected boxes and boxes of these little darlings and they were all packed away hidden in the cellar with no way to display their beauty & uniqueness. I can’t sell all these beautiful things in a tag sale so I decided it was time to get creative...I started making flowers, my family & friends were very supportive & before I knew it, I had to turn our garage into my glass workshop...”Charming Glass Treasures” was born! It’s been two seasons now and I’m proud to say that I’m selling locally in three shops and from my home when I’m designing & creating. I have expanded my line to include flowers, garden & solar totems, bird feeders & baths, candle pedestals & more. My items are designed for the Elegant English, Country Cottage, Shabby

Chic & Whimsical Gardens plus any custom orders. I have to add that my only hurdle was the glue! After a solid month of trial & error I finally got it right and that’s what holds my whole business together! My pretty dishes are out of their boxes & ready to be enjoyed by all. When my summer flowers go into hibernation in the fall, I get busy with my other passion - Lily’s Doll Clothes Line designing & sewing doll clothes for the little girls in “Your Hometowne”.

E

veryone needs to be aware of the financial resources they will have available in retirement. But if you’re a woman, you must be particularly diligent, for a variety of reasons. For one thing, women often take time off from their careers to care for children and older parents, so they may accumulate less money in employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k) plans. Additionally, women still tend to live several years longer than men. Clearly, then, you need to get the most you can from Social Security. To do so, you will need to consider at least three key factors: Age — You can start taking retirement benefits as early as 62, but your benefits may be reduced by up to 30% unless you wait until your “full retirement age,” which is likely 66 or 67. If you delay taking benefits until 70, your monthly benefits may be up to a third larger than if you started collecting Social Security at your full retirement age. You’ll need to weigh a variety of factors — such as family longevity, income from employer-sponsored retirement plans and your anticipated financial needs — in determining when you should start taking Social Security. Employment — If you work while receiving Social Security benefits before you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn over an annual limit, which generally increases each year. In the year you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $3 you earn over the limit before your birthday. But once you reach full retirement age, your benefits will no longer be adjusted for earned income.

Marital status — As a spouse, you can generally receive Social Security payments based on your own earnings record or collect a spousal benefit of up to 50% of your husband’s Social Security benefit. The benefit will be reduced if you start taking it before your full retirement age. To start collecting Social Security spousal benefits, you must be at least 62 years old and your husband must also have filed for his own benefits. If you’re divorced, and you’re not currently married, you can generally receive benefits on your ex-husband’s Social Security record, as long as you meet certain conditions. (For example, you had to have been married to your ex-husband for at least 10 years.) No matter how much Social Security you ultimately receive, it’s almost certainly not going to be enough to provide all the income you’ll need. So during your working years, try to contribute as much as you can, for as long as you can, to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At the same time, look for other investment opportunities. When you reach retirement, create a withdrawal strategy that allows you to stretch out the income you receive from your investments for as long as you can. By saving and investing as much as possible during your working years, maximizing your Social Security payments and carefully managing your financial assets when you’re retired, you can help improve your chances of enjoying the retirement lifestyle you deserve. TRASH TALK AND KEEPING YOUR COOL

A

comedian once said, “This area has 2 seasons, winter and July 11th”. Time to rejoice - it’s almost July 11th!!! Summertime is here sunshine and great times with friends mixed drinks on the patio, shrimp on the barbie. OK, so maybe in this economy it’s warm beer in paper cups and leftover Subway in the driveway, but we’ll take it (for more about taking things, read on!). Let’s focus on the positive: it is finally nice out. But is it too warm? Better fire up the air conditioning uh-oh! AC on the fritz? ARGH!!! Hey it lasted a whole year, that’s practically infinity for a modern appliance these days; in fact it is an antique at this point. What to do about properly disposing of the bad appliance? Well, first some information: Older air conditioners, central air condensers, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers, water fountains and water coolers all contain refrigerants (Freon) like R-12 and R-22. It is believed that these substances are part of the reason for the deletion of the ozone layer and other problems in the environment. Even modern refrigerants are not the greatest but they are vast improvements over the older technology. Don’t let just anyone take these away for you; it’s time to call Scrapster. We are fully EPA608 certified for the responsible reclaiming of all types of refrigerants. Scrapster will remove the items

from exactly where they are located-you don’t need to do a thing. We bring the unit back to our facility where we process them, pulling out the refrigerant with our recovery equipment and then shipping it out to be fully recycled by our supplier. We then take apart the appliance and separate and recycle all the metal components such as motors, wire, the radiators and sealed unit compressors. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. Additionally we are a New York State DEC approved location for business or personal electronics recycling. You deal directly with us. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. “Don’t Worry We Can Take It!”

DECORATING TIPS FROM THE SPECKLED HEN

To start, cut a few sheets of waxed paper to the size of a standard piece of printer paper. Next, find a smooth, light colored piece of unfinished wood. An old board works

If you notice spots that haven’t transferred, rub it more with the credit card.

I’m always looking for interesting – yet easy and inexpensive projects to “play” with. This month I’m going to teach you how to transfer a picture onto a piece of wood. Then, find a high resolution image – it can be of anything: flowers, vegetables, animals, etc. Once you have an image that you like, put a sheet of the waxed paper into your printer and click print. If your picture has words on it, you’ll have to

reverse it first. This can be done using the photo program on your computer (if you’re not sure how to do this “Google it”). Gently guide the waxed paper as it comes out of the printer. You have to be careful it doesn’t smear. Once printed, put your image exactly where you want it on the wood - don’t move it or it will smudge. While holding the paper tight to the

MORTENSEN MOTORSPORTS

By Ron Szczerba

T

he Your Hometowne sponsored #1M driven by Mark Mortensen has had a busy racing season so far attempting to race two nights a week with one car which is no easy feat. The maintenance on the car needs to be done after each race not to mention all of the dirt having to be washed off the entire car with all of the body panels having to be removed in order to do it properly. The maintenance that needs to be done before each race includes measuring the height of the race car from a level surface up to the bottom of the frame rails. Every nut and bolt on the car also needs to be checked to make sure that it is still tight and the car goes on a set of four scales, one under every wheel, to get weighed which is how the handling of the race car gets adjusted. That is just a short list of what needs to be done before and after a race but the list is pretty long and requires a lot of time and patience as you have to be very meticulous with everything that you do to make sure that it is done properly. Mark has been struggling with the setup of the race car at Fon-

Photo by Bill McGaffin da same as he was last year but at Glen Ridge the car is working much better and Mark’s finishes in the last four weeks have been two consecutive second place finishes on May 25 and June 1 along with a sixth and an eighth place finish the other two weeks. With the good finishes comes a good place in the point standings as well with Mark currently third in points at Glen Ridge just two points out of second place! We couldn’t do this without the help of our sponsors which car owner Bonnie Mortensen would like to thank for everything they do for us. Sponsors on the #1M for 2014 include: Jumpin’ Jack’s Drive-In, Benjamin Moore Paints, Mortensen Electric, Socha Plaza, Countryside Stove & Chimney, 1st National Bank of Scotia, Broadalbin Manufacturing, Your Hometowne Paper, Chris Kelley Carpentry of Galway, Schenectady Unit Parts NAPA, Howard Mack, Esquire, Minick Kitchen of Scotia, Bill McGaffin Photography, Bill Terry, Iwinski Excavation, Gabriele’s Supermarket of Scotia, Meridian

The picture attached with this story is of Mark’s race car on display at the Fonda Speedway on Benjamin Moore Paints Night at the track a few weeks ago. Mark’s step father Ron Szczerba works at the Benjamin Moore Paint factory in Johnstown, NY as a lab technician and some of the employees and their families of the Johnstown, NY plant were able to attend the races that evening. Anyone who wanted to sit in the race car that night was able to do so and there were t-shirts given away along with autographed pictures of the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M and pencils too! The kids also got their pictures taken by the race car as well and had their shirts signed by Mark!

SAM SPEAKS...

BY SAM CAPUANO

G

WORKING FOR A LIVING

rowing up, the end of the school year meant many things for many people. Swimming pools were always sought out, of course. In Charlton, we had the Charvale Pool. Even closer to me, on Imperial Lane, we were fortunate enough to have my neighbor Dale Goodknight. The Goodknights had one of the rare (for the 1970’s anyway) in ground pools. Upon turning 16, summer meant something different in my house, as my father said, “Time to get a job.” Since it did not seem as though it was negotiable, this innocent teen hit the job market. But, where to look? In those years, the best options were the plethora of fast food chain restaurants in the Mayfair area. While I try (usually unsuccessfully) not to be one of those curmudgeons who frown upon the current generation’s ways, it seems as though one big difference is teens no longer make up the majority of these fast food work force as before. The biggest reasons seem to be 1) They refuse to wear the company uniforms, and 2) They wouldn’t be caught dead working there in case one of their wise acre friends show up. Not that we didn’t feel the same way then, we just didn’t have the choice. At any rate, in those days, the business at which we all wanted to work was the one with the golden arches. The East Glenville McDonald’s had a reputation for treating their workers well, and paying a decent wage, too. Alas, everyone knew it, and when I applied there I found out there was a huge waiting list. So, I looked just down the street at Ponderosa Steak House (on the site at which there is currently a Sunmark Credit Union branch office.) The good news was I was hired on the spot. It was also the bad news. I was unaware they had a much earned reputation for treating employees poorly. While minimum wage had just made the huge leap from $2.65 to $2.90 (!), that news apparently never reached Ponderosa’s corporate offices. We were also adorned in these horrible uniforms. Orange striped shirts, brown polyester pants with a matching beret. (Hmmm, maybe this modern uniform-hating generation is smarter than I thought.) Not quite a military uniform, although our bosses sure had a drill sergeant mentality.

I often had the unenviable task of opening up on the weekends. This included washing the previous night’s filth off the floor and cleaning the rest rooms. Now, Ponderosa also had a reputation for attracting a somewhat older crowd. This would perhaps explain the several occasions in which I would find dentures in the rest room some poor soul had left the night before. I am guessing all they would be able to eat for breakfast that day was oatmeal. Then there was the worse task of all: setting up the salad bar. It wasn’t just the look of the brown lettuce or mushy tomatoes. It was the giant cans of three bean salad. The horrible smell of that at 7:00 in the morning was matched by only the wooshing plop sound it made as to was being emptied into the container. Not unlike wet cat food going into a dish. There were several other (obviously) better choices to work in Mayfair during that time. Many friends worked at Flavorland. In the pre-Glenville Queen and Burnt Hills Cafe era, this was the best local place for breakfast. Back in these days of Saturday afternoon high school football, those of us on the Burnt Hills team would eat there on Game Day mornings. Given our appetites, I would doubt there was any food left after we left. Flavorland was similar to the nearby Friendly’s, and many teens worked there as well. When Flavorland shut its doors years later, Friendly’s took over, giving the area two such restaurants within walking distance for awhile, something I never quite understood.

Maine is the only state in the United States whose name is just one syllable.

Some friends worked at Pizza Hut. They hated the fact many of us would head over there after our shifts were over late at night to order a few pies. With New York’s then-drinking age of 18 in force, we could also order pitchers of beer. Pizza Hut tried to limit our consumption by only offering Genesee. Not surprisingly, we would get more than a little obnoxious after a few pitchers of this golden nectar, and make fun of our buddies employed there. Which clearly might explain reason #2 noted above as to why teens no longer work at places such as this. Oh, well, nice work if you can get it. ‘Til next time, keep on smilin’.

See you next month, in the mean time you can catch up with my blogs at http://samspeaks21.blogspot.com

AND AWAY WE GO....HAPPY SUMMER!

E

22 l Your Hometowne l July 2014

As with every season, we find ourselves changing. Acclimating to our new surroundings. Our clothes change to light and bright summer colors. We make and eat dinner outside. Friends visit and stop over for a “cold one” and some good old conversation under the apple tree. I have never realized that a new lounger chair in your yard can make a difference in your day. When I lay there in the warm sun, the cool breezes rustle the leaves of the tree. The animals that call my backyard home talk amongst themselves in a secret language. A few chirps, a few squeaks, a robust caw and a beautiful singsong tune. If I could only stay in this moment forever. Not only to enjoy my new back yard living room but to just be here for a moment longer. With the season I am changing. My life is in one of those moments that you feel there is a line drawn in the sand. You want to jump over it and yet just the thought makes you want to stay surely footed where you stand. It is not that the other side looks dismal, it is actually quite bright

For now I will spend my time here, in my lounge chair, under my apple tree. The breeze will caress my face and the birds will sing their sing-song melody just for me. It all feel right in my world, as it should. Remember the past is not gone it is what brought you here to this moment. There will be many lines drawn in the sand and each and every time we will jump, looking back and realizing how great it was and then looking forward to the all wonderful possibilities. These possibilities will be your great memories to look back on. As always, I wish you peace, joy and many moments to look back and forward to.

As always, I wish you peace, joy and plenty of free warm weather! Pattie Rakvica idriveaware@gmail.com

and alluring. Calling you to a life you have always dreamed of and deserve. Right here and now is wonderful and yet fleeting. I feel my son inch away as he becomes a man and ventures out more on his own. Oh, how I want to stay right here in this moment, right here under this old apple tree. Having those bittersweet feelings of letting go and still knowing it is good and right to do so. I am drawn to both sides of that line in the sand. Both of them calling me to surrender. Wishing I could cut myself in two and take both with me on my journey. As I lay here a few more minutes, the birds call to each other in a melody that lets me know it is all going to be alright. It is the season and I will be ready to make that leap across. When I do, I will not be leaving what I had, I will be looking forward to the next line in the sand. Maybe then it will come easier, or maybe not. I will however, stand surely footed right at that moment, taking a look back and then and only then will I leap once again.

Hometowne Humanitarians

S

everal years ago an idea was shared in the rooms of the Glenville Rotary; from that idea was born the Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run! The idea germinated into a committee of runners who dedicated their time, energy and passion to plan and orchestrate this inaugural event; the same year, month and day Hurricane Irene came to out town; August 28th, 2011. Having to postpone the event (because the trail was a little too wet and muddy!), the event was rescheduled 10 days later with over 120 runners and community sponsors measuring a bakers dozen. It was a successful effort, a wonderful event beyond our imagination. The spirit of our success was infectious, so we immediately began planning for the second annual event with the captivating thought that maybe we were, in fact, starting an annual Rotarian tradition, much like our annual golf outing, dictionary project and ziti dinner. Two years since, we are now celebrating our 4th Annual Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run which will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 9:00am at the infamous Indian Meadows Park in Glenville. This event has been well-received by the runners because the course winds its way through woods and meadows (with some mild elevation changes) and, because it is one of the few trail runs in the capital region. So ,besides having fun running on a great trail, why do we, as Rotarians, plan and orchestrate this event every year? Well, because we believe that every community

Service above Self needs volunteer support to make it a better place for families to live. Rotarians are notorious for giving their time and energy to the community and this is another example of that spirit, in the name of health and wellness. And each year, the Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run event raises money, from our wonderful sponsors and runner registration fees, to help us further our mission. This event dedicates a generous portion of its proceeds to a select community organization that is doing great work in the community, with remaining funds distributed for other local Rotary projects. The following organizations have received donations from the Glenville Rotary thus far from the Muddy Sneaker event; Shellstrong Foundation (Burnt Hills), Samaritan Counseling Center (Scotia) and the Ellis Hospital Breast Care Center (Schenectady). This year we have chosen Things of My Very Own Inc. (Scotia) to receive event proceeds. Things of my Very Own Inc is a hometown 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides impoverished children, who are victims of abuse and neglect, with crisis intervention services, transitional assistance and fundamental life skills development. For more extensive information about the organization, please go to: www.tomvo.org. So, we strongly encourage you to come out for this special event, whether you be a runner or spectator. We need your support each and every year!! If you have been with us since the beginning, thanks from the bottom of

yourhometowne@gmail.com l 518.265.1105

our hearts for your dedication and friendship. If you have been with us for one or two year's, we look to have you with us at future runs so that this event becomes as much of a tradition for you as it is becoming for the community. And, if you haven't come out yet, join us, it's not too late! You most certainly will be welcomed with open arms and you won't be disappointed. Many thanks! Details and other information about registration and the Muddy Sneaker event details can be accessed as follows: www.glenvillerotary.org Things of my Very Own Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides impoverished children who are victims of abuse and neglect, with crisis intervention services. We provide stability while promoting success. Programs Our programs reintroduce children to fundamental life skills needed to develop into stable, confident individuals with healthy levels of self-confidence, and self-esteem. An emphasis is placed on building and maintaining healthy relationships as well as reducing the possibility of future victimization. While our goal is not to heal children, our organization strives to expose each child to enriching activities that identify individual talents and enhance development, thereby broadening opportunities. We coordinate with numerous experts throughout the community to assist us in achieving these goals. Program opportunities are available to children of all

ages and capabilities. Some examples of the programs we offer are listed below. • Structured play environments with expressive components for young children; • Team building classes and exercises; • Literacy Encouragement Programs; Transitional Assistance The transition out of an abusive situation is often sudden and unexpected. Rarely is a child able to return home to retrieve belongings prior to the move. TOMVO recognizes the need for children to have everything they need from the first moment on, and our goal is to provide children with things of their very own even when they are in an unfamiliar setting. Transitional assistance is available on a referral basis within four hours of contact. Packages vary by age, but generally include the following: • clothing • books • toiletries • school • toys supplies In addition to transitional assistance, TOMVO programs reintroduce children to fundamental life skills needed to develop into stable, confident individuals with healthy levels of self-confidence and self-esteem. An emphasis is placed on building and maintaining healthy relationships as well as reducing the possibility of future victimization. Yours in Rotary, The Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run Committee members

Spice up Your Summer with these Grilled Chicken Kabobs

The Hell-Yea Burger

If you enjoy spicy grilled chicken recipes then these chicken kabobs are just for you. Quick and Easy, Just thread boneless, skinless chicken on skewers with Spanish onion and Garofalo’s chorizo sausage before soaking them in a special spicy marinade recipe. This is not a “YEEOWW” sort of spicy hot, more of a nice spicy subtle finish... it’s just like having a mixed grill on a stick! When grilling chicken kabobs there’s always a tendency to over-cook them and dry them out. These don’t take very long at all, maybe 10-12 minutes at 550F, so check the internal temperature if you can and remove them when they breasts in half lengthwise, turn and cut into hit 160F. 16 similar sized chunks. Preheat your grill or load Mali’s Charcoal and allow it to reach 550F, oil the grates with vegetable oil or non-stick spray. When the grill reaches cooking temperature, load the kabobs and close the cover. After 5 or 6 minutes, gently “wiggle” them with your tongs to release them from the grill.

Grilling Season is in FULL SWING, We now offer Mali’s Gourmet Hardwood Charcoal I have been asked to re share a great burger recipe that Marie’s husband Paul came up with. It’s simple, quick and extremely popular. Since this month features my favorite cooking utensil, the Grill and Garofalo’s has been making some extra pulled pork for quick summertime backyard meals, do yourself a “flavor” and try this one out for a burger extraordinaire! Using Garofalo’s custom ground 6 oz burgers, fire up that grill and cook until medium rare, flip it and top it with a few slices of Garofalo’s own thick sliced bacon precooked to just short of crispy. Pile on Garofalo’s fresh pulled pork along with a couple slices of cheese – Garofalo’s has a great selection of cheeses that will allow you to go gourmet without the fuss. Finish grilling to your desired doneness, top it on a savory toasted Ciabatta roll or bun of your choosinganother option is to top with fried onion rings and dollop on some Chipotle Mayonnaise or your favorite condiment and dig in! This one is juicy and tasty Hell-Ya Burger- it’s sure to be a favorite all summer long! And it’s versatile, mix and match toppings, cheeses and rolls to suit your taste!

West Wind Acres is a pasture based farm. We raise chickens for meat and eggs, sheep, pigs, and cattle. Our animals are rotated through fresh pastures and wood lots through out the year, living naturally with no hormones, or antibiotics. Our cattle and sheep are fed 100% grass and hay. Pigs at West Wind Acres are able to decide if they would like to eat from the pastures and wood lots that they live in or if they prefer they are offered organic grain. Our Freedom Ranger meat chickens are moved to fresh pasture daily, they also are fed organic grain. Buying your meat from a local pasture based farm has many benefits including recycling your money into the local economy. Buying local keeps people in our community employed. Our farm is 100% transparent so our customers can see exactly how their food is grown and raised. Pasture raised meats are much healthier than their grocery store counterparts. The meat has less fat, cholesterol and calories, and more vitamins, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) Our meats can be purchased through our website for pick up at the farm, or delivery on the first Tuesday of the month to drop points throughout the Capital District. We also sell "Tasty Meats" CSA. CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Here are the basics of our CSA: A Farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Interested consumers purchase a “share” aka a “membership” or “subscription” and in return receive a box of meat each month. There are three sizes available: family size, regular size and single size. West Wind Acres CSA can be started at any point, the term is 12 months. This creates an arrangement that has benefits to both consumer and farmer here are just a few. Consumer: • Know how your food is raised and build a relationship with the farmer • Get exposed to new cuts of meat, learning different ways to cook • Enjoy local, healthy, nutrient dense tasty meats Farmer: • Receive payment earlier in the year to help cash flow • Have opportunity to get to know the people who eat their food • Ability to forecast demand It's a simple enough idea, but its impact has been profound. Tens of thousands of families have joined CSAs, and are now eating fresh, locally grown food and supporting their local economy at the same time. Give us a call or visit our website and treat yourself to the freshest, cleanest, humanely raised meat available to put on your dinner table.

SO, YOU’RE PLANNING TO SELL YOUR HOUSE…

A

nd you are planning on going the DIY route? Why not? Who needs to hire a professional anyway? Why would you waste all that money just to have someone put your house on the internet? It is still called the “world wide web” isn’t it? Anyone can use it! Well...here is a few things you may want to consider. CMA, PUD, PUD, HOA, pre-qualification vs. pre-approved, property condition disclosure, lead based paint disclosure, easements, home inspection, pest inspection, attorney approval, legally binding contract to sell what may be your largest investment, earnest money, escrow, and let us not forget STRANGERS! I know you know what strangers are but are you well versed in the rest of those terms, disclosures, processes, what applies to you, what doesn’t, what is your responsibility, liability? To YOU, your home is not just a structure on a piece of land. To YOU, it often symbolizes family, memories that make it ‘home’, a tree you planted when a loved one was born or a pet passed away, the bathroom that your father helped you remodel, the kitchen where you taught your children to cook, your lawn that you tended to meticulously.... And more than likely the largest investment you’ll ever make! You may want to consider an OBJECTIVE PERSPECTIVE. Hiring a professional REALTOR® provides you with a concerned, but objective, third party. As a professional REALTOR® it is my job to help you stay focused on both the emotional as well as the financial issues that are most important to you. Here are some other factors to consider. Of course there’s price, but what financing, terms and types? Will you include or exclude repairs? Furnishings? Appliances? Your grandmother’s chandelier hanging in the dining room? Date of possession? Additionally, the purchase/sale agreement should provide an appropriate time frame for the buyer to complete proper inspections, provide results, and present a mortgage commitment. As a professional REALTOR® I am a well versed, comfortable, and an experienced negotiator whose job is to PROTECT YOUR INTEREST!

Statistics show that a good portion of real estate sales are the result of a REALTOR’S® contacts. Maybe a previous client, a referral, friends, family member, a friend of a friend....a professional REALTOR® is ALWAYS working. We talk real estate, we network with other professionals, we tell everyone we meet who we are, what we do, and about the property we just listed! Now, let get back to the STRANGERS that until now (hopefully) you were not planning to invite into your home like they’re friends while your kids are doing their homework or playing quietly in their rooms, while you are running around hoping to get everything picked up before they arrive for their personal and private tour. What about that sounds like a good idea???? When you hire a professional REALTOR®, you do not have to post your personal phone number on the ‘world wide web’ next to your address and you don’t have to allow strangers off the street into your home! AS your REALTOR® I will take the calls, prescreen the caller, and accompany qualified prospects through your home while you continue on with your life. Here is an interesting fact: In 2011 “The founder of ForSaleByOwner.com Colby Sambrotto spent six months trying to sell his own New York City condo using his own on-line listings and classified adverts. But the DIY home selling guru eventually decided to turn the sale over to a professional. Not only did the broker set the price $150,000 higher than the original asking price, he went on to lure the elusive buyer Mr. Sambrotto’s self-help methods had failed to attract.

elp us keep history alive so we can help make the future of children and our rescue horses brighter and hopeful. We are reaching out to you with a very special invitation to be a part of our history by helping us save and renovate our historic barn so we can open The Call of The Dove Life Center. To celebrate our 15th year anniversary of receiving our first girl and horse into our Equine program, we are excited to give our valuable partners like you the chance to expand our reach to recover, renew, and restore more kids & families in “tough spots” and to provide more horses at-risk with a new job opportunity in equine assisted therapy than we currently do today. On the upper level of the barn there will be counseling rooms, life skills development programs held in the barn’s open timber room to better equip the kids for success and hopefully help to break the cycle of hurt and poverty that is their generational heritage. The barn’s open timber room will also be a place for the community to hold Bible studies and come together to celebrate. Due to the need to rebuild the walls of the barn, we now have an opportunity to build horse stalls on the barn’s lower level. This expansion of stalls would enable us to take in more four-legged friends who find themselves “jobless” due to age, injury or life circumstance helping them discover the Equine Assisted Counseling career that awaits them- their true made for more life purpose! You can help us meet our goal of opening The Call of The Dove Life Center this Fall by contributing to The Barn Project Faith Wall Campaign. We need to raise $70,000 by August 31st. We are pleased to announce your donation will supplement the gifts of $2,300 recently received by many of our family supporters! Out of a crumbling foundation, we will build a wall of faith! The Homestead is 202 years st-rong this year and Autumn Run Stables’ horses helping kids and kids helping horses ministry celebrated its’ 15th Birthday in April. So just as we do with the kids, families, and horses in our Equine Assisted Counseling program and specialty foster care home at the

farm, we choose to move out in

Our 202 year old piece of history faith, hope and love to rebuild the broken foundation the storms of life have produced. We will rebuild piece-by-piece to be stronger and more stable so we are ready to take on all that is to come. Out of the crumbled foundation, we will build a wall of faith and help our barn step into its’ new made for more purpose here at the homestead. Each stone removed from the barn’s crumbling foundation will be placed in a new “made for more” position in our wall of faith. Dedicate a stone and become part of our history. Your help today will provide a legacy of hope to the generation to follow.

Now taking Summer Consignments by Appointment

Therapist Renovating this barn will allow us to accommodate more kids, families, and horses in tough spots and become a community place to gather, which increases our current impact. Your generous contributions will give more kids, families and horses in tough spots the opportunity to receive the therapy, focused education, a loving environment, and healthy relationships they need in order to pursue healing. PLEDGE TO THE CALL OF THE DOVE LIFE CENTER TODAY! STAY TUNED with PAUL HILL

T

his past month has been rough, real rough. On June 14th my Dad peacefully passed away at 91 years of age after a long hard fought struggle with a myriad of medical issues that would have taken down most men his age. He quietly passed on his terms, at home, in his living room surrounded by family. His longevity and legacy is a credit to my Mom, a retired lifelong Registered Nurse and well-respected Vice President of Patient Services at Ellis Hospital. He relied on her intuitive understanding of his condition that kept him on a steady stream of doctor visits and the correct medications. Her unwavering bedside vigil with each hospital stay that grew more frequent over the past few years amazed all of us- My Dad was the recipient of unconditional love, compassion and dedication to a marriage that lasted 66 years. Thru the pain of the inevitable, two amazing things came into play. The first one happened during his last hospital visit, the prognosis for his ability to rebound “again”, with at least 10-

12 lengthy stays under his belt for recurring pneumonia was bleak and the decision to bring Hospice into the picture was made. It was Karma playing out as it always does, this time giving back. My Mom was an integral part of bringing Hospice as an option into Ellis Hospital when the program became available in our area and now our family, once again was to be a recipient of its good work. In January Hospice assisted my sister’s daughter Shelly and our family through the final stages of her courageous battle with cancer. I cannot say enough good things about the Community Hospice program and all they do to assist the family as a whole during difficult times. After my Dad had passed and arrangements were being discussed, the second “amazing thing” unfolded. We did not want his service as a Navy Veteran of WWII to be overlooked at any level so I contacted one of my Harley buddies, Ned Mead who ironically works at Ellis Hospital and is a member of a local chapter of a national

yourhometowne@gmail.com l 518.265.1105

organization called the Patriot Guard Riders, a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. They have one thing in common besides motorcycles. They have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security including Fallen Military Heroes, First Responders and Honorably Discharged Veterans. Their main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. After logging onto the website and filing the mission request form, I was immediately contacted and assured they would be proud to attend and posted the following mission online:

Paul E. Hill proudly served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1948. Achieving the rank of Gunners Mate 2nd Class he served in the Asia-Pacific campaign during the War and then postwar Mediterranean. He served aboard the LST-515, USS Crescent City (attack transport), USS Ibex IX-119 (tanker), LST-131, LCI-365, heavy cruiser USS Oregon City, USS Coral Sea.

As an LST, LCI driver Paul participated in the US Marine landings on Tinian and Saipan. The Patriot Guard Riders will be privileged to be there to show Honor, Dignity and Respect for the life and service of this WWII Hero. Rest in Eternal Peace - Paul E. Hill - you have been released from further service to your fellow man. The mission to honor my Dad was a touching moment as both sides of the cemetery entrance was lined with these Brothers of Honor holding Flags on mast at attention in full salute, we paused as one of the men piped our arrival with bosun whistle call. The men departed quietly after we passed leaving a single man off to the side standing guard at attention during the service. So moved by this show of respect, I have enrolled with them and will proudly participate on future missions- visit them online at http://pgrny.org/ In your honor I will stand by other Veterans in their time of need, I Love you Dad - Stay Tuned

What our customers say...

“Amanda and I closed on our first home yesterday and it couldn’t have been easier without the help of Margaret. Amanda and I had no idea how to even start looking for a home and Margaret helped us every step of the way, even when we ran into a few snags along the way she was always there to iron them out and make sure we were heading in the right direction! We couldn’t be more thankful or happier with the whole experience. We would definitely recommend Margaret from Old Orchard Real Estate to anyone who may be looking to buy or sell a home! Thanks again Margaret! S. Fura, Glenville, NY Call us for your no obligation conversation we look forward to it. “with Olde Orchard you have friends in the business”
