A message from “A little Madness in the Spring is wholesome even for the King” ~Emily Dickinson The Spring Season is called the Queen of Seasons. Mother Nature is as beautiful and charming as a Queen in her own ballroom. Like all Queens, Spring has many admirers. Poets like Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Keats and Kalidasa owed their inspiration to spring. Wordsworth found God, Keats found beauty and Shelley found love in Spring. Shakespeare found tongues in trees, sermons in stones, books in brooks and good in everything. Poets have danced in joy to see the various beauties of Spring which reveal in unmistakable terms that the earth is a beautiful gift bestowed upon us by Mother Nature. “Walk lightly in the spring; Mother Earth is pregnant” ~Native American Indian Proverb Male birds dressed up like courting princes dance and sing their way into the hearts of their chosen mates. Trees adorn themselves with new leaves creating safe havens for the nesting birds in their new homes. Nature presents to us a great variety of colors and smells and manifests her beauty in a thousand shapes. How delightful it is to observe the flowers; the rose, the lily, the daisy, the narcissus, the hyacinth and the marigold! What a feast for our senses!! Beautiful to look at, fragrant to smell and delicate to touch. The sun climbs higher every day, pouring its gold onto the snowclad peaks of mountains. Stars shine like a crown against velvet skies. Gentle winds blow casting out the harshness of winter replacing it with life-giving and nurturing warmth. Spring signifies life. “Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems” ~Rainer Maria Rilke Beauties of Spring, a feast for our eyes, a gladdening of our hearts; they purify our souls and deliver a spiritual message to those who are listening. They have an educative value to those
yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105
who listen. We learn that we cannot control everything, even the most beautiful flower will be shattered in a hail storm. We learn that versatility is why the world is so beautiful, from the Amazon Rain Forests to the North Pole, variety is the common thread. If you listen really close to nature you will learn to be more self-offering and uninhibited. We see trees in full bloom offering pollen to the bees and then fruit to man. What does it imply? Have you thought of it? Are they not offering us what they have voluntarily? Nature is a very selfless, benevolent giver. Nature is generous and abundant. There is absolutely no dearth of anything. What can we learn from this? That giving and offering are not only great qualities, they complete the circle of life. “Look deep into nature and you will understand everything” ~Albert Eintsein Beauties of Spring teach us many morals; truth, patience and forbearance. In Spring, a worried man finds peace; a seeker after truth finds truth; a philosopher, philosophy; a theist the presence of God; a lover of beauty, beauty; a poet, inspiration, and a painter, stimulus. I think if Mother Nature could ask for anything from man in return for her bounty it would be kindness. Not gratuitous kindness, caring kindness. Cheer when someone else’s child hit’s the ball. Hold the door for that senior citizen struggling with bags. Praise your co-worker for a job well done. Say please and thank you, all the time. Most importantly, smile at people. If you are not very good at it, practice. Yes practice. Why did the Mona Lisa become one of the most famous paintings of all times? Because of her smile. Smiling is powerful. One smile can change someone’s day for the better, maybe even their life. “The funny thing about smiles; just when you think you may be out of smiles completely, someone will give you one back” ~Me Peace,

How Can You Meet Your Short-term Financial Goals? Why do you invest? If you’re like most people, you’d probably say that, among other things, you want to retire comfortably. Obviously, that’s a worthy long-term goal, requiring long-term investing. But as you journey through life, you’ll also have short-term goals, such as buying a second home, remodeling your kitchen or taking a much-needed vacation. Will you need to invest differently for these goals than you would for the longterm ones? To answer that question, let’s first look at how you might invest to achieve your longer-term goals. For these goals, the key investment ingredient is growth – quite simply, you want your money to grow as much as possible over time. Consequently, you will likely want a good percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks and other stock-based investments, to fund your 401(k), IRA or other accounts. However, the flip side of growth is risk. Stocks and stock-based investments will always fluctuate in value – which means you could lose some, or even all, of your principal. Hopefully, though, by putting time on your side – that is, by holding your growth-oriented investments for decades – you can overcome the inevitable shortterm price drops. In short, when investing for long-term goals, you’re seeking significant growth and, in doing so, you’ll have to accept some degree of investment risk. But when you’re after short-term goals, the formula is somewhat different: You don’t need maximum growth potential as much as you need to be reasonably confident that a certain amount of money will be there for you at a certain time. You may want to work with a financial professional to select the appropriate investments for your short-term goals. But, in general, you’ll need these investments to provide you with the following attributes: Protection of principal – As mentioned
12
Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | C I V
above, when you own stocks, you have no assurance that your principal will be preserved; there’s no agency, no government office, guaranteeing that you won’t lose money. And even some of the investments best suited for short-term goals won’t come with full guarantees, either, but, by and large, they do offer you a reasonable amount of confidence that your principal will remain intact. Liquidity – Some short-term investments have specific terms – i.e., two years, three years, five years, etc. – meaning you do have an incentive to hold these investments until they mature. Otherwise, if you cash out early, you might pay some price, such as loss of value or loss of the income produced by these investments. Nonetheless, these types of investments are usually not difficult to sell, either before they mature or at maturity, and this liquidity will be helpful to you when you need the money to meet your short-term goal. Stability of issuer – Although most investments suitable for shortterm goals do provide a high degree of preservation of principal, some of the issuers of these investments are stronger and more stable than others – and these strong and stable issuers are the ones you should stick with. Ultimately, most of your investment efforts will probably go toward your long-term goals. But your short-term goals are still important – and the right investment strategy can help you work toward them.

Dr. Amy’s Top 10 Questions Answered I receive a good amount of questions asking what exactly is chiropractic care at Thrive. Here are answers to the top 10 questions I get asked. 1. What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic is a health science based on correcting interference in the nerve system. This interference is caused by physical, chemical, and emotional stress. Specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments remove that interference so your body will function at its optimum potential (that means you will be the best YOU ever). 2. What is an adjustment? A specific, noninvasive “thrust” delivered by hand, called a “manual adjustment” or an instrument called the Arthrostim or the Activator. It’s fast and non-painful. The purpose of the adjustment is to remove nerve interference from your body. 3. Will my adjustment hurt? No! Manual adjustments are safe, gentle, and they feel good, too. The Arthrostim, a hand-held electric instrument, delivers a quick burst of short thrusts at a frequency of 12 per second, so all you will feel are highly effective, light rapid “taps” and hear a sound like a woodpecker. The Activator is a low force adjustment as well. We have safely adjusted tiny children a few hours old right up to practice members ninety-five years or older with these instruments. 4. Can you help my sick child? I help lots of children, which makes their parents rave about their healthy child. Children respond incredibly well to chiropractic care. Schedule an appointment to have your child checked to see if I can help them. 5. How many times do I have to come? That’s easy... come as often as you want to heal, feel great, defy age, and live pain-free! Because each individual is unique on every level, it’s difficult to know how many times you will need to be adjusted in order to reach each of your health goals. For practical purposes we can estimate your initial schedule, but that is subject to change according to your rate of progress and goals. One thing is for sure: YOUR goals and expectations will determine your care plan – frequency and duration. 6. Will I feel better after getting adjusted? Your care is unique to YOU, and how your body heals and responds is also unique. Most people are very happy with the results of chiropractic care. Many of them feel relief from pain almost immediately after an adjustment. It’s also possible that the pain may require several to many adjustments to fade. Rarely, a small percentage of people may experience a temporary increase in their symptoms before they start to get better. No matter what course your recovery takes, you should also know that beyond the removal of your symptoms, chiropractic care offers an opportunity for much greater overall health, if you choose to use it for that purpose as well. 7. Will chiropractic care be expensive? That depends on how you yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105
define “expensive”. You are always in control of your finances. We won’t spend a dime of your money without your permission. Is it going to require more of your money than an over-thecounter or prescription drug? Probably so. Is it as expensive as surgery or a life surrendered to drugs and their side effects? NO! Considering the benefits, the experience at this office, the all inclusiveness of our services, and the cost of providing you with the best health care, our fees are very reasonably priced. We have an array of financial options so you can save money on the care you deserve. Ask us for details. Investing in your health is of priceless value because without your health, not much else matters. When you’re unhealthy you can’t work; your relationships suffer; you miss out on life’s golden opportunities; and you’re robbed of fully experiencing this world. 8. What services do you offer? We offer the most personalized supportive chiropractic care possible including cutting edge chiropractic adjustments manually-delivered by hand or utilizing the Arthrostim or Activator; specialized care for pregnant women—Dr. Amy is certified in the Webster Technique, flexion-distraction for injuries, and a true community of practice members who care about their health and the well-being of those around them, to encourage and support you on your own journey towards well-being. 9. How long will it take to get adjusted? Even the busiest practice members commit to making chiropractic care a priority in their lives and find the benefits well worth their time. Your adjustment may take between five and fifteen minutes. That’s it! If, however, you want to schedule extra time, one-on- one to talk about a particular issue, just ask and we will schedule appropriately. 10. What if I feel fine? Do I need to keep coming back? That is always up to you. The truth is that those who stop care when they are “feeling fine” often return later with the same problem, only it’s sometimes worse. On the other hand, those that commit to regular care find their problem rarely returns: as well, they enjoy a higher quality of life and health. If regular chiropractic care keeps you “feeling fine”, why would you choose to stop doing what’s working for you? It’s kind of like this: if your teeth feel fine, do you stop brushing them? Digital Detox How To Disconnect From Your Devices and Reconnect With What Really Matters from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services
When was the last time you unplugged for 24 hours? If your answer is “I can’t remember”, a Digital Detox could be what you need. Why Do It? You’ll Sleep Better. 44% of cell phone owners slept with their smart phone next to their bed because they want to make sure they don’t miss any calls, text messages or other updates during the night. Scientists found that using a cell phone or laptop before bed can disrupt the body’s production of melatonin and negatively affect sleep quality. You’ll Increase Your Attention Span. Due to external stimulation, the average attention span of a human being has dropped below that of a goldfish. Human in 2000: 12 seconds. Human in 2013: 8 seconds and Goldfish: 9 seconds. You’ll Be Happier. The more time a person spends on Facebook, the more dissatisfied they ultimately feel with their own life. You’ll Boost Your Productivity. 29% of smart phone owners describe their phone as “something they can’t imagine living without.” 1/3 feel anxious when briefly separated from their beloved gadget. 20% check their phones every 10 minutes.
Now Acceptinegnts
How to do it? Step 1: Decide how long you want to detox for. Try it for 24 hours. It can be 72 hours or more if want to build up to that. Step 2: Plan your detox. Choose a time that’s realistic for you. Weekends, vacations and holidays are great times to try it. Make sure you tell your family, clients and anyone who might need to get a hold of you that you’ll be away from your email and smart phone for a period of time. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get some of them onboard. Step 3: Make some fun plans! These can be things like cooking, walking or spending time with friends and family. Spending time in nature is a great thing to do, as it is a proven way to restore your attention. Step 4: Log off! Turn all devices off and place them somewhere where they won’t tempt you. Out of sight, out of mind! Step 5: Enjoy! Side effects of a digital detox may include: better sleep, thinking more clearly and feeling re-energized. Enjoy the change and notice your reaction to not being “on call”. For information on this article, or if you have any real estate questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me today. Glenville Police Department Update
With the long, cold winter behind us, it’s time to set our sights on the summer months ahead – and we have a busy season planned. First, I am proud to announce that we are bringing Thursday’s In The Park at Indian Meadows back to August this year. We are currently planning free concert and movies for each Thursday in August at Indian Meadows. Watch for details on that coming to our new website soon (and, if you haven’t checked out the redesigned website, please do.) Also, this summer we are finally set to start a bunch of projects to improve the quality of life in Glenville: the Glenridge Road pedestrian trail, the Indian Meadows Outdoor Fitness Park, field expansions at Maalwyck Park and work at the historic Yates Mansion are all planned to be completed this season. On the economic development front we have been busy working on many projects around town that range from an exciting multi-use project on Dutch Meadows Lane to a major investment in the Business and Technology Park that includes a national cheesemaker (Belgioioso Cheese) investing $25 million in our community to bring a 100,000 square foot facility that will host 50 new jobs. We’re happy to report the Aldi’s has finally broken ground in Town Center and are on track for an early-fall opening. Financially, I am proud to report that the 2018 budget was passed last November stayed under the state imposed tax cap , as we have each and every year. The overall 2018 tax levy increased by just 1.8% - or an actual dollar increase of just $7 per year, per typical home within the town. Other highlights of this budget include once again reducing the reliance of the fund balance, which we have cut our reliance on the fund balance by 75% or by $1.1 million over the past 8 years. I am equally proud to announce that this budget further reduces our debt burden by another $1 million from last year, adding to our reduction in town debt by $10 million in 8 years. We have accomplished all this while continuing to invest in the town’s infrastructure and staff. Earlier this year, the Town Board voted to add an additional police officer to the staff to help meet the town’s growing needs and the Board is looking to add yet another officer in 2019. It’s worth noting that the Empire Policy ranked the top 20 highest property tax rates in the Capital Region and although Scotia was ranked 2nd, Schenectady 1st, and Rotterdam 5th, Glenville didn’t even make the top 20. I am proud that we remain committed to holding your tax rates down, below among the lowest in the entire region. Finally, a word about our future and our past. The town is starting to plan our bicentennial in 2020 and we want your help. We are currently planning a community meeting for Wednesday, June 6th at 7 PM at Town Hall to talk about ideas of how we would like to celebrate the anniversary. If you’re interested or have ideas, please plan on attending. If you can’t attend and still want to help, please email me at ckoetzle@townofglenville. org. We’re also looking for residents with any information or stories about Yates Mansion.
As many residents have recently seen in the news over the past week, one of our suspects arrested in the Target Sports burglary last year has admitted to the crime and is facing up to twenty years in Federal prison. The extensive investigation, which we were assisted by the New York State Police and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, had to follow leads ranging from the Capital Region to Rochester. About one half of the reported firearms have been recovered and there are still suspects to be interviewed and potentially arrested. Glenville Police would not have had the success in this investigation without the assistance of these professional organizations. The Glenville Town Board unanimously passed a resolution in November of 2017 to allow the Police Department to hire an additional officer in July of this year, expanding the police force for the first time in years. A certified Schenectady County Civil Service list was obtained and the canvassing of prospective candidates on the Town of Glenville resident list was conducted last month. Interviews will take place this week and we hope to find the best candidate for the position. The candidate will attend the Zone 5 Law Enforcement Academy in July for six months. Once the candidate successfully completes the academy and their twelve-week inservice training they will join our force protecting and serving the residents and business owners of our town. The Police Department will continue or yearly participation with the NYS Governors Traffic Safety Committee in an attempt to curb aggressive driving and distracted driving. NYSGTSC grant funding will be applied to additional patrols looking for vehicle and traffic violations such as: cellphone use, following too closely, failing to use your seatbelt, speeding and other moving violations. This enforcement is meant to significantly decrease the possibility of a serious accident in our community.
New Website The town launched a revamped website this past March that offers a new, easier to use design, a cleaner layout and offers a more efficient system for employees to post to it. Check it out at townofglenville.org and sign up for news and announcements while you’re there.
Enjoy!

Belgioioso Cheese to Build New Plant in Glenville Company to Create Nearly 50 Jobs and Invest $25 Million in Glenville. BelGioioso Cheese, one of the nation’s largest specialty cheese producers, plans to build a new 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Glenville, and create about 50 new jobs and retain 31 local employees. In addition, BelGioioso Cheese will be using milk from New York dairy farms, providing a boost to the State’s agricultural industry. Founded in 1979, BelGioioso is a specialty producer of all-natural, award-winning Italian cheeses. The cheeses are manufactured, aged, finished, packaged and shipped from the company’s facilities, allowing them to oversee and provide quality control from start to finish. For nearly 40 years, BelGioioso cheeses have set a standard of excellence in the industry, winning several national and international awards for taste and quality. The Green Bay, Wisconsin-based company owns and operates nine manufacturing plants, including the former Cappiello’s plant in Schenectady, that support the production of nearly 30 different cheese varieties. Errico Auricchio, BelGioioso Cheese founder and owner is excited to be coming to Glenville. BelGioioso Cheese has signed a contract to purchase 40 acres at the Glenville Business and Technology Park, where it will build a state-of-theart manufacturing plant. The land purchase was recently approved by the United States General Services Administration, and plans for the new facility will be reviewed by the Town of Glenville Planning and Zoning Commission. Glenville Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle said, “This is a huge win for Glenville and a great team effort by the state, Metroplex, and the town. This is another example of the tremendous growth and progress we are experiencing in Glenville and, specifically, at the Business Park.”
Town Sponsors Local Musicians’ Opera Celebrating Women’s Sufferage Tells the story of early female pilot and her heroic flight in support of suffrage The town will help celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage by sponsoring an opera, Aleda or the Flight of the Suffbird Women. The opera tells the story of a female pilot Leda Richberg-Hornsby and her bravery in the fight for women’s suffrage. Set in Staten Island in 1916, the opera is a celebration of Leda’s determination to gain the right to vote for women. Equipped with a bi-plane, a cargo of votes-for-women petitions, a huge banner reading “Women want liberty too,” the suffragists set out to fly over President Wilson’s yacht, docked in the New York Harbor for a national celebration at the lighting of the Statute of Liberty. Leda’s plan was to “bomb” the yacht with petitions, but the elaborate plan ended in a crash after a gale of wind forced the plane down in a swamp in Staten Island. Luckily no one was hurt. The attempt stands as testimony to the courage and determination of these women in their struggle for the right to vote. The Glenville group, Musicians of Ma’alwyck, commissioned and produced this opera that will be performed in June at CLYNK in the Glenville Business and Technology Park. Performances are scheduled for June 8th through 10th and will offer the community a unique setting in which to come hear about this dramatic story. For tickets, please visit musicianofmaalwyck.org.

Glenville Hosted 7th Annual Local Economic Development Forum Panelist to discussed projects, vision for town’s future
Town officials joined local planners, consultants, and state employees to present plans to the town’s small business owners, developers, and land owners relating to the vision for the Freemans Bridge Road commercial corridor, the town’s Business and Technology Park, and other areas of growth within the town. The event, with a near record turnout, provided attendees with networking opportunities for business owners and developers to come together and talk about possible projects. This year’s forum featured a formal panel session where panelists discussed the many projects going on in town and talked about the vision for the town’s commercial corridors. The panel, moderated by Supervisor Chris Koetzle, featured Mike Relyea of Amanus Consulting, Don Adams of Creighton Manning Engineers, James Levy of Planning4Places, and Jason Purvis of New York State Office of Community Renewal. Each gave a short overview of their project within the town and participated in an open “question and answer” discussion period. “This is a great opportunity for our business community to come together and talk about all the great opportunities that exist in Glenville,” said Chris Koetzle, Town Supervisor. “We have so many great attributes; so many reasons why a small business would want to come to Glenville and there is just so much development going on in the town that it’s nice to see us all come together under one common vision.”
Senator Schumer Visits Senior Center Senator Schumer paid a visit to Glenville this past April to address the town’s senior citizens about additional Social Security funding that the Congress secured and the president signed in the 2018 federal budegt.

Thursday’s in the Park Returns to Summer 2018 Full lineup includes plans for movies and concerts; “date night” planned for 8.23
The town will host “Thursday’s in the Park” at Indian Meadows again this year with a full lineup of entertainment planned for every Thursday in August. All acts and/or shows have not been confirmed yet, but the History and Culture Committee is planning on hosting concerts during the first three weeks in August and movies during the last two weeks. This year the committee is adding a “date night” for adults on Thursday, August 23rd where the town will screen a classic movie under the stars. A children’s movies is planned to end the season on August 30th. The town started the entertainment venue last year with a series of concerts and movies in the outdoor setting at Indian Meadows park. Events this year are expected to start around dusk. The committee is still looking for event sponsors and if anyone is interested in supporting this great venue, please email Supervisor Chris Koetzle at ckoetzle@ townofglenville.org. Watch the town’s website or glenville2020.org for details.
Town Codes Review Committee Off and Running
Town Celebrated Earth Day with Tree Planting Ceremony in Park Dogwood trees to be added to town’s dog park Supervisor Chris Koetzle and Deputy Supervisor Gina Wierzbowski were joined by local business leaders to plant trees in the Andersen Park where the town’s dog park is located at 180 Van Buren Rd on Saturday, April 21st. Lilananda Yoga Studio was on-hand to help plant the trees and offered residents free yoga classes on Sunday, April 22. The BioSoil Farm of the Glenville Business and Technology Park also donated the “super-charged potting soil” made from worm castings at the Glenville indoor farm. Representatives from the farm talked with residents about their environmentally friendly soil mixtures. “The town is pleased to have such great members of our business community come together and help us beautify our park while celebrating Earth Day,” said Chris Koetzle, Town Supervisor. “This tree planting, although small in context, highlights the need to better protect our planet and acts to remind our residents that collectively, we can all do something to be better stewards.”
Last October the Glenville Town Board adopted a new Comprehensive Plan for the Town, replacing the Comprehensive Plan that had been in place since 1990. Development and adoption of the new Plan was an intensive three-year process, requiring unwavering dedication from resident volunteers of both the Comprehensive Plan Committee and the Residential Advisory Committee, not to mention a considerable time commitment on the part of Planning staff and Town Board members. Local residents and business owners were also heavily invested, as over a dozen public hearings, workshops and public information sessions helped shape the Plan. Adoption of the Comprehensive Plan was just the first step in a multistep, multi-year effort. Now the Town is charged with amending its Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, and related land use codes, some of which date back several decades. Tasked with this challenge is the newly formed Town Codes Review Committee, which held its kickoff meeting in March. The Committee consists of representatives from various Town departments and the Town Board, and it is chaired by Glenville resident and former Town Councilman James Martin. As with the Comprehensive Plan process, amending the Town code will likely take two or more years. Stay tuned for updates via the Town’s website, and eventually, public information meetings and hearings.

After 34 years of dedicated service to Glenville, Jamie MacFarland fully retired from the town on April 30th. In his tenure Jamie served in many capacities - overseeing the town’s parks, senior center, and youth activities. Jamie also served as the town’s Deputy Supervisor, director of operations, and human resources officer and was a major catalyst for creating and running Oktoberfest. During Jamie’s tenure his his many roles, he was largely responsible for the town building a branding new senior center, expansion of the town’s parks system that includes the creation of a brand new dog park, and work with youth athletic leagues that have led to new baseball, soccer, football, and softball fields in our parks. Jamie partially retired 5 years ago from director of operations and transitioned from full-time to part-time. During that time, the Board decided to transition the Supervisor to full-time (from part-time) a create a fully professional Supervisor’s position instead of hiring an outside person to run day-to-day operations of the town. This move saved the town significant amount of money and was certified by the New York State Comptroller as an efficiency for the residents of the town. Jamie brought professionalism, class and a certain calm to his many roles at the town and was always a gentleman. Jamie will be missed, but we all wish him well in his future plans.
Freemans Bridge Road Complete Streets Plan to be Wrapped up in May After over a year of effort, the Town of Glenville and its consultant partner Planning4Places is about to conclude its Complete Streets Plan for the Freemans Bridge Road corridor. Funded through the Capital District Transportation Committee’s (CDTC) Linkage Grant Program, the Freemans Bridge Road Complete Streets Plan looks to transform this important Town highway corridor from its current automobile-dominated environment into a street that accommodates all users. “Complete Streets,” most simply defined, are streets for everyone. Complete Streets are important streets and highway corridors that are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities. Planned Improvements in the Vicinity of the Intersection of Freemans Bridge Road and Maple Avenue Complementing the installation of sidewalks and multi-use paths will be the implementation of access management and traffic calming principles for the corridor. Examples of access management include the consolidation of existing driveways, establishment of parallel service

roads, connecting of parking lots on adjacent properties, and the minimization of new curb cuts. Traffic calming takes on many forms, including the installation of raised landscaped medians, use of high visibility crosswalks with pedestrian count-down timers, narrowing of travel lanes, and bump-out curbing, among many others. All of these techniques will be on the table as the Town moves to complete the Plan, and beyond. As of this writing, the tentative schedule for wrap-up of the Plan includes the last scheduled public workshop/hearing on May 1st and a final presentation to the Town Board on May 16th. For more information on the Plan and schedule, please visit the project website at www.freemansgateway.com.

Glenville Seeking Businesses Interested in Microenterprise Funding
Oak Wilt Disease Management Needs Public’s Cooperation
The town of Glenville is seeking $200,000 for a new Microenterprise program. The program will assist small business owners or startups by providing grants to nurture job creation and growth at local businesses. Half of the total funding will be earmarked for startup ventures. Eligible businesses must be located in the town of Glenville or village of Scotia and have no more than five combined part- and full-time employees, one of whom must be the owner. Grant awards will range from $5,000 to $35,000 per business and can be used as working capital or for the purchase of inventory, equipment and furnishings, among other uses. The funds cannot be used for new building construction, property acquisition, the renovation of existing buildings or for debt relief. The microenterprise program will contain provisions emphasizing job creation, particularly for low- and moderate-income employees. To be eligible for a grant, businesses must create at least one full-time or equivalent job within 90 days of the completion of their grant-funded project. Retention of existing jobs as a result of the funding does not fulfill the program’s job creation requirement. Business owners must complete a small business education course and pay a minimum of 10 percent of eligible project costs prior to the disbursement of grant funds. Contact the Glenville Economic Development and Planning Department at 518-688-1200 extension 7 for more information.
Oak Wilt Disease, formerly limited to the Glen Oaks neighborhood, returned to Glenville at the Sanders Preserve and St. Anthony La. neighborhoods in 2017. The NYS DEC has acted aggressively to halt the spread of this disease which can kill a mature oak tree in less than a month. All affected trees have been removed and chipped, and now the public’s help is needed. DEC’s advice as follows: 1. Do not move firewood of any type from the town of Glenville. Oak is often mixed in with other wood types and can spread oak wilt inadvertently. 2. Do not prune oak trees between March and September. 3. Trees show oak wilt symptoms around the 4th of July. They are: • Brown coloration develops on leaves starting at the outer edge and progressing inward toward the mid-vein of the leaf. • Branch dieback starts at the top of the tree’s canopy and progresses downward. • Leaves suddenly wilt in the spring and summer and may fall while there is still some green on them. • Fungal spore mats may develop under the bark of infected trees. 4. If you believe a tree may be infected, contact DEC Forest Health at foresthealth@dec.ny.gov A sign has been placed temporarily on Rt. 50 in town center to provide this important public information.
Town of Glenville – DPW The Town of Glenville in conjunction with County Waste announces that the 2018 Bulk Item program will begin on June 4, 2018. Please place your acceptable items curbside on Sunday, June 3, 2018. More information can be found on our website at https://www.townofglenville. org/dpw-highway. As our highway budget permits, will be paving town roads in Alplaus, this includes Bruce Drive. In the event of a severe storm in the Town of Glenville that causes down trees and limbs, we ask that residents place debris out to the curb side as soon as possible. Crews will conduct a two week clean up from the date of storm. Spring/Summer yard waste disposal, including leaves, brush, and grass clippings is the responsibility of the homeowner. Please contact your trash hauler for their details. Code §99 entitled Brush, Grass and Weeds states that property owners must maintain their lot or land. Any such lot or land that allows uncut growth of grass, weeds or brush, or any noxious or poisonous plants to accumulate or grow to a height in excess of 10 inches will be in violation.
Maalwyck Park Update The town has contracted with Hartgen Associates to perform the final phase of archaeological investigation in conjunction with site work to construct the main road and parking for the park. AMZ Contracting, Inc. will perform the road work and the park will be quite active with construction and archaeological investigation this spring. The fields in the upper plateau of the park will also benefit from additional topsoil placement to make them level. The final phase of work will be construction of a pavilion with rest rooms and water, electrical, and sewer service, to be bid upon completion of the archaeological and road work.
Town Software Upgrades Also Near Completion In addition to upgrading water meters and water billing software, over the past year the Town has also undertaken an upgrade of its financial software and buildings & codes software systems. Employee training on these new systems has been ongoing in 2018 and both new systems will “go live” in the next few weeks. The new financial software replaces a DOS-based system purchased by the Town in the 1980s while the buildings and codes software replaces a legacy system that is nearing 15 years old. These upgrades will provide more efficient services for residents and staff by linking the town-wide permitting, cashiering, and financial systems, replacing stand-alone “silo” systems that were unable to communicate with each other. Due to our financial reserves, the Town was able to pay cash – and avoid borrowing and debt payments - to upgrade these antiquated financial, buildings & codes, and water billing software systems.

Fairy Tales Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Make Believe, animals talked, dragons breathed fire, quests were real, and magic occurred, all with the an ending that was “happily ever after.” Fairy tales are one of the keys to the development of imagination, making the impossible seem possible. These stories introduce children to critical thinking skills, build vocabulary through use of culturally rich language, foster creativity, and offer hope through the ideal that goodness perseveres. An entire story structure (plot, setting, characters, tension, resolution) are set inside a relatively short narrative that is engaging and offers deep emotion in a safe environment. Albert Einstein once said: “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be even more intelligent, read them even more fairy tales.” Want to get even better than that? Have them dance out fairy tales! This year’s 2018 dance recital by Modern Dance With Ginny Martin and Dana Yager centers on these fairy tales as old as time. The opening dances by the Creative Movement classes features the tale of The Ugly Duckling, a suitable piece for a group of young dancers that have emerged this year into stunning swans. The Beginning Modern class (6-8 year olds) will dance the actual story line from Goldilocks and The Three Bears, a fairy tale interpreted through choreography. But this year’s program offers more than simply the story lines of fairy tales. Beginning I (7-10 year olds) features a helper as The Pied Piper of Hamelin while the students, as rats, interpret the magical music of Lemon Jelly’s “The Staunton Lick.” Intermediate I’s class of Seven Dwarves neglects Snow White completely and instead focuses on the seven traits of the dwarves themselves. See if you can determine which ones are being danced throughout the piece. Rather than center on lies and growing noses, Intermediate II will display the physicality of puppets throughout the choreography of Pinocchio. And, in the philosophy of fostering student creativity and immersion in the process of dance, Intermediate III and IV will feature pieces involving some student-developed choreography. These works include: Sleeping Beauty, The Jabberwocky, Little Red Riding Hood, and others. Of course, these are only some of the featured fairy tales and the classes that will perform them. We invite you to join us for this Fairy Tale world on Monday, June 4, or Tuesday, June 5, at The Egg in Albany for our 2018 Modern Dance With Ginny Martin and Dana Yager recital. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and lasts about 2 ½ hours (including intermission). It is a fast-paced show and, as always, admission is free. Meet & Greet On Saturday, April 21 the “Track of Champions Fonda Speedway opened the gates for their 65th season of racing and the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M was ready for action. After being spun in turn four by another driver in warm-ups, Mark and crew made repairs and was ready to start sixth in qualifying heat race number three and at the checkered flag, he finished the event in fourth. That set Mark in the 12th starting position for the feature event and by the time the third original restart was green flagged he sat in the 10th position after a couple of cars in front of him were involved in early wrecks. On another restart on lap two, Mark made a great move around the outside of four cars up to the sixth spot. On another restart with 10 laps to go, Mark was hung out on the outside with three getting by putting Mark back to the ninth position. That would be where Mark would finish at the drop of the checkered flag in the first event of the 2018-racing season. After a rainout on April 28, the racing action resumed at Fonda on Saturday, May 5 with a Driver Meet & Greet added to the racing program as well. Mark started the third heat race in the sixth position and moved up one spot to fifth at
yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105
the completion of the event. That put Mark in the 15th starting spot for the 25-lap feature event and after some changes were made to the car for the feature Mark was ready to go. On lap three Mark was racing three wide on the backstretch for position inside the top 10 when incidental contact was made between Mark and another car as they ran out of room going into turn three bringing out the caution flag. Mark was in and out of the “hot pit” many times after that to try to get the car back in racing condition but it was damaged bad enough that he was forced to retire to the pit area resulting in a 17th place finish. The highlight of the night at Fonda on Saturday, May 5 was definitely the Driver Meet & Greet as Mark drove the car on the front straightaway and many people stopped over to get a picture with Mark and an autographed picture to take with them as well. The Meet & Greet is a great time for kids and adults alike to stop and meet their favorite drivers up close and personal. A photo above is from the Meet & Greet where sponsor Jay Crouse and family friend Ken Crispin pose with Mark for a picture while Ken’s wife Cheryl takes the photo.

Happy Mother’s Day There are some things, that through time, we identify with. Some of us identify ourselves as a business owner, a painter, a house cleaner, an accountant or even a therapist. Our identity coming from what we do. I have identified as many things over the years. A fitness freak, the lady who writes the column in our local paper and even the Bead Lady from the Library. All of these have served me well. There is however one that was thrust on to me about 21 years ago. That my friends, is being a mother. I use the word thrust here with the fact that no matter how long I knew it was coming it was still a wide eyed awakening for me. Walking through the doors of our quaint home with our new bundle of joy. Realizing in a few short minutes, as the panic spread through my tired body, I thought to myself... “I can’t believe they let us just take him home, we don’t know what we are doing!” At that moment I was thrust into motherhood. I knew with each cry I was his mom. As time went on I grew accustom to this new title of mine. For many years it was my identity. I was known to the one who mattered most to me as “Mom”. The days turned to years and the little bundle was no longer little. Oh, there are still moments we cry. Moments I just enjoy looking at him. Moments I knew that being a mom isn’t just what I did I was so much more. As he grew, I grew as well. He taught me patience and understanding. He taught me to fight for what I wanted and that it won’t be easy. “Push yourself and all that hard work will pay off” he would say to me. I would encourage him and pray for him. He would do the same for me. So yes, I can identify myself as a mom. The title taking on more than I ever thought possible. Now I am a friend, an encourager, that mom who still goes to all of his events and even a “slack” picker -upper. I would do it all over again (even that first say day of shear panic)! This column is a tribute to my mom. She is my mom, my friend, my encourager and my confidant. Thanks mom I couldn’t have done it without you. I love you A-L-O-T! As always I wish you peace, joy and very Happy Mother’s Day Pattie Rakvica Nutritional Therapist Rakvicahealth@gmail.com

Safety Around Water 2018
PROFESSIONAL TICK & MOSQUITO SPRAYING FOR YOUR YARD!
EXPERIENCED - CERTIFIED - INSURED LOCAL - FULL SERVICE
May is National Water Safety Month, and the perfect time to get children involved in swim lessons. As America’s Swim Instructor, the Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming—teaching more than one million kids a year swimming and water safety skills. This year, we updated our lessons to increase the accessibility and enjoyment of swimming to all ages and skill levels. The latest evolution of Y Swim Lessons accommodates varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers’ progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime. There are three general categories of Y Swim Lessons •Swim Starters develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. •Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water. •Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Together, we’re building a stronger Glenville. If you would like to join us and make your donation or to learn more about swim lessons, please contact me. Spring Comes to Town – Finally! By Kathleen A. Sanvidge, Licensed Funeral Director and Owner, Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home
Happy Spring from the folks at Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home. Over the last few months, I’ve been working hard to give you valuable information about the many services we provide. But as we all know, Spring doesn’t come around here soon enough, and it certainly doesn’t stay long enough! So, this month I want to turn my attention away from end of life and instead talk about new things happening here. We’ll resume our series next month. So, what’s new? As many of you may already know, Townley & Wheeler recently received a Microenterprise Grant from the Town of Ballston. The funding will enable us to modernize and upgrade our equipment, so we can continue to offer the highest quality of service. The funding will also enable us to create another full-time position here, something that we are very proud to do. Be watching as construction begins on our latest expansion. Springtime on our porch: We’re very excited to begin enjoying our beautiful porch, built by the wonderful professionals at Schrader Company. It’s hard to believe that it has already been a year since we held our “Porch Blessing” and opening party. As we set the rockers back out on and hang the ferns, we hope that many of you will give us a call and stop by. We’d love to sit on the porch and talk with you about your future plans. You should also be
Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home
watching on our website, our Facebook page and in the Daily Gazette for news of upcoming events that we’ll be hosting on the porch, with lemonade and cookies for all. Memorial Day – a day of flags and remembrance: Did you know that Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day?” For this reason, we’ve decided to start a new tradition at Townley & Wheeler. In addition to the traditional bunting that will be displayed on our lovely porch, we are also going to donate 100 flags to one of our beautiful local cemeteries. Because there are so many wonderful cemeteries in this area, we’ve decided to pick a name out of a hat. Each year our flags will go to a different cemetery. Watch for the announcement on our website and Facebook page for this year’s recipient. And speaking of flags... We are particularly excited about being part of the annual Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Flag Day Parade in June. 2018 marks the second year that we have participated. We hope many of you planted the adorable little seed packets we threw to the crowd of onlookers. We’re busy putting our heads together deciding what kind of goodies to toss to the crowd for this year’s festivities. One final note: we have just published our beautiful new Bereavement and Planning Guide. It is full of information about pre-arranging your final plans, estate planning, and many other important topics. If you are interested in learning more, please give us a call (518) 399-5022 or email us at: townleywheelerfh@gmail.com and we will be glad to send you a copy. Kathleen A. Sanvidge is a licensed funeral director and proud owner of Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY. She is also the only funeral director in NYS to be certified through the Women Business Enterprise. Kathleen has been proudly serving residents in the Capital Region for more than 25 years.

Live by Design, Not Default (in 10 easy steps!) by Kim Perone, Certified Life Coach How often do we feel like we live by default. We enter jobs by default, find ourselves overloaded with too many tasks by default, and end up dealing with stress by default. While we may have started with a plan for our life, we can be quickly swept away if we are not intentional and fully conscious to what is going on in our lives. If you are someone who wants to live by design, I welcome you to start today and create a plan that will lay out your desires and priorities. May it become a manifesto for your life and one that will help you stay focused on living by your own design rather than by the circumstance, happenstance, or the wishes of others. The time is now. Are you ready? 1. How do you want to be remembered? Take a few moments to write how you would like to be remembered many years in the future. 2. What matters most to you? List the six priorities that matter most to you. These are your guiding principles and can be used to weigh choices of time, energy, and other resources. 3. What do you desire? Make sure you are allowing yourself to dream. All too often we hold ourselves back from truly connecting with what we desire because we are afraid of disappointment. I suggest you boldly note what you desire. 4. Create an account for each key relationship or priority in your life. These ‘life accounts’ each require our ‘deposits’ to keep them flourishing and living with balance. 5. Envision. What will your life look like in five years? Take some time to propel yourself forward in your mind and write this vision as if it were a reality today. 6. Examine fears, blocks and self-limiting beliefs. What holds you back from achieving your dream life? Once you have determined what that may be, what would empower you to break that block and live the life of your own design. 7. Determine how you re-energize. Make a point to focus on selfcare, which is certainly not selfish, but rather necessary to recharge. One cannot give from an empty vessel. 8. Determine where you need to set boundaries. Is there an area in your life you feel particularly resentful, vulnerable, or out of control? This is usually an indication that some boundaries need to be set.
9. Create a visual. If you are someone who enjoys a visual representation of your goals, turn your plan into a Vision Board or Mind Map and keep it somewhere you will see it every day. 10. Start a journal to track your progress. Stay focused on living by your design by writing your intentions for life and keeping them close to your head and heart. There is no better time to create a life plan than today. Life is a beautiful gift to be valued and treasured! If you would like to learn more and create your life plan, contact Kim to register for Live By Design (Not Default): a 3-Hour Workshop, Saturday, May 12th noon-3pm, $50 or The Power of YOU! 5 Hour Workshop on Saturday, June 2nd, 10am-3pm, $99 at The Center for Clarity, Compassion & Contentment at 801 Route 50. Not Married? You’re Not Alone But You Still Need a Plan Approximately half of America’s population over the age of 16 is unmarried. While much of the discussion involving estate planning focuses on married couples, this topic is just as important for a single person. In fact, many times it is even more important that a single person have a well-coordinated estate plan. This is because the default laws governing estates often work poorly for people without a spouse and may not adequately provide for a significant other or unmarried partner. Having a cohesive and well-drafted estate plan will ensure that you protect and provide for those you truly care about upon your death. Evolving Estate Planning It is important to understand that your estate plan can change over time. You may eventually experience life changes like getting married, having children, or buying your first home that will necessitate changes to your estate plan. Although life is constantly changing, it is best to get in the driver’s seat early when it comes to estate planning.

If you die without a will — referred to as intestate — all of your possessions will be distributed according to the default laws of your state. While most state laws have a married person’s assets go to their surviving spouse and children, the same is not true for unmarried individuals. Generally, state law provides that a single person’s assets are passed on to their next of kin. This includes children, parents, and siblings. Noticeably absent for many unmarried people are provisions providing for a long-term boyfriend or girlfriend. And, if there are no surviving close relatives, the assets will likely go to the state. To avoid the state dictating what happens to your assets, it is vital that you have a properly drafted estate plan put together. As an Unmarried Person, How You Own Things Is Very Important There is an increasing number of couples that are not getting married, and other individuals who are deciding to remain single. For this group, estate planning is important because taxes and other financial benefits tend to favor those who have tied the knot. It also brings up the need to be very careful about how assets are titled. How your assets are titled and how the beneficiary designations are prepared will impact how your assets will be distributed upon your passing. The most common ways to hold title to property is tenants in common (TIC) and joint tenants with rights of survivorship (JTWROS). Property that is held as TIC means that each owner owns an interest in the property. At the death of one owner, that interest is transferred according to his or her estate plan, or intestate succession if there is no estate planning. This is not an ideal way for unmarried couples to own property because at the death of one of them, the other person will end up as joint owner with the deceased’s next of kin. JTWROS is one option for unmarried couples because when one owner dies, the property automatically transfers to the surviving owner. There are several other planning strategies that can be beneficial for unmarried individuals — involving tax benefits, retirement plans, wills and trusts, and healthcare powers of attorney — if the right estate plan is carefully crafted. Bluebirds Means Spring! I welcome any sign that spring is near. One of those signs is seeing the first bluebird of the season. Anyone who has ever seen one knows the feeling of surprise and joy that accompanies a bluebird sighting. Since they are not overly shy of humans and nest and feed in open areas, bluebirds are some of the easiest birds to watch and learn about. Bluebirds are territorial so once you’ve seen them in an area, odds are good that you’ll be able to visit and observe them on a regular basis. Those with a large lawn or property adjacent to open fields can attract their own resident bluebirds to enjoy on a daily basis during spring and summer. I am lucky to be able to host a pair of bluebirds, and the little effort needed to attract them to your yard is amply rewarded by the color and liveliness they add to the little bit of the world we call our garden. The easiest way to lure bluebirds to your property is to provide bluebird-nesting boxes. If you would like plans for building a bluebirdnesting box, go to the NYS Bluebird Society website. If you purchase a bluebird box, all you need to know is where to mount it to attract bluebirds. Your bluebird box should be mounted on a metal post. Mounting on trees is not advised, since it may allow predators to gain access to the box. Your bluebird-nesting box should be mounted with the bottom a minimum of 3’ from the ground. 4’ to 5’ is considered optimal. In our cold climate, the box should be mounted with the entrance facing southeast, away from our colder prevailing wind. Since bluebirds hunt for insects in lawns and meadows, it’s best to locate your box adjacent to these open areas. To help fledglings survive, try to place your boxes where there is a fencepost or tree within 100’ of the entrance hole. This will give young bluebirds an easy, safe perch to reach on their first flight from the box. Since bluebirds are territorial, nesting boxes should not be placed closer than 300’ apart. If you have swallows in your area, they may compete with bluebirds for nesting boxes. In this situation, it may be necessary to place two boxes 5’ to 15’ apart. The swallows will occupy one box, leaving the other available for the bluebirds. Since bluebirds are on the increase in New York State, properly placing

nesting boxes on your property is very likely to attract younger pairs of bluebirds with the possibility that they and their offspring will return to your area year after year. To lure nesting bluebirds to your area, have your nesting boxes up as early in spring as possible. If all goes well, you’ll have a nice clutch of eggs by early May. After that, it is simply a matter of keeping the boxes clean and safe. In fall or early in spring before the bluebirds arrive, the nesting box should be cleaned out. Remove any old nesting material and then scrape out dirt and debris with a putty knife or wire brush. Old nesting material should not be left on the ground near the nest
but removed from the area to prevent parasites that can harm baby bluebirds in the nest. Washing out the nesting box with a spray of 1/10 bleach/water will sterilize the box, and it is ready for the season. Thanks for the read.

Celebrate Healthy Vision Month May is Healthy Vision Month (sponsored by the National Eye Institute), so now is a great time to remind you about the importance of protecting and preserving one of your most important senses: your sight. Simply put, eye disease is tricky because often the symptoms don’t become apparent until they have progressed far beyond the early stages. Below you’ll find some tips on how to best ensure you have healthy vision that lasts a lifetime. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam. A comprehensive eye exam should include dilated testing. Many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration often have no symptoms. A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages. Practice eye safety. Wear eye protection when playing sports, doing activities around the house, or working around hazardous materials. Keep in mind that contacts don’t protect your eyes from exposure to chemicals, metal and other potentially harmful elements. Invest in a pair of goggles that fit your face well, available at some sporting goods and hardware stores. Know your family’s eye health history. If you have a family history of macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye-related disease, you have an increased risk of getting the same disease. If you fall into this category, make sure you schedule comprehensive eye exams regularly. Wash your hands and contacts properly. This will help prevent eye infection as well as accidental exposure to harmful materials. Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Some of the sun’s effects on the eyes include: cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium Don’t smoke. We all know smoking hurts our whole body, but don’t discount the effect it has on our eyes. Tobacco increases your risk for macular degeneration, cataracts and optic nerve damage. Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity increases an individual’s risk for Type II Diabetes and subsequent vision complications as well. Diabetic retinopathy can severely damage your eyesight and potentially cause blindness. Celebrate Healthy Vision Month by taking these steps today. You’ll help ensure your eyes are healthy and that you’re seeing well for a lifetime. If you haven’t had an exam for some time, schedule one this month. And don’t forget to spread the word to your family, friends, and colleagues. We are proud to be celebrating
of vision care focused on you For more information contact Kristen Cameron, Burnt Hills Optical, 793 Rt. 50 Burnt Hills, 399-6130 or visit www.burnthillsoptical.com yourhometowne@gmail.com | 518.265.1105
