Rock “N” Roll for Life For What it’s Worth Buffalo Springfield

There’s something happening here But what it is ain’t exactly clear There’s a man with a gun over there Telling me I got to beware

I can remember listening to this song as a little kid. WPTR was one of the few stations on the radio, and Boom Boom Brannigan, our local DJ, loved Rock. My brother had been drafted when I was 8, so I listened to the music with purpose. The Viet Nam War continued long after this picture was taken.

What a field day for the heat (Ooh ooh ooh) A thousand people in the street (Ooh ooh ooh) Singing songs and they carrying signs (Ooh ooh ooh) Mostly say, “Hooray for our side” (Ooh ooh ooh)

Then the 80’s came along with bad perms and “Another Brick in the Wall” (Pink Floyd)

We don’t need no education We don’t need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teacher, leave them kids alone Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone

If you don’t eat yer meat, you can’t have any pudding How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat yer meat? You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!

Usher in the 90’s - I will say that the 90’s music was lame in the sociological aspects of people. I don’t know if people were just happier or MTV had mesmerized everyone in the 80s, by the 90s people were used to being told what a song is about. Because the video acted out the song, songs were simpler. I had my favorites. Laura Branigan “Moonlight on the Water “ Steve Winwood “Back in the High Life”. 2000’s , Bush Era, War, 911, brought out the old and new rockers. From Neil Young to Patty Smith, Rock and Rollers were raging against the machine. REM drew the “Final Straw” “As I raise my head to broadcast my objection As your latest triumph draws the final straw Who died and lifted you up to perfection? And what silenced me is written into law 2022 “This Has Gotta Stop” Eric Clapton This has gotta stop Enough is enough I can’t take this BS any longer It’s gone far enough If you wanna claim my soul You’ll have to come and break down this door I knew that something was going on wrong When you started laying down the law 4 | Your Hometowne

Now it’s 2022, just look at all we’ve been through. Music has guided me through all of these years. As the smoke screen clears, and we’re being told to live in fear, it has become blatantly clear. I wll leave you with one of my favorite artists. Van Morrison one of his newest songs. Van Morrison 2021

“Born to be Free” Well, well the birds in the the trees Know something we can’t see ‘Cos they know, we were born, to be free Don’t need the government cramping my style Give them an inch, they take a mile Take you in with a phony smile, wouldn’t you agree?

For what it’s worth

Chiropractic for kids! Birth through age 6 is the most influential period of growth and development, as the brain records all sensory experiences as well as learning motor and sensory developmental skillsthrough environmental and social cues. Damage at any stage prior to the preliminary development of these functions will cause compensatory patterns to either be learned or occur naturally to allow us to interact with our environment to the best of our ability. It is important to realize that perceptions acquired before the age of 6 become the fundamental subconscious programs that shape character the of an individual’s life.

If you’ve said these statements, chiropractic can help!

These are all signs of sympathetic dominance, birth trauma, and tension. A chiropractic checkup may be one of the most important checkups your child ever has! Health problems in childhood or even adulthood have been traced back to spinal and structural damage at birth. Doctors of Chiropractic love to see the whole family, from babies to grandparents, coming in for checkups. Many “chiropractic families” report having more energy, improved health and less dependency on drugs and medications. It is not unusual to hear a parent state that since starting chiropractic care their children get sick less frequently and less severely, have less ear infections and take less antibiotics and other drugs than their classmates. Because it is possible to have subluxations yet be symptom-free, all children (and their parents!) need periodic chiropractic checkups.

Call or text us today to schedule a visit for your family!

Turn the page Wow, what a roller coaster of a ride last year was! Just when you were ready to get off the crazy ride it would start all over again. Sometimes wishing we could have a re-do. A chance to step off of the whirling ride to gather our thoughts and regain our composure. There have been many times I wished for a re-do. Knowing full well that some things you just don’t get to do again.

518-399-5516

www.ritfondaheatingcooling.com

A new year gives us an opportunity. Maybe not a re-do, but a chance to DO rather than wishing to re-do. What did we do last year on that crazy ride? We buckled up and held on! We turned the page. A new year is much like a good book. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. We start reading with great anticipation. Sitting in your comfy chair. A bookmark ready to hold your place. As the story unfolds you are drawn into the backdrop and the characters. When the pages turn and the chapters fall into place we become absorbed in it. Word by word the chapters build and the pages turn

What is your story this year? How will you write your chapters? When you are on a whirlwind of a ride, step away and put a bookmark in it. Take a few moments and reevaluate the plot. Look for opportunities to DO now rather than to re-do later. You may not get that chance. There are no guarantees your story will be a bestseller. However, it will be yours. So hold on and buckle up! Make it the best you can page by page.

As always I wish you peace, let’s make it a wonderful New Year! Pattie Rakvica - Nutritional Therapist rakvicahealth@gmail.com 8 | Your Hometowne

New York State Electricity Rates To Skyrocket New York Electricity Prices Increasing

Solar As The Solution

If you are a homeowner in New York State, then you are dealing with increased prices for your utility bills.

Going solar is no longer just an environmental decision for people that are focused on decreasing their carbon footprint. It’s also about gaining energy independence by removing all the variables that come with depending on them as their sole power source.

Natural gas prices are expected to increase 30% – 50% from last year due to increasing commodity prices. While New York State is actively taking steps to incorporate more renewable energy sources to offset its reliance on fossil fuel generated electricity, it still generates 2/3 of its electrical supply from natural gasfired power plants. This means as natural gas prices increase - so will electricity rates! Rising commodity prices and inflation have hit the energy industry hard. While authorities are confident about having enough electrical supply to avoid blackouts, there is little they can do to combat the rising prices.

Making the one-time investment into solar secures homeowners energy independence from the ongoing global effects causing price fluctuations. You have the ability to take back control by investing in your own energy independence through solar while simultaneously doing right for the environment. ONLINE AND DO-IT-YOURSELF (DIY) ESTATE PLANNING With the number of online and do-it-yourself (DIY) legal providers continuing to grow, you may be wondering if you could do your estate planning yourself. The advertising is seductive: attorneys use similar forms, the cost is significantly less than hiring an attorney, and many of these websites and kits are created by attorneys. Most professionals know that DIY estate planning can lead to disaster. While completing the forms may seem easy, a single mistake or omission can have far-reaching complications. Your heirs could end up disappointed and confused. The cost of legal help to try to sort things out after the fact may be more than it would have cost to have the Will professionally prepared in the first place. Those contemplating the DIY route should consider the following: • Legal Expertise: Experienced estate planning attorneys have the technical expertise to draft documents correctly. Yes, they may use pre-drafted forms to start from, but they know what to change and how to change it to make your plan work the way you want. They also understand the technical terms and legal requirements. Laws vary greatly from state to state, and a DIY program may not tell you everything you need to know for New York or another state in which you have property.

• Coordination of Assets: A will only controls assets that are titled in your name individually with no valid beneficiary named. An experience estate planning attorney will know how to coordinate non-probate assets so that they are distributed the way you want to those you want to have them. • Tax Planning: While estate tax no longer affects many of my clients, income tax and Medicaid planning is an important consideration with gifts and estates. • Complexity and Cost: Most people think their estate planning will be simple. You may not know that without the guidance and counseling of an experienced attorney that you need some personalization. It is far better to spend a little more now and make sure your plan is created correctly, than to try to save a few dollars and have things turn out badly later. You won’t be around then to straighten things out. Don’t you think you owe it to those you love to do this the right way?

Kathleen M. Toombs, Esq. 157 Barrett Street, Schenectady, NY 12305 (518) 688-2846 Attorney Advertising

• Counseling: Attorneys are called “counselors at law” for a reason. Most estate planning attorneys have counseled many families and they have seen the results of proper and improper planning. An experienced attorney can guide you with delicate decisions, including minor children or disabled family members, how to provide for your children fairly (which may not be equally), and how you can protect an inheritance from creditors and irresponsible spending. • Explanation of Intentions: Any confusion or inconsistency as to what your written intentions were after you are gone can lead to hard feelings and costly litigation by your beneficiaries and even invalidate your documents. 14 | Your Hometowne

Looking For a New Dentist? Dear Hometowne reader, Are you in the market for a new dentist? At Lake Hill Dental Care, we strive to go above and beyond to exceed your expectations. We are so proud of our many five-star online reviews, here are just a few from google reviews; “Every visit that we have had at Lake Hill Dental has been wonderful. They are kind, caring, and informed and take really good care of their patients. We have never had a better experience with a dentist office, and we are so happy to have found them. Thank you so much, Lake Hill Dental!” “After my first visit there I cannot tell you how happy I am with the great people there! The staff was courteous and friendly. They were very upbeat and caring. The doc herself was totally awesome she diagnosed my problem gave me distinct options with reassurance a plan would be made. They are awesome. Have already recommended other family members to them.”

“I have had bad experiences with dentist since i was 5 which has made me not go in many years. For a week I was living with a bad tooth that I knew needed to be pulled. Dr. Denning and his whole staff including reception was overwhelming sweet to me the assistant even held my hand when he was numbing me. He even numbed me more so i wouldn’t feel a thing. But the best part was i called MANY offices and non could get me in for an emergency...they did even though I didn’t have insurance... Thank you to them you took my pain away and now made me not afraid of a dentist. I will be going to them for now on.” Nothing makes us happier than knowing that we are helping people achieve a healthy smile in the most pleasant atmosphere possible. We provide most dental services under one roof and cater to people of all ages. We also participate with most insurances and have several convenient payment options. If you or someone you know is in the market for a new dentist, especially if it is an emergency please give us a call today. Glenville Hill Fire District has a New UTV The Glenville Hill Fire District No. 8 dedicated their Wildland Fire, Search and Rescue UTV apparatus project on Wednesday, January 19th at the firehouse located at the corner of Church and Ridge Roads in the Town of Glenville. The project, funded completely through private donations, includes major support of the Oliver B. Merlyn Foundation and others, and will permit the District to better support the Glenville community on the western edge of Schenectady County. The District covers 460 acres of forever-wild town park land that provides over 10 miles of hiking trails and approximately 4,400 acres of privately owned multiuse forested acreage used for recreational hiking, x-country skiing, snowshoeing, hunting and shooting sports and farming. The District supports critical infrastructure including power distribution substations, municipal water system buildings, pump stations and storage tanks, a natural gas pipeline, two-way communication towers and high-tension power transmission lines that are not readily accessible by public roads and large fire apparatus. The UTV project will permit Fire, Search and Rescue volunteer teams to significantly reduce response time in reaching a wildland fire location or injured persons and provide ease of extrication of injured persons versus requiring multiple crews performing a ‘hand’ carry-out. The UTV also provides the ability to carry large quantities of firefighting water and foam to remote woodlot fires versus backpack reservoirs hand carried by first responders. The enclosed trailer will serve as an on-scene mobile command center for fire, search and rescue missions where responders can meet/regroup until deployed during inclement weather emergencies.

Setting up a Winter Bird Feeding Station in New York If you have House Finches, or even forest-loving Purple Finches, visiting your feeders regularly, you may want a tube feeder with black oil sunflower seeds. But because there are so many ground-feeding sparrows in New York in winter, you probably want a low platform feeder. This feeder is best filled with cheaper mixed seeds that the sparrows and doves will eat.

To protect from rain and snow, your bird feeders should have large, maybe even over-sized, roofs to keep out the weather. Birds in winter need water. Especially do birds need drinking water during several days of below-freezing weather. Since this is a regular occurrence in many parts of New York, a bird bath with heater should be on your list of necessities for winter bird feeding.

And a hopper feeder will keep seeds drier during wet periods of winter. You can feed black oil sunflower seeds or hulled sunflower seeds in these. If squirrels are a problem then a hopper feeder with safflower seeds may attract Northern Cardinals and deter squirrels. Please note that different people have much different results with safflower seeds. Some say it works great. Others say that the cardinals don't eat it or the squirrels do. It may be worth a try before you spend big on a "squirrel-proof" bird feeder that may or may not work as advertised.

A Heated Bird Bath will make all the birds love you!

The Holiday Charities Once Again Served Our Community Well -PETER P. “PETE” BARDUNIAS, Senior Vice President, Community Advancement

O: 518.431.1408 C: 518.522.7251

This past December, the Southern Saratoga County Chamber Angels once again helped 450 area children enjoy a special and blessed Holiday. 189 area families were recipients of the generosity of the many volunteers, supporters and sponsors who have helped them achieve their mission for three-plus decades. Working in partnership with the Capital Region Chamber/Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, their virtual silent auction event brought in almost $10,000 between items sold and donations made - at least $8600 in PayPal donations alone, not including the items sold and donations made through the auction website. The Angels are led by volunteer President Lori Jones, who steers the group with her years of experience and attention to detail that ensures that every child who is approved for support receives their holiday gift list. It’s a tough job helping Santa out this way every year, but the Angels are up to the task!

The Stewarts Shops Holiday Match program, which runs from Thanksgiving until Christmas, collected $1,007,879 from customers, matched with same amount by the company for a total of $2,015,758 for children’s charities all over the state of New York covered by Stewart’s vast network of 354 convenience stores. The program has been providing assistance to area charities since 1986, concentrating on organizations which benefit children under 18, and preferably groups which benefit kids all year long, not just at the holidays. There are no administrative costs and 100% of funds raised benefit local, nonprofit children’s organizations.

Things of My Very Own (243-249 Green St, Schenectady, (518) 630-5143, tomvo.org) received a generous donation from the Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match in order to support the organization’s work of providing basic necessities to children in crisis situations. Stewart’s Shops has been a sponsor of Things of My Very Own for over a decade. These are but some of the great community efforts that bring good cheer and support to those in need at the Holidays and all year long. It’s a great reason to love being here in the Capital Region, because no matter what level of social strata, there is a place for everyone. We are only a short way into 2022 – here’s hoping that this year is full of optimism and excitement for a brightfuture!

One of the less-talked-about facets of our wonderful Capitalist, Free Enterprise system is the altruism by area businesses that we see on display during the just-concluded Holiday season. Also, the Capital Region is blessed with many charities which really shine at this time of year. We should recognize their efforts because they are the unsung heroes of our community and deliver for the needy among us time and time again. Pioneer Bank presented $3000 donations to each of 21 local nonprofits as part of their “Helping Kids be Kids” charitable giving program. With these donations, Pioneer has now exceeded $1 million in giving to the Capital Region community since its Charitable Foundation was launched in 2018. The donations were made during a check presentation ceremony at Pioneer’s headquarters in Albany. “On behalf of an outstanding team that is actively engaged in contributing to the success of the Capital Region, I am privileged to present these worthy organizations with financial support to enhance the vital programs and services they provide,” said Thomas L. Amell, President/CEO of Pioneer. “These are truly investments in our most valuable asset – our young people – and in ‘helping kids be kids,’ we are also proud to strengthen families and communities, particularly amid the continuing challenges brought by the pandemic.” Each of the nonprofit organizations receiving donations are located in, and serve residents of, the Capital Region. They include: AIM Services, Inc., Autism Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region, Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady, Capital District YMCA, CEO, Crossroads Center for Children, Family and Child Services of Schenectady, 15LOVE, Homeless and Travelers Aid Society (HATAS), Hope 7, Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club, Living Resources, Northern Rivers, Rensselaer County Department for Youth, SEAT Center, Things of My Very Own, Troy Youth Association, Unity House, Vanderheyden, and Wildwood Programs. Organizations seeking charitable requests establish a Pioneer employee link prior to the request being completed; the employee then assists with submitting a request for consideration. Importantly, all administrative costs of the Foundation are covered by Pioneer, ensuring that 100% of all donations go directly to local charitalbe organizations.

Should inflation affect your investment moves? As you know, inflation heated up in 2021, following years of pretty stable – and low – numbers. And now, early in 2022, we’re still seeing elevated prices. As a consumer, you may need to adjust your activities somewhat, but as an investor, how should you respond to inflation? First, it helps to know the causes of this recent inflationary spike. Essentially, it’s a case of basic economics – strong demand for goods meeting inadequate supply, caused by material and labor shortages, along with shipping and delivery logjams. In other words, too many dollars chasing too few goods. Once the supply chain issues begin to ease and consumer spending moves from goods to services as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, it’s likely that inflation will moderate, but it may still stay above pre-pandemic levels throughout 2022. Given this outlook, you may want to review your investment portfolio. First, consider stocks. Generally speaking, stocks can do well in inflationary periods because companies’ revenues and earnings may increase along with inflation. But some sectors of the stock market typically do better than others during inflationary times. Companies that can pass along higher costs to consumers due to strong demand for their goods – such as firms that produce building materials or supply steel or other commodities to other businesses – can do well. Conversely, companies that sell nonessential goods and services, such as appliances, athletic apparel and entertainment, may struggle more when prices are rising.

Of course, it’s still a good idea to own a variety of stocks from various industries because it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on any one sector. And to help counteract the effects of rising prices, you might also consider investing in companies that have a long track record of paying and raising stock dividends. (Keep in mind, though, that these companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.) Apart from stocks, how can inflation affect other types of investments? Think about bonds. When you invest in a bond, you receive regular interest payments until the bond matures. But these payments stay the same, so, over time, rising inflation can eat into your bond’s future income, which may also cause the price of your bond to drop – a concern if you decide to sell the bond before it matures. The impact of inflation is especially sharp on the price of longer-term bonds because of the cumulative loss of purchasing power. However, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) can provide some protection against inflation. The face value, or principal amount, of each TIPS is $1,000, but this principal is adjusted based on changes in the U.S. Consumer Price Index. So, during periods of inflation, your principal will increase, also increasing your interest payments. When inflation drops, though, your principal and interest payments will decrease, but you’ll never receive less than the original principal value when the TIPS mature. Talk to your financial advisor to determine if TIPS may be appropriate for you. Ultimately, inflation may indeed be something to consider when managing your investments. But other factors – especially your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals – should still be the driving force behind your investment decisions. A solid investment strategy can serve you well, regardless of whether prices move up or down. Chris Nyhan runs the Edward Jones office in Burnt Hills, NY.
