STIP Project BR-0079 GREENSBORO - The N.C. Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting on its proposed plan to replace the bridge on Tuscaloosa Street over South O’Henry Boulevard in Greensboro. The purpose of the project is to replace the existing bridge with a new, sturdier structure that accommodates wider sidewalks and bicycle lanes, and provides a greater vertical clearance for vehicles traveling below the structure on South O’Henry Boulevard. Project details and maps can be found on the NCDOT project web page publicinput.com/tuscaloosa-st-greensboro. The information will be available at the meeting allowing for one-on-one discussions with engineers, but there will be no formal presentation. To say that SUMMER OF THE SHARK is autobiographical is hardly an understatement. Summer of the Shark: Nostalgia with bite

eaders of this publication may well remember Michael DiVitto Kelly as the recreation center supervisor at the Old Town Neighborhood Mark Burger Center in WinstonSalem, where he inaugurated the “Old Contributor Town Film Series,” which offered free screenings of movies on a weekly basis, often tied to a similar genre or theme. The series, which kicked off in January 2023, was duly covered in these pages until Kelly left the Old Town Neighborhood Center last year, and the series left with him. Kelly, who had also spearheaded a similar film series when he worked at the Broward County Library System in South Florida, is undeniably a lifelong, die-hard film buff. He’s also a published author and an artist whose works are likewise inspired by his love of film, as well as by his own personal background. Kelly recently completed his latest novel, Sol, a tale of vampires, Florida, Jewish delis, and 1970s baseball. Like all Kelly’s works, Sol is rife with autobiographical touches, pop-culture references, folklore, and sports lore. He is currently working on his fifth novel, tentatively titled The Alley — “a creature-feature tale,” he calls it — set along Alligator Alley in Florida in the summer of 1981. As professional baseball didn’t come to Florida until 1993 with the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins), the national pastime might not figure so prominently this time around. As this marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Jaws, Kelly is promoting one of his earlier novels, Summer of the Shark (originally published in 2020), a wistfully nostalgic coming-of-age fable focusing on Ryan Sullivan, a 12-year-old boy from Ohio who spends his summer vacation on Martha’s Vineyard with his grandfather Artie in 1974. By coincidence, a film is being made on the island, called Jaws … During the summer, Ryan will catch a foul ball at a Boston Red Sox game, survive an actual Great White shark attack (more than once!), be hired as an extra for the film, and meet Veronica, a local girl the same age as he, and just as big WWW.YESWEEKLY.COM

a baseball fan. The novel also encompasses the following summer, when Jaws becomes the biggest hit in Hollywood history, and Ryan’s beloved Cincinnati Reds end up in the World Series playing against those same Red Sox, which is considered by many the most exciting Fall Classic of all time. During the Old Town Film Series last June, Kelly screened both the original film and Jaws 2 (1978) in subsequent weeks. “Jaws will always hold a special place in my heart,” Kelly affirmed. “It’s why I got into sharks, marine life, snorkeling, and diving. I think the film means a lot to many people because it was the first true blockbuster — a cultural phenomenon. It’s hard to believe now, but the summer was a dead zone for films. That all changed with Jaws. “There are many aspects of Summer of the Shark that were inspired by my own life: My dad owned a record store, and he gave me the Jaws soundtrack on vinyl. I still have it today — complete with an iron-on Jaws patch! I still treasure it. I wrote to (composer) John Williams stating how much I loved the film score. He sent back a signed autograph, which is tucked inside the record sleeve. I’ve owned about every format, too: The record, cassette, and three CDs of the score. It’s such an integral part of the film. It’s another character.”

Other personal elements? “I still root for my Bengals and Reds,” Kelly said. “Unfortunately, the Reds have lingered in the middle of the pack or near the basement of the NL Central for so long. I remember vividly when they swept the A’s in the 1990 World Series, but since then, they’ve been a listing ship. Despite hiring a Hall of Fame manager this year — Terry Francona — I expect them to hover around the .500 mark for the rest of the season. The 1975 World Series was one of the best, and I wanted to weave that into the novel. I’m happy with how it turned out. I’ve even turned the novel into a screenplay. I think it would make a terrific film, a real treat for those who like nostalgia.” Later this month, Kelly will be traveling back to Martha’s Vineyard for the various festivities celebrating the 50th birthday of Jaws, where he’ll be hosting three shark craft programs and three book talks. “My wife Andrea and I spent close to 25 years in Florida,” he said. “Our kids were

born there. I still like the Sunshine State, preferably the west coast. It became so overcrowded in the Fort Lauderdale area and, of course, it was always hot and humid. We ended up relocating to Cobb County, Georgia, near Atlanta. I was managing a large library branch and enjoyed it, but we decided it wasn’t where we wanted to be.” When visiting Winston-Salem to tour some of the colleges with their daughter, they liked the region so much that, although their daughter went to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design), they decided to relocate here. “We love the area,” he said. “It’s chill, with a great art scene, which is great since we’re both artists. We’ve been doing lots of artwork. My wife and I have participated in ArtsCrush a few times and love the crowd. THE MARTHA BASSETT SHOW RETURNS TO TANGLEWOOD PARK ON JUNE 22

SUBMITTED BY THE ARTS COUNCIL OF WINSTON-SALEM & FORSYTH COUNTY The Martha Bassett Show returns to Tanglewood Park for a live, public taping on Sunday, June 22. This free outdoor concert is the final event of the season for Arts Council and the Forsyth County Government’s Parks Concert Series, now in its tenth year. The Martha Bassett Show is a weekly radio program that airs on 88.5 WFDD each Saturday at 7 p.m. Typically recorded live at the historic Reeves Theatre in Elkin, this special “road show” will be performed and recorded at the Tanglewood Park Band Shell. The radio program is helmed by one of the state’s most distinguished musicians, Martha Bassett, and features national artists and fresh local faces collaborating in song and conversation. Musical guests for this concert include Ettore Buzzini, a young Swiss-American bluegrass prodigy, and Secret Monkey Weekend, a group known as “America’s coolest family band.” Buzzini has performed widely at bluegrass competitions, MerleFest, FloydFest, and on PBS’s Woodsongs (Old Time Radio Hour). In 2024, he won the prestigious FreshGrass Award with an original banjo composition at the age of 16. Secret Monkey Weekend, celebrating the release of their latest album on June 13, is comprised of N.C. rock luminary Jefferson Hart and his two stepdaughters, Ella and Lila Brown-Hart. Tanglewood Park takes place on Sunday, June 22 at the Tanglewood Park Band Shell (4061 Clemmons Rd., Clemmons, NC). Free parking is available adjacent to the band shell. The Rise & Fall of Derwin Montgomery

ports enthusiasts often speculate as to how great a particular player would have been had he not gotten injured early on in his career. Such discussions are Jim Longworth pointless and resolve nothing, except perhaps when the sport Longworth under consideration at Large is politics, and only then when we have definitive measurements at our disposal to make an educated analysis. John Edwards, Gary Hart, and Cal Cunningham all come to mind. All three were on a clear path to higher office, but their careers were derailed by self-inflicted injuries caused by a lapse in judgement. And that brings me to Derwin Montgomery. At age 21, Derwin became the youngest person ever elected to Winston-Salem City Council where he served for three terms. That catapulted him to the State House of Representatives and a 2020 run for Congress in the newly formed 6th district. He was outmatched and outspent in the Democratic primary losing to Kathy Manning who would go on to win the general election. Nevertheless, Derwin’s political star was still on the rise. I first met Derwin in February 2020 when he appeared on Triad Today to

discuss his candidacy for Congress. He was extremely articulate and informed about the issues, chief among them were healthcare, pre-K education, and the plight of the homeless. The latter was a topic in his wheelhouse because, at the time, he was running the WinstonSalem based Bethesda Center for the Homeless. “The work I do every day with the homeless really shapes my political understanding, and how I approach policy through the lens of equity and justice,” he told me. Under Derwin’s leadership, the center provided meals, shelter, and social resources to hundreds of homeless people. “I once came across a veteran who had been dishonorably discharged from the military for behavioral health issues which were never addressed, so we helped him navigate through the system to get the support he needed.” I’ve interviewed tens of thousands of people over the past 50 years, and I’ve developed a pretty good bullshit meter. In my opinion, Derwin was the real deal. He was passionate about causes that affect everyday folks, and he displayed honest sincerity in his answers. As it turns out my bullshit meter wasn’t properly calibrated that day because, unbeknownst to anyone, in the two years prior to our interview,

Derwin had been taking luxury vacations, visiting gentlemen’s clubs, driving an expensive car, and funneling money to his media company, all at the expense of the homeless people he was supposed to be helping. In 2023 Montgomery was convicted of 15 counts of program fraud, having charged over $26,000 to Bethesda for his various private outings. He was facing up to 10 years in prison but instead cut a plea deal to avoid jail. The terms of his deal meant that 14 of the 15 counts were dismissed, he was put on 5 years probation, and ordered to make restitution and pay fines totaling $60,000. Late last month he was arrested for violating the terms of his probation by failing to make his most recent monthly payment, leaving him $5,500 in

arrears. He is now in federal custody. I am conflicted about the plight of Derwin Montgomery. On the one hand, he embezzled money from an agency that helps homeless folks, and he deserved to be punished for it. On the other hand, he did a lot to help those folks while he ran Bethesda Center. I also question the logic of the Court imposing hefty fines which made it more difficult for Derwin to make direct restitution. Finally, it is difficult for me to admit that I was entirely wrong about his sincerity and his compassion for those less fortunate. Yes, he abused his position and broke the law, but he did a lot of good for a lot of people, so perhaps he can work his way through this mess and one day manage to regain his status as a valued public servant. Call me crazy, but I still believe in the guy. ! Swimming with sharks

ere it is, 50 years since Jaws was released, and it’s still not safe to go back in the water. The latest big-screen Mark Burger reason is Dangerous Animals, which marks director Sean Contributor Byrne’s third feature and first since The Devil’s Candy a full decade ago. While not comparable to Spielberg’s classic — and, honestly, what is? — it’s still a worthy, entertaining seafaring shocker with plenty of gory thrills both in and out of the water. Although the various sharks in the film are certainly lethal, the most dangerous animal on display here is Bruce Tucker (Jai Courtney), a gregarious fisherman who offers shark cage excursions to tourists. The problem is that he often foregoes the cage and dangles his unfortunate customers over the shark-infested waters from a harness, filming their death throes with his trusty camcorder. He’s a regular Hannibal Lecter of the high seas. Yellowstone’s Hassie Harrison is Tucker’s latest captive, an expatriate American surfer named Zephyr. The leggy, plucky Zephyr is determined to escape Tucker’s clutches, and her efforts to that end are both grueling and gruesome. Those viewers expecting non-stop shark attacks may be disappointed — initially — that much of the narrative focuses on the interplay between Courtney and Harrison. But Nick Lepard’s script (his first) offers some nimble and biting (no pun intended) exchanges between the two that enhance the film’s suspense. Dangerous Animals, which boasts spectacular cinematography by Shelley Farthing-Dawe and an effective score by Michael Yezerski, is less a riff on Jaws than a modern-day variation on one of the very first Jaws rip-offs, William Grefe’s Floridalensed Mako: Jaws of Death (1976), starring Richard Jaeckel as a maniac who feeds his foes to the titular mako shark, with whom he has a psychic connection. This film is superior in every way, which admittedly wouldn’t take much. Throughout his career, Courtney has specialized in square-jawed, stolid characters (the Divergent films, Termina-

tor Genisys, etc.), but here he’s nothing short of a revelation. Having packed on a few pounds and shed some mannerisms, he’s great fun as the loquacious loon who revels in his every demented move. He’s unashamedly proud of his nefarious deeds, no matter how heinous. He’s a baddie in every sense of the term. Harrison plays Zephyr in a straightforward, no-nonsense fashion. No hapless victim is she, as she tirelessly tries to turn the tables on her tormentor. There’s also good work from Josh Heuston as Moses, who suspects something is amiss when Zephyr vanishes without a trace from the beach where she was to go surfing the morning after their one-night stand. With no help from the local police, he plays amateur sleuth … and, naturally, this puts him in harm’s way, too. As for the sharks, which only have a limited amount of screentime, they have been photographed in a graceful, even beatific fashion that doesn’t diminish their fearfulness. They’re not the bad guys here. They just do what sharks do: Swim and eat. As has been proven time and again, the most dangerous animal of all is man. Dangerous Animals is hair-raising fun and a diverting summer entertainment — but only for those who can take it. The squeamish are hereby forewarned: Stay out of the water. ! ALIEN TERROR (RaroVideo/Kino Lorber): The Blu-ray bow ($29.95 retail) of writer/co-producer/director Ciro Ippolito’s woefully unimpressive 1980 debut feature (originally titled Alien 2 sulla Terra and also released as Alien 2: On Earth), a low-rent rip-off of Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien, in which extra-terrestrial beings land on Earth and take over human beings before exploding out of their bodies, with Belinda Mayne the resident “final girl” and future director Michele Soavi among the rapidlydiminishing human contingent. Utterly devoid of suspense or interest, this may have been the first Alien knock-off but it’s surely the worst. Rarely have 84 minutes seemed like such an eternity, and the “twist” ending is a bore. Bonus features include original Italian (with English subtitles) and Englishdubbed audio options, audio commentary, and retrospective interview with filmmaker Eli Roth. Rated R. No stars “AUDIE MURPHY COLLECTION V” (Kino Lorber Studio Classics): The latest Blu-ray triple feature ($49.95 retail) showcasing the film career of Audie Murphy (1925-’71), the most decorated U.S. soldier of World War II who later made a successful transition to big-screen stardom, particularly in Westerns: Walk the Proud Land (1956) co-starring Anne Bancroft, Pat Crowley, and Jay Silverheels (as Geronomo); Seven Ways from Sundown (1960), based on screenwriter Clair Huffaker’s 1959 novel, co-starring Barry Sullivan, John McIntire, and Kenneth Tobey; and Bullet for a Badman (1964), based on Marvin H. Albert’s 1958 novel Renegade Posse, co-starring Darren McGavin and Ruta Lee. Bonus features include audio commentaries and theatrical trailers. BEWARE OF MR. BAKER (Kino Lorber): Writer/producer/director Jay Bulger’s award-winning 2012 feature-documentary debut, based on his Rolling Stone article “The Devil and Ginger Baker,” offers an up-close and personal portrait of the legendary rock drummer Ginger Baker (1939-2019), who found fame playing with Blind Faith and Cream, then saw his life and career collapse under the weight of drug addiction, failed marriages, and financial difficulties — compelling him to flee to South Africa where he lived in a remote compound, featuring interviews with such collaborators and music luminaries as Eric Clapton, Stewart Copeland, Mickey Hart, Simon Kirke, Denny Laine, Marky Ramone, Charlie Watts, Hank Williams III, Steve Winwood, and others. DVD PICK OF THE WEEK: SCENT OF A WOMAN (Shout! Studios/Shout! Factory) It was a foregone conclusion that after eight Oscar nominations, Al Pacino would win the Best Actor Oscar for producer/director Martin Brest’s 1992 comedy/drama, a remake of the 1975 Italian film Profuma di Donna. Despite heavy competition — including Denzel Washington in Malcolm X, Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, and Robert Downey Jr. in Chaplin — and a second nomination that year (Best Supporting Actor in Glengarry Glen Ross), it was high time Pacino finally triumphed … even if this isn’t the best film he was nominated for or the best performance he gave. He was simply the sentimental favorite, and as his character was blind didn’t hurt his Academy chances. That would be Frank Slade, a retired, cynical, hard-drinking U.S. Army colonel and Vietnam veteran (pure Oscar bait!) accompanied and tended by Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell), an affable prep-school student, during the long Thanksgiving weekend. There’s a lot going on in their lives — the film takes 156 minutes to explain everything — but rest assured, things do work out in the end, thanks in large part to the perfect chemistry between the bombastic Pacino (they don’t call him “Big Al” for nothing) and O’Donnell, who more than holds his own with his veteran co-star. Throughout their eventful time together, Slade and Charlie begrudgingly develop a respect for one another that blossoms into friendship. It’s an entertaining, if overlong, journey of self-discovery for these two wildly disparate personalities. A good cast includes Gabrielle Anwar (who performs a memorable tango with Pacino), James Rebhorn, Bradley Whitford, Ron Eldard, June Squibb, Frances Conroy, and Philip Seymour Hoffman (who shines in a small role as Charlie’s smarmy schoolmate), but Pacino and O’Donnell are the whole show — and they make the most of it. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director. For Brest, Scent of a Woman followed on the heels of Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and Midnight Run (1988), making this his third hit in a row. He belatedly followed it with the bloated but reasonably popular Meet Joe Black in 1998 and then the unmitigated disaster that was Gigli (2003), which the studio took out of his hands. That remains Brest’s last film to date, and little has been heard from him since. The “collector’s-edition” 4K Ultra HD combo ($39.98 retail) includes retrospective interviews. Rated R. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES (Kino Lorber Studio Classics): A special-edition Blu-ray ($24.95 retail) of director Bryan Gordon’s flimsy 1991 farce, starring Frank Whaley as the new overnight janitor at a Target store in Atlanta who encounters local rich girl Jennifer Connelly hiding in a dressing room, and a relationship blooms while they battle bumbling burglars Dermot and Kieran Mulroney. Writer/producer John Hughes disowned the film, whose 83-minute running time suggests considerable studio editing. The appealing performances by Whaley and the gorgeous Connelly aren’t enough to warrant a recommendation, while Noble Willingham, Barry Corbin, William Forsythe, John M. Jackson, Jenny O’Hara, and an unbilled John Candy appear fleetingly. Bonus features include audio commentaries, retrospective interviews, and theatrical trailer. Rated PG-13.

DR. JEKYLL VS. THE WEREWOLF (Mondo Macabro/CAV Distributing): Paul Naschy’s fifth stint as tormented werewolf Waldemar Daninsky headlines this oddball 1972 shocker (originally titled Doctor Jekyll y el Hombre Lobo) written by Naschy (under his real name Jacinto Molina) and directed by long-time collaborator Leon Klimovsky, wherein he seeks treatment from the modern-day descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll (fellow genre stalwart Jack Taylor), which cures Waldemar’s lycanthropy but instead transforms him into the lusty, murderous Mr. Hyde. The sight of Naschy’s top-hatted Hyde shuffling along Soho’s red-light district or impetuously pushing a passerby into the Thames River makes for a campy, cult-friendly treat, and this remains one of Naschy’s best-remembered vehicles. The limited-edition 4K Ultra HD combo ($34.95 retail) includes both the Spanish (with

English subtitles) cut and the more explicit English-dubbed version, audio commentary, retrospective and vintage interviews, and more. Rated R. ETERNITY: THE MOVIE (Indican Pictures): The award-winning 2016 feature debut by editor/screenwriter/director Ian Thorpe stars Barrett Crake and Myko Olivier as a clueless pair of aspiring musicians who achieve instant fame as a pop duo but are totally unprepared for the pitfalls such meteoric success presents. This cheerfully bawdy send-up of late-‘80s music benefits from first-timer Chris Ernst’s splashy cinematography and the winning team-up of Crake and Olivier, who strike all the right moves, poses, and attitudes — and any resemblance to Daryl Hall and Joan Oates is hardly coincidental. There are some periodic lulls but much to enjoy, including the supporting performances of singer Nikki Leonti (in her feature debut), Eric Roberts, Martin Kove, and Jon Gries, the latter especially funny as a lascivious record executive. The DVD ($24.99 retail) includes audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, music video, deleted scenes and outtakes, and trailers. “THE KAWAI COMPLEX GUIDE TO MANORS & HOSTEL BEHAVIOR”: COMPLETE COLLECTION (Sentai Entertainment): A self-explanatory two-disc Blu-ray ($59.98 retail) of all 12 episodes from the 2014 season of the anime fantasy series based on Ruri Miyahara’s popular manga series (originally titled Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, which translates to We Are All From Dormitory Kawai) detailing the misadventures of a teenager whose parents go overseas, so he lives on his own at the Kawai Complex boarding house, where he encounters a wide variety of eccentric residents whom he crosses paths with in unexpected ways. In Japanese with English subtitles. SOUR PARTY (Anchor Bay Entertainment): The feature debut of the screenwriting/producing/co-directing duo Amanda Drexton and Michael A. Drexton stars co-producer/story writer Samantha Westervelt and Amanda Drexton as irresponsible, thirtyish malcontents on a desperate quest through Los Angeles to scrounge up enough money to buy an expensive gift for a baby shower the next day, with Reggie Watts, Christopher Rodriguez Marquette, Nathan Owen, and Corey Feldman among those they encounter along the way, available on DVD ($24.95 retail) and Blu-ray ($39.95 retail), each boasting audio commentary and video yearbook. ! WINSTON-SALEM 2ND THEATRE ALLIANCE Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance has taken top billing in YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best awards for the Best Live Theater Venue in Forsyth County. Last year, the Theatre Alliance was preparing to move into its new home in the Arts District at 650 W. Sixth Street, formerly home to the Bluebird Cab Company. The newly renovated site will include a 160-seat theater, a larger lobby and box office for customers, a backstage area, and prop and costume shops. There will be a dedicated space for set construction and an allin-one comprehensive space, as well. Since it began its “Homecoming” Capital Campaign in the fall of

2019, the goal grew to $1.5 million needed to realize the dream of a new theatre. Despite COVID-19, they were able to come up with the bulk of the campaign monies, including the most recent gift of $25,000 from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. While they’d already purchased the West Sixth Street building, they still need $750,000 to finish the renovations and complete the transformation by the deadline of May 2021. The Legacy Venue, a long-term rental the theatre acquired in 2008, had already been renovated from an 88-seat house to a 120-seat house.

Voted BEST Steak in Guilford County It should be no surprise that Cook Out would make the Triad’s Best list. After all, when the governor makes it a common practice to make sure the president leaves with an infamous Cook Out tray, you can say the recognition is a no-brainer. This year, the fast food restaurant is taking the top ribbon for the Best Milkshake, the Best Burgers in Guilford County, the Best Cheap Eats, and the Best Place to Eat After Midnight in Forsyth and Guilford Counties. Founded in Greensboro in 1989, the very first Cook Out location was on Randleman Road. In 1996, the first sit-in Cook Out was opened on North Main Street in High Point, and the tenth Cook Out opened on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem in 1998. In 2010, the restaurant moved outside of North Carolina and opened its first stores in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The business has continued to expand across the nation. In 2022, Cook Out opened its 300th store. The restaurant also took second place for the Best Burgers in Forsyth County. You can’t keep a good thing secret.

Taco Mama in Forsyth County is bringing the heat in this year’s YES! Weekly’s Triad’s Best. Located on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro and Burke Mill Road in Winston-Salem, the casual Mexican-style restaurant chain debuted in Greensboro in 2017. The specialty taco bar originated in Alabama, and the Lawndale location was their flagship franchise here in North Carolina. Since the doors opened, people have been filling the tables and chairs, ordering tacos and tipping back margaritas, long before the North Carolina summer weather came back around. The interior style of the restaurant is eccentric yet classy. Filled with old-school artwork, accompanied by large-scale paintings and an extensive, colorful menu, a brightly lit bicycle, and Edison light bulbs draped from the exposed wooden ceiling create a hipster vibe for authentic Mexican. A vibe that Triad residents have come to expect along with the array of great, affordable food. This year, both locations racked up eight awards in the Triad’s Best. The chain, known for its handcrafted tacos, build-your-own burritos, free toppings and marvelous margaritas, also takes first place in the Best Margaritas in Forsyth and Guilford Counties, and Best Tacos in Forsyth and Guilford Counties. They take second place in the Best Cheap Eats category, Best Mexican Restaurant in Guilford County, and Best Mexican Restaurant in Forsyth County. They came in as runner-up for the Best Patio in Forsyth County.

The Treasure Club chain began in Asheville in 2008 and continued to grow to locations in Greensboro, Hickory and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. “With the first Treasure Club being a success, a demand was being sought for hospitality-driven entertainment. Because of the hospitality model, Treasure Club has been nominated and won numerous awards and still holds the best reviews by the people,” Lexi, the club’s manager, wrote. Treasure Club is known for the various styles of lap dances offered and its “Exotic Limo Ride.” The Treasure Club offers singles and couples “the ultimate night out,” with “the most beautiful entertainers and jaw-dropping pole performances.” It has sports, WTP poker, features, UFC, and holiday-themed events. A new addition to the club is the Treasure Club Game Room, a private room for those interested in anything from Fortnite to Madden and other popular Xbox and PlayStation 4 games. The Treasure Club is open Monday-Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 2 a.m., on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 a.m., and on the weekend from 6:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. The club also won 2nd place for Best Guys Night Out For Fun.

The R&B Soul Picnic Returns to High Point, North Carolina

he second annual North Carolina R&B Soul Picnic is set to return to High Point, bringing with it a celebration of soulful music, mental wellness, and community connection. Organized by York Promotions, the event will take place on June 14 at Oak Hollow Festival Park located at 1841 Eastchester Drive, High Point, NC 27265. Ais York Almahdi, owner of York Promotions, founded the R&B Soul Picnic and hosted the inaugural event in Atlanta in 2022. The event expanded to North Carolina in 2024, with High Point hosting the first-ever R&B Soul Picnic in the state. VOTED BEST BARBECUE RESTAURANT IN GUILFORD COUNTY

UNCSA alumnus Paul Tazewell wins Tony Award for ‘Death Becomes Her’ PRESS RELEASE Paul Tazewell, an alumnus of the School of Design and Production (D&P) at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), won a Tony Award for best costume design of a musical for his work on “Death Becomes Her,” at the 78th annual Tony Awards, presented Sunday night. He becomes only the second costume designer in history to win both a Tony and an Oscar in the same year. The other was Irene Sharaff, in 1952. Earlier this year Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win an Academy Award for costume design for the film Wicked. He was previously nominated for an Oscar for his work on West Side Story and won a Tony Award in 2016 for best costume design of a musical for “Hamilton,” which celebrated its 10th anniversary of that show’s opening with a Tonys medley. Tazewell also has an Emmy for The Wiz Live! (2016), making him threequarters of the way to an EGOT, missing only the Grammy. Tazewell was also the commencement speaker, on May 17, for this year’s UNCSA graduates, telling them to “Design boldly. Perform with searing passion. Create with great conviction. Pride reigns in Winston-Salem

On Saturday, June 14, the annual Pride Winston-Salem Festival, Parade, and Food Truck Rodeo will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Downtown Arts District, with the parade beginning at 11 a.m. on 4th Street. Based on last year’s record attendance, more than 50,000 people are expected to

celebrate. When Winston-Salem’s first Pride parade was held in 1996, approximately 10,000 supporters turned out, but the event also drew 12,000 counter-protesters, and the Triad’s second-largest city did not hold another Pride festival or parade until 2011, when it met less opposition, but drew only 1,500. There was no parade in 2012. Since 2013, there has been one every year except 2020 and 2021, when all municipal celebrations were canceled due to the pandemic. 12,000 attended in 2014. A decade later, that number more than quadrupled, with last year’s parade drawing a record 56,000 celebrants, similar to the attendance at Greensboro Pride three months later. Weekly article “Greensboro gets Festive with Pride,” which also traces the origin and history

of such celebrations across the U.S.) Winston-Salem held its first Pride Festival 10 years before Greensboro did, and drew more celebrants in 1996 than the 400 who attended Greensboro’s first Pride festival in LeBauer Park in 2006. But Winston-Salem has never received a perfect 100% score of LGBTQ+ equality on the Municipality Equality Index from The Human Rights Commission (HRC), whereas Greensboro has every year from 2021 to 2024. Winston ranked 92% in 2024, 90% in 2023, 92% in 2022, and 87% in 2021 (in 2020, Winston’s score was 54% and Greensboro’s was 79%). In 2023, the City of Winston-Salem apologized for removing an LGBTQ+ Pride logo from its Facebook page, and the Pride flag outside of city hall on North Main Street was vandalized. Since then, legislatures have attempted to roll back LGBTQ+ protections across the nation. On Jan. 20, Lambda Legal condemned what that organization called “a barrage of executive orders targeting LGBTQ+ people,” and the ACLU is currently tracking the progress of eight bills targeting LGBTQ+ rights in North Carolina. The Grand Marshal of this year’s Pride Winston-Salem parade is Jamie Lawson, artistic director of the Winston-Salem Theater Alliance. Lawson told YES! Weekly that he is proud to be serving in this role at such a pivotal time in LGBTQ+ history. “The LGBTQIA community has always faced oppression and opposition; we are accustomed to fighting for our rights. The latest BS just adds to our lengthy to-do list. What is different since

November 2024, and actually, since 2017, is, as a human race, we seem to have lost the compassion and empathy we have spent decades to acquire and worked to hone.” Lawson cited U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s June 3 order that the United States Naval Ship Harvey Milk be renamed to “reestablish warrior culture,” an announcement intentionally timed to take place during Pride Month. USS Harvey Milk is one of the John Lewis-class support ships named after civil rights leaders, in this case, the assassinated San Francisco activist and Navy veteran who was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. “The removal of Harvey Milk’s name from a naval battleship during Pride month is not only an act of disrespect, but also an act of evil. It is not the act of a government focused on the good of all people. It will not be tolerated by the community. If any administration thinks that type of deconstruction of our icons, not to mention of a person who defended our country, is permissible, woe unto them. Riling a minority that is conditioned to fight is really not something a smart person wants to do.” While citing the renaming of the ship and the removal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) incentives by corporations and government offices as “small victories” for those who oppose LGBTQ+ rights and protections, Lawson said that the battle against those repressive rollbacks “rages on and always will.” “When hate for another human being is displayed proudly and freely, when all an individual has done is be himself,

causing no harm or ill will, and when we allow unprovoked vitriol and rage to spawn violence toward any individual or group, it speaks volumes about the work we need to do. Has a lot changed since November? No. Do we feel more at will to speak our minds against those different than we are? For certain. Also for certain: I feel I speak for all of my LGBTQIA brothers and sisters when I say we will not be silenced, suppressed, or stopped. We are survivors.” Pride Winston-Salem President Jerry Morin agreed. “Given the current political environment and the dismantling of LGBTQ+IA rights that we have fought years for, we see increased challenges in creating and maintaining a safe space for our community. Many in the community don’t feel safe in large public gatherings. We have taken additional precautions working in conjunction with the Winston-Salem Police Department and Forsyth County Sheriff ’s Office. Many of those precautions we will not disclose. However, both law enforcements have been supporters of the Pride festival and parade and are familiar with the challenges we face. You will see a strong uniformed presence at both the parade and festival. ‘Brandon Sadler: The Path of Totality’ Opens July 10 at NCMA Winston-Salem PRESS RELEASE North Carolina Museum of Art, WinstonSalem (formerly SECCA) is proud to present “Brandon Sadler: The Path of Totality, Chapter One – Bathed in Shadow,” on view July 10 through Dec. 27, 2025, in Potter Gallery at NCMA Winston-Salem. An opening reception with the artist and curator will be held Thursday, July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m., with remarks at 6:30 p.m. The museum is part of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “The Path of Totality” is an ongoing episodic narrative series made up of figurative and calligraphic works that reflect Sadler’s diverse passion for storytelling, ink painting, and East Asian art forms. By adapting “shufa,” the art of Chinese brush character writing, he transforms the gallery into an immersive journey of mastering a medium through the three perfections: poetry, painting, and calligraphy. Inspired by Sadler’s passion for worldbuilding that combines calligraphy with figurative painting, “The Path of Totality” explores a mythical universe inhabited by beings who can cultivate cosmic energy and create realities through written language. With several newly created paintings by the artist, “Chapter One – Bathed in Shadow” specifically investigates the concept of supreme love, an all-encompassing and ever-expanding force that permeates everything beyond space and time. “This exhibition is a culmination of Brandon’s work over the past few years, emphasizing his cross-cultural storytelling and world-building,” said Maya Brooks, associate curator of Contemporary Art at the NCMA. “I’m excited for our audience to get to know Brandon, because many have probably seen his work in popular settings [Marvel’s Black Panther and his public murals], but they may not have seen his work in a more immersive exhibition. I’ve personally appreciated working with Brandon because he has a very clear vision and understanding of his practice that translates to the overall narrative of ‘The Path of Totality.’”

Brandon Sadler is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Atlanta, Ga. He graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BFA in Illustration.
