NORTH CAROLINA STREET HEAT

J.O.T. Records founder and member of North Carolina Street Heat James Terry (aka Grande Gato) announced that the group has a new reggaeton album out this month called “Reggaeton Para Vida.”

The album is now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Tidal and C.D. North Carolina Street Heat is composed of Grande Gato and his wife Bonita Senorita (aka Ms. Crystal), Jonnotty, Firemarshall and Don Caban.

Terry said the group had performed songs from the new album at various nightclubs in both North Carolina and Miami. Terry also said North Carolina Street Heat would be touring internationally, for the first time, with a show in Cuba on Memorial Day weekend of this year. He said the group would be performing the song “Tengo mi Pasaporte.” Terry said North Carolinians and Winston-Salem fans should not to fret because Street Heat will be performing on Oct. 1 at The Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, located at 2825 University Pkwy. in Winston-Salem.

“We’ve been doing Miami gigs for years, and we have performed the reggaeton down there, and eventually we made some Cuban connections down there, and one guy I have been talking to we have finally set it up,” Terry said. “It is funny; it will be our first international show, I am really excited for that.”

Terry also said North Carolina Street Heat has their own line of shoes now. As a part of “Grande Gato Gear,” the shoes are black, leather tennis shoes made in Italy with the North Carolina Street Heat logo on the top. Terry said at the moment, the shoes are only available in the low-top form, but he will be designing a high top version soon.

“I’ve always been kind of dabbling in clothing for the group,” Terry said. “We

started out with T-shirts at first, then we got into hats, and then I started dabbling in leather, then I tried my hand at shoes, and I got a good response for it when I posted it on Facebook.”

Terry also said he has just released a book about North Carolina Street Heat called “North Carolina Street Heat El Libro.” Terry said the book chronicles the group’s story throughout the years. Terry said there are limited copies of the book available now.

“It is really an interesting book, anyone who wants a real deeper insight to North Carolina Street Heat,” he said.

Terry graduated from North Carolina State University has a degree in audio

production and communication. He said he has been able to apply his college education to his passion. Terry started out as a DJ but slowly evolved into a rapper and a “man of many hats.”

“A lot of that is due to finance because you don’t have money for a producer, don’t have money for a rapper, street team,” he said. “Believe it or not, (we have never had a manager) and I book all of our gigs, and through the years I got good at it. It is kind of funny the story; we did not do it the traditional way— i.e., no manager, street team— I was the street team, I talked to everybody directly, everything is hands on. I like it like that, I have learned a lot that way.”

Food fit for the Queen of Sheba: North Carolina’s first Yemeni restaurant Restaurateurs don’t always like being written about in their first week, but Max Alshayf expressed no hesitancy on the Monday of his soft opening at Greensboro’s FantaCity shopping center.

Ian McDowell Delighted I was writing about Sana’a, Contributing North Carolina’s first Yemeni restaurant, columnist he served food so tasty I didn’t miss the Arabic coffee he promised to have soon.

“Please tell everyone,” he said as I dug into my haneeth, delicately spiced fresh young lamb slow-roasted to such fallingoff-the-bone tenderness you could eat it with a spoon. Or as I did, with a piece of bread used to pluck juicy pink mutton off a steaming rib.

Told I love sheep and goat, he promised a second lamb dish and more bread, apologizing for having bought the latter at Super G. “Soon, we’ll be baking our own.” he said before laughingly telling the kitchen “make sure the agdah is really good, so this man doesn’t burn us!”

He didn’t just want a good write-up. My friend Christine had rhapsodized about her Sunday lunch at Sana’a. Alshayf said he wasn’t open then, but had invited Christine and her boyfriend Jeff to sit and eat when they peered in.

Christine said they loved their food, which included lamb mandi and beef haneeth. Haneeth and mandi are two traditional Yemeni dishes finding favor in North America. Both typically consist of meat, spices and rice, with the difference being that haneeth is pressure-cooked, whether in a taboon clay oven with an airtight seal or something more modern, whereas mandi is boiled with spices and then roasted. Glancing at Sana’a’s temporary menu, I saw whole and half mandi chicken, but other than some excellent hommus and baba ganouj, I filled up on lamb. The second dish was the aforementioned agdah. Googling indicates this Arabic word, also Romanized as ogdah, means “knot” and refers to a thick spicy stew in which such vegetables as tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and zucchini “tie together” shredded lamb, chicken or fish.

This, even more than haneeth, is meant

to be eaten with bread as a utensil, which is why they brought a second platter of sal f(unleavened wheat flatbread).

The agdah, while very different from my lamb haneeth, was great even with storebought bread. I can’t wait to have it once they start baking their own.

Another friend recommended I ask Alshayf for a sample platter of all their various kabobs. That will have to wait.

Although I suspect Alshayf’s are great, kabobs aren’t as uniquely Yemeni as haneeth and agdah. I’m also interested in their breakfast, an important meal in Yemen that includes eggs, dates and sautéed lamb liver.

I also want to try the fish, and I really must sample saltah, often called the national dish of Yemen. Wikipedia indicates this is a brown meat stew with fenugreek and sahawiq (a spicy chutney or salsa), accompanied by rice, potatoes, or scrambled eggs. Alshayf indicated that he has a wide variety of vegetarian dishes, but before I could inquire, his graphic designers showed up for a consultation about the final menu, and then my lamb arrived, steaming and savory, and my mouth wasn’t interested in talking.

Alshayf took my phone number and said he’d call me once he was prepared to start serving whole lamb with rice, something which I and my lamb-loving friends are eager to try, possibly for my upcoming birthday.

This article’s title refers to the tradition that Bilqis, the Quranic and Biblical Queen of Sheba, ruled an area including modern Yemen before marrying King Sulaym n (the Old Testament’s Solomon). Many scholars believe that Sheba was the South Arabian kingdom of Saba, centered around the Yemeni oasis of Marib (in the Western classical world, this country was called Arabia Felix or “fertile Arabia,” differentiating it from Arabia Deserta).

The restaurant Sana’a takes its name from one of the oldest cities in the world, Yemen’s historical capital. In the aftermath of the 2014 conflict, the seat of the country’s internationally recognized government moved to the port city of Aden. Alshayf told me that many Yemenis his age support this change. “The Old City is big and beautiful, but very tribal, and we are not so much that anymore.”

o misquote the immortal Bard: “Once more unto the festival, dear friends.”

Last week, dozens braved the sort of cold, rainy weather that seems to have Mark Burger dominated 2018 thus far to gather at the Contributing Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art columnist in Winston-Salem to kick off the RiverRun International Film Festival at its official preview party.

Ready, set, RiverRun! This marks the festival’s 20th anniversary and the 15th since it made the eastward expansion from Brevard to Winston-Salem, where it has “grown and prospered,” said Allen Joines, who has been the mayor of Winston-Salem longer than the festival has called the city home. “It adds cultural fabric to the city and is such an important event in the calendar of Winston-Salem.”

The festival, which runs April 19-29, received more than 2,000 submissions the year – setting a new record – from which were selected 165 films (features and shorts), representing 40 countries. Emmyand Golden Globe-winning and thrice Oscar-nominated actress Piper Laurie (The Hustler, Carrie, Children of a Lesser God) and Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker

Chuck Workman (Precious Images) will be receiving Master of Cinema awards.

Despite a bandaged left hand, the unfortunate result of what he quips was “a collision with the sidewalk,” executive director Rob Davis was in high spirits for the party, opening his remarks with the statement that “this is a landmark anniversary,” and both he and Joines lauded former UNCSA School of Filmmaking Dean and current faculty member Dale Pollock as the “visionary” who laid the foundation by which RiverRun came to Winston-Salem.

As he was teaching that night, Pollock was unable to attend the preview party, but his wife Susie was on hand, as were Jim Sparrow, president and CEO of the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth

County, and Don Martin, vice-president of the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. This is the first year the festival is receiving support from Forsyth County, which “was actually a pretty easy decision,” he said. “This is the greatest film festival in the Southeast. The films offer something for everyone.” He also took a moment to praise the festival’s ongoing “Films With Class” series, which has brought cinematic entertainment and education to 250,000 students thus far.

UNCSA hosts free screening of faculty member’s new documentary The Unrestricted Life of Ted Fujioka, a 43-minute documentary by UNCSA School of Filmmaking faculty member Julian Semilian, will be screened March 30 at the ACE Exhibition Complex in Winston-Salem with Semilian and the film’s composer, Laura Ingram Semilian (the filmmaker’s wife), in attendance.

The film examines the life of Ted Fujioka, a second-generation JapaneseAmerican whose family was interred at a Japanese internment camp in the Arkansas Delta during World War II. Fujioka, an artist, inventor, philosopher, and practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism, became a friend and mentor to Semilian in Los Angeles over 30 years ago, and has had such a positive impact on him – and others – that Semilian wanted to pay tribute to his humanity, insight, and wisdom, believing that Fujioka’s attitude and outlook are applicable to anyone, of

any faith, in these turbulent times.

Semilian was determined for the film to avoid being preachy because, quite simply, “that’s not who Ted is.

“He’s an amazing listener, and he and I held long talks over the years,” Semilian related. “It’s because of those long conversations that I eventually wanted to make the film. His insights into life and people are always accurate and enlightening. I also watched him speak and give advice to many people and felt in awe of his ability to accurately assess their state of life. The things he said made these people see their problems from a new perspective, and they always left feeling encouraged and uplifted. I am constantly amazed at how accurate his insights are.”

After World War II, Fujioka visited his ancestral home of Hiroshima, yet as he says, he didn’t quite feel at home there.

Likewise, Semilian was born in Romania

during the Communist regime. Growing up in a Jewish family in such an oppressive environment doesn’t necessarily give him wistful pangs of nostalgia, yet he accepts it as a part of his identity and his ongoing spiritual journey. He can look back at that time from a humble, even humorous perspective. Coming to America, he smiles, “I could get blue jeans, I could buy Beatles records, I could take a hot shower!”

Semilian utilized archival newsreel footage and Fujioka’s family photos to flesh out the story, accentuated by Ingram Semilian’s effectively subtle score and animation created by Echo Wilson, one of his first-year students, whose work is particularly impressive. “It’s always difficult to describe what you want in abstract terms,” he said, “but she did. I would try to describe what I was looking for, and she would be finishing my sentence!”

Although “I am always very critical of

my own work, I am pleased that a lot of people I admire like the film,” Semilian said. “I am very happy Ted loved the film, and I consider that one of my life’s accomplishments. He felt happy about the film and that it was very accurate. I do feel that the film captures his personality and philosophy.” !

Americana band from Tennessee to play The Ramkat

T

he Black Lillies are from Knoxville, Tennessee, and they’re proud of it.

The roots-Americana band will be zipping over the Blue Ridge Mountains to John Adamian a play a few shows, @johnradamian including one at The Ramkat in WinstonSalem on March 31, Contributor before heading west.

Tennessee got doubly blessed with two cities — Memphis and Nashville — that are iconic for their place in music history. Both cities remain meccas for musicians in certain styles, and both of which attract music tourists from around the world. Knoxville might not be known internationally as a music capital, but musicians know that east Tennessee is situated in that rich spot where parts of western Virginia, North Carolina, north Georgia and Kentucky all sort of thread together with deep Appalachian traditions flowing in all directions. Knoxville has a music scene all its own, and the Black Lillies are independent-minded ambassadors of their city.

Cruz Contreras, the founder of the group and its frontman, said their home base has something to do with that.

“There is a great musical story specific

to Knoxville,” said Contreras, ticking off some names of country-music greats like Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, or Chet Atkins, all of whom are from that part of the state.

Contreras grew up closer to Nashville, but he came to Knoxville for college, where he studied jazz piano at the University of Tennessee.

Contreras was that somewhat unlikely musician who found his way to jazz through bluegrass and country, which he grew up playing.

“Somebody told me that if you really want to be a great musician and you want to be a studio musician, you need to go study jazz,” Contreras said. “That was good advice, and I took it. The whole time I was still playing mandolin, banjo and guitar and listening to bluegrass. At that time, I wanted to learn as much as I could about jazz and pull that back into the stringband world.”

Contreras played in other outfits before the Black Lillies formed in 2009.

The mix of jazz, bluegrass, country, roots rock, blues and more has been part of his music all along. One can often hear hints of New Orleans piano music, honky-tonk

and folk rock all jockeying for position in a Black Lillies song.

The band has had some lineup changes in recent years, and 2017 found Contreras working with Sam Quinn and Dustin Schafer, two other seasoned vocalists and songwriters, along with longtime drummer Bowman Townsend, giving the band the power to pull off Eagles-esque threepart harmonies. If there’s been a unifying theme of the Black Lillies’ music, it’s been a certain restless omni-American attitude, a familiarity with heartache and struggle, a taste for the open road, for rambling, for the charms of the internal-combustion engine, and a preference for motion over stillness. In that spirit, the Black Lillies have made a name for themselves as a band that tours relentlessly. Last year wasn’t exactly an abrupt stop to that routine, but new members and plans for a new record meant that 2017 wasn’t quite as much of a blur of shows. Instead, Contreras and his new bandmates set to work cranking out some fresh material, setting themselves the challenge of writing and debuting a new song almost every week for a chunk of the year. It put them in a good position to head into the studio.

“We got up to around the 25 song range,” Contreras said. “When it was time to make the record we had a lot of material to choose from.”

The band spent much of January and February recording songs for that new record at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville. They’re mixing a dozen or so songs now, preparing for an early-fall release.

It’s a funny stop-and-start process, writing songs in a hurry, sharing them with fans on social media, giving them a trial

run at live shows, fine-tuning them in the studio and now, keeping their powder dry, so to speak, waiting to release new material later in the year.

“Last year, by December, we were making a real push to play as much new music as possible, to try out new material for the record,” Contreras said. “Now I want to make sure we don’t wear out the new music.”

So, if you happened to catch the Black Lillies live in 2017, you might have heard some early iterations of new songs that have since changed, and which might not get played live again until it’s time to promote the as-yet-unnamed new record later in the year.

The latest incarnation of the Black Lillies, as can be heard on a new song like “Earthquake,” which Contreras and crew played live on Adam Carolla’s podcast last year, is a band that’s able to blend their voices with a sweetness and ease that becomes a defining part of their new sound. Contreras, coincidentally, had just seen an Eagles concert a few days before we spoke recently, and he was struck by how distinctive a strong mix of vocals can be, a combination that’s more than the sum of its parts. And the Black Lillies can do that in a mellow acoustic setting, or — more and more — with a driving pulse and the muscle of a rock band. As with Contreras’s ability to move from piano, to banjo, to mandolin, to guitar, from acoustic to electric contexts, the band, too, can operate in a variety of dynamic ranges.

Now Contreras sees the task ahead for the Black Lillies as one of letting their essence shine through.

“We’re evolving quick,” he said. “I think at this point in our career we want to make sure people know where we’re going and where we want to be. The band’s more of a rock band now, and I think if you don’t let people know that, you’re doing everybody a disservice. We want to be able to rock out full-on.” !

Jaeger Bomb: Second verse, same as the first

B

efore it opened in July 2013, the hype surrounding director Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim was at an eardrum-shattering pitch — so deafening, in fact, that one would have been forgiven for assuming the picture would end up grossing more than Titanic, Avatar and The Avengers combined. Of course, online hype doesn’t always translate into real-world dollars, and this $200 million production barely cracked the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office (among summer ’13 efforts, even the now-forgotten animated yarn Epic earned more). Thankfully for Warner Bros., the international audience added another $300 million to the till which is why we’re now receiving Pacific Rim Uprising ( ).

While del Toro returns as a co-producer, he vacated the director’s chair for this one, allowing veteran TV writer-directorproducer Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil, Spartacus) to have his first crack at the big screen. Pacific Rim Uprising really isn’t

any worse than its humdrum predecessor and in some ways manages to even top it.

Hence, if you enjoyed the first film, you’ll likely enjoy this one, and if you didn’t ... well, you know the routine.

In my review for the 2013 original, I dismissed it as “basically a CGI circle jerk,”

which admittedly might have been a tad harsh — after all, no franchise deserves that slam as much as the Transformers line. Still, despite del Toro’s efforts to make a film in the grand tradition of Ray Harryhausen and Ishiro Honda, the overwhelming clutter and drab characters skewed a little too close to the Michael Bay movies.

Pacific Rim Uprising offers more of the same, with one notable exception. Instead of deadwood Charlie Hunnam as the lead, we now get John Boyega, and that’s one notch in the belt of this follow-up.

The particulars of Boyega’s role are dreary, even if his performance isn’t. Jake Pentecost is the son of Stacker Pentecost, the barking officer played by Idris Elba in the first film. (Did Stacker even mention having a son in the previous picture, or is this the lazy screenwriting device of adding a character after the fact since true inspiration was taking the day off? But I digress.) Naturally, Jake could have been the best pilot ever — or so he’s told by his former teammate, Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood). Instead, he opted to leave the military-industrial world of the Jaegers, the giant robots that were created to defeat the fearsome alien monsters known as Kaiju.

With the Kaiju threat long over, Jake has opted to engage in petty larcenies involving stolen Jaeger parts — the latest of his heists puts him in contact with Amara (Cailee Spaeny), an orphan who has built her own mini-Jaeger named Scrapper (this franchise’s marketing answer to Porgs, Ewoks and Bumblebee). Both caught in the act of pilfering, Jake and Amara end up back at Jaeger HQ at just the right time, since some of the giant robots are turning rogue and there are also hints that the

Kaiju might be returning to our world to wreak further havoc.

Rinko Kikuchi, one of the bright spots in the first flick, returns as Mako Mori, but her role is rather thankless this time around. Worse, her presence reminds us that, just as the heroes in Pacific Rim were a disillusioned pilot returning to the fold (Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket) and an orphaned girl who blossoms into a champion fighter (Kikuchi’s Mako Mori), this new picture also finds in Jake and Amara a disillusioned pilot returning to the fold and an orphaned girl who blossoms into a champion fighter. What was that about inspiration taking the day off? How about the entire week?

Charlie Day and Burn Gorman, who provided insufferable comic relief back in ’13 as a pair of bickering Kaiju experts, return for this outing, so prepare for more suffering. On the bright side, newcomer Spaeny (in her first movie, with four more due this year alone) shows promise, and she provides her pint-sized character with the proper measure of spunk.

As for the marquee attractions, the Jaegers, and the Kaiju (yes, the latter eventually turn up; this is only a spoiler if you’ve never seen a movie before in your entire life), they engage in some battles that are sure to titillate the faithful. Like del Toro (and unlike Bay), DeKnight at least can stage action scenes that are accessible rather than incoherent, although a little of them goes a long way. There’s about as much entertainment value in watching two Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots pummel each other on the kitchen table as in watching these monoliths monotonously mutilate each other on the screen — and the battles are a lot shorter, to boot. !

Guilford College Theatre Studies presents Everybody

he Guilford College Department of Theatre Studies will present “Everybody” by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. The Huffington Post calls it, “Theatre rather unlike anything you might have seen…unusual, unconventional and eye-opening”.

Performances are April 6-8 and April 12-13 at 7:30 p.m. in Sternberger Auditorium, located in Founders Hall.

There will also be at matinee performance on April 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.guilford.edu/theatre. The April 12 performance will include American Sign Language interpretation.

[NEWS OF THE WEIRD] PETS ON A PLANE

In the same week that a dog perished after a United Airlines flight attendant insisted it be stored in an overhead compartment on a flight from Houston to New Chuck Shepherd York City, another family’s pet was lost by the beleaguered carrier. Irgo, a 10-yearold German shepherd belonging to the Swindle family, was mistakenly sent to Japan instead of Kansas City, Missouri.

When Kara Swindle and her children went to pick up their dog on March 13 after flying from Oregon, they were given a Great Dane — whose destination was supposed to be Japan. The dogs got mixed up in Denver, where they both had connecting flights. Swindle was concerned that her dog wouldn’t survive the long flight back: “He is a 10-year-old dog, and he’s never been on a flight before,” she told KCTV 5 News. However, United had Irgo checked out by a veterinarian in Tokyo and loaded onto a private charter to Wichita, Kansas, where he was reunited with his family on March 15.

I AM NOT DEAD YET! Constantin Reliu, 63, appealed unsuccessfully to a court in Barlad, Romania, in March to overturn a death certificate that his wife had obtained after not hearing from him for more than a decade. According to The Guardian, Reliu left Romania for Turkey in 1992 to look for employment,

but neglected to keep in touch with his family. In 2003, Reliu’s wife, believing he had died in an earthquake in Turkey, argued in court for a death certificate, which didn’t come to light until Reliu was deported back to Romania because of expired papers in Turkey. Upon his arrival, immigration officers explained to Reliu that he had died in 2003. His appeal failed, as the court maintained he was too late, and the ruling is final, leaving Reliu in an odd state of limbo. “I am officially dead, although I’m alive,” Reliu told Romanian media outlets. “I have no income and because I am listed dead, I can’t do anything.”

DIVINE INTERVENTION — In a recent interview on “60 Minutes Overtime,” Oprah Winfrey said that if God wanted her to run for president, “wouldn’t God kind of tell me?” Oprah may have gotten her answer in the form of a letter from Jesus Christ, an 83-year-old North Waterboro, Maine, woman who started a letter-writing campaign 50 years ago to spread a message of faith and peace — around the same time that she changed her name. WGME-TV reported that Christ sent her letter to Winfrey on March 9, without knowledge of the media speculation, or Winfrey’s wish for a heavenly sign, regarding her running for president. Christ said she sent the letter because she likes Winfrey, but “If she does (run), I’ll vote for her — that’s for sure.”

— Destiny Church in Columbia, Maryland, tried a novel approach to attract new members to its congregation. On March 4, the church gave away five used

cars to “demonstrate God’s unbelievable, no-strings-attached goodness,” according to The Washington Post. The idea was hatched to increase attendance at the church’s new location after several years meeting in a high school auditorium. “Who doesn’t need a new car?” asked Sandy Dobson, who came with her son. “Different people have different things that bring them to Christ, to church. It doesn’t always have to be traditional methods.”

Pastor Stephen Chandler added that Jesus himself taught that giveaways are guaranteed to draw a crowd: The biggest gatherings Christ preached to came on the two times he distributed free loaves and fishes.

ANIMALS WITH ISSUES Louis, an 18-year-old male gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo, appears to be something of a germophobe, according to the Associated Press. When he is carrying food, 6-foot-tall Louis walks on his hind legs, like a human, rather than leaning forward on his front knuckles, as gorillas usually do. Zoo curator Michael Stern says workers installed a fire hose over a mud puddle in Louis’ yard, which he crosses like a tightrope to avoid getting his feet dirty.

Stern says in the wild, gorillas may stand up on their hind feet to reach food or wade in a swamp, but only for a few seconds.

RESTORING FAITH IN HUMANITY The Rev. Alex Santora of Our Lady of Grace Church in Hoboken, New Jersey, called local police on March 14 when a suspicious package was delivered to the

house of worship. But after officers from the Hoboken Police Department declared it to be safe, church staff found a surprising delivery inside: a baby Jesus statue that had been stolen from the church’s Nativity scene about 90 years ago. WPIXTV reported that an unsigned note inside the package explained: The statue was stolen when the note-writer’s mother was a young girl, and it became a sort of heirloom in her family. When she died, it was passed on to the note-writer, who thought it should be returned.

SPOOKY A member of the Listowel Paranormal Society in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was surprised when police arrived at his door on March 13, inquiring about a small black box with a red wire protruding from it that had been left at Mackenzie Hall in Windsor. The Windsor Police Explosives Disposal Unit was called to the hall to investigate the box, but determined it was “safe” and not explosive. Society members had used the box on March 9 at the historic building to sweep for spirits. Jen Parker, assistant director for the society, called the box an EMF (electromagnetic field) sensor and said each team member carries one when they’re looking for ghosts. The society’s spokesperson also told the CBC that there were strong signs of paranormal activity at the hall, especially in the old jail, dressing room and basement. ! © 2018 Chuck Shepherd. Cam’s Coffee Creations, Bespoke Confections help students with special needs

C

amden Myers likes soccer, basketball and anime (specifically Naruto).

He loves superheroes, and despite the Superman likeness of his logo, he said Katie Murawski he prefers Batman.

Myers is the 9-yearold co-owner and Editor creator of Cam’s Coffee Creations, a different kind of coffee shop operating out of the Green Tree Church and Community Center, located at 930 S. Broad St. Cam’s Coffee Creations sells coffee and baked goods with partner, Bespoke Confections; but not only that, the shop also trains and employs students with special needs.

Myers said his favorite coffee that Cam’s Coffee Creations has to offer is the “Cam’s Cookie Craze” in which he says, “tastes like a chocolate chip cookie.”

Myers is a child with special needs; his mother and co-owner and operator of Cam’s Coffee Creations, Latasha Lewis, said Myers sustained a traumatic brain injury while she was in labor with him.

“During labor, Cam suffered a traumatic brain injury due to [the use of] forceps and a vacuum to try and get him unstuck from the birth canal,” Lewis said. “He was a 10-pound baby. The thought, in hindsight, is that he suffered the injury through that process.”

Lewis said her son also sustained nerve damage in his right arm as well, which she knew about. However, she said no one did a neural exam on Myers after he was born.

Lewis said Myers only received an actual diagnosis for his condition about two years ago.

“He has always had the deficit,” Lewis said. “But no one could tell us why and eventually a doctor did a neural work up, and that is how we discovered the injury.”

However, since Myers did not have a diagnosis until he was almost 8 years old, Lewis said he did not get the appropriate resources for his deficit. Which then led to the creation of the coffee shop.

“We started this as a hobby,” she said.

Lewis said they did not have any intentions of getting into the coffee business.

Lewis is completing her Ph.D. in curriculum instruction and assessment at Walden University. She felt that Myers would do better in a non-traditional, informal learning environment.

“So it was just a way to give him opportunities to work on his deficits,” she said.

“Like communication, math skills, reading skills in a non-traditional or informal learning environment. We had no goals or aspirations of working with other families or having a full-fledged coffee shop or learning program; we were just trying to get Cam in better shape.”

Once Lewis saw a noticeable improvement in Myers, she wanted to give back to the community.

“We basically wanted to be able to help families feel and achieve the same success that we had, and we honestly started this as a way to give back to the community,” she said. “Cam running his own business

had a profound impact on his ability level and confidence. So we achieved lots of things working in the coffee shop that we could not achieve with all the therapy and programs that we have been in. So it was actually Cam’s idea to grow the business and let in other individuals with special needs.”

Lewis said their business does not make much profit because Myers likes to give it away.

“I like helping people, and I like making nice coffee,” Myers said. “I like donating to people who don’t have food or a car or anywhere to live.”

“He gives away a lot of the money he makes to different charitable organizations in our city,” Lewis said. “He mainly likes to address homelessness.”

After only being open for a month, Lewis and Myers are impressed with its progress.

On the grand opening on March 14, Myers and Lewis said the shop sold 100 cups of coffee.

However, Lewis said the mission of Cam’s Coffee Creations is what drives the company, not coffee sales. Lewis said the

coffee is used as a means to accomplish the goal, which is to help students with special needs of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County Schools, become aware of their ability levels, teach them how to advocate for themselves and how to find support for themselves.

“Our philosophy is that individuals with disabilities can achieve any and everything, if as a community, we rally around them and if we remove their limits,” Lewis said.

“Assuming that people with disabilities are limited is because those of us who are responsible for their care and service, we give them limitations. We tell them what they can accomplish. We decide job choices for them. We decide programs for them and often times we don’t hear their needs.

We don’t hear their dreams, and we don’t try to create better situations for them. So the goal of Cam’s Coffee Creations is not to create baristas, it is to create empowered individuals who know how to advocate for themselves to go out and then live the life that they want to live.”

Lewis said an example of the shop’s philosophy is seen through one student who works with them. Lewis said he wants to be an artist and to support that dream, Lewis said Cam’s would hang his art on the walls to inspire and help him continue to follow that dream.

“Coffee is the tool to give them selfconfidence and give them real-world skills, but the goal is to not have them work with us forever,” Lewis said. “The goal is for this to be a stop on their journey and then find the path on their way to happiness and fulfillment.”

Lewis said Cam’s Coffee Creations works in conjunction with Bespoke Confections (which trains special needs students to bake and provide sweets for the coffee shop) to help special needs students from Winston-Salem and Forsyth County School System graduate with a certificate of completion.

“Part of that process is that they have to have so many job training hours in order to receive their certificate and there are places throughout the city that will employ them or give them internships or opportunities,” Lewis said. “But some students are harder to place than others. So we typically work with students who have a harder time finding placement in a typical organization.”

Lewis said the shop focuses on students whose abilities are more profound or severe. She said there are a variety of students with physical, mental and emotional disabilities that she and Bespoke Confections’ owner Jiliana Dulaney work with.

“Currently we have three students from the school system,” Lewis said. “We also have three individuals with special needs that we were working with part-time prior to opening the shop.”

Dulaney said she employed someone with special needs at her former chocolate shop, Haute Chocolate in 2011.

“When we hired him, the state of North Carolina gave him the job choice of janitor,” Dulaney said. “And he was a terrible janitor. So I was like ‘we are going to keep you, what do you want to learn?’ ‘What can we do to make this beneficial for both of us?’ Each time he would come in, I asked what he wanted to learn.”

Dulaney said watching him grow from the time he started to when the chocolate shop closed its doors, “it was like a huge transformation. Night and day, the person was not the same.”

“When he started he was a janitor, and when we left he was ringing people out, taking cash, credit cards, making chocolate with me, making coffee drinks, everything we needed,” Dulaney said. “Seeing how people treat the clients that I had just because they had Autism, I had a really bad experience with one employer, and that was the catalyst for this. I got so frustrated because it was blatant discrimination.”

Claire Athens is a current member of Bespoke Confections who works with Dulaney.

working on is social skills because Claire has had a lot of difficulty with socializing with people,” Dulaney said.

“I like it here, it is small but fine,” Athens said about the coffee shop.

Dulaney said that Bespoke Confections is focusing on mini desserts because she wants people to have more variety. She said people could get a cup of coffee from just about anywhere, but what makes Cam’s and Bespoke different is the experience.

“What makes us different is the mission,” she said. “You get to see the skill building in real time; you get to see Claire meeting new people.”

Bespoke and Cam’s plan to collaborate more than just providing baked goods to go with coffee sales.

“We have separately developed our own coaching programs, and so the goal is to develop a program together,” Lewis said. “To be able to offer an employment program that allows students to leave us and go on to do greater things. So that is what we are currently doing, combining our training efforts to roll out one program

that will reach students and more adults in the area.”

Dulaney said both her and Lewis are about to implement at 52-week curriculum together.

“So that the skills that each person learns is the exact same thing,” she said.

“So they are getting the same kind of training each time.”

Lewis and Dulaney believe that every community needs a Cam’s and a Bespoke because too many helpful institutions are separated from each other.

“I think every community needs an organization that connects real-world issues with the educational process and the community,” Lewis said. “Lots of those processes are separate right now. You have organizations that handle the mental health and another organization that handles education and another organization that handles life issues. So often times it is difficult for families to connect all the pieces and find the resources that they need.”

On April 11, Cam’s and Bespoke are hosting a photography course, where local photographers will donate their time to teach the students of the coffee shop how to take photos. The shop plans to showcase the photographs and construct a sidewalk exhibit with what the students create.

“Again, we are trying to be more than just a place to get great coffee,” she said.

“It is really good coffee, but we are really trying to be an active part of the community.”

Lewis said due to such limited staff, Cam’s Coffee Creations is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. She said she is always looking

for volunteers and hopes they can get a crew together to be open more days soon.

Myers said he hopes that as the coffee shop starts to grow so that they can get in their own space instead of just renting from the Green Tree Church and Community Center. Myers also has high hopes for a mobile coffee shop, or “coffee truck” as he called it. Lewis would like a bigger space to run the coffee shop with room for classrooms to offer workshops and classes consistently. Myers said he wants to go to college one day to be a family doctor. His advice for others with special needs is, “If you fail, get back up again, never give up and always try.”

Softgolf makes a comeback in the Triad for a limited time

BY JOCELYN JONES A new sport is making its way to the Triad. For a short time, Clemmons will be the home of Softgolf, a game that is based on the traditional style of golf but with a twist.

The differences between conventional golf and Softgolf is that everything is bigger in the game, and the rules are a bit more relaxed. The game is played with 4 3/8-inch foam balls ( around the size of a softball), three proportional large faced clubs and 12-inch diameter holes.

While the game itself may not be complicated, the history of the game certainly is, and it goes back over 40 years.

The owner of the new Softgolf course, Raymond Baldorossi Jr., and his father came up with the idea in 1974, and in 1978 got patents for their new sport.

The course opened later that same year and was open from 1979 to1988 in Delran, New Jersey, according to the website.

However, Baldorossi Jr. wrote in an email they had to close in 1988 for two reasons.

1960s parts, skateboard wheels, washing machine, saw, pipes) we had to hand cut the sphere out of foam cylinders, hand drill 80 dimples, and add eight coats of vinyl coating to the exterior to bring the weight up. The balls only lasted about three months, so it was a constant battle to keep making new balls while maintaining the rest of the course.”

They decided to put all their energy into finding a durable ball that they would be able to mass produce. By 1997, Baldorossi Jr. finally found a new high-density foam that was the perfect material for the ball, but the father-son duo still was not able to mass produce it.

Later that same year, tragedy struck.

“My dad passed away on Dec. 30, 2007, but I promised my dad I would mass produce a durable ball and start Softgolf up again,” Baldorossi Jr. said.

Three months later, on his father’s birthday, March 17, 2008, he came up with an idea to not only help save money but to help bring another aspect to the course. He decided to keep the grounds dark and make all the equipment “light up.” He worked on the idea for over three years and opened the course in November of 2011.

“Twenty-three years had passed since we were last open, and I needed to test the market,” he wrote in an email. “This time our competition was video games and cell phones. I used existing golf courses, placing portable scorecard stands and 12-inch holes in the middle of there fairways. I also developed special tools to remove buckets, and fairway grass plugs and replaced them with light up Softgolf holes.”

Fast forward to 2018, Baldorossi Jr. wrote that he is in the process of mass

producing balls that “will probably last over 100 years...it is virtually indestructible. NASA uses the same material in space because of its insulation, high elasticity and UV resistance qualities.” and his father finally got their wish. Softgolf is in the Triad for an 11-day trial period at Tanglewood Park, located at 4061 Clemmons Rd. in Clemmons from March 29 (opening at 7 p.m.) through April 8. While they don’t have a long-term contract, if this trial period is successful, it could mean big things for Softgolf.

“A long-term contract could merit us installing our solar power system and artificial turf greens,” Baldorossi Jr. said.

“We already have them, but it cost a lot to install the green energy products.”

The ultimate goal for Baldorossi Jr., when it comes to Softgolf, is to provide an affordable activity for family and friends and to also introduce the sport of golf to individuals that normally wouldn’t be able to play the sport. He also plans to use the game of Softgolf to give back to the community by hosting several fundraisers for different causes. Baldorossi Jr. plans to purchase golf carts that enable those affected by paralysis to play Softgolf. He also plans to work closely with veterans, and he wrote that children’s charities are also a priority.

“Throughout the development of the new Softgolf concept,” he wrote. “I have had several incidents that have felt like divine intervention. Like my dad and God are guiding me throughout my journey.”

Gillian’s ‘Mary Ann’ to visit the Triad Fifty-four years ago, Mary Ann Summers and six other shipmates set out for a threehour tour that left them stranded on an uncharted desert island. Today Mary Jim Longworth Ann’s alter ego, Dawn Wells, is setting out for a different kind Longworth of tour that will take at Large her all over the world.

This time, her first port of call will be the High Point Theatre on April 28. “What Would Mary Ann Do?...the Confessions Tour”, was inspired by Dawn’s 2014 book of the same name, in which she offers up common sense advice on a wide variety of topics. The live show will focus on her life and career, including humorous stories from her time on Gilligan’s Island, which premiered in September of 1964 and ran for three seasons.

Dawn Wells was born Oct. 18, 1938, in Reno, Nevada. Her father Joe was part owner in a Las Vegas hotel, and her mother Evelyn was a homemaker, and a bit overprotective of her daughter. “My mother knew where I was every single second.

My junior year in college, I’m driving from Reno to Seattle with my boyfriend, and the highway patrol pulls us over. I rolled down the window, and the policeman said, ‘Is there a Dawn Wells in the car?’ ‘Yes,’ I said.

‘Call your mother,’ he said.”

Dawn won the Miss Nevada contest in 1959, competed in the Miss America pageant, then caught the acting bug in college.

Soon afterward, she found steady work on television, often guest-starring in Westerns such as Cheyenne, Maverick, Wagon Train, and many others. She was a natural fit for Westerns because her great, great grandfather was a stagecoach driver, and Dawn had ridden horses since she was a child.

“I remember one of the first western episodes I did, they asked me, ‘Can you drive a buckboard?’ I hadn’t driven a buckboard in my life, but I said ‘Of course I can!’ My horse got away, and they had to come get me (laughs).”

nizable actresses on the planet and is in constant demand at nostalgia conventions and on talk shows. But starting next month, her schedule gets even busier as she launches her tour in High Point.

I first met Dawn in 2013 when she attended the Western Film Festival in Winston-Salem. We re-connected last week and talked about her book and the tour.

JL: Why did you write the book in the first place?

DW: Because we don’t have a Mary Ann today, and I think it’s very difficult being a parent, or a best friend. There’s no guidelines. My generation was pretty black and white. There were no drugs, no sex before marriage. Now with all of the temptations and all of the permissiveness everywhere, it’s much harder to raise a child. But there still needs to be a guideline behind it, and I think that’s Mary Ann. JL: Mary Ann herself had a pretty good upbringing because she never engaged in intimate relations with the Professor on Gilligan’s Island.

DW: Back then there was never any romance. They couldn’t even show my navel. We’ve come a long way. If we were doing the show today, we’d all be living in the same hut (laughs).

JL: I understand your touring show is for the entire family, especially for fans of Gilligan’s Island, but what do you want the audience to take away from your presentation?

DW: When you’re in the audience, I want you to know that I’m relating to you.

I’m not talking to you, I’m one of you, and that’s what I feel Mary Ann is. And what do I want you to take away from it? Don’t lose the values you’ve been raised with.

As a special treat, the audience will be able to ask Dawn questions during the second half of her show. You can ask her about Gilligan’s Island, or you can even ask her for advice. Just don’t ask her if she can drive a buckboard.

I have a history of terrible relationships that end in awful heartbreak. The advice I keep getting is to date down — get together with a man Amy Alkon who is less attractive than I am and who likes me a little Advice more than I like him.

Goddess I was kind of into the idea of equality on all levels, but maybe I’m wrong. — Rethinking Woman After you’ve had your heart broken, it’s tempting to opt for romantic safety measures. For example, a garden gnome could be an ideal partner — because few women will fight you for your 18-inch “Man of Resin” and because his stubby little legs are molded together, making it impossible for him to run away.

There’s a name for this “dating down” thing you’re contemplating: “the principle of least interest.” This is sociologist Willard Waller’s term — from his observations of dating dynamics between college students — describing how whichever partner is the least emotionally attached is in a position to “exploit” the other.

Now, you aren’t looking to clean out a guy’s bank account or make him scrub the baseboards with Barbie’s toothbrush. Regardless, you’re likely to have more power in any relationship — and be less likely to be the exploitee — if your

response to a guy’s “I love you SO much!” involves polite gratitude or pointing skyward: “Look! A UFO!” The problem is, how do you engineer this sort of situation? Only “swiping right” on men you have the lukewarmies for? Only accepting dates from men you don’t entirely respect? Of course, even an “I’m just not that into you” strategy like this isn’t foolproof, because what anthropologists call “mate value” can shift — like when the mouth-breathing nerdy loser becomes the mouth-breathing but unexpectedly sexy startup multigazillionaire.

Tempting as it is to look for hacks to avoid heartbreak, it’s probably more helpful to look at whether there was anything you could’ve — and should’ve — done differently in your past relationships. (Were there red flags you spotted and then dropped off at Goodwill with the weird tablecloth from your aunt?)

Beyond any willful blindness on your part, the reality is, relationships sometimes end in heartbreak. As for all this time the guy is spending with you, consider that we seem to have evolved to have the romantic version of a spare tire in the trunk — a “backup mate” (to the partner we’re with). Evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Joshua Duntley explain that “mates might cheat, defect” (run off with another), “leave, or die. They might suddenly drop in mate value.” Their research finds that both men and women seem to maintain backup mates — three on average — and “try to keep their backup mates out of other relationships” (like by giving them false hope during automotive lurchings around the parking lots of closed superstores).

You might also consider that there’s more to making yourself attractive to a potential boyfriend than a few swipes of MAC and Maybelline. Social psychologist Robert Cialdini, reflecting on what he calls “the scarcity principle,” points out that we value is what seems out of reach (as opposed to what’s all over us like orange “cheese product” on a kid’s veggies): “Study after study shows that items and opportunities are seen to be more valuable as they become less available.”

In other words, until a man is girlfriendfree, it’s in your best interest to be about as accessible to him as the upholstery of my late Grandma Pauline’s couch was to the rumps of most of humanity. There were people she would remove the plastic covering for — visiting movie stars and members of the British royal family (a la “I’m bored with St. Barts. How about a slushy January in suburban Detroit?”). !
