Newest Altantic League team ready for first season The newest professional baseball to the Triad will start its inaugural season in the Atlantic League on April 26 when the High Point Rockers travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to battle the Barnstormers. High Point will open the brand new, state of the art, BB&T Point on Thursday, May 2 when they take on the defending Atlantic League Champions, the Sugar Land Skeeters. High Point’s home will be the brand-new BB&T Point, located in the heart of downtown at the corner of Elm Street and Gatewood Avenue. With a capacity of nearly 4,500, a 360-degree concourse, specialty group seating areas, 2,300-square-foot Jumbotron, and complete AstroTurf playing surface, this multi-purpose venue will become an entertainment destination in High Point and the Triad.
The team will play a 140game schedule, including 70 games at BB&T Point, with ticket prices ranging from $5$14. The ballpark also features a kid’s zone, batting cages, and a craft beer room, featuring draft beer from Brown Truck and Red Oak breweries. “Although the primary goal for the stadium is to create a vibrant downtown business core, an important byproduct will be the countless memories for the fans,” Coy O. Williard, Jr., Chairman of the Board for High Point Baseball, said in April of 2018. Announced in early 2018, the High Point Rockers join the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB), an eight-team independent league with teams in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Texas. Despite not having a true MLB affiliation, the Atlantic League is

highly-regarded within MLB. A three-year partnership was announced in February of 2019 and includes the installation of TrackMan software in all ALPB ballparks while also making the league a proving ground for MLB to test potential new rules. “This partnership underscores the great value MLB sees in the Atlantic League and our players,” said Rick White, President of the Atlantic League. “The high level of play in the Atlantic League provides the ideal testing ground for potential playing rule and equipment changes, while the addition of MLB’s own scouting tools will increase the level of exposure our players receive from MLB clubs.” For over two decades, the ALPB has been the standard bearer for independent baseball with a reputation for bringing quality competition, and family entertainment to its fans. Since its inception in 1998, more than 40 million fans have personally witnessed an Atlantic League contest. More than 1,000 players in its history have had their contracts purchased by MLB clubs, including current Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill & Los Angeles Angels catcher Rene Rivera. high point rockers Leaguers Lew Ford, and the 2018 Atlantic League Player of the Year, Jordany Valdespin. In total, more than 50 percent of current players in the league have Major League experience on their resume. It’s not just the players that have cachet with baseball fans; more than 90 managers and coaches have also seen their careers blend between affiliated and Atlantic League baseball. Tommy John, Gary Carter, Bud Harrelson and Butch Hobson have all filled out lineup cards in the ALPB, while former New York Met Wally Backman manages the Long Island Ducks. The Rockers added to that trend, hiring Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer, and 1987 World Series Most Valuable Player, Frank Viola as their first-ever pitching coach
Jamie Keefe and Frank Viola in November. Viola joins manager Jamie Keefe, a 16-year skipper in independent baseball and former third-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates, on High Point’s staff. Their experience has helped attract a group of players that includes four former big-leaguers, including 2013 World Series participant, and North
Carolina native, Seth Maness. “Seth’s signing here is an example of the talent-rich state that North Carolina is,” said Keefe. “We are looking forward to having a player of his caliber come home to pitch for the Rockers.” Other former MLB players include Hector Gomez (Milwaukee Brewers), Tyler Ladendorf (Oakland Athletics) and Vic Black (New York Mets). Meanwhile, the squad also consists of five natives of The Old North State, including Winston-Salem’s own Seth Simmons. Triad baseball fans may also recognize Rockers catcher Brett Austin, who played for the WinstonSalem Dash in 2016, and infielder Giovanny Alfonzo, a former member of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. NC natives highlight Rockers roster additions The High Point Rockers continued to add to their inaugural roster, announcing the signing of four new players today, including two from North Carolina. Pitcher Casey Delgado, along with position players Giovanny Alfonzo, Brett Austin, and Quincy Latimore join High Point’s squad for the 2019 season. “We teased the addition of more North Carolina players last week,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “It is exciting for the community of High Point, the Triad, and beyond to have these homegrown talents be able to put on the Rockers uniform here in High Point.” Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Latimore was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2007 out
of Middle Creek High School in Apex, North Carolina. In his twelve professional seasons, the outfielder has reached as high as Triple-A, spending last season with Bravos de Leon in the Mexican League where he batted .316 with sixteen home runs and 87 runs batted in. Over the course of his career, the 30-year-old has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, and Detroit Tigers organizations. “Quincy brings 12 years and over 6,000 at-bats in the minors to us in High Point,” Keefe touted. “His power numbers, and the ability to drive in runs, will be a nice addition to the middle of our lineup.” Also from North Carolina, catcher Brett Austin be-

.309 with 45 RBI and 10 stolen bases, both career highs. “Gio has played all over the diamond in his career,” Keefe mentioned. “He will help us to solidify the middle of our defense here in High Point.” Rounding out the latest group of signings is righthanded pitcher Casey Delgado. The 28-year-old played collegiate baseball at Austin Peay State University and began his professional career in the Independent Frontier League before signing with the New York Mets in 2015. Delgado reached Double-A Binghamton in 2016 & 2017, going 11-6 in 2017. He spent last year with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, throwing three complete games. “Casey made 22 stats in this league last year,” explained Keefe. “He will eat up innings for us and has a ton of knowledge regarding the hitters in this league.” The recent group of signings joins a pedigree of talent for High Point, which opens their inaugural season on Thursday, May 2 at BB&T Point. Fans can now reserve seats in several ways, including Season Tickets, 35-Game Plans and Group Outings; with single-game tickets going on sale Tuesday, March 26. A native of the Charlotte area, Austin played collegiately at North Carolina State University where he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 draft by the Chicago White Sox. No stranger to playing in his home state, Austin spend 2018 in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights, mainly as a reserve catcher. His five-year professional career has been entirely with the White Sox organization, including stints in Kannapolis, as well as Winston-Salem in 2015 and 2016. “Brett has an abundance of experience catching as high as Triple A,” noted Keefe. “We will look to him to guide our pitching staff.” A utility infielder, Giovanny Alfonzo enters his fifth season as a professional. Originally born in Venezuela, the 26-year-old played high school baseball in Florida before attending the University of Tampa. He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in 2015 and spent two years in their system, spending 2016 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Alfonzo has also seen stints with the Long Island Ducks and the New York Mets organization. The infielder’s best season came in the Atlantic League, batting a career high

HiToms look forward to a successful season By Jaelin McDonald The High Point-Thomasville HiToms have been a constant presence in the High Point/Thomasville community since 1937. As they head into their 20th season in the Coastal Plain Leauge, the team is looking to continue their success by having some players return and adding more players leading up to the start of the season. Gaining awareness throughout the years by having local talent has propelled the HiToms in the Triad and surrounding areas. Winning 30 games last year was the build up to what was looking like a Coastal Plain League title. Losing in a best 2-of-3 series in the championship round to the Morehead City Marlins, the HiToms remains confident to get back in the CPL championship. Director of marketing John Thomas described this upcoming season as, growing. He said with having a handful of freshmen and sophomore players from universities all across the Atlantic, it will give the HiToms a chance to help develop young talent. Although there has been one dominant baseball team in the High Point- Thomasville area for about two decades, that reign comes to an end as the newly High Point Rockers comes in the picture. The 22 • Triad Baseball Guide 2019
High Point Rockers are an independent team who just recently joined the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Thomas said that the HiToms are aware of the new team in the area, but they are not changing “who we are or what we do based on that.” “We have no problem with the Rockers coming to the area, we appreciate the growth,” Thomas said. “We just look forward to continuing our path to a title and making our fans happy. Wish them nothing but success.” The HiToms open up the season with back-to-back games on the schedule starting May 25-26. Hosting the Kernersville Bulldogs and the Catawba Valley Stars at home

gives the team a early surge as they pace themselves to start off on a good note having home games out the gate. “Sending players to the next level is what we’re all about,” Thomas said. “We’ve had several players over the last few years transition to bigger organizations.” This year, coming away with the Coastal Plain League Championship in their grips is the goal for the team after losing back in August.
The HiToms look forward to getting some redemption against the Morehead City Marlins during the regular season, but there may be a chance of seeing them again when the championship series begins during the summer. Repeating as conference champions aren’t as far-fetched as it seems when other ball clubs have lost numerous players. Thomas said with the potential on the current roster, things are looking up for the HiToms plus the addition of players to come within the next few weeks sparks excitement inside the organization. For more information, visit their website (www.hitoms.com), tune in to HiTomTV or take a trip to Finch Field and enjoy the game.

Former Dash right-hander Brandon Brennan made his Major League debut on Thursday with the Seattle Mariners, marking the first Dash alumnus to make their big league debut in 2019. Brennan, who is the 53rd Dash alumnus and 361st Winston-Salem alumnus to reach the Majors, pitched for parts of three seasons in Winston-Salem from 2014-2016. Brennan’s debut coincided with 10time All-Star Ichiro Suzuki’s last ever MLB game, which took place in front of a jam-packed Tokyo Dome in Japan. As part of a 5-4 win in 12 innings over the Oakland Athletics, Brennan tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Mariners, allowing one hit and one walk. After originally being signed in the offseason to a Minor League contract by the Colorado Rockies, the 27-year-old was selected by Seattle in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft. A former fourth-round pick by the Chicago White Sox out of Orange Coast Community College in 2012, Brennan pitched for rookie-level Great Falls and Low-A Kannapolis before making his first appearance in Winston-Salem in 2014. In his first year in the Dash purple, Brennan posted a 2.93 ERA in six starts.
The following season, Brennan played a key role in helping the Dash clinch a second-half playoff spot. The California native registered a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts, as Winston-Salem finished a league-best 45-23 after the All-Star Break and earned a second-half Southern Division title. After starting the 2016 campaign with Double-A Birmingham, Brennan returned to Winston-Salem for a final time later that year. The right-hander went 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA and was promoted back to the Barons after tossing back-toback, nine-inning complete games. Brennan spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons splitting time between Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. Last year, the former White Sox farmhand went 4-3 with a 3.10 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 69.2 innings with Birmingham before a late-August promotion to the Knights. Brennan finished the season going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and nine strikeouts in five innings for Charlotte. Dash unveil traffic plan for 2019 The Dash’s 10th anniversary season at BB&T Ballpark will begin Thursday, April 11. As the organization prepares to celebrate this monumental milestone, the team has revealed new traffic plans to provide fans easy access to BB&T Ballpark. There is a 1.2-mile stretch of Business 40 near the ballpark that will be closed during the 2019 season. By taking advantage of the recommended traffic patterns below, fans can best avoid any delays in their normal ballpark commute. The new BB&T Ballpark traffic map can be found at www.milb.com/documents/8/5/0/305564850/Dash_ Parking_with_Business_40_closure.pdf. The map includes step-by-step instructions for fans that are also outlined below: From the North: Merge onto US-52 S. Take Martin Luther King Dr. and take a left onto Marshall St. until you get to Fifth St. and take a right. Follow Fifth St. to Broad St. and take a left. Take the Broad St. entrance on the right into the ballpark.
The recommended address to enter into GPS is 951 Ballpark Way, Winston-Salem, NC 27101

Take a right on Broad St. and crossover First St. Take Broad St. entrance on the right into the ballpark. “We have been very pleased with the communication from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the contractors involved with the project,” said Dash Team President C.J. Johnson. “We have already hosted over 70 events since the road closed, and our guests have experienced little to no delays in their commute to the ballpark. We are confident that the traffic plans we have developed will allow Dash fans to continue to have unimpeded access to our ballpark parking lots.” Construction for the $99.2 million project started in November of 2018. The renovations include replacing the existing roadway pavement, modernizing entrance and exit ramps, replacing nine vehicular bridges and two pedestrian bridges, lengthening the acceleration and deceleration lanes between ramps, widening existing roadway shoulders and adding new shoulders and building portions of a multi-use path from Lockland Avenue and Liberty Street. It is expected to be completed in early 2020. “The construction on the Broad Street bridge was not expected to even start until next fall. However, the acceleration package allowed the contractor Flatiron to bring on more subcontractors. Those additional resources made it possible for us to open the Broad Street bridge this spring in time for the first pitch of the 10th anniversary season at BB&T Ballpark,” said Greta Lint, NCDOT Business 40 Communications Officer. Meanwhile, the Downtown Dash Shuttle will once again be available for all Thursday, Friday and Saturday Dash games. The shuttle runs from 30 minutes before the game to 30 minutes after the game. The Center City West Garage, located on Fourth Street, offers free parking on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Dash shuttle picks up at the garage, providing fans access to safe, free parking and a free shuttle to the game. Triad Baseball Guide 2019 • 27
