Hands-on learning takes girls to farmers’ market A desire for a lemonade stand has turned into a much larger opportunity to become entrepreneurs for Juliana and Magnolia Maner. With the help of their mother, Jessica, the girls, ages 9 and 7 respectively, participated in the Aug. 29 Farmer’s Market on Main at 206 Main St., Jamestown. “It was not safe for the girls to sell lemonade on our street because of the high amount of traffic,” Jessica said. “When I met Ryan Richardson and learned about the farm-
ers’ market I thought that would be a great thing for them to do.” The girls were so successful at the farmers’ market that they and nine other young people/families from The Covenant School, a partner educational program with their own homeschool, plan to participate in the market on Sept. 12. “I really enjoyed selling at the farmer’s market,” Juliana said. “Everyone was very kind.” “I liked selling things, but I also liked buying,” admitted her sister, Magnolia. It appears the Oakdale Road Sidewalk Project may actually happen. After years of discussion, in its consent agenda on Sept. 15, the Jamestown Town Council should approve a resolution establishing a Capital Project Ordinance for Phase 1 of the project. The public hearing to consider rezoning 4909 Guilford College Road continues from the Aug. 18 meeting. Harvest Church wishes to rezone the property from Agricultural (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Single Family Residential (CZSFR). According to the rezoning application, the church planned expansion of its campus and to use the 1908 Ann Wiley White House on the property for church events. Additional parking was also planned. The Town of Jamestown, N.C. announces the resignation of Town Manager Matthew Johnson, effective September 4, 2026. Johnson was appointed to the position of town manager in January, 2022, after serving Matthew Johnson for five years as assistant town manager and planning director. He was first employed by the town in June 2006 as planning director, and left for a brief time to serve as planning director for the Town of Abingdon, Va. “Serving the Town of Jamestown has been a tremendous privilege,” Johnson said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside the town’s dedicated employees, elected officials, community partners and residents. I am proud of what we accomplished together and especially proud of the strong and capable team in place to lead Jamestown forward. The Town is well positioned to take advantage of the many opportunities ahead, and I wish Jamestown continued success.” On behalf of the Town, Mayor Susan Dickenson stated, “Matthew has helped navigate Jamestown through 20 years of growth, change and development. He leaves with a wealth of experience, skills … and probably a few good war stories. Bell checkers Southern 500 BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS Christopher Bell finally broke his string of seven runner-up finishes while winning Darlington Raceway holiday classic, the Cook Out Southern 500. Often known as the track “too tough to tame” is based on a well-aged, one mile, very fast, yet tight and rough surfaced facility. It’s been held for over 70 years on the same Labor Day weekend. The much-awaited start found Denny Hamlin leading most of the first stage although Tyler Reddick was up on the wheel to win the stage in front of teammates Bubba Wallace and Hamlin. The stage ended when Carson Hocevar intentionally spun Brad Keselowski into the outside wall. The veteran racer was able to make repairs and continue to a 23rd place finish. I would predict a retaliation sometime down the road, although detractors may have to get in line. On to the next stage where several drivers took turns out front such as Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe and Bell who took the second stage win with Kyle Larson and Hamlin in tow. After Larson led for a while, Bell’s Toyota turned up the wick and zoomed out front to finally land his elusive first win of the season in front of Ty Gibbs, Reddick, Blaney and Larson. Despite only six caution periods, the lead changed 29 times among a dozen different drivers. Carnage was kept to a minimum with only two cars not running at the end. Most of the Chase drivers did well except William Byron whose Chevy blew up in the final 100 laps, leaving him next to last in the final stats. France helped make America
As we Americans celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence, I find myself thinking not only about the courage of those who declared and fought for American liberty, but also about those across the Atlantic who chose to stand with them. Among all the things we remember in 1776, I hope we will also remember what France did for us in 1781. By that summer, the American Revolution had endured for years. The outcome was still uncertain. George Washington and the Continental Army were preparing to make what would become their decisive move against Cornwallis at Yorktown, but the success of that effort depended upon something the Americans could not provide for themselves: control of the Chesapeake. That is where France entered the story in a way that changed
the course of American history. Admiral de Grasse sailed the French fleet into the Chesapeake and, on September 5, 1781, fought the British fleet at the Battle of the Capes. The French victory prevented the British from relieving Cornwallis. French ships controlled the bay, and French soldiers under Rochambeau stood beside Washington on land. Lafayette, a Frenchman who had made the American cause his own, was already there. The result was Yorktown. And after Yorktown came American independence. It is easy, 250 years later, to tell the story as though American independence were simply the inevitable triumph of Americans fighting for their own freedom. But history was not inevitable. Matt DiBenedetto is set to return to driving duties behind the wheel of the Young’s Motorsport No. 42 Chevy in the upcoming October O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race date in Las Vegas. From Rumorville Looks like John Hunter Nemechek will be leaving Legacy Motor Club at season’s end leaving a door open for a hungry Josh Berry. No ideas for JHN as of yet, there’s not much “room at the inn” as far as an empty Cup seat, at this time. I scanned through the 2027 Cup, O’Reilly and Truck lineups and there are literally only a few possibilities. Kaulig Racing driver Ty Dillon is in a contract year with a potential opening depending on sponsor opportunities. Any other situation would only be a part-time appearance for one to three races. There’s always race dates with a decent O’Reilly or Truck team or could be NASCAR’s super sub across all three series...and by the way, earlier this season, JHN had a letter of intent from Legacy to pick up his option for 2027. Well, not so much. Looking over some additional silly season driver bits finds Riley Herbst chosen to fill the driver’s seat in the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club’s third team Toyota starting in 2027. Going forward, Monster Energy will back the project in a black wrapped Monster livery. That’s it for this week. CONTINUED FROM FRONT The girls sold raw honey collected from hives in their backyard, handcrafted lucky rabbitsfoot key chains and other arts and crafts they created and gently used clothing. The Maner family has been raising bees for three years. They have a total of 14 hives from which they glean wildflower honey locally and sourwood honey from property they have in the mountains. Apiculture, the practice of managing honeybee colonies, was not something they aspired to, but rather something that quite literally found them. While trying to sell ad space on mugs to James Calhoun for his J & D Raw Honey business, Jessica received a mini education in beekeeping. “He told me honey sells itself and he did not need to advertise,” Jessica said. “But he bought some because my red hair reminded him of his first wife, who had passed away.” The sale was the least of the benefits Jessica gained from Calhoun. He and his wife Darlene soon became good friends with the Maner family. When he learned they had mountain property with sourwood trees on it, he asked to place hives there. He and a friend soon had 24 hives in the mountains and Calhoun started teaching Jessica’s husband Lake about beekeeping. Unfortunately, Calhoun later became sick and passed away in 2024. He had asked that Juliana and Magnolia sing at his funeral, which they did. He had other children from his church sing as well because he wanted his funeral to be joyful. He also wanted the Maners to get his bees and hives. After getting the bees they bought a handpowered honey extractor, but their knowledge of bees was still limited. “We no longer had a teacher
and had to learn beekeeping from ‘trial by fire,’” Jessica said. “We found out Magnolia’s teacher was raising bees and piggybacked our knowledge off each other.” As the bees began to produce more honey, Juliana and Magnolia sold it at their church and from a wagon they pulled around their neighborhood to customers who, for safety, were hand-selected by their mom. At the Sept. 12 farmers’ market, the girls and their mom will be joined by Lake. “Magnolia will have her own stand with her dad making pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches,” Jessica explained. “She will be helping put the toppings that people select on the pancakes.” Like much of what the Maner family does — from living on a houseboat to exchanging homes with a family in another country for several months — the entrepreneurship opportunity is about more than sales. It is a learning opportunity for the girls. They are gaining knowledge about making sales, pricing inventory, profit margins and how to talk with and connect to people. “Selling can be lots of work,” Jessica said. It is obvious the parents think the work is worth the effort as the girls learn life skills beyond any classroom. Available spaces at the Saturday Farmers’ Market on Main are free through Oct. 17. The markets are held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. rain or shine. The Maners invite the community to support all the youth and other vendors at the upcoming Farmers’ Market on Main. GTCC Foundation names High Point native director PRESS RELEASE With more than 17 years in the nonprofit sector, Britney Sink has been named director of the Guilford Technical Community College Foundation. A native of High Point, Sink will serve as the foundation’s chief fundraiser and oversee all aspects of its operations, including major and planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, donor stewardship, alumni engagement and community partnerships. She will work collaboratively with the GTCC president, the foundation board of directors, and college leadership to ensure a unified, mission-driven approach to philanthropy. The GTCC Foundation works to ensure educational excellence through fundraising, advocacy, and promoting awareness of the college’s positive impact on the community. In the past decade, the GTCC Foundation has provided nearly $11 million in funding to enhance student access and
success, college programs, and employee development. “We’re excited to have Britney’s expertise and energy at the GTCC Foundation,” said Jan Knox, vice president of college advancement for GTCC. “Her experience with community college philanthropy gives her a strong understanding of how donor support can transform opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Answer: They will be at the free animal festival on Sept. 26! You are likely to also see a pig, a snake, a baby chicken and who knows what else! Ratatouille lentil soup has one foot in each season

I am not ready for sweaters. Not quite yet. And all the pumpkin-spice devotees need to sit down and let me finish my margarita. Still, there is something intoxicating about the first feeling of autumn in the air. The days are growing shorter. A few leaves are beginning to turn. Summer mornings have lost their loud sparkle and begun to whisper, while sunflowers, mums and dahlias prepare to steal the final scene. This may be my favorite time of year. That fleeting transition when the garden has not accepted that summer is ending, but a curl of wood smoke and a chilly evening make soup sound like a very good idea. Ratatouille lentil soup is my culinary compromise: one foot in summer’s garden and the other stepping toward soup season. Classic ratatouille celebrates eggplant, zucchini, peppers and tomatoes. Roasting the vegetables gives them caramelized sweetness and beautifully browned edges. Lentils transform them into an inexpensive, satisfying main dish packed with protein and fiber. As always, use what you have. Substitute yellow squash for zucchini, use fresh tomatoes when they are abundant or add that slightly imperfect pepper hiding in the crisper. Ratatouille is a formula, not a vegetable roll call enforced by the French culinary police. The soup is even better the following day and freezes nicely. For a meatier variation, add browned Italian sausage. Either way, it is summer produce dressed for autumn, delicious and cheaper than therapy for those of us not quite ready to let the season go. ROASTED RATATOUILLE LENTIL SOUP Yield: 8 servings 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided, plus more for serving 1 medium eggplant, unpeeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes

Summer vegetables meet autumn comfort in this hearty lentil soup. 1 large yellow onion, chopped 2 zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch half-moons 1 yellow summer squash, cut into 1/2-inch half-moons 1 red bell pepper, coarsely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided, plus more to taste 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided, plus more to taste 6 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 2 tablespoons tomato paste 7 to 8 cups lower-sodium vegetable broth 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced, roasted tomatoes 1 1/2 cups uncooked green or brown lentils, rinsed 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar Grated Parmesan cheese, optional Heat oven to 425 F. Divide eggplant, zucchini, squash, onion and bell pepper between two large, rimmed baking sheets. Toss with 4 tablespoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Arrange in even layers. Roast for 25 to 35 minutes, stirring and rotating pans halfway through, until vegetables are tender and browned around the edges. Remove any vegetables that finish early. Meanwhile, heat remaining tablespoon oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Add garlic and Italian seasoning; cook,
stirring, for 30 seconds. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, until it darkens to a rusty red, about 2 minutes. Add 7 cups broth, tomatoes, lentils, remaining salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, until lentils are almost tender, 30 to 40 minutes. Add roasted vegetables and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes, until lentils are tender. Add more broth as needed to reach the desired consistency. Remove from heat; stir in balsamic vinegar. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil and Parmesan, if desired. Add basil, if you have some. Autumn will arrive whether I approve of it or not; seasons have never been especially interested in my scheduling preferences. Until then, I’ll enjoy summer’s final vegetables in a steaming bowl, keep the margarita glass within reach and postpone the sweaters for one more perfectly delicious evening. It will provide a little non-slip protection, especially if the glass is filled with a cold drink. The rubber band is reusable, and you can write the child’s name on the band with a ball point pen in order to identify his or her cup!” • How do you keep cats away from your plants in the garden?
