N.C. PRESS AWARD Carol Brooks, a freelance writer for the Jamestown News, won 2nd Place in News Feature Writing from the North Carolina Press Association on Sept. 10. Brooks’ article was titled “Black history in Jamestown discussed at First Thursday talk.” She has written for the Jamestown News since 2007.
On Oct. 1 the charette gets down to business as engineers, planners, urban designers, stakeholders and others work together to develop concepts for a corridor that serves all users, not just motorists. There is a Stakeholder Work Session from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 2 to 3 p.m. for Main Street businesses. The first session will be for churches and the bicycle-pedestrian community, followed by first responders and NCDOT. The afternoon session will feature Main Street businesses. From 6 to 8 p.m. the public is invited to a pin-up session to review draft concepts and sketches, provide feedback and help refine ideas.
Interested parties who cannot make the meetings are welcome to fill out the online survey located on the Town’s website, https://jamestown-nc. gov. The survey closes Oct. 15. The survey is not only looking for input from businesses along Main Street, according to Colón. Jamestown residents and those passing through town also use Main Street and their comments are welcome. Everyone’s voice matters. This is an important opportunity to help shape the future of Jamestown’s Main Street. Whether you walk, bike, drive, use public transportation, operate a business or just live in the community, your perspective is valuable to the planners.
Town Council to meet earlier in October
LUNCH & LEARN SUPPORT, EDUCATION, HOPE The next Lunch & Learn for families and caregivers of those dealing with any type of dementia will be held Oct. 12 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Jamestown United Methodist Church. It will be on a Monday this month due to scheduling conflicts. After the first of the year, all Lunch & Learns will be on Tuesdays. For parking, look for the yard signs with arrows around the side of the church. The guest speaker is Dennis Toman, founder and attorney with The Elderlaw Firm of Greensboro. A dementia diagnosis can leave families feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about what comes next. Attorney Toman provides all the critical steps to take now to help protect your loved one, avoid costly mistakes, and create a plan for future care, legal decision-making, and financial security. The Elderlaw Firm will provide lunch for the day. Reservations are required and must be made by Oct. 8 at noon. Call the church at 336-454-2717. At this time, there will not be a respite room available for loved ones. Feel free to bring them with you if the subject is appropriate and will not cause them undue stress. For more information, contact Laura Gulledge at 336-906-0430 or lauragulledge@gmail.com; or Melissa Moore at 336-209-3335 or mamamelissa911@ gmail.com. HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF MAIN STREET The Town of Jamestown is conducting a Main Street Corridor Study and wants to hear from you. Residents, business owners, commuters, pedestrians, bicyclists and community members are invited to complete the online survey and share thoughts about the future of Main Street. Visit https://arcg.is/OK8r5D1 or scan the QR code below. The survey closes Oct. 15.
Corridor runs along both sides of Main Street from Ragsdale Road to Teague Drive and includes a section of the railroad tracks, Town Hall, post office, library, shopping center and gas stations/convenience stores, along with other businesses. Fischer spoke about the upcoming public design charettes. On Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. there will be a Public Open House in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. At this meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the Main Street Corridor Study and have an open discussion to share personal ideas, concerns and priorities for the corridor.

Voting will take over the Jamestown Civic Center, home to the Town Council Chambers, in October, resulting in a rescheduling of the Council meeting. The Town Council will meet at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers on Oct. 6. Veterans Day, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Fire Prevention Month will all be recognized with proclamations. Elizabeth Greeson will present an overview of the recent Fall Litter Sweep. A member and alternate member will be appointed for both the Planning Board and ETJ Planning Board. Following the regular meeting, the Council will go into closed session to consult with the town attorney.

Larson dominates Kansas BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS From the start of the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson dominated the race and brought home a rare win in his Chevrolet race car. The Hendrick driver led the opening 36 laps as Ross Chastain and Denny Hamlin led a few laps along the way. Larson easily climbed back to lead the next 60 as the stage wrapped up with yet another notch in the win column. Moving on to stage two saw Larson strong out front with Noah Gragson exploding his Ford engine in a thrilling smokey sideways fashion. Just a few laps into the restart, the field fell apart as cars scattered everywhere from the middle out starting with Carson Hocevar and Ty Gibbs (imagine that…) bouncing off each other and some of those involved. Other names involved were Josh Berry, Zane Smith and Bubba Wallace. Larson’s Chevy came away with a clear win in the second stage, leading by more than several seconds at times. Other drivers in the hunt included Austin
Cindric and Hamlin. The biggest drama in this race came in the final stage when Chase Briscoe managed to take over the lead from Larson with 22 laps to go, but he just couldn’t stay off the outside wall, smacking and riding it several times to the end. Larson grabbed the top spot for the final time on lap 261 and won the big trophy of the day! Looking at the top five finishers saw Cindric, Hamlin, Briscoe and Ryan Blaney in hot pursuit. The checkers marked Larson’s third of the season and 34th career win. The latest Cup points standings has Larson on top by 26 over Hamlin and 50 in front of Christopher Bell.

Not long after Mother Nature stepped in to red flag the race for nearly five hours! Amazingly, a good chunk of the crowd hung around to see the outcome. The final stage turned out pretty much the same as the others with Honeycutt well in charge to take the overall win by 1.3 seconds at the stripe over Eckes, Brent Crews, Daniel Hemric and Ben Rhodes. The up-to-date points has Honeycutt on top, now by 37 points ahead of Riggs and 71 in front of Chandler Smith.

(Left to right): GTCC Board of Trustees Chair Lisa Stahlmann Jessar, Monica Walker, Crystabelle Nwameme, Sebastian King and GTCC President Anthony Clarke, Ph.D. at a GTCC Board of Trustees September swearing-in ceremony.
King, Nwameme and Walker, appointed to GTCC board of trustees PRESS RELEASE Sebastian King, Crystabelle Nwameme, and Monica Walker have been appointed to the Guilford Technical Community College board of trustees. King, a former GTCC student, owns his own federal lobbying firm, King and Co. He is also a partner at Elevation Strategies, a lobbying firm. He earned an associate degree from Lone Star Community College in Texas and his Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M University. King was appointed to the GTCC board of trustees by the North Carolina Senate. “As a former GTCC student, I know firsthand how GTCC impacts those who pursue higher education here,” said King. “Attending GTCC prepared me for my time at Lone Star Community College and Texas A&M and helped ensure a successful college experience. Today, as consultant that works across North Carolina, I know the immense value GTCC brings to supplying skilled workers for the Triad and beyond. I look forward to serving on the GTCC board of trustees and being a part of this stellar institution once again.” Walker retired from Guilford County Schools as its diversity officer and currently operates Groundwater Institute where she hosts racial equity workshops across the country. She was appointed to the board of trustees by the Guilford County Commissioners. “I am a firm believer that education is a pathway to opportunity,” said Walker. “As a member of the GTCC of trustees, I will continue to advocate on behalf of the college to
provide affordable, equitable, and quality higher education opportunities without barriers, ensuring that postsecondary education remains within reach for all students.” Both King and Walker will serve a four-year term. Crystabelle Nwameme is serving her second term as a GTCC Student Government Association officer and, now as president, will also serve on the GTCC Board of Trustees as the college’s student representative. “I am excited to serve on the GTCC board of trustees,” Nwameme said. “Seeing how the current board of trustees comes together and makes big decisions for a community like GTCC will inspire me to do the same within SGA and any initiatives.” Nwameme was named GTCC’s 2026 North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Award recipient and represented the college at the annual awards ceremony. After graduating from GTCC with her Associate in Science degree in spring 2027, Nwameme plans to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to pursue a career in finance. “We are pleased to welcome Sebastian King, Crystabelle Nwameme, and Monica Walker to the GTCC Board of Trustees,” said GTCC President Anthony Clarke, Ph.D. “Each brings a unique perspective, a strong commitment to service, and a shared dedication to helping GTCC expand opportunity for students and strengthen the communities we serve. I look forward to working with all three as we continue advancing the college’s mission.”

WREATHS
CONTINUED FROM FRONT There are two other Wreaths Across America projects in Guilford County but this would be the largest. “We have approximately 3,500 marked veterans’ graves here,” said Neil Whitaker, field director for Hanes Lineberry, “1,200 of them are buried in two designated spaces and others are scattered throughout the cemetery. Some veterans are buried here but do not have military markers.” A Medal of Honor recipient, Army veteran PFC Phill G. McDonald, who became a Vietnam combat casualty on June 7, 1968, is buried at Guilford Memorial Park. The Colts do not expect to be able to place wreaths on each veteran’s grave this first year. They are inviting individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups and other organizations to help sponsor wreaths and are soliciting groups to volunteer to place them on the gravesites during this inaugural event.
The cost is $17 each. $5 of the cost will go into an account to support the project in the future. The last opportunity to purchase a wreath is Nov. 30. Wreaths may be purchased in honor of living veterans or any deceased veteran even if not buried at Guilford Memorial Park. The wreaths however will be placed on a site at the Park. Currently about 800 wreaths have been sponsored. “I knew about Wreaths Across America, but have a different view of it now,” Whitaker said. Morrill Worcester, a Maine businessman began the project in 1992. Wreaths Across America became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The same nursery vendor in Maine continues to make the fresh balsam fir wreaths, which are delivered to sites across America by volunteer truckers. They will be placed on the graves of veterans on the same day.
Prior to the veteran wreath placement by volunteers at Guilford Memorial Park, a short ceremony will be held at noon at the flagpole adjacent to Gate City Boulevard. The community is invited to attend the free event. “We want this to be efficient and respectful,” Jeff said. “A verbal recognition will be repeated as each wreath is placed to pay honor to that individual. The key to making all this happen is working with Hanes Lineberry staff.” In addition to volunteers needed to place the wreaths, they are also needed on pickup day in mid-tolate January. The wreaths will be recycled. “This project is a big challenge,” Jeff said. “It is a 100 percent volunteer effort. But, as the saying goes, many hands make light work.” To volunteer or for more information about the project, contact Jeff Colt at jncolt@gmail.com. is an ideal year to join this program, recognizing all those who have participated in protecting the country’s freedom. Jeff, who served on active duty in the Army for 35 years, had volunteered with Wreaths Across America when he lived in Texas and was impressed with the organization. Jeff and Lyssa now live in Sedgefield and he had seen other patriotic occasions observed at Guilford Memorial Park. He wanted to bring Wreaths Across America to the area. “I think Lyssa and Jeff knew the approach and had the ability to be heard,” Kelley said. “That is why we were accepted this time.” With coordinators in place, a well-established protocol from Wreaths Across America, and board members consisting of representatives from five branches of the military – Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard – the question became, would it be accepted by the community?

Challenging HOO BOY! ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although practical situations continue to dominate this week, there’s time for the Lamb to indulge in the fun things in life — like maybe taking a special someone out for a great evening! TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors relationships. Take time to renew old ones and make time to go where new friends can be found. On a more practical note, expect news about a business deal. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be seeing some progress on a new workplace situation. Meanwhile, family matters might demand more attention, and you’ll want to set aside time to deal with them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship might suddenly present some challenges that you never expected. After talking things out, you might want to consider taking some time to assess what you’ve learned. LEO (July 23 to August 22)
A disappointing response to a request might dampen the Lion’s spirits. But you might want to ask what the reasoning is behind it. What you learn can be of great importance in a future undertaking. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A once-volatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project that you’ve been planning for. Look for an interested party to rally to your support. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business matter that unexpectedly turns into a personal situation could create complications. It’s best to resolve the matter now before too much harm can be done. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Emotions can run high when they involve personal matters that no one really wants to talk about. But this could be a good time to create the means to a workable outcome. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A positive response to a workplace request
could lead the way to other longsought-out changes. Congratulations! A personal situation also takes a welcome turn. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Patience pays off as a once-overwhelming work situation continues to become easier to handle on a one-by-one basis. Look for positive news from a colleague. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be a good idea to take more time to reassess your next move in working out a complex situation. You could benefit from a new perspective on the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might want to consider making time to discuss a change of plans with everyone concerned. Be prepared to explain your actions. Also, be prepared to listen to alternatives. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a strong sense of what’s right and you try to work from this foundation. Your friends and employers see you as reliable. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.
Couch Theatre BY DEMI TAVERAS “Tony” (R) — Dominic Sessa, who had his breakthrough role in the comedy-drama film “The Holdovers” (2023), leads this biographical coming-of-age film directed by Matt Johnson (“Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie”). Sessa plays the titular character Tony, aka Anthony Bourdain, but well before Bourdain ever became the celebrity chef many would come to know and love. Taking place in 1975, the film follows a 19-year-old Tony, who’s a student in Vassar College with aspirations of being a writer. Life doesn’t go exactly as planned, though, and he lands a job at a seafood restaurant in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Once there, however, Tony finds himself drawn to the atmosphere of the restaurant and starts working his way up, catching the attention of the head chef Jose (Antonio Banderas). “Tony” is out now to rent or purchase! (Amazon Prime Video) Photo courtesy of MovieStillsDB

H.P. Literary League hosts author at fall event BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Author entertains and informs Being a member of the High Point Literary League is not just about reading. It is about getting to meet authors, learning why they write and how they craft their ideas into stories. Each fall and spring, members and other guests gather for a meal and to hear a talk by well-known authors whose books they have read and enjoyed. It is a cycle that has continued since 1981. Mary Kay Andrews was guest speaker at the Sept. 16 literary league meeting. She spoke to a full house at the High Point Country Club, after which she signed copies of some of her books, chatting briefly with her fans. “I like her books because they are easy reads,” said Pam Mercer. “But her later books have some plot twists that make them interesting. “I think she was one of the most entertaining and interesting speakers we have had. She seemed real.” Andrews is the bestselling author of more than 30 novels, including her latest “Road Trip.” She began her writing career as a journalist. In 1991, after working for 14 years as a reporter, she left journalism to write

My mother’s roast potatoes: Shaken, not stirred Here's A Tip BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME My mother was not what anyone could call an enthusiastic cook. She cooked because her family insisted on needing dinner every evening. But she could make a roast potato better than anyone. Her potatoes came out of the oven deeply golden and crisp outside, with soft, fluffy centers. They were flavorful enough to eat just as they were, no butter, toppings or gravy required. Although, if you enjoy gilding lilies, a little gravy never hurts. Like many British cooks, Mom began with russet potatoes, peeled and cut into generous chunks. She boiled them until nearly cooked through, drained them and gave the covered pot a vigorous shake. That rough treatment wasn’t incidental. It created ragged, floury edges that became extraordinarily crisp in the oven. Her seasoning was salt. Pepper was considered “spicy” to her cautious British palate. My

Shaken, not stirred, and roasted to a magnificent crunch. American father compensated by adding enough pepper at the table to make his potatoes blackened. Her big trick was adding a little baking soda to the cooking water. The alkaline water helps soften the potatoes’ outer surfaces and release more starch. Shaking creates a craggy coating that becomes wonderfully crunchy in the oven. Moderate heat matters, too. Starting potatoes in cold water helps the centers and outsides cook evenly. Bring them to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat promptly. High heat can leave the centers lagging while the outsides soften excessively and begin breaking apart. Remember this when making mashed potatoes, too; unevenly cooked potatoes is what causes lumps. Finally, let the potatoes steam dry, preheat the oil and leave room between pieces. Crowd
them and they steam politely. Give them elbow room and they develop bronzed, brittle shells that make people stand there and eat them right off the baking pan. MOM’S MAGNIFICENT ROAST POTATOES Yield: 4-6 servings Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes 3-4 pounds russet potatoes 1 tablespoon kosher salt, plus more for serving 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 cup olive oil, divided Black pepper, optional Preheat oven to 400 F. Peel potatoes and cut them into 2-inch chunks. Place in a large pot and add enough cold water to cover them by 1 inch. Add kosher salt and baking soda. The water should be well seasoned. Think ocean water, not bathwater. Bring to a boil over medium-

high heat, reduce heat and simmer 10 to 15 minutes, until nearly cooked through but not falling apart. A knife should meet just a little resistance in the center. Meanwhile, pour 3 tablespoons olive oil onto a large, rimmed baking sheet. Place it in the oven for about 10 minutes, until the oil is hot and shimmering. Drain potatoes thoroughly and let them steam dry in the colander for 2 minutes. Return them to the pot with lid and shake vigorously. Like James Bond’s martini, they should be shaken, not stirred. Their surfaces should become rough, floury and slightly mashed around the edges. Drizzle with the remaining tablespoon olive oil and turn gently to coat. Carefully transfer potatoes to the hot baking sheet; they should sizzle on contact. Turn each piece in the oil and arrange with space between them. Give them a liberal sprinkle of salt. Roast without disturbing for 25 minutes. Turn the pieces and roast 15 to 20 minutes longer, or until deeply browned, crisp and audibly crunchy. Optional: Broil them a few minutes for extra color and crunch. Serve hot, after sampling at least one directly from the pan for quality control purposes. This is both wise and necessary.

BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE'S A TIP • Here’s a tip for you waist-watchers out there: Wait until Halloween Day to buy the candy. The in-house sweets won’t be haunting you throughout October. • Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels. • Now’s the time to install weather-stripping or caulk for the fall and the winter. To find drafts, try this trick. Light a taper candle and run it very slowly along the cracks of your windows. When you see the flame flicker, that’s where you have a draft leak. • Want to save money and be a good environmental servant? Get with the times — the old times, that is. Buy secondhand items and have household items repaired instead of throwing them out. Good-quality clothes can be sold or donated to charity shops; furniture and household items can be sold or donated to charity as well, or repurposed into new rooms. • “To keep sauces from splattering and dirtying the inside of your microwave, cover the food with a damp paper towel or a coffee filter.” — E.C. in Utah • Now you can have your tea and clean something too. Teabags can be used to clean woodwork. Rub wood softly with a damp bag. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.
