Council approves Harvest Church rezoning Neighbors still opposed
BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com After much discussion, the Jamestown Town Council on Sept. 15 unanimously approved by a 3-0 vote the rezoning request by Harvest Church for 2.18 acres at 4909 Guilford College Road from Agricultural (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Single Family Residential (CZ-SFT). The church wants to utilize the existing residence and structure on the property for church
accessory uses and allow for construction of additional parking. Councilmember Pam Burgess was absent. The town’s Technical Review Committee discussed the project March 26 of this year and Town staff found the proposed rezoning request consistent with the Envision Jamestown Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2021. The matter had been discussed at two Planning Board meetings (May 11 and June 8 of this year). One thing the Board
found was that the proposed zoning amendment was unreasonable because the evidence presented during the public hearing indicated that existing development associated with the adjoining church property has resulted in ongoin June. ing concerns regarding The Town Council storm water runoff and heard the request July 21 drainage impacts affect- and Aug. 18 before continuing neighboring residential ing the meeting to Sept. 15. Taking time to remember BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The Jamestown Park Ladies Golf Association (JPLGA) held a memorable tournament on Sept. 11 at Jamestown Park. It was a time to enjoy the game members like so much, but also a somber time to acknowledge the tragedy of 9-11-2001 on its 25th anniversary and pay it forward with a donation to today’s first responders. Patriotism was in full force as seen through the red, white and blue attire worn by many participants in the inaugural Red, White & Golf Member-Guest Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament included 71 players, community members and Jamestown Park Golf Course employees. BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Built in 1915, for years the large brick building at the corner of Main Street and Ragsdale Road served the educational needs of students in a large section of Guilford County. Once scheduled for demolition, a grassroots effort not only saved the building but also transformed it into a public library and educational archives serving the entire community. Since the library opened in 1988, the same effort that saved the building has been dedicated to its upkeep. What originated as a hotdog supper fundraiser to help support continuing needed repairs has evolved into a barbecue meal complete with that Southern favorite and musical entertainment to highlight the late afternoon activity. What could Main Street in Jamestown look like in the future? What can be done to attract not only shoppers but businesses as well? Do you envision trees, a roundabout at Guilford Road, a lower speed limit? Planning Director José Colón updated the Town Council on Sept. 15 about the upcoming Main Street Corridor Study, which will cover these questions. “Our Planning Department is very excited to get on with this endeavor,” Colón said. “I want to give a brief overview of the study’s focus, our recent steering committee kickoff meeting, and then upcoming opportunities for public input, which are very, very exciting. “This study takes a comprehensive SEE STREET, PAGE 4

ABOUT TOWN
Town Council was busy BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com
The Jamestown Town Council meeting on Sept. 15 covered a lot of topics. Katie Weiner, town clerk and assistant town manager, has stepped up as interim town manager after the resignation of Matthew Johnson. “The town has received some complaints regarding overgrown right-of-ways on Guilford College Road and Jamestown Parkway,” Weiner said in her report.” I contacted NCDOT to learn when those areas would be mowed. They informed us the State would not allow them to mow from Sept. 15 thru Nov. 12 during the time that campaign signs are permitted. I spoke with SEE COUNCIL, PAGE 4

Logano settles near brawl at Bristol BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS It was a Saturday night where a race broke out among a fist fight! It appeared as if race long leader Ryan Blaney was very close to his third win of the season until bad boy Carson Hocevar squeezed on the Penske driver and into the outside wall and out of the race. That left Ty Gibbs and Hocevar to duke it out, but while they were arguing for space, Joey Logano zoomed down the bottom side of the track and into the winner’s circle. The Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway started like most NASCAR races and built up to a chaotic ending in post-race theatrics, especially between combatants Blaney and Hocevar. Early laps of the event were dominated by a rapid Kyle Larson’s stout Chevy, leading the race for the first 42 laps followed by Logano leading for the first of three times from laps 45 to the end of the first stage on 130. Larson and Denny Hamlin were next in line. Blaney took charge with his rapid Ford Mustang for the next 120 circuits to win the stage with Gibbs and Logano giving chase. The final stage will be spoken about for months if not longer. Sixty laps from the end, a three-car wreck on the front stretch involving Cole Custer, Alex Bowman and Gibbs radically slowed the pace. Bowman’s day was done with too much damage to continue. A handful of laps later, the yellow flag flew for a two-car incident between Josh Berry and William Byron.
Both were able to continue and the big event of the day was able to take place. As Hocevar closed in rapidly on leader Blaney, he rubbed the rear corner of Blaney’s car turning the car around and backwards hard into the outside wall. The Penske Ford that led most of the laps on the day was out of contention. Back to racing where Hocevar and Gibbs were arguing over the lead, Logano’s Pennzoil Ford zipped low to record his 40th Cup checkers. Rounding out the top five finishers included Larson, Hocevar, Christopher Bell and Gibbs. The latest points stats have Larson elevated to lead by a mere single point over Hamlin and 16 points ahead of Logano. RWR Note: Hocevar has thrown down the gauntlet with his latest actions. If any driver goes to him in person, be prepared to throw down without any thoughts or discussion! On the track you cannot trust any actions from this loose cannon. Creed top dog in Bristol Food City 300 He only led three laps, but Sheldon Creed led the most important ones of the night to capture his third series win of the year. The Food City 300 started with Jesse Love leading the first 81 laps, yet Justin Allgaier led the final few laps to win the first stage in front of Carson Kvapil and Brent Crews. By lap 125, Natalie Decker was slugging along in heavy traffic when Anthony Alfredo bumped the slower driver out of the way. Fifty laps later, an uneventful stage ended with Kvapil winning the stage ahead of Allgaier and Love.
After Kvapil led an impressive 150 laps, Allgaier and Love led briefly as they watched Creed’s Chevy reclaim the lead of the final few laps to win his third series race of the season. Wrapping up the top five finishers included William Sawalich, Crews, Allgaier and Corey Day. The latest points standings have Creed out front by just three points over Allgaier with Kvapil only nine points in arrears. Garcia wins first truck race at Bristol Layne Riggs handily won the first two stages of Thursday’s UNOH 250 Craftsman Truck race at Bristol Motor Speedway and appeared enroute to winning the whole thing. That is, until Jake Garcia got up on the wheel to take over the lead with 20 to go, winning the event in front of Bayley Currey and Stewart Friesen. The race started under clear conditions and an anxious crowd. Riggs’ seemingly perfect night started to fall apart during the first pit stop, sending him to sixth from the top spot. Things only got worse from there, as the slow pit stop also came up short on torquing the lug nuts as the wheel came loose forcing a pit stop to change the loose wheel. They lost a few laps and never really recovered to lead again. Kaden Honeycutt and Chandler Smith both finished second and third in both stages. The final stage found Riggs and Nick Leitz tangled up with Leitz out and Riggs race truck with more damage. After a 14-minute red flag for clean-up, Garcia’s Ford led the final
20 circuits, earning his first checkers (after 94 winless starts) ahead of Curry, Friesen, Justin Haley and 16-year-old rookie Tristen McKee. The latest points standings show Riggs still on top thanks to a large lead in the standings. The lead now is only three points ahead of Honeycutt with Smith 30 points back in third. QUIK BITS … DiBenedetto returns for double! Retired NASCAR Cup driver Matt DiBenedetto has doubled his racing lineup this year with the announcement of adding a Charlotte event to his Oct. 3 start in Las Vegas. The 35-year-old driver is all set to strap into the team’s Young’s Motorsports No. 42 Chevy in an effort to expand his 127 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts. From Rumorville NASCAR officials will revisit World Wide Technology Raceway, the scene of the most recent race where roughly 10 race cars blocked the lane completely during competition. The dangerous narrow pit lane is the second most narrow on the circuit and needs to be addressed. Major and minor roadwork will need to take place to ensure a safer situation. That’s it for this week. Next week, look for NASCAR news from wide open Kansas. The schedule calls for truckers on Friday with Cup series action on Saturday. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as Indy and F1 racing. If you have questions or comments, contact Russ at racinwithruss@gmail.com

their request several times since May 11 by adding conditions favorable to the neighboring community on Kacia Court. Those residents complained about several things regarding the rezoning but mainly about the water runoff they currently receive believed to be from the church’s parking lot, which is on a level above their properties. Both sides hired civil engineers to look at the situation and results were conflicting. Harvest Church then offered voluntary suggestions, but note they are not conditional nor permanent, just “good faith.” On Sept. 15, Kacia Court residents off Grandover Parkway still opposed the rezoning. “This has been a difficult case for all of us,” remarked Councilmember Jim Westmoreland after public comments ended. “I mentioned before I have spent some time with the pastor and his team and do appreciate the conditions and information shared this evening and the continued follow-up work. I met with the neighbors last week and walked through things and saw firsthand some of their concerns from their perspective. “As Councilwoman Glanville mentioned, some of this is within the purview of what we’re doing tonight with the rezoning of the property and some of it’s not.” There were two things that should be looked at, Westmoreland added. “In the event this is approved tonight, there’s a whole list of things that need to be followed up on and I would hope that there would be some continued very good discussion between the church and the neighborhood as plans are being developed and finalized and things actually happen sooner than later.” he said. “But in the event that it’s not passed, there are some things that the neighborhood has legitimately asked for relative to their property and a need to continue to keep that clean, keep that safe. The storm water issue remains an unresolved thing from that perspective,” he added.
“I plan to support [the rezoning].” “I appreciate everybody who came out tonight and spoke,” said Councilmember Jim Gibson. “I know it’s a very difficult situation and as a gentleman said, it’s a unique situation in a rezoning because it does have some characteristics about it that are not common to other places. “The church is in a situation where they have a good problem in that they’ve done a lot of good work in the community and continue to grow which adds to the community. I certainly appreciate what they’ve done, what they continue to do, and hope that continues to be successful. “I too agree with [Westmoreland] that it does meet the acceptable usage for this area. In terms of questions about rezoning, what is acceptable usage and what is beneficial and I think it does meet that criteria. I go back to what the Planning Board said about the reservations they had were about the use of the house, which I think has been clarified a little bit better. “I think we’re still at an impasse on water,” Gibson said. “Both sides have an opinion on that and somewhere in the middle is the reality of that. There’s some concerns about what actually will happen and what could happen. I do understand that things will be done in accordance with all the laws and guidelines in Guilford County and Jamestown and that sort of thing. “The big concern is the impact on the neighborhood which again, as Ms. Glanville pointed out, it’s not really part of the zoning. It’s two different things. I understand that it’s just hard to remove it in this situation because I think there’s still enough unanswered questions about what will be done, what’s promised and what will be done. Some of those things have such an impact on the neighborhood that if they can’t be done, then that’s concerning. “As difficult as it is, I don’t think I would support this rezoning.” Gibson said. He later changed his mind. “This has been a very long hard process for everyone involved,” said Glan-
ville. “I very much realize that. I very much realize the impact that it can have and potentially on both parties. I don’t want to be flippant about that in any way or dismissive of anyone’s perspective. What I’ve really had to try to do in my mind is think, what pieces are zoning issues and what pieces are neighbor disputes that need to be settled in a different way. That’s why I was asking the [earlier] questions. “But that doesn’t really have to do with the zoning because those are some neighbor dispute issues. We can’t really control who our neighbors are. I have neighbors that do things that I don’t particularly like too much, but that’s their right to do on their property.” She asked a hypothetical question to Planning Director José Colón if there were safeguards in place so that, if the rezoning is denied, new homeowners on Kacia Court in the future decide they would prefer a parking lot put in by the church, could the Technical Review Committee at the time approve it without knowing the history. “I feel like saying, ‘OK, we’re going to put these conditions on,’ it can possibly prevent some of the things that people were nervous about happening, like a full-out parking lot,” Glanville said. “I think that putting aside other issues that have to do with neighbor disputes and knowing what could happen is the best way to get the result we want and that we think is good for Jamestown. “The best way we can do it is through this conditional zoning. I don’t think it makes sense to keep this as agriculture. “I’m going to be in support of it,” she said. Councilmembers then discussed the various conditions offered by Harvest Church. Town Attorney Rob Brown noted the conditions that are being put in place “are a law that we’re passing. It’s a rezoning. It runs with the land. It has nothing to do with the individual owners of either of the properties.” “I make a motion that we approve the proposed rezoning request for the

Maddy has appeared in movies, commercials and theater. She especially loves theater and is currently playing the part of Cinderella in the production of “The Stinky Cheese Man
mainstreet. There is a QR code. You can scan it now and take it. The survey closes Oct. 15. The next major opportunity for community participation is the public design charette open house Sept. 30 from 6-8 p.m. in the Civic Center. A design charette is a collaborative workshop where architects, planners, engineers and community members meet for days to build a shared vision, whether it be for a park, a building or a neighborhood, or in this case, the downtown corridor. On Oct. 1, the team will hold stakeholder sessions. Churches and the bi-ped community will meet from 9-10 a.m. and first responders and NCDOT from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Main Street businesses will be 2-3 p.m. Results from the Sept. 30 meeting will be available Oct. 1, 6-8 p.m. as well as a look at survey responses to determine if are we headed in the right direction. The town will provide more information this week regarding the charette schedule and stakeholder sessions as well as other public input opportunities. “This is not just limited to the people who live here or for our visitors but for people who like the town,” Colón said. “We want to get their feedback on how they feel about our main street. “We’re here to listen through the public survey and through the charette. After that, we will analyze through existing conditions, the data and input that we got. Then, we will design and develop concepts.”

CONTINUED FROM FRONT The book contains coloring pages, self-care tips, to-do lists, scriptures and discussions about emotions and how to express oneself. There are journaling pages on which readers can jot their own thoughts and feelings. “The book is meant to inspire but also give girls an opportunity to express themselves in writing,” Maddy said. Maddy is a 7th grader at the Experimental School of Greensboro. In addition to keeping up with her studies, she stays busy modeling, acting, boxing and producing her own social media channel. In July she participated in the 2026 Universal Preteen contest in Texas where she represented North Carolina and came in first in her age division. “We were required to do speaking, fashion modeling and a personal interview,” Maddy said. “I talked about my community and my platform, Your BIG Day.” During the past four years, Maddy, her family and friends have invested more than 1,000 hours in the Your BIG Day project, by telling others that tomorrow would be their BIG Day. “The idea started when I was about six years old,” Maddy explained. “I had a friend and wanted to help
look at how Main Street functions today and where improvements could make the corridor safer, more accessible and more welcoming. This includes traffic operations, intersections, pedestrian crossings, bicycle connections, parking and access to businesses and civic destinations. It also considers streetscape improvements and the future character of our main street. “The goal is to identify our priorities that the town can advance toward future design and funding with consideration for cost and project phasing.” The Town is working with Stantech Consulting Services on the study. The first steering committee meeting was on Aug. 27 and provided an opportunity to review the project goals, scope, schedule and public engagement approach. The committee discussed concerns along the corridor including safety, accessibility, parking and traffic operations. “Those conversations helped establish the initial direction of the study and the information needed so work moves forward,” Colón said. “Our consultant was super excited because we were already coming up with solutions during our first steering committee meeting.” Committee members include an avid bicyclist, business owner, a member from the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Councilmember Jim Westmorland, a traffic and transportation expert. A survey is now available on the Town’s newsfeed and social media at www.jamestown-nc.gov/
CONTINUED FROM FRONT and Other Stupid Tales” at the Greensboro Cultural Arts Theatre. She has done print modeling for Winn Dixie, Hamrick’s and Adios and just returned from New York where she participated in Fashion Week. That was followed by a trip to Atlanta where she was on a reality show called “Kind and Seek.” The show raised approximately $38,000 for Feeding America. Maddy uses Facebook and Instagram to air “Mondays with Maddy” that share a variety of inspirational saying. It can be found @maddys_place. Maddy not only gets inspiration from her mother, but also from her dad, the Rev. Norris Richardson, pastor of True Deliverance Fellowship in Greensboro. She has three older brothers, James, Junior and Jude. Learning about her involvement in such a variety of activities, it might be hard to imagine what the future holds for this preteen. But Maddy has high aspirations. She hopes to study science in college and begin a school for girls where they could not only learn academics, but also acting and modeling. “It would be a safe place for all girls,” Maddy said. With Maddy’s drive and ambition, the future might just hold her BIG Day.

Wright Archer [of NC DOT] earlier today and he’s going to find a creative solution.” Mayor Susan Dickenson said it’s a new law, Senate Bill 391, passed in 2025. In August, the Guilford County Sheriff’s office received 15 total reports including 5 thefts. 1 fraud, 1 assault, 3 weapon or drug violations and 5 calls for service. In total, there were 86 calls for service, 93 self-initiated calls, 44 traffic stops and 7 citations. The Town Council honored the life and legacy of Al Stewart with a resolution. Eli Arnold, Ragsdale High School’s student representative to the Town Council, received his Eagle Scout award during the week. His project was a shelving unit at Jamestown Elementary School. Arnold said that for school year 202526, Ragsdale raised a letter grade from a C to B. Composite score of grades had raised 16.2 percentage points, the second highest jump in proficiency in the county. The school is now one of the top five performing schools in the district. He also gave a report on sports teams activity. Public Coments Sharon Hovis reminded Council about Jamestown Parkway. “I call it the Jamestown Speedway.” Please look into putting in a crosswalk at Dillon Road. I’m in communication with NCDOT who says if you do your part, they’ll do their part.” With the crosswalk they can put yellow caution signs out. “I fear for pedestrians in that area.” Donna Peterson, representing the League of Women Voters of the Piedmont Triad, a nonpartisan organization. “We’re hosting a candidate forum on Oct. 8 at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Hilltop Road. It’s for District 26 NC State Senate with Steve Luking and Sam Page. Cheryl Harvey – “I know you are working on a situation about our ordinance. But what difference does it make if it’s not followed through? The same properties in my neighborhood that I reported years ago and I recently reported them all again plus some more. Nothing’s ever been done. There’s still the exact same mess with skeletons 10 feet tall
that hang year-round and junk over the front yards. There’s a jungle on Potter. We’ve got several of them around town. They’ve not changed. There needs to be some accountability if we’re paying an ordinance person.” She was glad Katie Weiner is now interim town manager was here and thinks there’ll be change. “I feel [the former manager] played favorites and didn’t enforce what needed to be done to keep Jamestown looking nice. “I don’t see anything the ordinance guy has done. I’ve been here talking for two years for the same properties. Something is wrong here. You’re wasting your money paying this guy. There needs to be another person. I’m going to stay on it. There’s never any change.” Sheriff Sam Page, N.C. Senate candidate, thanked everyone the day his people came to visit for “the opportunity to hear what Jamestown’s needs were. “I looked into the PFAs conversation and there’s been a recent settlement with Attorney General Jeff Jackson down east where the industries have provided PFAs into the water system. That’s something I would like to look at as your next senator, working with attorney general issues because it affects our environment. I met with Steve Troxler, our agricultural secretary about preservation of our farmlands and how important it is. Once we lose those farmlands you don’t get them back. We don’t have farms, we don’t eat. We need to hear that when we do development. It’s smart development. We also don’t forget our greenways.” (Editor’s note: PFAs are per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a large group of synthetic, human-made chemicals often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body.) To end the evening, the Council went into closed session per General Statute 143.318 to consult with the town attorney to preserve the attorney/client privilege between the attorney and Town Council. No further business was conducted when the Council resumed the regular session. The Town Council meetings may be viewed live at www.youtube.com/c/ TownofJamestownNC. Couch Theatre BY DEMI TAVERAS “Unabomber” (R) — One young actor who never came to play and is always up for a more mature role than his peers is Jacob Tremblay (“Sovereign”). Tremblay leads this crime drama as Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, opposite none other than the prolific Russell Crowe (“The Get Out”) and recent Emmy winner Shailene Woodley (“Paradise”). The film alternates between two timelines, with the first spanning Kaczynski’s time at Harvard University starting in 1958, where he engages in psychological experiments. Meanwhile, the second begins in 1994, catapulting viewers to the FBI’s pursuit of him for his crimes as a domestic terrorist. The two timelines work together to
show Kaczynski’s descent into becoming the Unabomber and to also provide some insight as to his motives. Look out for it on Sept. 25. We survived summer. Autumn officially arrives Sept. 22, bringing cooler weather, earlier sunsets, hoodies, warm drinks and all the cozy fall things. To welcome the season properly, I’m turning my attention to one of autumn’s unsung kitchen heroes: chicken-apple sausage. This versatile convenience balances rich, savory flavor with a subtle sweetness that feels right at home beside cabbage, onions, winter squash, sweet potatoes and, of course, more apples. You can grill the links and tuck them into buns. Roast them whole with cabbage, onions and apples for a braised-style supper. Slice them onto a sheet pan with sweet potatoes, or saute slices and add toothpicks for an easy appetizer. Chicken-apple sausage travels happily from skillet to soup pot to party. Its subtle sweetness pairs beautifully with mustard and cabbage, rosemary and potatoes, sage and squash, or garlic and white beans. That flexibility matters when the plan is less “follow a recipe” and more “please turn these groceries into dinner before we eat dry cereal over the sink.” Its greatest virtue is speed. Most chicken-apple sausage sold in supermarkets is already fully cooked, so check the package. With fully cooked sausage, you are browning and heating it rather than cooking raw meat. Once the accompanying vegetables are tender and the sausage is hot, dinner is ready. Anyone who has stared into the refrigerator at 5:47 p.m. will CHICKEN SAUSAGE recognize this as a small kitchen miracle. AND APPLE SOUP Chicken sausage can also be leaner than Yield: 4 servings traditional pork sausage, although recipes Total time: 25 minutes and nutrition numbers vary considerably. 2 tablespoons olive oil Compare labels, particularly for saturated 4 fully cooked chicken-apple sausage

• Spring bulbs need a few weeks in the ground to get established before the first of the frosts. If you’re just getting around to planting your spring bulbs, here is a great garden design tip: Use kebab skewers to figure out the bulbs’ placement in the garden. • “Place an ice cube (or chips) in carpet divots left behind by furniture legs. This will help the fibers “plump up,” and the spot will disappear!” — A.L. in Utah • Felt circles are great for putting under small appliances on the kitchen counter. They shift better, but they don’t scratch the countertops. You can find them at the hardware store, or make your own custom ones by cutting out what you need from a piece of felt and attaching it to the bottom of your appliance with double-stick tape or even a drop of glue! • Running a machine that isn’t full not only wastes energy and water, it also wastes your money because you are paying to run more washes. Always fill the machine — but remember not to overload it! This applies to both your dishwasher and your clothes washer. • “To help repel the dust on baseboards between cleanings, wipe with a used dryer sheet. To make this even easier, you can put the dryer sheet over a Swiffer-type floor cleaner. This way, you do not even have to bend down.” — M.E. in Alabama • “You can use plain alcohol on a paper towel to wipe down your house telephone. I do this a couple of times a week during cold season. Also, purchase a pack of electronics wipes so everyone can keep his or her cellphone screen clean. Think about it: We constantly touch the screen with our fingers, then stick it right up to our faces!” — W.R. in New York Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 1800 Pembrook Dr., Suite 300, Orlando, FL 32810. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.
