Church opens doors to a variety of worship opportunities BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Change is not always easy to accept, but sometimes it is necessary. Sometimes it can even be for the best. Change is the situation members of First Baptist Church of Jamestown found they needed. Their membership was dwindling and something had to be done. Members discussed selling their church building and giving the money to the Baptist Children’s Home.
But Mary Michael, church treasurer, felt if the building was sold, it would no longer house a church. “This is a prime real estate location,” Michael said. “But it needed to remain a church.” What changed the trajectory of First Baptist and its small congregation was another church looking for a place to worship and members who were willing to rent space to them for that purpose. Michael Barrett, director of missions for the Piedmont

Baptist Association, told Michael about the church that had sold their building and needed a place to worship. After its pastor Mike Wynn met with Michael, the two congregations became acquainted through combined activities and in January 2023 Discovery Bible Church began holding worship services in the fellowship hall of First Baptist. “Two years later we relocated to the educational building of the church Wynn said. “It did not take much to set the area up for worship
and create a nursery. Our congregation meets Sunday mornings at 10:30.” Meanwhile Pastor Daniel Webb, whose congregation Beyond the Walls Ministries was meeting at Ragsdale High School, approached Michael about meeting at First Baptist. He, his wife Tammy and other members of his church attended several fellowship dinners at First Baptist. “It is good to start as friends over food and get to SEE CHURCH, PAGE 4
Grandover shooter appears in court from hospital bed BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com On Sept. 9, Michael Hargett was denied bond for two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Grandover residents Kathryn Binkley — his next-door neighbor Michael Hargett — and Margaret Collins. He also pointed a weapon at and threatened Gina Tribuzio who was talking with the other women. Unable to leave his hospital bed, Hargett appeared before a judge in a video from the hospital to receive the news. He is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Hargett is also charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling and assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats. He could face a maximum of life in prison for each of the first-degree charges if convicted. He is expected back in court in October. Hargett had been charged with misdemeanor domestic violence June 4 but the charge was dismissed July 8.

DMV to drop registration card, stickers BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Don’t like to fumble in your wallet or glove compartment for your car registration when asked? Or dislike having to put that sticker on your license plate to indicate when it should be renewed? If so, your problems will be solved Oct. 1 when the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) phases out those registrations and renewals applied for on or after that date. This ruling was part of the North Carolina budget Session Law 2026-4 approved in the summer. Anyone still wanting a paper registration card may apply to the DMV either in person or online. There may be a small fee for this. During a traffic stop, law enforcement will check a vehicle’s registration via computers in their squad car based on the license plate. “This change streamlines operations and helps reduce fraud associated with counterfeit stickers,” said DMV Communications Director Marty Homan. According to the NCDMV, “Police officers in North Carolina already use electronic verification systems to confirm vehicle registration status in real time. License plate stickers and printed registration cards have become redundant.
Eliminating them will generate significant cost savings for the state and help reduce instances of fraud and counterfeit stickers.” The change saves the DMV money on printing and postage. Several other states, including Pennsylvania, Idaho, Connecticut and New Jersey have already done away with the cards and stickers. Drivers must still renew registration every year and all vehicles must still undergo inspection no more than 90 days before registration expires. Based on current DMV guidance and the wording of the law, inperson registration remains part of the process. DMV currently lists online renewal, self-service kiosks, in-person renewal and renewal by mail as options. The new law allows a printed registration copy to be requested in person or through an online portal. License plate agencies should still stay open because they also handle title work, plates, transfers and other registration-related services. For more information, visit ncdmv.gov.

The 21th Village Fair returns Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the historic Mendenhall Homeplace, 603 W. Main St., Jamestown. The Historic Jamestown Society is once again sponsoring the event. “This is a great time to get out and visit with family and friends,” said Jay McQuillan, president of the Historic Jamestown Society. “There will be many exhibitors who can show their wares and explain how their crafts work.” Early settlers throughout the country usually were not close to a town to get supplies, including clothing, shoes, bedding, animal harnesses, seeds and grain. This meant families had to learn how to make many of

Larson ends win drought at World Wide Technology BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS In what became one of the longest races of the season, Kyle Larson won the Enjoy Illinois 300 at the World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois on Saturday night. The nearly four-hour event was packed with action, but mostly under caution for a record 87 laps while the drivers sorted out who is supposed to be where. It all started under sunny skies with Joey Logano heading up the pack, but on the seventh lap, Riley Herbst got in the spin cycle for the first of three times! There seemed to be wrecks every other lap at times. Logano was credited with winning the first stage with Christopher Bell and Larson not far behind. It took three more yellow flags to end the second stage with Larson winning the stage ahead of Logano and Brad Keselowski. On the final stage Keselowski ran very strong, but several five and six car wrecks involving drivers such as Gibbs, Connor Zilisch, Tyler Reddick, Bell and Josh Berry brought the action to a halt. Larson’s Chevy battled with Keselowski until finally passing Alex Bowman for the lead on lap 228 with a narrow .33 second margin of victory. Capping the top five finishers included Logano, William Byron and Ross Chastain. The latest points standings show Denny Hamlin on top, amazing after a tough day on the track for the Toyota team finishing ninth. Hamlin leads Larson by only nine points
the street from his home sold many leather goods he made. It is perceivable he made the shoes for his family, judging by the number of cobbler tools found in the bank barn. It is believed a cobbler’s shop stood to the west of the Mendenhall House. At the Village Fair, stroll among the heritage crafters and venders displaying many items that the early settlers made at home as well as tools used in everyday life. Some items that crafters/ venders will have include wooden clocks and other wood items, handmade jewelry, pet collars, canes,
as Bell sits third now among many changes. Blown tires eliminated several drivers during the race including Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott. (Editor’s note: Several drivers suffered from “brake failure” due to brake rotors exploding due to heat.) Very hot temps and track issues created adverse conditions with hard hits in the walls, usually ending their days. Larson’s latest checkers was his 33rd trip to the winner’s circle and first in nearly two seasons. Bowman’s win was among his best as he braved the recent loss of his best bud, Finn (family dog). Love checkers Illinois NuWay 250 Jesse Love won the NuWay 250 at the World Wide Technology Raceway after leading 70 of the 180 laps scheduled. Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer capped the top three finishers. The race started with an early caution flag brought out by a solo spin by Taylor Gray on lap 14, easily brought back to green with Carson Kvapil leading the pack. Leading up to the first major pit stop found a very rare multi-car wreck blocking the entire pit lane, forcing a red flag situation. Hard to say what started it, but it was quite a sight to see cars scattered about the narrow pit lane and fortunate not to report any driver or crew injuries. Some of the 10 cars involved included Nick Sanchez, Harrison Burton and Anthony Alfredo. Kvapil was credited with the stage one win
next to Corey Day and Justin Allgaier. Austin Hill led for a bit, but it was Love standing tall to claim the second stage win in front of Sam Mayer and Kvapil. On to the final stage where Day and Sawalich traded a little more than paint after watching the two bounce off each other with a heavy side swipe sending Day into the inside wall and out of the race. This has been an on-going scenario with these two with no end in sight. After Love’s Chevy took the lead on lap 164, he set sail for his latest of four career wins in front of Creed and Mayer. Gray and Kvapil wrapped up the top five finishers. The latest points standings have Creed in front of Allgaier by a mere three points and nine in front of Kvapil. Kimi F1 Spanish GP winner Kimi Antonelli zoomed into the lead late in the inaugural Spanish GP held at newly built Madring racetrack, eclipsing drivers Max Verstappen and pole sitter Lando Norris. Multi-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton had a good start but bailed out of this year’s race early with serious brake issues in his Mercedes race car. The overall points battle is widening after watching the 20-year-old winner claim his eighth win this season. Antonelli has an 81 point lead over teammate George Russell and 101 points separates him from Hamilton. All signs are pointing to celebrating Kimi as the youngest world F1
driver ever! QUIK BITS … Day reups! Corey Day has been signed to a contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports to pilot the No.17 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Chevy while setting up a handful of Cup starts for next year. The young driver will have to stay off the tow trucks if he plans on sticking around. I’ve also seen him stick his nose in places he shouldn’t have. From Rumorville Truck owner Spencer Boyd has announced rookie Caden Kvapil will drive their No. 76 Nor Cal Equipment Chevy Silverado in the upcoming Craftsman Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. In the same breath, rookie William Sawalich has been tapped to pilot the Halmer Friesen Racing No. 62 SoundGear Toyota in the same Bristol event. All I can say is these two young rookies have picked quite a place for their very first truck start. They don’t call it “the palace of pain” for nothing. That’s it for this week. Next week, look for NASCAR news from Bristol. High banks, short chutes, beatin’ and bangin’ expected with Thursday truckers, Friday night with O’Reilly Auto Parts Series action followed by the Cup main event on Saturday. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as IndyCar and F1 racing. If you have questions or comments, contact Russ at racinwithruss@gmail.com
FAIR CONTINUED FROM FRONT gardening items, bandanas, children’s crafts and fiber arts. A favorite of many are the quilting groups on hand to exhibit their colorful handiwork draped over the railings at Mendenhall’s house or displayed throughout the grounds. Embroiders take over the porch at the Dr. Madison Lindsay House at the opposite end of the parking lot. As usual, several spinners and weavers — many in costume — will be here to demonstrate different types of spinning wheels and other 18th century crafts. Mary Pegg Mendenhall’s large loom nearly fills
a room in the house she shared with her husband and may be seen during tours. Do not miss the High Point Museum tent with interpreters to answer your questions. Several other interpreters and demonstrators will showcase historical trades. Take a visit inside Richard Mendenhall’s house to hear Lucille Clauson speak about her Fuller ancestors’ connections to the Mendenhall family. Mary Beth Jones will present yarn skills in the house. Many other participants will be at Village Fair, perhaps including live animals.
While at the Fair, many of the buildings on the Homeplace property will be open, including Richard Mendenhall’s house, bank barn and Dr. Lindsay’s house and office. The bank barn holds a secret and the Historic Jamestown Society’s most prized possession. The green false-bottom wagon inside is only one of two still in existence used to transport enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad. This is a unique opportunity to learn the story of their escape to freedom and Mendenhall Homeplace is honored to be the caretaker. There is

no proof, however, that the Mendenhall family themselves participated in the Underground Railroad. A replica wagon is available for visitors to try first-hand how cramped the hiding space was. There will be activities for the youngsters and young-at-heart. Allen McCanless will present acoustic music sets and 19th century children’s “party” dance music along with Jack Herrick (of Red Clay Ramblers fame) and Joel Ebel. Food trucks will be on site for lunch and snacks. Admission is free to Village Fair but donations are welcomed. Food items will be available for purchase. In addition to the food, there will also be a charge for any products purchased from vendors. Limited handicap parking is available at the Homeplace. Village Fair is the major annual fundraiser for the Historic Jamestown Society. “Village Fair is more than a day of entertainment,” said Julia Ebel, former HJS president. “It is an opportunity to share glimpses of our local history, early skills and crafts. In turn, we hope the experience nudges visitors to ponder their own experience and heritage — and to wonder about their own ancestors’ lives.”

GTCC welding students craft 6-foot sign for N.C. Folk Festival PRESS RELEASE Since the begging of summer, GTCC welding students have worked together to design and construct a large-scale metal installation spelling FOLK. Each letter is about 6 feet tall by 3 feet wide and weighs about 600 pounds, making the project both a large-scale fabrication challenge and a hands-on learning experience. Over about 100 hours, students applied welding, metalworking, layout and fabrication techniques while learning how to safely construct, move and assemble large, heavy structures. It was not long before the First Baptist congregation was having worship services in the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m while Beyond the Walls Ministries met for Sunday school in the library and moved into the sanctuary at 11:30 for their worship service. “Our mission is to become spiritually empowered within the church walls to make changes beyond the wall,” Webb said. “That is were evangelism begins.” In addition to pastoring his congregation Webb also serves as president of the Ministers Conference of High Point and vicinity, president of Christian Education for the Rowan Baptist Association, a Board member of the Healthy High Point Foundation and a member of the High Point Police Department (HPPD) Advisory Board. When the pastor of First Baptist began to have health problems, Webb stepped up to preach at both the 10:30 and 11:30 services. Before any service begins, however, members of all the congregations enjoy a time to bond over coffee and doughnuts in the fellowship hall. The story of a shared worship facility does not end there. Alan Wilson, a land surveyor and elder at Maplegate Christian Fellowship, met Mary Michael when he came to survey some property the church has behind its buildings. He and Chance Walters, an evangelist with Chance Walters Ministries, began the Maplegate meetings under a tree during COVID. The congregation is currently meeting in a Girl Scout camp but would like

more space. “I attended some meals at First Baptist to learn about the church,” Wilson said. “The friendships here are beautiful.” Michael met Walters “by chance” in the church parking lot. “He guided us on how to get the whole church usable and how we could work together,” Michael said. Profits from Second Chance Closet in Jamestown, which is owned by Walters and his wife Kacie, are used toward a variety of evangelistic endeavors and members of Maplegate partner with different ministries to do service. “Someone helped us, we want to help others,” Walters said. A men’s group sponsored by Maplegate has begun meeting at First Baptist. “Our older members are supportive of the changes being made at First Baptist and are happy to see (God’s) church flourishing within the facility,” Michael said. “We feel like a community church and want to do even more to engage the community.” “We are one church with multiple congregations,” Wynn said. “We cannot afford to follow the artificial models that have been done for years. We are moving forward in a healthy way.” Walters sees unity as the missing link for a great endtime revival. “The answer to a divided nation is a unified church,” he said. The community is invited to join any of the congregations meeting at 306 Guilford Road, as members gather to worship and serve others.

Flavor bases that run the world and rescue dinner 1 bay leaf Large pinch of salt
BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME Nearly every cuisine relies on a traditional combination of aromatic vegetables to create its distinctive foundation of flavor. The French have mirepoix. Many Latin and Caribbean kitchens have sofrito. Across several East Asian cuisines, ginger, garlic and scallions provide the opening notes. These aromatics may not be the stars of the show, but they are indispensable supporting players. Cooked together, they give meals the distinctive flavors we associate with cuisines around the world. The only drawback is that they require chopping precisely when we are hungry, tired and considering cereal for dinner. Why not prepare several batches now and freeze them in meal-size portions? You will create your own homemade convenience foods: little cubes of concentrated flavor ready to jump-start dinner. Make one batch for tonight and one for the freezer. Cool cooked bases promptly, spoon into silicone muffin cups or ice-cube trays and freeze until solid. Transfer to labeled freezer bags, press out excess air and use within three months for optimal quality. There is no need to thaw. Drop a portion directly into a hot pan, soup pot or slow cooker and proceed as though you had just chopped the ingredients. Look at you, starting dinner before you even knew what it was. First, mirepoix traditionally contains approximately two parts onion to one part each carrot and celery. Use it to begin soups, stews, sauces, potpies, casseroles or braised dishes. Here's A Tip BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE'S A TIP • To remove stubborn hard water deposits from a shower head (without removing it), do this trick: Add a cup of plain white vinegar to a zipper-top sandwich bag (or a larger bag with added vinegar to fit larger showerheads). Submerge shower head in the vinegar and draw bag up tightly around the stem. Use a rubber band to secure the plastic bag around the showerhead. Leave overnight. Remove, scrub and shower to release the deposits. • “When moving, use foam plates as separators for your dinner plates. Use kitchen towels to wrap serving platters. If you have a box that separates glasses, drop a spice jar into each glass. Use all the space and you’ll have less boxes to move.” — P.L. in South Carolina • Borax can be used to keep sidewalks free of weeds. Simply sprinkle a little Borax on the sidewalk and sweep into the cracks. This is a very effective weed killer, but it will also kill your grass if you use too much, so keep it in the cracks only! • “Have a stripped screw? Place a wide rubber band over the head and insert your drill. The rubber band fills in the stripped spots and makes the drill catch the screw. It works most of the time.” — D.D. in Nebraska • “Make audio recordings or short videos of you reading your children’s favorite books for them to play when you are busy doing housework, working or cooking.” — K.A. in Oregon • If you have a sticky zipper, try running a candle along the zipper face, then zipping it up and down a few times.
