Main Street Corridor ideas presented BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Many creative suggestions came out of the evening community meetings about the future of Jamestown’s Main Street corridor between Dillon and Guilford roads on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. Three earlier work sessions on Oct. 1 between churches/biped community, first responders/ NCDOT and Main Street businesses also enlightened planners how these stakeholders would be affected by any proposed Main Street changes. People in Jamestown like to walk or cycle in the small town

BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Deep River Friends Meeting in High Point was recently listed as protected by easements managed by Preservation North Carolina. The protection includes the meeting house, cemetery and grounds. According to Preservation North Carolina, an “easement is simply a legal agreement between the property owner and a preservation organization into which the parties enter for the mutual benefits of historic preservation, continued private ownership, and possible tax advantages or other compensation to the owner. The organization takes on the responsibility and legal right to enforce the easement. “Usually a permanent restriction, it is written in deed form and is filed with the county register of deeds, thereafter running with the title to the land and affecting each succeeding owner just as it does the original grantor.” The meeting house and cemetery are on

Deep River Friends Meeting the National Register of Historic Places. Many early Jamestown settlers, including Mendenhalls, Ragsdales and Bundys, are buried in the cemetery. The graves date back to the mid-18th century and many are unmarked. Later graves of non-Quakers are more elaborate. Former Mendenhall Homeplace director Shawn Rogers and a geologist surveyed the northwest portion of the cemetery containing graves of the Black community a few years ago. Over 100 unmarked graves were found. The meeting was founded by Quakers in 1753 and the meeting house was built in
1875, modeled on the Eutaw Street Meeting House in Baltimore, Md. It features a Front Gabled Plan and subtle Italianate details with molded window and door hoods and raking eaves. The meeting house is located at 5300 W. Wendover Ave. at the intersection with Penny Road.
Scout makes drop box for worn American flags BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com Thanks to a local Girl Scout, an old post office box has found new life and new purpose as a drop box for America flags that need to be disposed of properly. A member of Troop 30066 that meets at the Jamestown Public Library, Lacey Shelton had been considering what to do for her Silver Award in Scouting. She began to research how to dispose of flags that were tattered or worn and were no longer appropriate to display. “I had not realized how important it was to dispose of them correctly,” Shelton said. “I learned they are not just to be burned, but should be ripped into stripes and individual pieces of stars before they are place in the fire.” Her research led to the problem of how to collect worn flags before any official flagburning ceremony and, if using a drop box, where it could be placed. At encouragement from her Scout leaders, Shelton,
along with Jamestown Parks and Recreation Director Scott Coakley, talked to members of the Town Council in February to explain her desire to place a flag depository at Wrenn Miller Park. “Mr. Coakley described the project and I answered questions that the councilmembers had,” Shelton said. “The vote was unanimous that I could put a drop box in the park.” Getting permission to place the flag drop box in the park was just the beginning. Shelton then had to come up with a way to collect flags that would keep them dry and safe until each burning ceremony was planned. Her great uncle Mark Aston, an Army and Air Force veteran and retired postal worker, had just the solution – an old postal box that would work perfectly for the project. The lock on the postal box had long been removed, but Shelton’s dad was familiar with lock work and was able to Photo submitted replace a suitable one. Lacey Shelton created a drop box for flags that are too “The box was really dirty,” worn to be properly displayed. The box, located in Wrenn Miller Park will hold flags until a burning ceremony could SEE SCOUT, PAGE 2 be arranged.

Briscoe storms Las Vegas to win South Point 400 BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS On a very hot near 100 plus degree day in Las Vegas, Chase Briscoe was able to hold the field at bay for many, coming away with the trophy after an intense battle with Kyle Larson for the win! This year’s South Point 400 was hot, sold out and ready for action on a very wide racetrack. When the green flag fell, Denny Hamlin led the opening 34 laps as Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace and Ryan Blaney took turns out front. Briscoe took charge on lap 47 and claimed the stage win just in front of Christopher Bell and Blaney. On to the second stage where Bell and Austin Cindric added to the lap leader list as Briscoe swept the stage as well. Cindric was runner-up with Bell third. After Briscoe took the lead for the third and final time on lap 228, the Toyota driver put his head down with no one, including a very pesky Larson to dethrone him from the lead. Wallace and Larson gave the strongest attempts to lead, only to be thwarted by a very strong Briscoe hot rod, and great pit stops, like in the 8-second bracket! At one point on the final lap, Larson let it all hang out just a spec too much, resulting in a fairly hard hit into the outside wall. Before all was said and done, Reddick wound up as part of wounded cars in the incident, yet both cars limped
across the finish line for second and third place honors. Capping the top five finishers included Cindric and Blaney. Briscoe’s latest win was his first in Las Vegas, second of the season and seventh career notch. Looking at the current points standings finds Larson still on top, now by 40 over Hamlin and 55 in front of Bell.

Verstappen wins F1 in Bahrain Max Vertsappen finally won his first race of the season and first win in over a year with a spirited run in his Red Bull Ford powered race car on the always tricky Malaysia road course. The 2024 F1 champion took charge early, easily passing both Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Multi-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton had a rough start from the front row, falling way back to 18th on the first lap. The super talented English driver battled the entire race to claw back to an impressive third place on the podium right behind Antonelli. With five laps remaining, Russell bailed out of his broken Mercedes, sending him to a disappointing 20th place finish. A look at the latest points indicates Antonelli still on top, now by 84 points in front of Russell and Hamilton sits 106 in arrears.
Day battles Kvapil for O’Reilly victory In what will be considered one of the best races of the season, Corey Day battled back and forth with Carson Kvapil over the final dozen laps to come away with his third series win of the season. An intense battle saw race fans on their feet to root their favorite driver on to victory as Jesse Love, Brent Crews and Taylor Gray gave chase to the stripe. The Focused Health 250 started with Day on the pole, giving up the lead early for a handful of laps to Sheldon Creed, before he ran away with the stage win over Sam Mayer and Rajah Caruth. Stage two started badly for Justin Allgaier and Brandon Jones, getting tangled up after Jones spun in the path of a hapless Allgaier Chevy. Neither car was able to continue past lap 56, certainly putting a serious dent in their title hopes. QUIK BITS … The balance of the stage saw Creed lands new ride! Mayer lead for 40 laps and checkO’Reilly Auto Parts Series drivered the stage alongside Day and er Sheldon Creed has finally been Caruth. rewarded for all of his hard work
CONTINUED FROM FRONT Shelton acknowledged. “It had to be cleaned, primed and sprayed with three coats of black paint. I used black so it would blend with the other things in the park, such as the benches and trash cans.” Using designs Shelton had created, Jason Spangler, owner of Budget Printing in Jamestown, crafted vinyl images for the box that explained its purpose. The vinyl stickers are weather resistant and should last five-seven years. On Sept. 29 the drop box was placed in the park, close to the veterans monument without being disruptive, but visible from the sidewalks. Shelton, a ninth grade
On to the final and longest stage where Day led 40 laps before Anthony Alfredo and Jeb Burton led a few laps, but it was always Day with the strongest car and on this day, the best driver to win the race. The latest points standings has Creed on top by 19 over Kvapil and 21 in front of Love.
student at the Early College at Guilford, has been in Girl Scouting since kindergarten. She especially likes the opportunities she has had to interact with people and situations she would not otherwise have experienced. Past projects with her troop included making pillows and beds for the animal shelter and helping with adoption events and restoring gardens at the Piedmont Environmental Center by taking out old plants and putting in new. But the project for her Silver Award was created solely under her leadership. “I spent about 57 hours on it,” Shelton said. “My mom and dad [Jared and Alicia] helped a lot and I appreciate Mr. Coakley and Mr. Spangler for their help also. “I want to have an official ‘unveiling’ of the drop box during the upcoming Veterans Day ceremony at the park. After that the box will be monitored every few months.” A key to the box will be kept in a vault at the Town Hall. “I am using social media and flyers to announce where the box is and how it is to be used,” Shelton said. “I hope that the box will give others the idea to do something similar in their own communities. “My biggest takeaway from my project is seeing how well people network within the community,” she added. Shelton plans to focus on her schoolwork before beginning her Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the highest level obtained in Girl Scouts and is equivalent to the Eagle Award in Boy Scouting. Beyond that, she is considering medicine as a career, possibly becoming a physician assistant or pediatrician. She views Scouting and other clubs and organizations as ways to learn and grow as one prepares for the future.
driving among a very competitive field with a new ride. His current HAAS Automation ride has been a good one, but not nearly as good as Creed’s opportunity to drive for Sam Hunt Racings No. 26 Toyota Supra effective next season. The overall deal is designed for a lengthy term, read championships. The 29-year-old driver has been honing his skills for many years and I believe this situation will take him places he’s been looking for, such as an eventual Cup ride. From Rumorville The biggest buzz here has to be Brad Keselowski’s announcement of leaving the RFK 5-year-old NASCAR Cup team. Kinda came out of nowhere and there aren’t many options for the 42-year-old veteran team owner/driver. Step A, it’s very late in the season with most good opportunities long filled up. Step B, a seasoned driver does not come cheap and most, if any openings involve someone with a much smaller paycheck. So, what are the options, if any? Grumbles through the pits feel Brad’s future could very likely involve a return to Dodge in NASCAR. After all, he’s had a good history with the “fourth” brand from years ago. Stay tuned. That’s it for this week. Next week, look for NASCAR news from Charlotte in the Cup, O’Reilly and Craftsman Truck series. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as IndyCar and/or F1 racing.

The founders understood this nation needed guarantees to pro-
tect vigorous discussions and disagreements, particularly about the government. So, they created the Bill of Rights in 1791, starting with the First Amendment that ensures free speech and a free press. Sustaining a free press isn’t free, nor is it easy. The type of news coverage that helps to change laws and change lives — including exposing problems and wrongdoing in communities that some would prefer to keep hidden — can be difficult, timeconsuming and expensive. It was true 250 years ago, and it’s still true today. Some critics have been predicting the death of newspapers since at least the invention of radio, and those predictions have increased with the creation of television, the internet and social media. Yet, newspapers have persevered, adapted their business models and remained as essential institutions in their communities. In this time of another upheaval of the media business model, newspapers are yet again adapting for the future. Their news is shared not just in print as it was in 1776, but also to millions of readers online and through social media by the news organizations themselves and countless other people. Surveys that cite how many Americans receive news from their “phones” these days don’t consider where those phones get their news and information. Many readers don’t know the origin either. But much of the commentary and sharing of news that is abundant online and in social media can be traced back to the original sources: journalists. As we celebrate National

Newspaper Week during Oct. 4-10, it’s important to reflect on why the founders believed so strongly in the need for a free press to cover this nation without government control, without fear or favor and without undue influence from powerful people. The value of a free press is not simply to protect the press, but to protect democracy. It’s based on the belief that a better-informed citizenry is essential for the United States to not only survive, but to thrive. In today’s crowded media market, where misinformation and disinformation are abundant, it’s crucial that newspapers continue to serve in their role as watchdogs and as trusted sources to inform, inspire, educate and con-
nect the communities they serve. There’s no way to predict how the United States will change and evolve over the next 250 years. But it’s certain we will continue to need a free press and independent journalists to document those changes and provide the important news coverage that is vital for this nation’s future.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule, unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what will actually be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most-negative naysayers in the workplace. Meanwhile, an old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine, but leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving a pesky problem so that it doesn’t reemerge at a later date. Good luck! SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s also a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to conduct research
and uncover compelling facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something that you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.

A pound of beef, a little TVP and dinner to spare BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME
Here’s A Tip BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE’S A TIP
There’s a kindness in opening the freezer at 5:30 and finding that someone has already started dinner. Even better when that someone was you, when you had a skillet out and enough energy to chop an onion. This Tex Mex beef and bean filling is worth making once and doubly worth making twice. It can become burritos tonight, sweet potatoes next week and a pot of chili on a day when the question “What’s for dinner?” feels like a personal attack. The trick in this Tex Mex filling is TVP, or textured vegetable protein. It takes on the flavors of the skillet and adds protein while helping stretch one pound of beef into about 5 cups of filling. My family’s favorite is the filling spooned over baked sweet potatoes with cheese and green onions. The sweet potatoes and savory filling are wonderful together. If you have freezer space, double it and set half aside for future you. I use frozen chopped peppers and onions; one 16-ounce bag is just right when I double the recipe.
Ground beef, with protein-rich TVP and beans, becomes a filling for burritos, casseroles or sweet potatoes. enough to mound on a spoon, about 8 to 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. If it becomes too dry, add a splash of broth or water. 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, chipotle powder or ancho chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 (15-ounce) can black, kidney or pinto beans, drained 1 (10-ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chiles, undrained Salt and pepper, to taste
Heat the broth until steaming. Stir in the TVP and let stand for 5 minutes, or until the broth is absorbed. Set aside. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over SUNDAY SUPPER STARTER: medium heat. Add the onion and peppers TEX MEX BEEF AND BEAN FILLING and cook until softened and beginning to Yield: About 5 cups, enough for turn golden, about 5 minutes. 6 generously filled burritos Add the ground beef and break it into Total Time: 35 mins. small pieces. Cook, stirring occasionally, 1/2 cup beef broth or bouillon until the beef is no longer pink and reaches 160 F. Do not drain. Stir in the tomato 1/2 cup dry TVP (textured vegetable paste and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir protein) in the cumin, chili powder, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon olive oil paprika or chili powder, and oregano. Cook 2 cups mixed onion and bell peppers, for about 30 seconds, until fragrant. chopped Add the rehydrated TVP, beans and 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend) tomatoes with their juices. Simmer, stir2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon ground cumin ring occasionally, until the mixture is thick
TO FREEZE AND REHEAT Divide the filling into portions sized for your household. Refrigerate or freeze within 2 hours of cooking. For best quality, plan to use them within 2 to 3 months. Refrigerated portions should be used within 3 to 4 days. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat in a covered skillet over mediumlow heat, stirring and adding water or broth if needed. You can also reheat a frozen portion in a covered skillet over low heat, stirring as it loosens. Heat the filling throughout to 165 F. That’s enough for six generously filled burritos, but burritos are only the beginning. Spoon it over rice, tuck it into stuffed peppers or turn it into soup, chili or an enchilada casserole. It’s the sort of dinner that makes everyone think we had a plan all along. Because we did.
