Town Council members offer reports CONFIRMED RABIES CASE IN JAMESTOWN Guilford County has confirmed a case of rabies in a raccoon found on Kearns Street in Jamestown on Oct. 8. There are simple steps to take to help protect individuals, families and pets. • Keep rabies vaccinations current for dogs, cats and ferrets age 4 months and older. • Supervise pets when they are outdoors and avoid contact with wildlife. • Never approach or handle wild animals, whether they appear healthy, sick or injured. • Avoid leaving pet food outdoors, as it can attract wildlife. If you or your pet has had contact with a potentially rabid animal, seek appropriate guidance promptly. If a person is bitten, wash the area immediately with soap and water, seek medical attention, and report the bite to Animal Control. If you have questions or concerns, contact Guilford County Animal Services/Rabies Prevention at 336-641-2506 or Animal Control: 336-641-5990. DOCENTS NEEDED Do you love history? If so, the Historic Jamestown Society is looking for new docents at the Mendenhall Homeplace. You do not have to wear a costume unless you want to, nor do you have to be a Jamestown native. Society members will train you to give tours of the buildings at the Homeplace. The site was the home of Richard Mendenhall, grandson of James Mendenhall, for whom the town is named. If you are interested, contact 336-4543819 or stop by the Homeplace at 603 W. Main St., across from City Lake Park. MARY BROWNING PRESERVATION AWARD The 2026 Mary Browning Historic Preservation Award will be presented at the Historic Jamestown Society Annual Meeting Oct. 18 at Jamestown Friends Meeting at 2 p.m. FOOD DRIVE Members of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church will host a food drive Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jamestown Food Lion. Donations will be given to Greensboro Urban Ministry to help those in need. MUSIC AT THE FARM On Oct. 24 a “Music at the Farm” social event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Adams Farm playground. Bring a cooler and lawn chairs to enjoy fun for the whole family. In case of rain, the event will be cancelled. Visitors to Adams Farm should be aware that parking along the parkways is strictly prohibited. No grass parking within Adams Farm is permitted and violators will be ticketed. CORRECTION Lacey Skelton, a Girl Scout who completed her Silver Award in Scouting by creating a box to collect worn flags before they are officially disposed of in a flag-burning ceremony, was incorrectly identified as Lacey Shelton in a story featured in the Oct. 7 issue of the Jamestown News. Email Norma B. Dennis or Carol Brooks to add your even to About Town.
With very little business on the Oct. 6 agenda, the Town Council did not waste time. Mayor Susan Dickenson reported she attended a meeting at the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority. Also attending were the Deep River Riverkeeper and Mary Joan Pugh, who is overseeing the Deep River Trail system of blue and green ways. They met with engineers and received updates. Dickenson has long been a proponent of removing forever chemicals and PFAs and 1.4
dioxane from the water. PTRWA has been piloting several new technologies at Randleman Lake for over a year to try to help resolve this problem. They now have a technology with a Burlington, N.C., company called Invicta that not only removes PFAs from water but can destroy it. “That gives me a lot of hope,” Dickenson said. Manager’s report The Veterans Day Flag Raising Ceremony will be at Wrenn Miller Park Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Town Hall will be closed Veteran’s Day. The Council has provided
direction on the ongoing architectural design plans for the fire station. Town staff, Chief Carson and DR Reynolds met to discuss the most recent revisions to the plans. Carson will keep Council informed about the finalization of the design as things progress. The overgrown right-of-ways along Guilford College Road and Jamestown Parkway have been mowed. NCDOT put Interim Town Manager Katie Weiner in contact with their contractor. [Councilmember Jim Gibson thanked Weiner for getting this done.] Town staff have been actively working to get as much public input as possible for the Main
Street Corridor Study. The feedback that received helps ensure that the final report reflects the vision of residents and community members. The online survey closes on Oct. 15. Visit the Town’s website to take the survey. The final report should be completed by the end of November. Construction of the East Main Street Sidepath project is ongoing. The sidepath should be complete around the end of October. The Town received a complaint about erosion along a sidewalk on Dillon Road. The PubSEE REPORTS, PAGE 6
Self-taught cook Fire Department willingly shares secrets warns residents about fire safety BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com
When Liz White brought a pan of baklava to a bake sale at Vickrey Chapel Church, it made a big impression on those who saw it. “It looked so good, we wanted to learn to make it,” said member Donna Bush. The result was several cooking classes that White held in the church fellowship hall. Participants have made baklava twice, as well as spanaPhoto by Norma B. BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com Fire Prevention Week was last week but residents should still be vigilant about fire safety. The National Fire Protection Association’s theme of the 2026 Fire Prevention Week was “Charge into Fire Safety; Safe Charging is a Superpower.” The theme focused on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. Chief Derek Carson of the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department accepted a resolution from Jamestown Mayor Susan Dickenson in appreciation of all the department does to keep the residents and community safe. PSFD provides dedicated service to protect lives, property and the environment throughfire prevention, education and emergency response in our community.

The resolution stressed that during Fire Prevention Month, all residents of Jamestown are encouraged to take steps to make their homes and families safer by checking smoke alarms, planning and practicing fire escape routes, using manufacturer-approved chargers, charging devices on hard, flat surfaces, and staying informed about fire safety. During Fire Prevention Week, the theme worked to educate the public on safe charging practices and how to reduce the risk of fires involving lithium-ion batteries. These are found SEE FIRE, PAGE 2
Fall Litter Sweep in September was a big success BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com “I want to say thank you [to all volunteers] as you represent our residents,” said Elizabeth Greeson, Jamestown Accounting Technician II and Litter Sweep coordinator. “It’s an opportunity to serve our community, to help make this area beautiful. “We had a wonderful turnout – 38 participants. We had people representing six different groups and were able to address nine different sites, [collecting] 45 bags of trash. It made a huge difference.” Participants began at the Food Lion on West Main Street and collected trash along Main
Street, Penny, Dillon, Guilford, Guilford College, Oakdale and East Fork roads, along with Scientific Street. “We picked up nine bags of trash at one place, Penny Road. The people on Scientific Street picked up eight bags of trash in less than 30 minutes,” Greeson added. Unfortunately, trash was still being thrown out. Some was found on one area that had been cleaned just 15 minutes prior. Groups participating included town residents, Ragsdale High School ROTC, Southwest Women’s Garden Club, Jamestown Civitans, Historic Jamestown Society Board members, Town staff and Town Council members. Greeson said several new

Briscoe controlled Charlotte to win Bank of America 400 BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS
Kyle Larson took the pole and led laps, but once again, it was Chase Briscoe standing tall in victory lane after a thrilling end to a great day of racing. Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney capped the top three spots. The Bank of America 400 started with Larson out front for the first 45 laps as Briscoe took charge out front the first of three times on lap 46. Not long after the action picked up to see Ty Gibbs bring out a caution to send their team down the charts to seven laps down in 34th. Give the green and white stage checkers to Larson with Briscoe and Bell nearby. Stage two wrecks started early (lap 78) when Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Ally Chevy lost control sending the car in an immediate left hand turn straight up the racetrack into a hapless Bubba Wallace into a surprised William Byron. It was a hard hit as evidenced by the cameras on Wallace getting out of the car trying to shake the cobwebs out of his head. All three cars were done and racing resumed with Larson leading the middle of another 50 circuits. Bell came on strong to lead 40 laps, but it was always going to be Larson or Briscoe based on performance. Briscoe hung on to a failing race car to win by a narrow .029 seconds over Bell and Blaney for his second win of the season. The latest points stats shows Larson leading Denny Hamlin by

He taught her brothers to cook because he thought they might go into the family business, but left such duties as washing dishes and “minding the cash register” to White. Nor was helping her mother cook for family an option. But she can still recall the wonderful aromas from both her parents’ kitchens and dreaming of being able to cook like them some day. More driver swaps include Harrison Burton being offered a ride with Peterson Racing in a multi-year deal driving the No. 78 Chevrolet. Lee Pulliam will be Burton’s teammate as the two young drivers attempt to be competitive for 2027 and beyond. From Rumorville It’s looking more and more like Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez and Cole Custer will return to their respective rides with Penske, Spire and Haas Factory Team for next season. Cindric has shown a lot of strength in the recent months, driving for Penske ever since winning the Daytona 500 in 2022. Suarez holds a 15.3 finishing average including his Coke 600 win this past May and looks forward to continuing his prowess in the No. 7 Chevy. Custer was recently added to this re-up list to return to his No. 41 Chevy. That’s it for this week. Next week, as top points battles tighten up, look for NASCAR news from Phoenix in the Cup, O’Reilly and Craftsman Truck divisions. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as Indy and/or F1 racing. If you have questions or comments, contact Russ at racinwithruss@gmail.com
COOK
CONTINUED FROM FRONT did not follow the teacher’s exact instructions. “I married young and realized I did not know how to cook,” White said. “Through the years I tried to duplicate my dad’s recipes, but usually ended up making my own.” White had five children and later divorced and remarried. Unlike her own parents, however, she taught her children to cook and noted they all love good food and are wonderful cooks in their own right. When her son, Todd Morris, asked her to write down her recipes she was hesitant, because they were all in her head. During a beach trip in 2008, she and her husband Ed were stuck inside several days due to a storm and White used the time to type recipes. “It was challenging because I never measured anything,” White said. “I really had to think about the measurements for each
recipe. I called Todd and told him I had 170 recipes but did not know how to transfer them to him.” Todd realized the project deserved more that a simple copy for children and grandchildren and should instead become a book. Having sold commercial printing and photography, White was familiar with what a book entailed. Todd’s wife, Cami, a graphic artist, completed the layout and White catered a party for a photographer in exchange for pictures for the book. “I wanted the pictures to look realistic so when people made the recipes they could tell what it was supposed to look like,” White said. When the cookbook was completed, except for the title, friends and family gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate the kickoff of the book. “People were shouting
‘opa,’ which in Greek is a cheer like saying hurray,” White explained. “My 5-year-old grandson began going around the restaurant shouting ‘opa’ and Todd said, ‘That is the name of the cookbook.’” Steve Lambeth, the owner of ASB Printing Company, which printed the cookbook, submitted it for competition and it won awards for best presentation in photography, printing and design. Todd helped White market the book, using social media and arranging book signings. The cookbook was printed three different times, 10,000 copies each. In addition to selling the book worldwide, White donated many signed copies to various churches and organizations to use as fundraisers. Todd once auctioned her cooking skills off to raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs. “The best gift you can give somebody is something you love dearly,” White said. Although she no longer has copies of her cook-
book, when people request it White sometimes will find older copies online, buys them and mails them to the person asking for one. That is how she ended up with a book she had autographed for a relative who had passed away and another one that contained a thank-you letter for the nice cookbook, which was tucked inside. White’s career path has taken many turns. In addition to working for the printing company, she has catered at the High Point furniture market, for weddings and parties. Not content to simply retire, White prefers to stay busy. In addition to teaching others how to make her favorite recipes, she knits items for babies, teaches a teenager in her neighborhood to knit and works part-time at Jamestown Jewelers. “All my jobs have been learned through hands-on experience,” White said. She is more than willing, however, to share the knowledge she has gleaned through the years with others.
FIRE CONTINUED FROM FRONT in phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and power tools. The NFPA’s safety tips for these batteries are: • use manufacturerapproved charging cables and the adapter that came with the device; • charge devices on hard flat, nonflammable services, never on a bed, couch, pillow or under bedding; • unplug the device when fully charged; • watch for warning signs and immediately stop using, unplug and move outside any battery that smells strange, feels unusu-
ally hot, changes shape/ swells or smokes; and • never throw lithiumion batteries into standard household trash or recycling bins. Battery safety starts before you plug in. Carson said the PSFD will provide and install free smoke alarms to anyone who requests one. Visit psfd.com and click on “contact” to find the phone number of the station nearest you. REPORTS
CONTINUED FROM FRONT The Sheriff’s Department gave a reminder to ensure vehicle doors are locked and not to leave any valuables inside vehicles. Frauds are still a personal concern. Don’t give any personal banking or other info to unknown callers and always verify who you’re speaking with. Reports from Council Jamestown Mayor Susan Dickenson and Councilmember Jim Westmoreland recently attended a legislative summit in WinstonSalem sponsored by the League of Municipalities. “Two important things popped up,” said Westmoreland. “There’s work that needs to be done that’s along with some legislation the General Assembly passed this session to basically require local municipalities, through a component of the sales tax distribution, to help fund what will be the future of SNAP benefits for the state and county. By law, counties are the administrator of all the SNAP components but the bill had a provision in it that effectively required states to start paying more for SNAP benefits effective Oct. 2027. There’s a portion related to an error rate calculation that’s probably going to generate some cost for the state to pay back the federal government. The General Assembly has required in the legislation for cities and counties to help pay that component portion. The League is fighting for us. Cities really don’t have any responsi-
bility for that program yet we’re being asked to pay for it. “The other thing was a continued focus on the General Assembly’s property tax constitutional amendment on the ballot. It has some very succinct language. What it means to local governments is the General Assembly is looking to require themselves to enact laws to set levy limits on local government,” Westmoreland continued. “Local governments are already required to have a balanced budget. I think we are the best suited locally to develop the budget to meet the needs of the community.” He said the amendment has a good chance to be approved. When that happens, the Town will have to be more watchful about what the League was saying about what might happen with the remainder of the General Assembly session. “They may implement some rules we’ll have to respond and react to.” Westmoreland also spoke about the upcoming Guilford County referendum related to local sales and use tax of onefourth of one percent additional sales tax. “There is a listing on the ballot that talks about qualifying municipalities or allowable expenses up to 4% of that distribution, if the referendum passes,” he said. “Unfortunately, Jamestown is not one of the qualifying municipalities. We won’t receive anything. But on the other hand, Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire Department will theoretically be a recipient of some of that additional funding. All the fire districts that are subject to it could receive an additional $5 million. “As we’ve seen with increased costs for the Town and the past two years with the fire department cost and budget increases, there is a need for additional revenue. This could potentially mean is an option for an additional or supplemental revenue source that could assist the fire department in pur-
chasing equipment and providing services. It could help moderate some of the future increases we could see.”
Public Comment Cheryl Harvey was upset that town ordinances are not being followed and asked if there was someone in charge. “Nothing has been done since I’ve been complaining about this for going on three years. On Main Street those two white chairs are still upside down and now they’ve added more junk to it. They can’t mow there because of the junk on the curb. It’s been there for a year. My neighbor has never mowed her yard since she built the little house. Says she’s not going to mow it until Jamestown makes her. It’s snaky.” Harvey offered to take over as the person who makes sure certain ordinances are followed. “Somebody is dropping the ball. Why hasn’t one thing on my list from three years ago been done? They were all legitimate concerns. I’m going to be coming [to all Council meetings] and someone is dropping the ball. It’s wrong. It’s wrong.”
Other business Two large monitors have been installed in the Council Chambers. It is sometimes difficult for community members to see presentations, especially rezoning matters. The appointments of a Planning Board Member and Alternate Member along with appointment of an ETJ Planning Board Member and Alternate Member were postponed until November. The scheduled Closed Session was removed. The Council met two weeks early in October due to early voting, which takes place in the Council Chambers. Councilmember Sarah Glanville was absent.

An autumn dinner without the wait BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME Every autumn, apples get recruited for pies, crisps and cakes, as though their entire purpose is to be a delivery system for cinnamon. Today, we’re giving them a different assignment: dinner. No rolling pin in sight. These skillet pork chops with apples and onion deliver the comforting flavors of fall in about 20 minutes. Naturally, that depends on how quickly you can slice an onion and two apples. We’re making supper, not auditioning for a knife commercial. Tender pork, sweet-tart apples and softened onions make a lovely combination. A splash of vinaigrette pulls everything together into a savory pan sauce, using something you may already have waiting in the refrigerator door. This is exactly the kind of recipe I’ve been collecting for “The Diva Dinner Dash,” my upcoming cookbook of meals ready in 20 minutes or less. It can beat the delivery driver to your dinner table. Depending on the line, it might even beat a trip through the drive-thru. And you get to stay home in your comfy pants. Choose firm apples that will hold their shape during cooking. Granny Smith offers a nice tart contrast; gala and Fuji are other good choices. Buy whichever variety is at the best price. There’s no need to send your grocery budget into a tailspin over two apples. Leave the peels on if you like. Slice the apples and onion thinly so they cook quickly. Thick wedges are good for roasting, but this supper has somewhere to be. For the pork, choose boneless or bone-in loin chops of similar thickness, about 1/2 inch for this quick preparation. Thickness matters more than weight when you’re watching the clock. A thick chop will need additional cooking time, regardless of what the recipe says. Browning the pork first builds flavor. When you add water to the skillet, scrape

Savory skillet pork chops with apples and onion bring autumn flavor to the table in about 20 minutes. up those tasty, browned bits so they become part of the sauce. Then return the chops for a gentle, covered finish. The other shortcut is bottled salad dressing. Italian vinaigrette brings herbs and tang; balsamic vinaigrette gives a sweeter, deeper flavor. Use dressing, not straight vinegar, and shake the bottle before measuring. While the pork rests, prepare instant mashed potatoes or microwave leftover rice, and in about 20 minutes, with thin chops and overlapping prep, dinner is done. Because sometimes the most useful thing a recipe can offer is a quick and easy solution to “You mean they want dinner ... again?” SKILLET PORK CHOPS WITH APPLES AND ONION Yield: 4 servings Total Time: 20 minutes 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 (6-ounce) thin pork loin chops, about 1/2 inch thick 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 2 medium apples, cored and thinly sliced 1/4 cup water
1/4 cup Italian or balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown pork chops for about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate; they will finish cooking later. Increase heat to medium-high. Add onion and saute for 1 minute. Add apples and saute for another minute. Add water, scraping up browned bits. Return chops and any accumulated juices to the skillet. Drizzle with vinaigrette; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until chops reach 145 F and apples and onion are tender. Transfer chops to a clean plate and rest for at least 3 minutes before serving with apples, onion and pan sauce. Here's A Tip BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE'S A TIP • When you make a chicken in the crockpot, use this trick to have it come out moist and delicious: Prepare the bird as normal, rinsing and patting dry, then seasoning. Ball up six to eight wads of aluminum foil. Enough to cover the bottom of the crockpot. Put the bird in breast side up on top of the foil balls. The chicken should not be touching the sides of the pot. Cook on low for 6-8 hours for a succulent dinner! • “To use the last of the peanut butter in a glass jar, simply add your morning oatmeal for a yummy flavored breakfast. Or add sliced bananas and a couple tablespoons of milk for a delicious dessert!” — J.S. in Kansas • To help kids in both becoming responsible for the food choices they make and being a helpful member of the household, encourage them to choose a family meal each week, and to help prep or even cook the meal according to his or her ability. Experts say this is a good opportunity to talk about nutritional choices and the impact of different food-preparation techniques. • “If you purchase sodas or other drinks that are linked together with plastic rings, do the little critters a favor: Cut open the loops with scissors so that there are no rings for animals or sea life to get caught in.” — A.A. in Florida • When you are zesting or juicing oranges, lemons or limes for a recipe, go ahead and do several at a time. Freeze the citrus zest and juice in an ice-cube tray. You can pop out the cubes and use them in recipes later on.
