Planning Board denies church rezoning request By CAROL BROOKS freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com Was it the impassioned comments of neighboring residents or what they called the lack of information by the pastor? Whatever the reason, the Jamestown Planning Board denied Harvest Church’s rezoning request. During the public hearing at the May 12 Board meeting, the church requested

rezoning of approximately 2.18 acres +/- at 4909 Guilford College Road beside the church from Agriculture (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Single-Family Residential (CZ-SFR), which accommodates a church. According to the rezoning application, the church planned expansion of its campus and to use the 1908 Ann Wiley White House on the property for church events. Additional parking was also planned.

The Wiley White House has a landmark designation, but in 2022 the Guilford County Historic Preservation commission voted recommending removal of the historic designation. The Jamestown Planning Department previously had recommended approval of the rezoning application. The church originally planned to ask for rezoning to Conditional ZoningCivic but that request was withdrawn by the applicant

prior to the April 13 Planning Board meeting. One of the main concerns by the residents was the lack of communication from the church regarding the proposed use of the property. Even Planning Board members commented that the request was vague. With this in mind, the May public hearing was continued to June 8 with assurance the church pastor, Joe Coyne, would meet with the neighboring resi-

dents with details. In June, Coyne had added two conditions to the previous application, noting any built-upon area must meet stormwater regulations and the property must meet appropriate development standards. The neighborhood abutting the church property is located off Grandover Parkway on Kacia Court. Many residents there spoke of water runoff from the existing church property

Compiled By Norma B. Dennis Guilford County Schools summer meals returns Guilford County Schools is expanding its summer meal distribution program for children 18 and younger. Meals to-go will now be available for pickup at four locations: Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary, Simkins Elementary, Southern Middle, and Childcare Network Daycare at 1307 E Fairfield Rd, High Point. Families now have the option to pick up a week’s worth of breakfast and lunch at one time. New hours for meals to-go are Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., June 17 to June 24 and July 8-Aug. 12. Registration is required at www.gcsnc.com/ummermeals. “This expanded option helps ensure more children can continue receiving healthy meals throughout the summer,” said Superintendent Dr. Whitney Oakley. According to county date the child food insecurity rate is 22.5 percent. Summer meals provide a critical resource helping children stay healthy. Traditional daily dine-in breakfast and lunch may be attained at the following sites from June 15 to Aug. 13: Elementary schools — Brightwood, Hunter, Sedgefield, Irving Park, Shadybrook, Oak Hill, Pearce. Middle school — Hairston. High schools — Dudley, Eastern, Smith, High Point Central, Ragsdale. Traditional summer meal sites are open Monday-Thursday, 8-9 a.m. for breakfast and 11 a.m.-noon for lunch. Families may choose one meal option per week, either weekly mealsto-go or daily dine-in meals. Meals will not be distributed on June 18, June 29 through July 2, or on Fridays, when district offices are closed.

and were concerned future development would make matters worse. Neither Coyne nor Planning Board Director José Colón could say why storm water regulations were not required when the church was constructed in 2004. “Addressing stormwater, everything we’ve always done has been permitted and gone through each stage of stormwater requirements

For years, anyone wanting a permit from the Town of Jamestown was required to fill out an application at the Town Hall. Now, applicants are able to save the trip and fill out the form with the Town’s new online permitting software, Civic Review. “Civic Review modernizes and streamlines the Town’s permitting process,” said Planning Director José Colón. “It allows residents, contractors and applicants to submit permit applications online, communicate directly with staff through the portal, track application status, receive updates and make online payments when fees are required.” He said the software provides a more user-friendly and convenient experience. “Applicants can submit applications, upload documents, and make payments online without visiting Town Hall,” Colón added. “The system also improves communication between staff and applicants, helping applications move through the review process more efficiently.” With Civic Review, the Planning Department will receive fewer phone calls asking when their permit has been approved. The software accepts building plan files and even revisions. There are several kinds of permits, ranging from Buffer Authorization, Burn Permit, Change of Use, Development Clearance Certificate (DCC), Fence Permit, Group Home and Family Care, Home Occupation, Sign Permit, Soliciting Permit and Zoning Verification Letter. Details of each of these may be found on the Town’s website, Jamestown-nc.gov. Click on “I want to …” to go to the correct page. Additional permit types will be added as the Town continues to expand its use of the platform. Paper applications are still available. Civic Review is a government software subscription service with an annual cost of approximately $6,000.

Starting a new business could be intimidating, but for Howard Williams it is exciting. “I wanted to provide something that Jamestown did not have,” he said. The result is The Manor on Main, located at 206 E. Main St., in the building that once housed the “Jamestown News.” The business is opening in three stages. Phase I is a Farmers Market, which is already open and features organic vegetables every day on the front porch. Williams Photo by Norma B. Third straight win for Hamlin at Pocono By russell sCHmidt raciN' with ruSS NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin is certainly on a tear, winning his third straight race, the latest at Pocono. It marked the Virginia drivers 64th Cup win, fourth of the season and is closing in on points leader Tyler Reddick. The sold-out Pennsylvania venue saw an exciting race under unusual perfect weather conditions. When the green flag dropped to start the Great American Getaway 400, Kyle Larson led the opening 24 laps before Hamlin showed the first power move getting and staying out front to claim stage one honors. Not long into stage two, “the big one” of the day involving nine cars wiped out some very good racecars. Christopher Bell was involved as was Joey Logano, Bubba Wallace and Brad Keselowski among them. Back to green flag action with young John Hunter Nemechek out front until lap 78 when teammate Erik Jones took a turn out front. Todd Gilliland got his Love’s Ford on the map, so to speak, by earning their first stage win in an exciting finish. On to the final stage where several drivers took turns leading a handful of laps until it came around to Hamlin’s turn, leading the balance of laps just in front of Reddick, William Byron, Nemechek and Larson. Hamlin now sits just 19 points back of leader Reddick with Ryan Blaney back in third by 165 points in arrears.

after taking the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series checkers at Pocono on Saturday. The race started with Taylor Gray and Corey Day crashing each other out by the third lap! Back to action watching drivers such as Sam Mayer and Gray mixing it up as several minor multi-car incidents slowed the action down. The first stage was topped by Gray with the second stage checkers going to Brent Crews. (By the way, get used to seeing that name, Crews. The kid is going to be around for a long time with giant advancements coming quickly to a talented young driver.) The balance of this very competitive race saw many of the regulars nipping at Allgaier’s heels, but time after time, Allgaier rose to lead a handful of laps here and there and then led the final seven circuits of the big Long Pond circuit to claim the win. Among the top five finishers included Crews, William Byron, Mayer and Sheldon Creed.

It came with a surprise in the closing few laps of this year’s Spanish GP when the Mercedes failed mechanically sidelining the young driver deep in the pack. The Tifosi Ferrari fans were over the moon! The final race results showed Hamilton over 19 sec ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell, 23 seconds ahead of Lando Norris and an unreal 40 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen at the finish. The market will be held rain or shine from 8 a.m to 3 p.m., unless weather conditions prove unsafe. The third phase for The Manor on Main is the store that will carry new, overstocked, retired and used items at discount prices. The store will start a bit later as Williams continues to get inventory. Each room in the house will feature a set type of merchandise. “The sky is the limit for what you might find,” Williams said. “It is like a restaurant with a seasonal menu. If you see something you like, you need to get it while you can. Once opened, store hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. “The business community has been very welcoming and helpful as we start this new endeavor. rezoning continued from front up until this point,” said Coyne. “We work through Jamestown and Guilford County on all types of ordinances and regulations.” Coyne and several Harvest Church members met with 17 residents of Kacia Court and other neighboring subdivisions on May 28 in an effort to communicate better. “We do care about our community,” Coyne said. “One of the things we wanted to share was what we were doing for our community that they weren’t aware of. We’re trying to be better neighbors. I’m sure it’s my fault. We continued the dialog that began during this first meeting [May 11 including] addressing the major challenge, the drainage and stormwater concerns and supported by and provided by a licensed and civil engineer. “It saddened me just a little bit because we did try to do everything [in the past], talk through any kind of solution that we have been willing to collaborate. We want the best for all parties involved. We did everything we could to have a good meeting and it got to the point where I just had to complete the meeting. I understand there’s hurt involved. I’m doing my best to be a good neighbor and moving forward and trying to be part of the solution.” Harvest Church had an engineering analysis conducted with a civil engineer from McCall Engineering Group who walked through four properties and affected area. He also met with the affected residents privately. The engineer noted that “Kacia Court is lower than Grandover Parkway and that some of the lots along Kacia Court are lower than the ditches along Kacia Court. “It was found that all impervious areas on the 6.97-acre site drains as shown on the approved Jamestown Engineering Plan dated May 5, 2014. “Based on the site visit and topographical information found, the construction of Harvest Church in 2004 and the additional parking in 2015 has reduced the area that is flowing to 4909 Kacia Court by 76

percent. The issues found at 4905, 4909, 4908, 4906 Kacia Court are caused by the installation of a swale and settlement of the swale [at 4909 Kacia Court].” At least one neighbor disagreed with the engineer’s conclusions and indicated he would hire his own civil engineer. Six neighbors spoke during the public comment period of the public hearing. None were in favor. All mentioned the vague planning from the church, the water drainage issue and privacy. But several pointed out they were not against the church. “Pastor, the community doesn’t dislike you,” said Jeffrey Shipman. “That’s a beautiful community and there’s loving people there. It took me a while to adjust because when I first moved there, nobody looked like me. There’s going to be a problem. But there wasn’t. Every Christmas and Thanksgiving they baked something and put it by my door. I talked to the engineer. I’m a contractor. He explained the water is coming down and flooding yards. Please don’t be angry with the neighbors, pastor. It’s a loving community.” “No one questions the church is not out doing good deeds,” said Daniel Burns. Sarah Burns, however, said, “I have never had a good neighbor that had to be told to be a good neighbor by a planning board.” In their discussion, Planning Board members spoke of the lack of definitive plans for the property, the quality of life, possible uses by unpleasant persons, lighting, noise and, most importantly, drainage. When the vote to rezone was over, the Planning Board was unanimous in their vote to deny the application. The rezoning request now goes to the Town Council for a final decision. Harvest Church is located at 4915 Guilford College Road near Business loop I-85 S. Planning Board meetings may be viewed live at www.youtube. com/c/TownofJamestownNC. Chow Down with John Batchelor at Simply Thai By JoHn BatCHelor Simply Thai has two locations — in Elon, which opened in 2009, and in Jamestown, which opened in 2017. I visited the Jamestown property. The interior is fairly small, the waitstaff especially friendly and welcoming, yielding a familiar feel even on first impression. The website shows photos of the owners and provides first names, along with a bit of background. Their mother owned and operated the equivalent of a food truck in California. (I received no response to calls and messages when I attempted to gather more information.) The Appetizer Sampler is a great way to get acquainted here. It provides three portions each of Shrimp in a Blanket, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Dumplings, Money Bags, and Crispy Tofu. (Given our party of four, an accommodating server and kitchen added another portion for a small charge.) The shrimp, spring rolls, dumplings, and tofu are delightfully crisp and clean-tasting (no grease). Money Bags are fried purses containing ground pork — especially tasty. Three sauces lend color as well as enhanced flavor. You assemble Lettuce Wraps yourself, at the table. Peel away single leaves from a half head of chilled iceberg lettuce, then spoon in ground chicken. These are delicious! Companion Courtney ordered from the sushi menu on our first visit. The Tiger Uppercut Roll encloses tempura shrimp, cucumbers, crab salad, avocado, and smoked salmon, decorated with tempura crunch, laced with spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce. It’s another clear winner. I especially liked the texture provided by the tempura treatment. Pineapple Chicken surrounds fried chicken breast with sweet pineapple chunks and a sauce made by simmering the pineapple and juices. It’s both sweet and tangy at the same time. Sliced zucchini and broccoli frame the presentation in green. I got adventurous by ordering Pompano. This is one of my favorite fish, seldom seen on Triad menus. In this preparation, you get a whole fish, pan-roasted, yielding puffy-white flesh and pure flavor, decorated with thin spring onion slices, further enhanced with lemongrass, Thai herbs, and garlic chili sauce. Al dente broccoli, green beans, snow peas, carrot slices, zucchini,

and bok choy complete the presentation. This requires a bit of effort and precision to extract the flesh from the bones, but it’s worth the difficulty. My wife ordered Salmon prepared with ginger, bell peppers, and onions, sharpened with garlic chili sauce. The fish is ladled with a brown ginger sauce. It’s tender and fluffy in texture, simple and fresh in flavor, rendered more complex through the sauce. The same elaborate vegetable assembly is included, along with rice, in both cases. My personal preference is brown rice, for the nutty flavor as well as the nutrition. White and fried are also available. Chiang Mai Beef is stir-fried, caramelized, with onions. That’s very well done, which suits these thin strips well. They emerge with rich flavor from the treatment, a little on the firm side. Stir-fried green beans show dark streaks from the heat. They’re great. The kitchen might consider offering them as a starter by themselves. I love the aroma and flavor of fresh basil, especially Thai basil. This kitchen combines strips of basil with sliced, vibrantly colored red, green, and yellow bell peppers, sautéed onion strips, and Thai spices. Our

party tried this preparation with tofu for a vegetarian entree. Bite-sized chunks are lightly fried, producing a mild, crisp result. Pad Thai is constructed from Thai noodles, stir-fried with egg and green onions, combined with tangy tamarind sauce and ground peanuts. The flavors are wonderful with no other additions, but you can add tofu, chicken, pork, steak, duck, shrimp, or with mixed seafoods. We chose the latter and found mostly shrimp and mussels, plus some calamari and a few tofu chunks. A bit of sliced carrot and red cabbage primarily lends color. Other noodle dishes, as well as curries, offer the same additional proteins. Our server recommended duck with Panang Curry. She said she serves a lot of duck to many regular customers. The host broth is based on coconut milk, plus peanut sauce and onions, plus zucchini, carrot slices, and sweet peas. I found the duck flavor pleasant enough, but with more gristle and fat than I would prefer, in pretty firm meat. I loved the curry flavor, though. I just think I’ll get pork next time. We tried one dessert — Fried Ice Cream. The kitchen slices pound cake — different

flavors on different occasions, all made inhouse — then wraps it around an ice cream center and deep fries the assembly, finally lacing it with chocolate sauce at serving. Flavor and texture are great, although letting it sit awhile for the ice cream to soften will improve the overall effect when I get it again. And there will be more visits here. Simply Thai is going to be my go-to place on Wednesday nights (half price wine)!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A change of season reinvigorates the Lamb, helping to overcome the effects of a recent slower-paced period. This is a good time to restate your feelings for a certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might not like using your authority to correct a workplace situation, but this is what being in charge is all about. Besides, you have people ready to lend support if need be. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your creativity continues to run high and helps guide you to make some fine choices in the work that you’re doing. Keep the weekend free for the special people in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be surprised if you experience a sudden spurt of energy that is strong enough to pull you out of a recent period of indecision and put you back in charge of your own goals. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time for LEOs and LEOnas to set new goals

regarding health, educational choices, and possible career moves. The plans you make now could be a blueprint for your future. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might have much to offer to a potential employer, but it can all be overwhelmed by too many details. Let the facts about you speak for themselves without any embellishments. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to balance your responsibilities to your work-a-day world with your obligations to the people who are in your private life. Expect news that could lead to a change in plans. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing attitude on the part of a once-determined adversary could cause changes down the line. Be prepared to take advantage of an unexpected new opportunity! SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’d be a truly wise SAGITTARIUS to be skeptical about an offer that doesn’t answer all your

questions. Even a colleague’s testimonial doesn’t replace facts that aren’t there. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good idea to avoid spending money on unnecessary purchases this week in order to keep a reserve against a possible upcoming (but fortunately temporary) shortfall. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) More information is what you should demand regarding a workplace situation that recently came to light. Don’t be surprised at who might turn up as one of your supporters. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still be in a “treading water” mode, but by midweek, a shift in your aspect favors taking a more active role in pushing for the changes that you feel are necessary. Good luck! BORN THIS WEEK: You exude a warm, caring attitude that comforts everyone who comes into your life. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.

Couch Theatre by Demi Taveras “How to Make a Killing” (R) — Glen Powell (“The Running Man”) leads this black-comedy thriller that also stars Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”), Topher Grace (“Flight Risk”), and Ed Harris (“Love Lies Bleeding”). It follows Becket Redfellow (Powell), who was born to an affluent family but was shunned due to his mother being a teenager when she had him. Stuck on the idea that he still deserves the life that his family has, Becket learns that he’s still in line for the family fortune due to a loophole. So, he nefariously decides to

murder the remaining living Redfellows so that he can claim the $28 billion jackpot. The film barely made up its budget in theaters and didn’t generate much buzz from audiences, which could be because it leans into “American Psycho” territory without the actual allure of the film. Premieres June 19. (HBO Max) “Voicemails for Isabelle” (PG-13) — Netflix refuses to slow down on its genre of rom-coms. How are we supposed to keep up with the films that they keep cranking out when they all have the same poster, vibe, and type of actors? No offense to Zoey Deutch

that Wes (Robinson), a real estate agent from across the country, was assigned Isabelle’s old number, and he’s been listening to every confession Jill’s been making. Premieres June 19. (Netflix)

Under the Nuremberg Laws, a person’s classification depended largely on the religious affiliation of parents and grandparents, so conversion to Christianity usually did not exempt someone of Jewish ancestry from anti-Jewish persecution. • Turtles can see well underwater, but on land they are nearsighted. • In one of his occasional efforts to improve public relations, Chicago gangster Al Capone opened a soup kitchen during the Great Depression. • During the pre-WWII drafts, an illiterate gentleman hoping to avoid military service asked his wife to write the draft board and explain how much he was needed at home. In Case You Missed It “Love Island USA: Season 8” (TV-MA) — It’s almost unbelievable to think that it’s already been a year since the hot mess that was season 7 of “Love Island USA.” This time around, we’ve got a new batch of (somewhat) normal contestants, as opposed to the influencer-heavy group we had last year. For example, Beatriz Hatz from

San Diego, California, is a Paralympic athlete looking to find a man who matches her spiciness. Of course, there are a handful of models, and digital creator Zach Georgiou is the brother of Charlie from last season. (Hopefully, he has better luck!) But overall, “Love Island USA” is back to its usual fashion of stirring up crazy amounts of drama with regular folks like the ones who are watching at home. Almost a dozen episodes are out now to watch, but you’ll have to catch up quickly so that you don’t miss out on the finale! (Peacock)

Give pork chops the steakhouse treatment for Father’s Day By patti diamond divas on a dime Father’s Day meals don’t have to be elaborate to feel special. Sometimes all it takes is setting aside a little extra time and serving something that says, “I thought you’d enjoy this.” Many Father’s Day menus revolve around steaks, burgers and the backyard grill. This year let’s give the humble pork chop the star treatment. Stuffed with apples and onions and finished with herbs and Dijon mustard, they deliver steakhouse flavor without the steakhouse price tag. One of the things I love about cooking is its ability to turn ordinary ingredients into something extraordinary. A celebration doesn’t come from the price tag attached to the meal. It comes from the thought behind it. Whether it’s Father’s Day, a birthday or simply a Tuesday when everyone is home at the same time, a little extra effort can make dinner feel like an occasion.

Here's A Tip By JoAnn derson now here's a tip • “The best way to get a bloodstain out of clothing is by dousing the stain with hydrogen peroxide and washing as usual. For clay stains, you absolutely must have a Fels-Naptha bar. It looks like a bar of soap, and you wet the material and rub in the soap. It’s magical. This, coming from a softball mom whose daughter loves to slide.” — A.A. in Florida • Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda.

Stuffed with apples, onions and herbs, these juicy pork chops bring steakhouse flavor to the table. 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary or 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, plus more to taste Toothpicks to secure the stuffing

APPLE & HERB STUFFED PORK CHOPS Yield: 4 Servings Total Time: 50 mins. 4 thick-cut pork chops with bone if possible, about 1 1/2 inch thick 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more as needed 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus more to taste 1 tablespoon butter, or more olive oil 1 apple, Granny Smith or similar, cored and thinly sliced 1 medium sweet onion, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Using a small sharp knife, cut a deep pocket into the side of each pork chop, being careful not to cut all the way through. Season the chops inside and out with salt. Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and brown the pork chops on both sides, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. If the chops have a fat cap, briefly brown it as well. Transfer to a plate. The centers will still be undercooked.

Add the butter to the skillet. Cook the onion for 2 to 3 minutes until softened. Add the apple and cook until tender. Stir in the vinegar, then add the panko breadcrumbs and cook for 1 minute more. Remove from the heat. In a small bowl, combine the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary and pepper. Spread the mixture over the pork chops and inside the pockets. Fill each pocket generously with the apple mixture and secure with toothpicks if needed. Arrange any remaining apple and onion mixture in the center of the skillet and place the pork chops on top. Cover and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pork reaches 145 F in the thickest part. Let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Make It Simpler Don’t feel like stuffing pork

chops? No problem! This recipe is just as delicious served without the extra step. Simply skip cutting the pockets and reserve the apple-onion mixture. Before baking, spread the apples and onions into an even layer in the skillet and place the seasoned pork chops on top. Roast as directed until the pork reaches 145 F. You’ll get all the same sweet-savory flavor with a little less fuss. Serve with mashed potatoes, sauteed green beans and a simple green salad for a complete meal. Then bring out dessert. Life offers plenty of reasons to skip dessert. Father’s Day isn’t one of them. • It’s easy to make your own spreadable butter. Simply whip 1 pound of softened butter and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Slowly add 1 cup of olive oil. Beat up to 5 minutes to add air and increase volume. Pour into two 1-pint containers and refrigerate. It’s economical, spreads like soft margarine, tastes great and you get the benefits of olive oil in a natural product. • “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. Then, we use the cubes in our travel cups. It keeps the lemonade cool, and as it melts (which tends to be quickly), it doesn’t water down the drink.” — K.H. in South Carolina • To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When it is mostly dry, pop it in the dryer to fluff. • “Always be on the lookout for sale items that can be given as gifts.
