Town Council has a busy evening
The Jamestown Town Council meeting on July 21 lasted just over four hours, full of important business to discuss or adopt. Strategic Plan update The Council was expected to adopt the Town’s updated Strategic plan at its July 21 meeting. However, staff learned the Council would like to revisit portions of the plan prior to adoption. It had been tabled at the June 23 meeting. The Council will meet Aug. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. to have a dialogue with key staff members regarding suggested changes. Oakdale Sidewalk Project Town Manager Matthew Johnson explained why the Oakdale
Road sidewalk project has been delayed. “It’s been on the books a long time, Johnson said. “It’s been delayed a bit and a good portion of that time was at the request of NCDOT who wanted to complete the [Jamestown] bypass project first. Since then, staffing, engineering and funding challenges have continued to plague the project. “The most significant issue is the large increase in costs for the project over the amount of funding from the Congestion, Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant, which was initially $700,000. Some of those funds have been used for engineering. “The Town is at a crossroads. If the project is scrapped, NCDOT has indicated that they would not require reimbursement for funds spent to date. If we decide to move forward, the costs will far out-
Compiled By Carol Brooks Riverdale Drive closed for four weeks N. C. Department of Transportation crews temporarily closed Riverdale Drive near Furniture Avenue in southern Guilford County earlier this week. The road will be closed for four weeks in both directions while crews replace a large underground crossline pipe. Detour signs will be posted during the detour. The suggested detour route is to take northbound Interstate 85 Business Loop on Riverdale Drive, then turn right onto Business I-85 for 1.3 miles. Take the ramp toward Vickrey Chapel Road for 0.2 miles, turn right onto Vickrey Chapel Road for 1.3 miles, then turn right onto Kivett Drive for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Riverdale Drive. Music in the Park and National Night Out Jamestown’s Music in the Park, which usually is on Friday nights, will take place instead on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. to coordinate with National Night Out. The featured band is The Olsons, formerly AM rOdeO. Jamestown Rotary Club members will be onsite collecting school supplies, canned food and backpacks for Jamestown schools. Wrenn Farm outparcel sold A site plan application for Wrenn Farm Dental Office at 1410 Greensboro Road in front of the Wrenn Farm Village residential community has been submitted to the City of High Point. The location is just outside the Jamestown Town Limit and across from Pennybyrn. This vacant, 1-acre outparcel was purchased in May by Sabre Holdings LLC, which is co-managed by Dr. Preston Ford, a High Point dentist. The purchase price was $485,000, and the seller was Jemsite Development of Ashe County, the original developer of Wrenn Farm Village. Have an event that you think needs to be included in About Town? weigh the available grant funding,” Johnson added. “The revised cost estimates below for the Oakdale Road sidewalk are based on recent project costs. Funds needed are $1,140,000. “In discussions with Council members, Councilmember Jim Westmoreland indicated that he would be willing to have this discussion with the High Point Metropolitan Planning Organization (HPMPO) and NC DOT to see if additional funding would be available. We wanted to bring this to the attention of the Council and the public. “CMAQ is typically funded with 20 percent local match and 80 percent from NCDOT that’s federal funding,” Westmoreland said. “Right now we have a gap that will, hopefully, need to be filled by the DOT with additional CMAQ funding. “I’m being cautiously
Personnel Policy amendment The Council approved an amendment to the Town’s Personnel Policy to to accept prior service with a previous employer who participates in the state retirement system when calculating vacation leave accruals. “[Councilmember Sarah Glanville] identified one of the challenges sometimes for employees coming from other jurisdictions that participate in the state or local retirement system is that they

Burgess also presented a resolution honoring Charles Clapp, Jr., on the Parks and Recreation Committee. Clapp has served on the committee since being an alternate in 2018. There are several reasons people might need to go to a laundromat — they cannot afford a washer and dryer, their home is too small to accommodate the appliances, or the ones they own might be temporarily broken. Two public hearings brought a larger-than-normal audience to the July 21 Jamestown Town Council meeting. The Council considered the rezoning of property located at 4909 Guilford College Road beside the church from Agriculture (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Single-Family Residential (CZ-SFR), which accommodates a church. According to the rezoning application, the church planned expansion of its campus and to use the 1908 Ann Wiley White House on the property for church events. Additional parking was also planned. While Town staff approved the rezoning, the Planning Board voted down the request June 8. Pastor Joe Coyne spoke in defense of the rezoning and invited several others to speak. Glenn Laivins is the current owner of the property. He said he had made a mistake at the Planning Board meeting. “I’m the one that approached the church,” Laivins said. “No one from the church has asked me to sell. The house is more than we can handle and the church has been phenomenal neighbors. All our neighbors have been wonderful.” “If you look at agricultural use as defined in the LDO, there are many things that can be done on this property that I’m not sure the neighbors are aware of,” said Keith French, a member of the church’s executive team. “Under that zoning, you could have cattle, poultry, chickens, roostsee rezoning, page 3

It’s almost here, the premier sporting event in the Triad. The 87th annual Wyndham Championship will be held Aug. 6-9 at Sedgefield Country Club, which is celebrating 100 years. Defending champion Cameron Young has indicated he will return to defend his title. The 2025 Wyndham was Young’s first victory on the PGA Tour but it was a stepping stone for 2026. Since last year, the Wake Forest grad has moved to No. 3 in the world and third on the FedEX Cup points list. He is also a contender for the PGA Tour’s player of the year. ‘Heim Time’ Brickyard Linda Fay winner at Indy Sheffield Haithcock Obituaries
Linda Fay Sheffield Haithcock, 80, of High Point, North Carolina, passed away on July 21, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Linda was born in High Point, North Carolina, to Cora Alice Johnson and Elsie Van Sheffield on Feb. 2, 1946. She graduated from Allen Jay High School in 1964, a class and school community that held a special place in her heart throughout her life. Linda married Gary Haithcock on Oct. 2, 1965. They shared 52 wonderful years together until his passing in 2017. She began her career at High Point Hospital in 1964, where she worked until 1974. During her time there, Linda was part of an important moment in the hospital’s history when she helped admit the first African American patient into an all-white ward. She later worked with the Urology Clinic alongside Drs. Brooks, Rowe, and Akers from 1974 to 1976. Linda continued her career with the family business, as co-owner of the Cloverleaf Supermarkets, until 2001. She later worked with Guilford County Mental Health in Greensboro and High Point before returning to High Point Hospital in Outpatient Behavioral Health, where she worked until her retirement. Linda was a faithful member of Archdale United Methodist Church and the George Elder Sunday School Class. She loved gardening and her flowers. She also loved traveling and, throughout her lifetime, had the opportunity to travel all over the world. The loves of her life were her two daughters, Kim and Kristy, who meant everything to her. Every breath she ever took and every word she ever spoke was love for them. Linda is survived by her daughters, Kim Haithcock Lester and husband Mike, and Kristy Haithcock Schrock and husband Jon; her grandchildren, Tyler Mastrogianakis and wife Torie, Ryan Lester, and Dylan Lester; her twin sister, Brenda Kay Sheffield Mann and husband Jeff; and the second love of her life, Ted Fallenstein, who brought companionship, joy, and love into her later years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Haithcock; her parents, Cora Alice Johnson and Elsie Van Sheffield; her brothers, Elsie Van Sheffield Jr. and Allen Clay Sheffield; and her sister, Dorothy May Sheffield Bodenheimer. Linda was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished Mimi, and caring aunt, cousin, and friend. The depth of this loss cannot be fully expressed, and her absence will be felt for years to come. Please keep our family in your prayers as we mourn the loss of our anchor and brightest light after 80 joy-filled years. Kim and Kristy have lost a mother whose love knew no bounds, and Tyler, Ryan, and Dylan will forever miss their beloved Mimi, whose love and care meant so much to them. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Cindy, Brianna, Nicole, and Debbie for the extraordinary care, compassion, and support they provided to Linda while allowing her to remain surrounded by the love of her family. Their kindness and dedication meant so much during this time. She will be remembered for her compassion, strength, dedication to others, love for her family, and the countless lives she touched throughout her life. Goodbye our sweet Mimi, it is time for you to garden again without the aches and struggles of this earthly life. May you forever enjoy the flowers of heaven as you rejoin those who have been lost before you. We love you Mama! Funeral services will be held at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 1 p.m. with Reverend Roger Carmichael officiating. Burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cumby Family Funeral Service.

Part-time NASCAR Cup driver Corey Heim won this year’s Brickyard 400 with a powerful Toyota Camry and strong pit crew work throughout the 400mile event. The 24-year-old 23XI Racing driver in only his 15th Cup series race drove like a seasoned veteran by hardly putting a wheel wrong for the entire race. The big race started under good weather conditions with less than half a crowd watching pole sitter Carson Hocevar lead the first 31 laps in front of Daniel Suarez and Denny Hamlin. Lap 46 action saw the first wreck of the day, a nasty shot into the outside wall after a left rear tire let go on Kyle Larson’s Chevy. Larson was okay, yet the car was done for the race. Ty Gibbs led a bunch of laps including the final one in the first stage to grab the green and white checkered flag. The second stage saw Ross Chastain run very well in his Busch Light Chevy winning the stage in front of Todd Gilliland and Gibbs. Yes, the big wreck of the night was yet to come. Lap 121 saw a large group of cars bounce off each other after John Hunter Nemechek tapped Ryan Blaney into the outside fence resulting in a massive wad of carnage. The nine-car incident involved but not limited to the likes of Connor Zilisch, AJ Allmendinger and Gilliland. The final and longest stage found Gibbs, Chastain, Christopher Bell and Heim among the fastest. Bell closed in ever so slowly over the final 20-30 laps coming up oh, so short of the pass for the win. Heim held on with worn tires to Bell’s potent Toyota to win his second Cup race in a few weeks after winning the street course at Naval Base Coronado. Crossing the finish line next was a very close Bell, Joey Logano, Chase Briscoe and Hamlin. The latest points stats has Hamlin still on top, now by 84 over Tyler Reddick and 120 in front of Blaney. Kvapil rallies to win Pennzoil 250 at Indy Carson Kvapil finally won his first O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Indy after five runner-ups. The whole team was quite emotional about the whole

thing as races are harder and harder to conquer. The Pennzoil 250 started with pole sitter Sheldon Creed leading the pack into the first turn with Jeremy Clements, Kvapil and Ross Chastain in hot pursuit. Clements took the stage win as Chastain and Kvapil gave chase. Chastain led three times for 31 laps, including a stage 2 win with Creed and Justin Allgaier in the neighborhood. The balance of this race saw Chastain and Kvapil top dogs with Allgaier giving chase right to the end of the race, seemingly chasing Kvapil’s Chevy right to the finish line. Capping the top five included an exciting runner-up for Allgaier. Chastain, Chase Elliott and William Sawalich. The top four were all part of the same JR Motorsports group for the first time in history. The latest points info has Allgaier a whopping 240 ahead of Jesse Love and 270 in front of Creed. Riggs top truck race at IRP Layne Riggs stood tall in the winner’s circle for the fifth time this season after dominating the TSport 200 on Friday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. The Front Row Motorsports Ford driver seemed to make easy work of leading all but two of the scheduled 200 laps! When the green flag dropped, Riggs took off to lead the opening 71 laps. On the ensuing restart, Riggs had a rare mis-shift allowing teammate Chandler Smith to slide on by for a few quick laps before Riggs re-grabbed the point for good. The only major action in this one occurred on lap 136 when a turn three incident between Daniel Hemric, Cole Butcher and Landen Lewis called for a 7-minute red flag to clean things up. Once back to action, leaders Riggs, Connor Mosack, Ty Majeski, Smith and Nick Sanchez wrapped up the top five finishers. Craftsman Truck Series points at this juncture has Riggs out front by 100 over Kaden Honeycutt with teammate Smith in the rear view mirror by 153 points. Mini truckin’ Mini Tyrrell was part of the Craftsman Truck race at IRP. Young Tyrrell started the weekend off with an impressive 10th place in practice. Qualifying was another matter with all five Ram entries struggling to find grip and speed. They all started deep in the pack and they all finished two or more laps down to the leaders well into the 20s. Tyrrell started 28th and recorded a 27th place finish yet maintained a 19th place points position. Norris wows F1 crowd in Hungary After F1 qualifying in Hungary, several drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli were penalized moving them several spots back. Lando Norris took his first pole of the season followed by Fer-
rari driver Charles Leclerc and Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Hammy and the kid were relegated to start P5 and P7. The race started with Norris being passed by Piastri with Max Verstappen running third. With 14 laps remaining in the race, Piastri dropped out with gearbox issues putting Norris back out front to claim his first win of the season. Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari ran well, around third, but was penalized five seconds at the end sending him to fifth overall behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Young Antonelli was credited with a podium finish in third in his Mercedes. The latest points stats still has Antonelli on top, now by 50 over Hamilton and 59 ahead of George Russell. QUIK BITS…Thunder Returning More news from the entertainment side of auto racing including promotions finds the sequel to the 1990 hot movie, “Days of Thunder” on target to start production early next year. Yes, Tom Cruise is connected, but don’t expect a 60-something year old retired driver to return to action to save the day. New cast members are being put together and I’d expect footage from the next Daytona 500 to be part of the much-anticipated release. From Rumorville Top of the charts here has to be the announcement of Hendrick driver Alex Bowman retiring after the 2027 season. The 33-yearold driver has done a very good job for Hendrick, but several serious wrecks have rattled Bowman’s bones a bit and the word is his body is saying get out. I feel it’s the right time and smart enough to leave before any serious permanent injuries occur. In regards to the status of driver Noah Gragson, my research is coming up with conflicting reports. Team Front Row says they like the idea of Noah returning while other sources cite his lack of on-track performance (2026 – Wins 0, Top 10s 0, Poles 0, Fast Laps 0, Points Position 31st) indicates they’re ready for a change. That change could come in the form of star truck driver Layne Riggs. Yes, he’d be skipping over O’Reilly Series for now, but Riggs recent outstanding results indicates he is more than ready. I totally concur and surely fits better than a lackluster Gragson. Word on the street has retired NASCAR Cup driver Elliott Sadler ready to climb aboard the guest Ram No. 25 truck ride at Richmond. That’s it for this week. Look for NASCAR news from around the country while many series are in a summer break, the news continues with silly season in full swing. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as Indy and F1 racing.

continued from front ered around Councilmember Jim Westmoreland as he read a resolution extending sincere appreciation to Gov. Josh Stein, Sen. Phil Berger and Rep. Alan Branson for supporting the Town’s Fire Station Project by including $350,000 in the State budget to assist with facility improvements. The proclamation and resolutions may be found in the July 21 Town Council packet at https://jamestown-nc.gov. Manager’s report Johnson said the America’s250 Celebration on July 3 “was a hit,” even with the high temperatures. He thanked Councilmember Burgess for organizing the event. Insurance covered the damage from the recent fire at Jamestown Park that damaged the new playground. The Town is proceeding to make the repairs. “The Main Street waterline project has been under review with NCDOT,” Johnson said. “Just after 5 p.m. today we received information they had finished their review of the traffic control protocols. Now we’ll schedule a meeting with business and property owners along the route to share info and answer questions. [DOT] had some minor comments they wanted us to address. Paul [Blanchard, Public Services Director] is working on getting those back to them this
week. Hopefully we will get the notice to proceed on that project very soon. “Chief Carson [of Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire Department] asked me to give an update [about the fire station]. Architects have completed their site review and their recommendation is that the most expeditious and most cost-effective path forward is to demolish the current station and rebuild on the existing site. The existing station no longer meets the department’s operational needs and there could be some exposure for personnel to contaminants, just due to the way it’s designed. The new facility will incorporate updated technology to reduce firefighter and EMS exposure risks. PSFD and the Town are currently working with the architects to refine the needs and design directions.” Johnson also reported on the cost recovery for inspections and plan review for D.R.Horton’s current projects. “We generally are recovering a substantial share of the direct review and inspection cost with plan review fees slightly above cost and inspection fees recovering most, but not all, of the associated cost,” Johnson said. “Under N.C. law, development review permit and inspection are meant to be cost-recovery mechanisms and not revenue generators. This is not something for us to ‘make money on.’”
Christmas Parade As expected, the Town Council unanimously approved a special event permit for the annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 6 presented by the Jamestown Rotary Club. The Club requested the Town waive Town fees associated with the event and the associated sign permit for a Town Hall banner promoting the parade; reimburse the Club for Guilford County Sheriffs Office traffic control deputies; provide non-profit funding for four portable toilets (including one ADA-accessible unit) to supplement Civic Center restrooms; cover postage for parade entry mailings, provide trash removal following the event, and have Public Services install cones and barricades along the route map. These requests are typical of the parade requests each year. Consent agenda Items that generally do not need discussion are grouped together in the consent agenda. The Council appproved the first amendment to the Statement of Agreement regarding the Consolidated Municipal Alcohol and Beverage Control System in Jamestown and High Point. This revises the method of calculating Jamestown’s annual profit distribution. The current dis-

continued from front Responders of the Triad and appropriately will be held Sept. 11, 25 years after enemy planes hit the World Trade Center twin towers in New York. Robin Daly, chair for the event, contacted First Responder Patrick Donnelly to coordinate the tournament with him. A moment of silence will be held at the time a plane hit the first tower, after which a representative of Chicken Salad Chick, the tournament’s presenting sponsor, will present a check to First Responders of the Triad. “We’re deeply grateful to the ladies golf association for choosing First Responders of the Triad as this year’s beneficiary,” Donnelly said. “Support like this makes a real difference — it allows us to continue honoring and assisting the men and women who run toward danger to keep our community safe. Partnerships with groups like this one are what make our work possible, and we’re honored to have them standing behind us.” “We’re excited about the positive response we have gotten in order to conduct this tournament,” said JPLGA member Anne Prevo. “It has become a community effort,” Chris Sullivan added. The JPLGA is one of the largest and most active women’s non-profit amateur golf leagues in the Triad. It has 55 members with an average of 30 playing from week to week. Prevo is responsible for pairing players for the day so no one is always playing with the same people. “When I do this I am not sure if the players have anything in common, but they all get along great,” Prevo said. Although most members live locally, some drive as much as an hour to play with other JPLGA members. The reasons for playing golf in general are varied. “I have owned golf clubs for many years, but really started playing when I retired,” said JPLGA President Tami Eade. “I came to play as a guest of a member and ended up joining the group. This is my second year as a full-time member and I am in my second year as president.” Prevo started playing with her husband who is an avid golfer. “He had to push me out of the nest to play with him,” she said. “He also encouraged me to play with the women and I joined that
group in 2012.” Each member no doubt has her own memories of starting to play golf and joining JPLGA. Sullivan, perhaps, has one of the most unique. “I have a start-stop relationship with the game,” she said. “I worked with a cable company that was male-dominated and they all played golf. I figured I needed to learn to play and got hooked on it. Then, I met a man who was a golfer and our first date was playing golf. We married two years later on a golf course.” Sullivan stopped playing for a while, but after moving to the Jamestown area her husband could no longer play. She did not know anyone and decided to call Jamestown Park about its golf course. Marcy Newton, head golf professional who once played on the PLGA tour, connected her to Prevo. “Marcy is very supportive of ladies golf at Jamestown Park,” Sullivan said. “I came and started playing with a bunch of ladies I did not know and they quickly became friends.” Since JPLGA was first organized some members have dropped out or aged out. When the group started in 2000, most were retired. The group dissolved for a time before beginning once more and today members range from working women to a 90-year-old. “We have trouble keeping up with her,” Sullivan said laughing. Besides a love for the game and friendships formed, being outside in nature is also a plus to the activity. The course is filled with deer, which usually can be seen on any given week. “Being in nature is nurturing and relaxing from life’s stress,” Sullivan said. “Jamestown is a beautiful setting and beautiful course,” Eade remarked. “It is one of the nicest (public) courses.” For the next few weeks, members will continue to hone their golf skills on the course as they anticipate the upcoming tournament.
Our Purpose
The Jamestown Park Ladies Golf Association meets every Friday for 18 holes of golf that blend friendly competition, sportsmanship and fun. Members play according to United States Golf Association guidelines and Jamestown Park Golf Course local rules while building lasting friendships, supporting one another and giving back to a community we proudly serve.
tribution, in place since 2002, is $50,000 annually. The amendment raises that to $78,000 annually for the Jamestown ABC store in Grandover Village. This store is run by the High Point ABC Board but is located in Jamestown. This is the highest revenue-producing store in the local ABC system. Contracts for services, formerly grants, were awarded to the Ragsdale YMCA for $10,000 for recreation services, Jamestown Public Library for $16,000 for library services, NC Fusion soccer for $10,000 for recreation services and Historic Jamestown Society for $10,500 for cultural and historical programming and conservation. Brant Gomez was reappointed alternate to the Planning Board, Jeff Vale as a full time member to the Board and reappointed Hope Inge to the Board. Donald Dale, Jr., was reappointed as ETJ Planning Board member. To end the evening, the Council went into closed session per General Statute 143.318 to discuss a matter related to attorney/client privilege and a personnel matter. No further business was conducted when the Council resumed the regular session. The meeting may be viewed at www. youtube.com/c/TownofJamestownNC. Click on “Live.”
ers, grow crops that would mean farming equipment, fertilizer, pesticides. There are a lot of nuisances that could occur. “Compare that to what we propose: single-family residence, parking and basically continue to use the property in the same manner as the adjacent property we currently own — a church and accessory uses.” He addressed some issues raised by the neighbors: “[One comment said] The rezoning … would cause contamination of wells and aquifers from water runoff and use of heavy equipment to construct the proposed parking lot. There was a complaint the [new] parking lot would cause noise and light pollution. There was a complaint about possible water drainage from putting in a parking lot. And concerns regarding privacy, security and personal safety. “If the property is used for agricultural, the water contamination from that would be substantially more dangerous.” French said. “The parking lot would not pose any danger to the aquifer. Farming equipment could result in damage to the aquifer. There would be a greater risk by not granting the application. “The first our pastor heard of [the water problem] was when they submitted their opposition to the application we filed. As soon as he heard, he took measures to address those, including hiring a civil engineer. The pastor also met with the neighbors multiple times.” Coyne agreed, stating, “None of the community came to me, so I didn’t know there was that significant of an issue.” Harvest Church hired Jeremy McCall Engineering Group to look into the water problem. McCall, a civil engineer, walked the site to make certain all impervious area that was constructed was draining into the current retention pond as required. “All impervious area was draining to the pond,” McCall said. He did learn that “prior to 2004, the church site was a pasture draining to the back side of 4909 Kacia Court. In 2004 with the church [construction], that drainage area was reduced from 2.81 to about 0.69 acres. The plans were designed to reduce the flow
leaving the site to pre-development conditions as required by Guilford County watershed requirements. In my professional opinion with the previous development, the area draining to those properties was reduced in the development of the property as required by Guilford County watershed requirements. “The only area that drains to the neighbors is the grass area between the parking area and the property line,” he continued. “All impervious area drains to the pond. It is about a 6 ft. drop from the elevation of the parking lot to the property line but all the pavement drains to the pond. The pond discharges into an inset that connects the pipes that go under the road.” Coyne added that he and McCall would collaborate with the civil engineer hired by the neighborhood to see if there is a reasonable solution. Most of the public comments from the audience presented related to the amount of water that residents say drain onto their properties at Kacia Court, which is off Grandover Parkway. These comments are similar to the ones voiced at the May and June Planning Board meetings and may be found in the May 20 and June 17 issues of the Jamestown News. Only one comment from the June 21 Council meeting is included below. Debbie Marlowe, who lives on Kacia Court, asked to deny the rezoning “due to the commercialstyle parking lot and commercial use of the residential house, which was an historical home. Allowing these changes would change the character of our neighborhood which is potential harm to us and our wells, our property values. I would love to have animals in that pasture, versus a parking lot. “We have an old water issue — still working on it. He’s expressing some concern to help us. Our civil engineer is going to come tomorrow. We’re hoping during a major rainstorm. The swale he mentioned in Ms. Holaday’s yard [beside the church’s back parking lot] was created from dirt falling off the drop. She didn’t create that. It’s also filled up our ditches and drainage areas. Something we
continue to deal with. We dealt with damage from the slope. Our house was flooding. Septic tank lines were flooding. We put in a French drain down our whole property line to stop water from coming across. “For years, everybody’s done things to help prevent water from still doing damage,” Marlowe added. “There’s water still coming from that 8 ft. drop off. It creates almost a stream. We’re hoping the two civil engineers could help figure out a solution. “My fear is the new parking lot is higher than us — still. So if they don’t do the drainage right with it, we’re still going to be dealing with water damage [on the other side] of the cul-de-sac. All the water in the grassy area around the parking lot is coming down our way. The church should be responsible for the cleanup.” The Council still had concerns about the rezoning and unanimously voted to continue the issue at the Aug. 18 Town Council meeting.
LDO amendments In a second public hearing, the Town Council easily approved text amendments to the Land Development Ordinance regarding FEMA flood damage prevention requirements, mirroring the decision of the July 12 Planning Board. The updates relate to Articles 3 Definitions, 7 Permits and Procedures and 18 Flood Damage Prevention regarding Flood Damage prevention for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Compliance and adoption of revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). The meeting lasted less than a half hour. “The proposed text amendment updates the Flood Damage Prevention regulations, related definitions, and references to incorporate FEMA and North Carolina Division of Emergency Management required language,” said Planning Director José Colón. “These updates are necessary for the Town to maintain compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and remain eligible for participation in the program, including the availability of federally-backed flood insurance.”

Couch Theatre By demi tAveRAS “disclosure day” (Pg13) — Three-time Oscarwinning director Steven Spielberg’s (“The Fabelmans”) latest directorial feat is now available to rent, following a box-office stint that barely made double its $115 million budget. Spielberg signed on Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada 2”) and Josh O’Connor (“Wake Up Dead Man”) to respectively play his lead actors in the film — an NBC meteorologist (Blunt) and a cybersecurity analyst (O’Connor), who join forces against the government to reveal the hard-kept secret of extraterrestrial life. Colin Firth (“Young Sherlock”) portrays a government contractor who
attempts to stop the duo in their tracks, while Colman Domingo (“Euphoria”) takes on the role of another contractor who switches sides to become an advocate for disclosure. (Fandango) “Supergirl” (Pg-13) — Another recently released film that didn’t do so well in theaters will be available to rent starting on July 28. This superhero flick led by Milly Alcock (“House of the Dragon”) follows David Corenswet’s “Superman” as the second overall film within the new DC Universe. “the dink” (Pg-13) — Jake Johnson (“New Girl” ) leads this new sportscomedy film that is out now to stream — right on time for it to compete with Will Ferrell’s series “The Hawk” (which basically has the same plot but with golf!). “The Dink” follows a cocky, washed-up tennis pro Dusty Boyd (Johnson), who suffers a hand injury

Spain’s best-kept kitchen secret 1/2 to 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, to taste, optional 1 (12 ounce) jar roasted red peppers, drained 1 (14 ounce) can fire-roasted tomatoes, well drained 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Juice and zest of half a lemon 1 1/2 tablespoons sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar
By pAtti diAmond DiVaS oN a DiMe Every country seems to have one sauce its cooks can’t live without. Americans reach for ketchup, ranch dressing or barbecue sauce. The Spanish have romesco. Pronounced “rohMESS-koh,” romesco is one of Spain’s most loved culinary secrets. Rich, silky and smoky, romesco combines roasted red peppers, tomatoes, toasted almonds, garlic and olive oil into a sauce that’s savory, a little tangy and just nutty enough to make everyday, ordinary chicken, fish or vegetables taste like they came from a neighborhood cafe overlooking the Mediterranean. Romesco comes from Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, where it has been enjoyed for generations. Like many beloved traditional recipes, romesco grew out of everyday cooking using inexpensive pantry ingredients and whatever was available. The ingredients are wonderfully humble. Some roasted red peppers, a handful of almonds, a few cloves of garlic, a splash of vinegar and some olive oil come together in minutes. It’s the kind of recipe that tastes like you spent all afternoon cooking when, in reality, your food processor did most of the work. Ask three Spanish cooks for a romesco recipe and you’ll probably get three different

Rich, smoky romesco brings a taste of Spain to the table with roasted peppers, tomatoes, almonds, garlic and olive oil. answers. Some include tomatoes while others don’t. Some use almonds, others prefer hazelnuts. The vinegar and spices vary from kitchen to kitchen, but roasted peppers, garlic, olive oil and nuts remain the heart of nearly every version. Purists and penny-pinchers (like me) will roast their own peppers and tomatoes, but good quality jarred roasted peppers and canned fire-roasted tomatoes work beautifully and save enough time to make romesco a realistic weeknight recipe. If sherry vinegar isn’t available, red wine vinegar works beautifully. To Roast Your Own Peppers and Tomatoes: Preheat the broiler and line a baking sheet with foil. Arrange 3 to 4 medium whole tomatoes and two large red bell peppers on the baking sheet. Broil 2
to 4 minutes per side, turning as needed, until the skins are blackened and blistered all over. Transfer to a bowl and cover, or place in a covered container, for 10 minutes to steam. When cool enough to handle, peel away the skins. Remove the stems, cores and seeds from the peppers, and the cores from the tomatoes before using. eaSY ROMeScO Sauce Yield: about 2 cups total time: 25 mins. 2-3 garlic cloves, chopped 1 cup raw almonds, toasted 2 thick slices (roughly 2 ounces) baguette or country-style bread, lightly toasted 1/4 cup flat leaf parsley, packed 1 teaspoon kosher salt, more to taste 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Using a food processor fitted with the steel blade, give the garlic cloves a good chop, stop the machine and scrape down the sides. Next add the toasted almonds, bread, parsley, salt and smoked paprika and pepper flakes to the bowl and process into a paste. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the roasted peppers and tomatoes. Process until smooth. With the machine running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil and vinegar, then add the lemon juice and zest. Process until smooth, adding more olive oil if needed to reach your desired consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning to your liking. Scrape into a bowl and serve. Keep a batch of romesco in the refrigerator, and suddenly ordinary chicken, vegetables, eggs and sandwiches become anything but ordinary. Here's A Tip By JoAnn deRSon Now here'S a tiP • “When I needed a new tire for my truck because I ran over a nail, the shop guy suggested I purchase a slightly used tire that was closer to the age and wear of the others. I spent less on the tire, and the tires will wear evenly. They’re always looking out for me!” — O.E. in Mississippi • When baby’s teething, try this trick from a grandma: Wet a washcloth and put it in a zip-top baggie in the freezer. When frozen, let the baby chew on it. Its texture and temperature are soothing to little gums, and it can be rinsed and refrozen easily. • For fresh oil stains, sprinkle with kitty litter and grind into the oil with your foot or a stiff brush. Then sweep up. Repeat as necessary. • “Hardware stores sell special bladders that can be filled and put inside a toilet tank to take up space, allowing the toilet to use less water per flush. You can get very close to the items on the shelf without sucking anything up but dust. If something did get sucked up, the stocking will catch it for you. This also works for toolboxes.” — W.U. in South Carolina • “Over-the-door shoe racks are perfect for holding a variety of cleaning products and small cannisters of wipes.
