Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Compliance and adoption of revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). Colón. “These updates are necessary for the Town to maintain compliance with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and remain eligible for participation in the program, including the availability of federally-backed flood insurance. “The proposed ordinance revisions include updates to the definition section, floodplain administration procedures, permitting requirements, development standards and enforcement

provisions to align with FEMA’s current non-coastal model Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance for North Carolina communities. The amendments also incorporate updated terminology, revised floodplain management practices and administrative provisions recommended by the State NFIP Branch.” Failure to adopt the updated maps before Aug. 21, 2026, would result in suspension from the NFIP until the maps are adopted,

according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. The state required an approved amendment of the LDO and revised maps by the Town Council to satisfy the requirement. There were no public comments during the public hearing and very few comments by Board members other than approval. The Town Council held a public hearing July 21 during their regular meeting to consider the amendments. A hard copy of the

County offers Ragsdale students among recipients of White Scholarship low-income By norma B. dennis FreeLanCe writer ndworddesign@gmail.com Braylon Louis and Kyle Maness, recent graduates of Ragsdale High School, are among 15 recipients of the 2026 William J. White Scholarship. The scholarship fund was established in 1980 following White’s death from cancer. In 1965, White was responsible for starting Colt baseball for local rising high school players. He was inducted into the 2010 Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame for his various contributions to youth. The scholarships are awarded to former Colt Leaguers who are entering a college or university. The criteria include academic excellence, exemplary citizenship and financial need. Bobby Dawson was the first recipient in 1981 and since then 345 additional scholarships have been awarded, including those this year. For Louis, the son of Jesse and Morgan Louis, organized baseball is pretty much a thing of the past. But it is something he will always remember. “I enjoyed my teammates and coaches,” he said. “They made the expe-

rience fun. Sports in general are a great way to get your mind off things going on in the world. You get to meet others that enjoy the same things you do who you would not meet otherwise.” Louis has played baseball since he was in kindergarten. Through the years he also participated in football and basketball. “Whatever sport I was playing at the moment was my favorite,” Louis said with a laugh. “But of all of them, I probably liked baseball best.” As a freshman at Ragsdale, Louis played first base, but was later moved to right and center outfield. He played Colt baseball the summers of his junior and senior year. In the fall, he will be attending North Carolina State University where he plans to major in mechanical engineering. “I am thankful for the opportunity to get the (White) scholarship for something I enjoyed doing,” he said. “It will be useful, especially going to State.” Having a dad as a baseball coach at Ragsdale High School, an uncle who

The Guilford County Department of Social services is accepting applications for a grant program to provide support to low-income homeowners. Grant funding will be provided to qualifying homeowners to help address rising homeownership costs and their impact on low-income homeowners. Applicants who meet the criteria will be eligible for a onetime grant payment paid directly to the homeowner. Qualifying residents whose county tax bills increased over a certain period would be eligible to receive a grant for the difference. As an example, a home whose tax value increased from $200,000 to $250,000 between 2021 and 2025 would get a check for $356 — the amount that a property owner's county tax bill went up during the period. Grants will be available to residents 65 and older for the first 30 days of the program, which began July 15. After that, then all qualifying residents may apply. Funds will be granted in the order in which complete applications are received until funds are exhausted. Qualifying residents age 65 and above may apply July 15-Aug. 15 and all qualifying residents may apply Aug. 16-Oct. 31. To be eligible, several criteria must be met: see HomeoWner, paGe 2

Wonder if the cat driving this car was taking himself to the veterinarian. i sat behind this car for several minutes at the stop light and the head turned several times. still looked like a cat. When the light changed i managed to get up beside the car at the next light. it was a woman with a cat ears headband! she must really love cats. that would have been a really big cat!

Logano rules North Wilkes Window World 450 By rUsseLL sCHmidt raCin' with rUss Joey Logano dominated the long, hot NASCAR Cup race at the rejuvenated North Wilkesboro Speedway on Saturday night. The first points race in 30 years was fairly calm, running the distance with hardly any caution flags. The sold-out affair saw packed grandstands of happy race fans anxious to see their favorite drivers at their local raceway after such a gap of deafening silence! Ryan Blaney had been the pole sitter, but a power steering issue sent them to the back putting Ty Gibbs out front for the first 42 laps. Denny Hamlin took a turn for eight laps as Shane van Gisbergen nailed down 17 laps out front. But Gibbs would rally back to lead and green checker the first stage. Stage two saw Logano lead for the first of five times and 323 total laps led before all was said and done. The Penske Ford was finally hooked up the way the three-time champion liked it. Most of the action was upfront watching Logano weave his way through the pack, high or low, he was staying out front. Teammate Blaney worked his way to the front, albeit briefly with a speeding pit lane penalty sending last week’s winner to the back. He would later recover to finish an impressive 11th. SVG showed more oval prowess for the road course ringer, leading four times for 49 circuits and finishing with a rare top five. Incidents and accidents were kept to a minimum as Alex Bowman and Tyler Reddick traded paint near the halfway mark. The only other mention would be the coming together of Josh Berry and Christopher Bell.

Berry was visibly upset, finishing a few hundred laps down in 35th. Logano easily led most of the second half laps with drivers Chase Briscoe, Bubba Wallace and Brad Keselowski leading a few here and there as the field dwindled down to six cars on the lead lap. From lap 381, the Penske hot shoe led the hungry pack to the checkers for the 38th career notch with a short list of lead lap drivers to include Hamlin, Briscoe, Gibbs and SVG. The Connecticut based driver hadn’t won a NASCAR points race in well over a year, the last coming in Texas, showing the team has surely turned things around. Looking at the latest Cup points standings has Hamlin still on top by 68 over Reddick and 87 in front of Blaney.

Smith stomps North Wilkesboro truck field For the second consecutive year, Chandler Smith stormed to the lead and walked away with the largest margin of victory (8.49 seconds) in Craftsman Truck Series short track history. The FaithFest 250 started in front of an anxious local crowd with Carson Hocevar leading the first 50 laps. During that time, there was only one on track incident between Donovan Strauss and Corey LaJoie. Strauss was done and LaJoie carried on. Layne Riggs got tired of trailing Hocevar and passed the young driver, setting up a Riggs stage victory. While there was a lot of on-track action, rubbin’ and bumpin’ on the ole track kept the fans on their feet despite the warm temperatures. The second stage saw leaders Jake Garcia and Hocevar lead the most laps,

but it was Ty Majeski winning the stage over Smith and Ben Rhodes. The balance of this race saw Smith’s Ford lead from lap 146 to the checkered flag without nary a caution period. Those drivers eight seconds or better at the stripe included Riggs, SVG, Christian Eckes and Landon Lewis.

Mini truckin’ Mini Tyrrell had a busy weekend at North Wilkesboro between two CARS Tour late model races on Friday night followed by a Saturday afternoon Craftsman Truck Series race. Tyrrell and his four other Ram teammates kinda struggled on this day where all of them at one point were a lap or two down. To finish a credible 28th on the lead lap with a whole straight race truck is a mission unto itself at yet another new venue. Despite the deep finish, Mini sits 19th in Craftsman Truck Series points. Tyrrell finished mid-20s in both CARS Tour events to a packed talented field of late model ringers. He brought home two whole racecars while enjoying mixing it up again with some familiar faces. “Kid” Kimi Antonelli wins No. 6 at Spa Italian driver Kimi Antonelli continued on his tear through F1 circuits, this time at the very famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium for his sixth checkers in 10 events. Amazing! The 19-year-old Mercedes driver took the lead on the opening lap and never looked back, besting Ferrari shoe Charles Leclerc and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. The margin of victory to Leclerc was a few seconds back while third place Verstappen was a distant 11 seconds in arrears.

Looking at the latest F1 points has Antonelli still on top, now 45 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 50 in front of teammate George Russell. QUIK BITS… Craftsman Truck Series points leader Layne Riggs was heard to talk about his future racing plans to include a tour in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series or a deal directly to a full-time Cup gig. Lots of decisions to make for the six-time truck winner.

From Rumorville It sounds as if two NASCAR drivers have selected their rides for 2027. From the Cup side, you can expect Todd Gilliland to be back in the No. 34 Ford with sponsor Loves plastered all over the truck for the upcoming season. The 26-year-old North Carolina driver is thrilled to be back and looking forward to more top 10 runs. The other driver returning to action next season is multi-time O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion Justin Allgaier, aboard the bright red Brandt No. 7 sponsored Chevy. Rumors of the 40-year-old driver looking to Cup competition are still on the table for the “not getting any younger” talented driver. That’s it for this week. Look for NASCAR news from Cup and O’Reilly racing at Indy while the Craftsman Trucks compete down the road in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as Indy and F1 racing. If you have questions or comments, contact Russ at racinwithruss@gmail.com

Both Louis and Maness attended the White scholarship awards ceremony that was held July 22 between evening games of the Colt East Zone Tournament at Stoner-White Stadium in Greensboro Jaycee Park. Courtney Lowrance, White’s granddaughter, and Bobby Dawson, the first scholarship recipient, presented the checks and plaques respectively to all scholarship winners in attendance.

The chicken recipe you’ll use every week

Here's A Tip

“What is there to eat?” That question plays on repeat in households everywhere. Today I’m sharing one of the handiest short cuts to give you a great answer when the inevitable question is asked. Now you can say, “There’s chicken in the fridge, go make yourself something!” I call this recipe “Every Week Chicken” because I make this chicken nearly every week for my family. And once you try this, you might do the same. Chicken breast can be troublesome because they’re so lean, it’s easy to overcook. You’ll find this recipe produces tender, juicy chicken every time. This is a simple recipe for oven-roasted chicken breasts. It’s perfect for an easy dinner or to make in advance for meal prep all week long. Moist and flavorful, this is the chicken you want waiting in the fridge to expedite your dinner, stick in a salad, slam on a sandwich, toss in a pasta, put on a pizza. You get the idea. This simple salt and pepper seasoning gives the chicken tons of flavor yet keeps it neutral enough to play well with other flavor profiles. As always, feel free to adjust to your personal preferences.

• “I have stained coffee cups. My hands have arthritis, and it’s hard to wash them by hand. A young woman at church suggested I purchase a small bottle of dishwasher soap. The kind you put in a dishwasher, even though I don’t have one. I squirt a little in the cup and add hot water. It sits while I wash up the other dishes and then swishes right out.” — T.T. in Missouri • “Check your area to see if vocational schools offer low-cost or free auto repairs. Sometimes you can have work done for the cost of parts so that students can be trained on your issue.” — R.E. in North Carolina • “For the summer I fill a gym-size duffel bag with “spontaneity supplies” and keep it in the trunk of my car. It includes swimsuits for all family members, a blanket and cups, plates and silverware for a picnic. Now, if we find we have some unexpected free time, we can go to the beach or pool, or have a picnic by just picking up some sandwich supplies from the closest grocery store!” — via e-mail • You can use a clean paper milk carton to pour batter for pancakes. The spout makes it easy to pour and reduces splatter. • “I got tired of always looking for the dustpan, and so I put a magnet on the back of it. It sticks right on the side of the fridge, right next to the broom.” — L.M. in Kentucky • Avoid eye strain by making sure your computer monitor is in the correct position. It should be placed directly in front of you, at least an arm’s length away. If you have trouble seeing the screen, you can adjust the resolution to make the screen items bigger.

EVERY WEEK CHICKEN 4 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast (about 6 breasts) 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper Olive oil or your choice of cooking spray Preheat oven to 375 F degrees. For easy clean up, line a baking sheet with parchment or foil. Brush the chicken with olive oil or give it a quick spray of cooking spray. Mix the salt and pepper in a small bowl and season both sides of the chicken breasts with the mixture, then put them on the prepared baking sheet, uncovered. Place them in oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the chicken when it reaches

One batch of juicy “Every Week Chicken” today means faster, easier dinners all week long. 160 F. Carryover heat will bring it to a safe final temperature while it rests. Remove the chicken and rest, covered with foil, for 15 minutes. This cooking time works on chicken breasts of nearly all sizes, 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches thick. If your chicken breast is thinner than 3/4 inch thick, reduce cooking time to 25 minutes. To store, place in a storage container with the accumulated pan juices over the chicken for flavor and to keep the chicken moist. Store in the fridge for up to five days. So, what do you do with all that chicken? Well, besides chicken salad, sandwiches and wraps, here are three fabulous ideas: BBQ Chicken French Bread Pizza: Split a loaf of French bread lengthwise and spread with barbecue sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella, cooked shredded chicken and chopped red onion. Bake at 400 degrees until the bread is crisp and the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 15 minutes. Finish with a drizzle of additional barbecue sauce and a sprinkle of chopped

cilantro before slicing and serving. Chicken Avocado Quesadillas: Layer shredded mozzarella, cooked chicken and diced avocado between two flour tortillas. Add a drizzle of your favorite sauce, such as ranch, barbecue or teriyaki, if you’d like. Cook in a skillet over medium heat until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted, then slice into wedges and serve. Quick Chicken Alfredo: Make sliced leftover chicken into a fast comfort meal by simmering it with jarred Alfredo sauce, a splash of milk, butter and Italian seasonings. Spoon over cooked egg noodles and finish with chopped parsley. Sometimes the simplest recipes become the ones you reach for again and again. I have a feeling this will be one of them. Enjoy!
