Big names, former champions join 2026 Wyndham BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The field just keeps getting better. The last day PGA Tour golfers could register for the 2026 Wyndham Championship, which this year fell on July 31, Tom Kim, Jason Day, Billy Horschel, Hideki Matsuyama, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger all joined the field for the tournament, which begins Aug. 6 The previous day, Jackson Koivun, Brian Harmon and Charlotte’s Truist Championship winner Sepp Straka joined three-time major winner Jordan Spieth, J.T.
Poston, five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, Keegan Bradley, Patrick Cantlay, Maverick McNealy, Harris English, Ben Griffin, Ryan Gerard, Alex Fitzpatrick, Alex Smalley, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Bud Cauley, Eric Cole, Sungjae Im, Alex Noren, Sahith Theegala and two-time major winner Justin Thomas. Koivun, only 21 years old, won the 3M Championship in July in only his third professional start. He finished fifth in last year’s Wyndham Champion as an amateur. Several of these players have North Carolina ties, whether currently living in
the state or attending university here. Former Wyndham champions scheduled to play along with Cameron Young (2025) are Brandt Snedeker (2007, 2018), Webb Simpson (2011), J.T. Poston (2019), Tom Kim (2022), Lucas Glover (2023) and Aaron Rai (2024). Kim won the Genesis Scottish Open in July and finished third at the U.S. Open. Rai won the 2026 PGA Championship. “Having the reigning PGA Champion in the Wyndham Championship field is a big deal,” said Executive Director Mark Brazil. “Aaron
showed the world what a great player is when he won by three on a very difficult golf course, but we saw him play 72 holes in three days at Sedgefield Country Club so we already knew he had it in him.” Si Woo Kim, the 2016 champion, withdrew from the field last Friday. Young is ranked No. 3 in the world. Last year’s Wyndham win was his first as a PGA professional and he has since gone on to win the Players and Cadillac championships this year, tied for second at the Open Championship SEE JOIN, PAGE 2

The Wyndham Championship officially begins tomorrow, Aug. 6, with last year’s champion, Cameron Young, returning to celebrate and defend his victory. Young’s isn’t the only celebration going on. Sedgefield Country Club is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. History The Sedgefield area was planned as a self-sufficient resort community for wealthy northerners and a retreat from city life in the state. It originally was a hunting preserve for many of those northerners. “The story of Sedgefield – its golf course of superlative excellence, its natural beauty, its picturesque layout, and its uniqueness as a development – has been carried through the eastern states by those who have visited Sedgefield, and have seen what is there.” So reads the flowery words of a real estate ad, possibly in 1926,

Leave our flag alone There is no accounting for the things that may suddenly appear in one’s email. For me, most unsolicited email NORMA B. DENNIS goes unread, quickly ndworddesign@gmail.com deleted with the click of a button. But one such email recently caught my attention strictly for the absurdity of it. Seeing the title “Basketball Hoops, BBQ Sauce + Trucks Voted the Flag Symbols That Best Represents Modern North Carolina,” made curiosity get the better of me and I had to see what that meant. A survey by Custom Made Casino had asked people to imagine what their state flag should look like if redesigned for current times. With responses from 3,014 people, the results suggested that if states were starting from scratch today, many would suggest skipping the traditional historic approach and going for more modern symbols. “State flags are one of the oldest forms of place branding,” said Adam Marks, founder of Custom Made Casino. “They are meant to tell people what a state stands for, what it values, and how it wants to be recognized. What this survey shows is that people think about state identity in a

The N.C. General Assembly is considering giving $40 million in funding to the Piedmont Triad Charitable Foundation if the Wyndham Championship stays in Greensboro from at least 2028-2031 – contingent on the PGA running the tournament at “the highest tier ranking of professional golfers.” The payout would be $10 million a year for the four years. Judging from the list of golfers participating in the tournament this year, that should not be a problem. The N.C. House originated the bill (HB 268) and the Senate recently passed the bill – with the contingency. If the House approved the amended bill at their Aug. 4 meeting, the Wyndham receives the windfall. Established in 1967, it runs the annual PGA Tour golf tournament to distribute proceeds and raise funds for central North Carolina charities, including food security and youth golf. Birdies Fore Backpacks, the Tesori Family Foundation, First Tee of the Triad, the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Western North Carolina Hurricane Relief are just a few of the charities benefiting from the tournament. PTCF plans to turn the Wyndham into one of the PGA Tour’s main events, which include the four major tournaments, the Players and FedEx Cup playoffs. It also includes the Presidents and Ryder Cup tournaments. The state funding would go a long way to making that goal a reality. Cadillac tops 6-hour IMSA Road America BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS The IMSA Racing series was in full swing over the weekend for their 6-hours at Road America event. Four classes compete at the same time on the same track with some interesting passing results. Track officials welcomed with open arms the national and international flavor of drivers and cars in competition alongside a very enthusiastic crowd. Practice and qualifying started the weekend exhibiting the power and speed of Team Acura capturing the front row for the second consecutive year. Brit Nick Yelloy driving a bright red, white and black Phillips 66 sponsored GTP car zipped a fast lap of 1.49.233, averaging 133 mph. The Motul Sports Car Endurance Grand Prix started at noon under clear and sunny skies. A great crowd was scattered around the large 4-mile road course ready to watch the 54-car field compete through the rolling hills of Elkhart Lake, Wis. The GTP cars zoomed away with the likes of Marco Whitman, Felipe
Nasr and Louis Deletraz wheeling his Prototype spaceship looking like Caddy giving chase. Six hours is a long time for all concerned from drivers to crewmen and officials, especially with higher temps. As the six-hour mark approached, a two-car incident between GTP cars of Aiken and Vahorne were eliminated from competition and officials called the race because of extensive clean-up time. The overall winner was Team Cadillac of Wayne Taylor Racing with Felipe Albuquerque behind the wheel. Lauren Heinrich driving a Porsche 963 was runnerup with Louis Deletraz Cadillac capping the podium. Other class winners on the day included Tom Dillman topping the LMP2 division, GTD Pro went to Andrea Caldarelli wheeling a Lambo and GTD honors to Philip Ellis piloting a Mercedes-AMG. Note: Watching the IMSA racing over the weekend brought to mind many similar events I’ve covered in person including Road America, Sebring, Daytona, etc. If you’ve never attended an event such as this, you owe it to yourself to do some-
thing different other than NASCAR’s circles in taxi cab style race cars. The cars, the paint schemes, the multi-class competition all add up to some great entertainment.

Councilmembers respond to letter to editor BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com The July 8 issue of the Jamestown News featured a letter to the editor titled “Opinion of Fourth of July celebration regarding council members” by former Town Manager Cookie Billings. In it, while Billings praised the entire Music in the Park event on July 3, the establishment of Wrenn Miller Park and “the great respect we held for Mayors and Councilmembers who served as dedicated volunteers and helped create visionary plans for Jamestown’s future,” she took exception with two councilmembers with whom she spoke.” Billings recalled the times when citizen volunteer service was important to the Council and when she attempted to speak to the councilmembers, “they sim-

ply walked away from me.” At the beginning of the July 21 Town Council meeting, those councilmembers offered statements in regard to the letter without recognizing the author. “The letter mischaracterizes the interaction with myself and Councilwoman Sarah Glanville during the July 3rd Music in the Park,” said Councilmember Pam Burgess. “Contrary to the resident’s assertions, town employee morale was not part of the conversation. Additionally, the decision for myself and Councilwoman Glanville to step away from the interaction was made strictly in the pursuit of peace after being met with angry and intimidating approach. By walking away from hostile interaction at public events or in any other situation simply demonstrates the desire for us to de-escalate negative interaction with respect and civility and does not represent weak leadership. “As I have mentioned several times, our residents are our top priority and we continue to welcome constructive dialogue with all of our residents in the proper channels and with respect. “Therefore, we do continue to encourage everyone with ideas and opinions and concerns to, please, feel free to reach out as we welcome and embrace civil dialogue,” Burgess concluded. “We all love coming together at the events and we also enjoy supporting our community and our work and our service to our community certainly does not stop at this Council table. Thank you.” “I am typically not one
to respond to social media,” echoed Councilmember Glanville. “I don’t typically find it to be productive conversations. I feel it devolves quickly into attacks. But since this was a letter to the editor, I really want to make it very, very clear it called into question integrity around volunteerism and our commitment to this job. “I have a thick skin and people can say what they want. I know what’s in my heart. I know this Council knows what’s in my heart and my commitment to this town. “What I was really, really upset about was calling to question Councilmember Burgess’ commitment to this town. If anyone knows Councilmember Burgess, which clearly this person who wrote the letter did not, knows that no one is more committed to this town. She is out here every day visiting residents. When we were on the campaign trail, she would meet people who were having a life event. She would bring gifts to their homes after we had visited. “During the event when it was hot to keep your composure, she welcomed every person with a smile. We had some residents sit and eat with us for a bit. No one walked away feeling like they were being neglected by Councilwoman Burgess. “I really need to put that on the public that calling her integrity into question really showed more about the person who wrote the article than about Councilmember Burgess.” Billings’ complete letter may be found in the July 8 Jamestown News.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT last month, tied for third at the Masters in April. “We figured that, as soon as Cam won, it would be contagious, and he’d win a lot more in a hurry,” Brazil said. “Now he’s one of the top players in the world, and he has the firepower to compete with anyone.” “I was fortunate enough to win last year, and I want to go back because I love the tournament and you know it’s my first opportunity to defend the championship title,” said Young. “I’m comfortable there because it’s near where I went to college. I like the golf course. It’s really a nice tournament. So, there are a number of reasons that I’m looking forward to coming back.” If he does win here again, he would be the first repeat winner of the tournament since Sam Snead did it twice, 1949-50 and 1955-56. Although not a Wyndham Championship winner, Justin Thomas won the 2009 AJGA Wyndham Invitational presented by Odyssey and earned an exemption to the Wyndham that year. At age 16, he become the third-youngest player to make the 36-hole cut in PGA Tour history. The 87th Wyndham Championship is the last tournament of the regular season. “This field is another extremely strong Wyndham Championship field,” Brazil said. “It’s about making the top 70 and advancing into the FedExCup playoffs. It’s about making the top 50 after the BMW Championship in two weeks to be in the 2027 signature events and earn money from the massive bonus pool paid prior to the Tour Championship. These numbers show the significance of the Wyndham Championship date very clearly,” The full list of players can be found at https://www. pgatour.com/tournaments/2026/wyndham-championship/ R2026013. Can Young win back to back Championships or will it be another first-time PGA Tour winner, as has happened several times in the past. Previous first-time winners included Rai, Tom Kim, J.T. Poston, Si Woo Kim Webb Simpson and Snedeker.

FLAG
SEDGEFIELD CONTINUED FROM FRONT
CONTINUED FROM FRONT much more modern, everyday way.” To represent their state with a recognizable symbol, people picked foods, frustrations, habits, stereotypes and local details that to them feel instantly recognizable in today’s world. “That kind of instant recognition is exactly what strong branding is meant to achieve,” Marks said. North Carolinians choose a food, a sport and a movement to appear on their flag if redesigned today. No. 1 was a basketball hoop. In this state, allegiance to a particular college can instantly divide persons – even families – with unmatched intensity. For some, the basketball hoop would surely signify what the Old North State is about. Others were more inclined to the food category with a BBQ sauce bottle coming in as No. 2. A bottle of sauce is not only a favorite condiment, it is a location. In a state where barbecue opinions can become geography lessons between east and west,
people felt the sauce bottle should have its place on the flag. No. 3 on the list was a moving truck, which indicates the state’s modern growth story. Many larger cities have become magnets for newcomers with jobs and new developments making the state seemingly discovered by many all at once. The entire survey indicated that modern state identity could be somewhat complicated. It reaches farther than an official motto or founding date, touching on things residents often joke about because, realistically, they ring true. All that being said, this relocated Southern girl, who has lived in North Carolina since she was 4, is quite happy with our state flag exactly as it is designed. And as the saying goes, “I like calling North Carolina home.” (The original article came from Blake Crace of info@freshlygroundmedia.com. The course This “superlative” golf course, located in the exclusive neighborhood, is once again hosting one of the oldest consecutively played golf tournaments in the United States. To create a course worthy of national attention, Sedgefield, Inc. hired “the foremost golf course architect in the country,” Scotsman and Pinehurst resident Donald Ross, to design two 18-hole courses. Only one course, Valley Brook (originally named the Blue Course by Ross) which featured grass greens, was completed and opened as Sedgefield Country Club on Oct. 24, 1925, making it one of the oldest country clubs in North Carolina. Two holes of the Lake Links Course (the Red Course) were built, one where the driving range is today and the other ending at the current tennis center, but they were abandoned due to the Great Depression. With no land-clearing machinery in existence, all the trees were felled by hand and stumps removed by hand and mules. Mule teams dragged a sled or plane to level the fairways. “Grass putting greens
will be used in spring, summer and fall, and in winter will be sanded,” states the brochure. Greens fees in 1939 were $1.50 weekdays and $2 Sundays. Opening day saw trick golfer Joe Kirkwood and Watts Gunn, runner-up to famed Bobby Jones in the recent national amateur tournament, playing Sedgefield professional Andy Gray and Tully (last name unknown), an amateur from Greensboro. The PGA of the Carolinas played a match with the winner receiving $400. Area club players and ladies played other rounds. Designer Donald Ross was not able to attend. The original caddy shack is still beside the clubhouse. The course has been recognized among the Top 20 Courses in North Carolina by GOLF.com and the North Carolina Golf Panel. Sedgefield Country Club purchased the inn in 1967 and moved their headquarters there, making the English Tudor former inn the clubhouse. Renovations in 1992 turned the upstairs into an office area and men’s locker room. Legacy Sedgefield’s legacy includes co-hosting – with Starmount Forest Country Club – the Greater Greensboro Open (GGO) beginning in 1938, won by Sam Snead, the first of his eight wins in Greensboro. The winner’s trophy is named the Sam Snead cup after him. Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen and other major champions in

Once there, she immediately gets caught by his relatives and, to save face, states that she’s Matteo’s fiancee. While this appeases his family momentarily, she also encounters Matteo’s cousin, Michael (Page), and feels an intense romantic connection with him. Talk about trouble in
Tuscany! (Peacock) “Alley Cats” (TV-MA) — This British adult-animated series comes from the mind of Ricky Gervais (“The Office”), which we all should know by now is a perverse and hysterical place. The series follows a gang of feral cats, led by a large orange cat named Gus (Gervais), as they spend their time frolicking in alleys, neighborhoods, cemeteries and parking lots. While these cats do ordinary cat things like playfight, scratch up furniture, and jump on people, they also ponder their existence and what it really means to be a beautiful ball of fluff in such a dangerous world. The six-episode series premieres on Aug. 7. (Netflix) ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.

The easiest elegant dessert you’ll make all summer
BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME
The first time I saw panna cotta, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was looking at. There on the plate was this perfectly smooth, glossy little dessert. It wasn’t pudding. It wasn’t custard. It certainly didn’t look like gelatin. Then I took a bite. If Jell-O and vanilla ice cream had a love child, this would be it. And I would eat it. Panna cotta is one of those desserts that looks far more sophisticated than it is. The name is Italian for “cooked cream,” which is a wonderfully straightforward description of something that tastes so luxurious. At its simplest, panna cotta is cream, sugar and gelatin, usually flavored with vanilla. Unlike traditional custard, there are no eggs to temper and no water bath to deal with. Gelatin does the structural work, setting the cream just enough that it holds its shape while remaining soft, silky and impossibly creamy. And in the middle of summer, that’s exactly the sort of dessert we want. Panna cotta is made ahead and served thoroughly chilled, so there’s no last-minute cooking when the kitchen already feels like the surface of Mercury. Make it in individual ramekins, glasses or little jars, refrigerate until set, then dress it up just before serving. Fresh berries are lovely, but don’t stop there. Top it with

A little citrus adds brightness to all that glorious cream. Best of all, panna cotta has that rare culinary superpower: It makes people think you’ve done considerably more work than you actually have. And that’s divine.
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste with seeds (or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract)
For serving: Fresh peaches, berries, cherries and/or mint leaves, optional Bloom the gelatin: Pour the cold milk into a medium saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin evenly over the surface, then whisk to combine. Let stand 5 minutes. The gelatin will swell and the milk may look curdled. Don’t panic; it’s supposed to look like that. PANNA COTTA Place the saucepan over Yield: 4 to 6 Servings Total Time: 4 hours 20 mins. medium-low heat and whisk gently until the gelatin has 1 1/2 cups cold whole milk completely dissolved and the 1 envelope (1/4 ounce) mixture looks like milk again. unflavored gelatin (milk = no lumps.) 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping Do not allow the mixture to cream simmer or boil; excessive heat 1/3 cup sugar can weaken gelatin’s setting 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon power. zest, optional Add the cream, sugar, lemon 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
zest and salt. Warm gently, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Do not boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla bean paste or extract. Let stand 10 minutes to allow the flavors to mingle. Pour the mixture into a large bowl or measuring pitcher, preferably clear if using vanilla bean paste. Refrigerate, uncovered, for about 1 hour, stirring well after 30 and 45 minutes and scraping down the sides. This allows the mixture to thicken slightly so all those lovely vanilla seeds stay suspended instead of staging a mass migration to the bottom. After about 1 hour, the panna cotta should have the consistency of heavy cream, and the vanilla seeds should remain suspended after stirring. Divide evenly among serving glasses or ramekins. Refrigerate at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, until set. Top with fresh fruit and mint, if desired. Serve it after dinner on the patio, perhaps with a glass of prosecco, and for a few glorious minutes you can pretend you’re spending a summer evening in Italy. Here's A Tip BY JOANN DERSON NOW HERE'S A TIP • “I have a pair of pants I wear to garden in. The knees wore out, naturally, and I went to sew patches on the knees. I left the top of the patch open, and when needed I slip a piece of foam rubber in the knee. Magical knee pads!” — R.E. in Oregon • Are you great behind the lens of your camera and love animals? Consider donating your time to your local animal shelter as a pet photographer. Showing Mittens and Fido off to their best advantage can mean the difference in finding a forever home. Check with your local rescue organizations, too! • To clean your tarnished silver jewelry, simply line a tray or shallow bowl with aluminum foil, lay the pieces on the foil and fill with a hot water and detergent solution (NOT bleach-containing). You may also use baking soda and hot water. Swish and allow the tarnish to transfer to the foil. Use a soft cloth to dry. • “If your windshield or back window fogs over, try this trick, borrowed from the bathroom: Spread regular shaving cream over the window and wipe clean with a cloth. Buff off any streaks with newspaper. This will last a good while!” — P.P. in South Carolina • Now is the time to tighten your cane-bottomed chairs. Flip the chair over, then soak the cane with hot water and allow it to dry fully in the sun. • “If your plastic wrap gets sticky, place it in the refrigerator.
