Brennan wins the final Wyndham by three It’s August. The Wyndham Championship was here … and as usual, so was the rain … and humidity. The first three rounds were delayed by rain but the second round delay was so short that players walking in from the No. 17 green just turned around when they got to the clubhouse to resume their round. But Sunday was perfect for the final round. The only cloud in the sky appeared to be over Beau Hossler’s head, who needed to win the tournament to get

into the FedExCup Playoffs. But, just because you led the first three rounds does not guarantee a victory. Hossler, who was the clubhouse leader the first three rounds could not keep up with Michael Brennan, who had a string of five consecutive birdies on the front nine. Brennan took over on the 6th hole with his third consecutive birdie and never looked back to pull ahead of Hossler. He stayed there for the entire back nine. “I did really well on the front nine. Staying within myself. Hitting good shots. Felt like I was really in control,” Brennan said after

COMPILED BY NORMA B. DENNIS JBA TO MEET AT THE GATHERING TABLE The Jamestown Business Association will hold its next meeting at The Gathering Table, located at Furnitureland South, on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. Mark your calendars now. The Meet ‘N Greet in June was a great success with about 60 people attending. Be sure to attend the August meeting to connect with fellow business owners and share your ideas. BARRY MANILOW AWARDS $10,000 TO GCS MUSIC TEACHER Local music director Andrew Oldham of Ragsdale High School was among several Guilford County music teachers under consideraton to receive the Manilow Music Teacher Award, presented by entertainer Barry Manilow Aug. 10 during his concert at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro. The Greensboro show was among nine stops on Manilow’s farewell tour and he has been celebrating teachers at each stop. Manilow’s team researched and selected teachers from 10 Guilford County schools before opening the list to online voting. Other teachers included Jeremy Ray, Grimsley; Jaleel Wright, High Point Central; Christina Jones, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts; Eddie Deaton, Page; Brian McMath, Northwest Guilford; James DeFiglia, Weaver Academy; Travis Pike, Southeast Guilford; Jerico Carrillo, Southern Guilford; and Donald Walter, Northwest Guilford middle school/high school. The winner was Eddie Deaton of Page High School. He received a $5,000 personal cash award and $5,000 for instruments for his school. According to his spokesperson, Taylor Perry, over the years, Manilow has donated millions of dollars in instruments and resources to schools across the country to ensure access to music education for future generations. STATEWIDE CAMPAIGN TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF LIFE‑SAVING TEXT‑TO‑911 The N.C. 911 Board, which operates under the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT), has launched a campaign to raise awareness of Text‑to‑911. This critical service allows residents to reach emergency responders by text message when calling 911 is not possible or safe. The goal is to ensure the public understands when and how to use Text‑to‑911, especially in situations where every second counts. Text‑to‑911 is designed to support individuals who may be unable to speak due to a medical emergency; in unsafe situations where placing a voice call could increase the risk of harm; deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing a speech‑related disability. The PSA message is, “Call if you can, text if you can’t.” “When calling is not possible or safe, texting gives people another lifeline to reach trained 911 professionals who are ready to respond,” said L.V. (Pokey) Harris, executive director of the N.C. 911 Board. In 2025, more than 70,000 Text‑to‑911 messages were sent to emergency communication centers across North Carolina. This high volume underscores the essential role Text‑to‑911 plays in providing residents with multiple, reliable ways to reach help during an emergency. his victory. “Got a little nervous after 10 and 11 but a really nice par put on 12 steadied me.” He said making the FedExCup Playoffs means everything to him. “I feel I’ve played the best golf I have all year the last few weeks. I’m playing really, really solid.” Next week’s playoff will be his seventh tournament in a row and he will probably be running on fumes then. Brennan, 24, won by three strokes and did not need his 18th hole birdie. After a big hug on the green, his mother told him he got into the Masters next year with this

win. He was not aware. He was probably aware of his earnings, however – $1.5 million. This was his second PGA Tour win. 2022 winner Tom Kim also tied for the lead several times but finished tied for fifth. Brennan had a lot of Wake Forest fans following him because he played there. With the win, he becomes the fifth Wake Forest grad with a Wyndham victory, following last year’s winner Cameron Young and Lanny Wadkins in 1983, Scott Hoch in 2001 and Webb Simpson in 2011. Ragsdale High School establishes Hall of Fame BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com The concept, “Everyone will have 15 minutes of fame,” is often contributed to something artist Andy Warhol said in the late 1960s. Whether or not that originated with him — and it is debatable — the phase has become well known, implying everyone will have some degree of acknowledgment, even if short lived. But moving forward, many people associated with Ragsdale High School athletics will have their 15 minutes of fame extended to years of recognition. The school has established a Hall of Fame that will recognize athletes, coaches and even volunteers who have contributed in a special way to the school’s athletic program. Football Coach Antwon Stevenson, who is beginning his third year at Rags-

dale, was instrumental in getting the Hall of Fame started. “Many high schools in Guilford County already have a Hall of Fame,” said Stevenson, who came to Ragsdale from Glenn High School. “I had pushed for Glenn to have one, but left before it started. This year they will recognize their third class of inductees. “I heard about so many good athletes that have come through Ragsdale and felt the school needed this kind of recognition. I mentioned it last year hoping someone would do it, but no one did.” In February of this year, after all levels of football had been completed, including the Super Bowl, Stevenson felt he had time to jumpstart the Hall of Fame. Town Council to meet Aug. 18

There’s great news about golf course revenue

The Town Council will meet Aug. 18 with several items on its agenda. The public hearing to consider rezoning 4909 Guilford College Road from Agriculture (AG) to Conditional Zoning-Single Family Residential (CZ-SFR) continues from the July 21 meeting. Harvest Church plans an expansion of its campus and to use the 1908 Ann Wiley White House on the property for church events. Additional parking was also planned. While Town staff approved the rezoning, the Planning Board voted down the request June 8. After hearing from the church and its civil engineer, along with public comments from neighbors to the property, the Council still had concerns about the rezoning and unanimously voted to continue the issue at the Aug. 18 Town Council meeting. Also on the agenda is the consideration of approval of an interlocal agreement with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office for services to the town. This discussion has been going on for months in Council budget meetings. Following the open session, the Council will go into closed session to consult with the town attorney to preserve attorneyclient privilege.

In his quarterly golf course report for the final quarter of fiscal year 2025-26, Parks and Recreation Director Scott Coakley had great news for the Town Council at their July meeting. “The golf course continued its strong financial performance during the quarter. Total revenue for April through June was approximately $582,000, an increase of more than $64,000 or approximately 12 percent compared to the same quarter last year,” Coakley said. “The largest gains came from greens fees and rentals, reflecting continued growth in rounds played and overall activity. We also experienced steady performance in concessions, pro shop sales and clubhouse rentals. “As expected, fourth quarter’s expenditures included several planned capital purchases and continued investments in maintaining the golf course. Those capital expenditures are budgeted separately from operating expenses and represent long-term investments that will benefit the course for

many years. “This year’s financial results represent an important milestone in the financial performance of Jamestown Park Golf Course. Over the past six financial years, we have worked diligently to strengthen the financial performance of the golf course. During the earlier years of this period, the course experienced operating losses. However, each year we made steady progress by increasing revenue and controlling expenses and improving operational efficiency. “I’m pleased to report that 202526 marks the first operating surplus during this six-year period with an operating profit of $57,856. This achievement represents years of steady progress and a continued commitment for responsible financial management. Revenue increased from approximately $1 million in fiscal year 2020-21 to approximately $1.64 million this year, an increase of more than 52 percent. We experienced strong growth in cart rentals, increased rounds of plan, expanded tournaments and greater use of our clubhouse facilities. Fiscal year 2025-

Gibbs tops Cupster in Iowa BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS Young Ty Gibbs put together several dozen great laps to catch leaders Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney late in the Iowa Corn 350 to come away with his second win of the season. The Toyota driver hardly put a wheel wrong all day, thanking his Joe Gibbs crew for all their hard work. The race started with a packed crowd anxious to see their favorite NASCAR drivers compete at their local Iowa Speedway as pole sitter Blaney blasted away at the head of the pack. It only took five laps in to see the first caution flag fly for a two-car incident started by Tyler Reddick sliding up and into a hapless Erik Jones. Both race cars were done for the day. Back to on-track action with Blaney out front, Shane van Gisbergen spun on his own on lap 92 with no damage along with a few other one and two-car lazy spins. No harm, no foul. I’d be remiss not to mention part of the plight of Kyle Larson with a pretty miserable day for the NASCAR champion with handling and mechanical woes ending his day 15 laps shy of the finish line. The end of the first stage saw teammates Blaney and Joey Logano take the top two spots with Ross Chastain not far behind. Stage two action saw Bubba Wallace and Bell go back and forth before Bell checkered the stage with Logano nearby. The final and longest stage of the day rolled along as the field really spread out with Gibbs comfortable out front as Bell and Blaney

gave chase to the line watching the Toyota roll into the winner’s circle. Bell is credited with his seventh runner-up finish of the season followed by a late resurgent Blaney, Josh Berry and Denny Hamlin. Looking at the latest points standings finds Hamlin still out front, now by 103 over Gibbs and 110 ahead of Blaney. Kvapil doubles up in Iowa When the HyVee Parks 250 started on Saturday night in Iowa, Carson Kvapil was nowhere near the front. But the young driver wrestled the lead from Cup regular Chastain with just eight to go, standing tall in victory lane. The well attended race saw pole sitter Ryan Sieg lead the first 65 laps including checkering the stage just in front of fast company drivers Justin Allgaier and Sheldon Creed. Stage two action was minimal as Creed and Allgaier battled for the top spot. Allgaier came away with the second stage win, his seventh of the season. The rest of this race was about to get wild starting with a quick single car spin by Anthony Alfredo on lap 151 followed quickly five laps later in a two-car mess with Patrick Staropoli and William Sawalich. Five, yes, I said FIVE more one and two car wrecks slowed the action down before the wreck of the race took place on lap 253. Some of the eight race cars involved included Sieg, Allgaier, Sam Mayer and Sammy Smith. Kvapil’s Chevy was able to hang on to the lead to claim his second win over the past two races with Rajah Caruth putting on a good

battle for runner-up. The balance of the top five finishers were Sawalich, Chastain and Creed. The latest points stats has Allgaier still well out front by a huge 265 points over Kvapil and 269 over Jesse Love. Open wheelers The NTT IndyCar Series competed in Portland, Ore. over the weekend as champion Alex Palou added his sixth trophy to his collection after leading more than half of 110 laps run in this year’s ONLYBULLS Grand Prix. Capping the top podium finishers included Felix Rosenqvist and Will Power. A look at the balance of this year’s schedule has just five dates remaining to determine this year’s champion. As of now Palou is 110 points ahead of Kyle Kirkwood and 118 in front of David Malukas. QUIK BITS.… Clash back at Daytona! They started by establishing bylaws with which to guide the program. Stevenson used bylaws from other schools to help frame the newly established Ragsdale High School Hall of Fame. “Someone on each subcommittee submitted eight nominations for the inaugural Hall of Fame,” Stevenson said. “They could include athletes, coaches or volunteers — anyone affiliated with any sport, both men and women. We ended up with 21 nominations, and from that select-

ed 14 for the Hall of Fame Class of 2027. After this class, nominations will be taken from the community, and the committee will choose only seven each year. “We do not want the honor to be watered down,” Stevenson added. “Nominees must be five years removed from their graduation.” This school year’s inductees will be introduced briefly at the Aug. 28 home football game. On March 6, 2027, the initial Hall of Famers will be honored at a banquet held in the school cafeteria, which can accommodate 350-400 people. Tickets to attend will cost $30 and may be purchased at school or online closer to time for the event. Names of those selected for the Hall of Fame will be displayed on a plaque in the commons area of the Art and Athletic building.

SUMMER PROGRAM ENDS Sedgefield Presbyterian Church members have completed another successful summer of fun volunteering at the Summer Lunch & Enrichment program for children at Colts Run Apartments in Greensboro. Seventy backpacks filled with school supplies were given to elementary, middle and high school students,

the surface with several surprises, good and bad. Step A will show a return to some tracks running two instead of a single race for the season. Talladega will go back to a pair of race dates for April and October 2027. In addition, look for Bristol to return to two events scheduled for April and August including being part of the Chase. And special note to witness New Hampshire as part of the Chase in a temperature friendly September venue. Sounds like NASCAR is getting down to listening to the fans in regards to extended yellows approaching the end of a stage. It happened twice during the last race, certainly slowed things down. The results of complaints has NASCAR coming up with some good ideas to curtail the length of time to get back to racing. If there’s a caution within 10 laps of the end of a stage, the stage is considered over. Rumors surrounding the next location for the Fourth of July are being put to rest with the announcement of Iowa Speedway hosting the next big American holiday. With the track’s plans to repave after this weekend, the hype buildup this far in advance should surely achieve a huge crowd. Having ARCA, NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts and Cup divisions plan to pack the house! That’s it for this week. Next week, look for NASCAR news from Richmond in the Cup, O’Reilly and Trucks series areas. In addition, we’ll cover other racing venues from around the globe such as IndyCar and F1 racing.

The VA OIG catches more scammers BY FREDDY GROVES VETERANS POST Once again, the VA Office of Inspector General has nailed fraudsters who are determined to steal benefits and cash from the VA. A pair of scammers, one of them incarcerated, cooked up a scheme to defraud seriously ill veterans. Specifically, the jailbird would call VA medical centers and impersonate VA employees to get info on veterans, including names and phone numbers. Then, with his scammer pal, they would call a veteran to get banking and credit card info for the alleged purpose of depositing Covid stimulus checks. Armed with that info, the jailbird was able to pull funds into his commissary and phone accounts. The pair was nailed on 26 counts of fraud and had harmed 60 veterans. They managed to pull the scam on over 30 VA medical clinics. The conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud are both good for 20 years in prison, with identity theft adding two more years each. Then there was the non-veteran who applied for benefits and

claimed he had both the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. While there is no central location with a list of all those who’ve received a Purple Heart for VA employees to check, once an application is made for benefits, the facts would show up on a DD-214. This scam is getting the fraudster four years in prison. Then there was the Department of Homeland Security employee who faked an application to get a VAbacked mortgage. This was a veteran who should have known better. The fake documents said he had a 100% disability rating and received monthly disability benefits. Both lies. There was no disability rating and no monthly benefit. Not knowing the docs were faked, the lender issued a mortgage for $478,000 with the VA giving loan guarantee backing. This scheme could be good for 30 years in prison. I hate to think of the money that would be lost and the number of veterans defrauded if we didn’t have the VA OIG to investigate these things. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tracking the source of pet’s food allergies BY SAM MAZOTTA PAW'S CORNER DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Starlight” has terrible skin allergies, and I haven’t been able to pinpoint the cause. She does not have fleas — I give her a monthly topical treatment and keep the house clean. She’s an indoor cat, so environmental allergies may not be a problem, according to my veterinarian. Could she have a food allergy? — Blake W. in Syracuse, New York DEAR BLAKE: A food allergy is a possibility, and you should loop in your veterinarian regarding your concerns. That way you can work together to try to eliminate potential problem foods. Like humans, dogs and cats can have an allergy to many kinds of food. That includes carbohydrates, including wheat or soy, and proteins like beef, chicken, lamb, fish or dairy. Ilana Halperin, DVM, of UC Davis Veterinary Medicine explains that in order to pinpoint the allergy,

they have owners eliminate any protein or carbohydrate that their pet has eaten in the past. This often means feeding a specialized meal made with hydrolyzed protein, which the immune system is less likely to react to. Treats and flavored chews are also off the menu. This testing phase lasts about eight to 12 weeks. It’s very important to keep your pet on this strict diet for the entire period. Giving them a treat or table scraps could set off the immune response, and your pet’s allergies will come roaring back. The results of an elimination diet may be inconclusive. Pets, like humans, can be allergic to a combination of allergens — food and dust mites (environmental), for example. Testing will take time as you and the vet work together to eliminate potential causes of your pet’s allergies and zero in on the problem food or other allergen that is making them uncomfortable. Congressman Chuck Edwards’ decision to withdraw from November’s congressional election came as no surprise after the House Ethics committee called for his censure. Folks in the mountainous 11th Congressional District must be wondering what it is going to take to elect a traditional, morally sound, responsible

North Carolinian. Madison Cawthorn won the seat in the 2020 election but it didn’t take long for voters to realize their mistake. His antics alienated even his own party: trying to smuggle a gun through airport security, driving with a revoked license, photos of him wearing women’s lingerie and boasting he had been invited to an orgy. His outrageous behavior was equaled only by his ineffectiveness. No bill he introduced was ever passed and when floodwaters left thousands without power in August 2021, Cawthorn responded with silence. Voters threw him out in 2022 and elected Chuck Edwards. Edwards, a former McDonalds franchisee, had served in the North Carolina Senate before declaring to run for congress, saying it was time for a grown-up to serve. He was endorsed by Senator Thom Tillis. Even though he lost 12 of the 15 counties in the district in the primary election, he won by capturing Buncombe County with a large enough margin to win the nomination. Hurricane Helene’s arrival in 2024, Edwards’ unquestionable support for Trump and lackluster fund raising had already made the district competitive in 26. And Edwards staged a town hall meeting in Asheville in March of 2025 that resulted in boos and frequent interruptions, questioning his inability to get more federal disaster funds for Helene, federal budget cuts and Trump’s policies. He had to be escorted from the meeting. In Washington, there had been rumors about inappropriate conduct by Edwards. The bi-partisan House Ethics Committee initiated an investigation in April of this year. Following an inten-

sive investigation, they found Edwards “fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment” through “persistent and unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” relating to two female staffers. For Republicans in the 11th district this felt like Deja vu. When Senator Dan Bishop urged Edwards to drop out of the race, the die was cast. Edwards is nothing if not a realist and decided to withdraw from running and serve out his term. The Democratic nominee for November’s election is Jamie Ager, an Asheville native, fourth generation farmer and co-founder of Hickory Nut Gap Farm, a down-to-earth operation that features pasture-fed meats in cooperation with other like-minded environmentally dedicated producers. This election is beginning to feel like a “Field of Dreams” movie playing out in Western Carolina. Central casting could not have chosen a better opponent to represent Democrats. It was already considered a highly competitive election before Edwards dropped out. It’s been more than a decade since retired quarterback Democrat Heath Shuler represented the heavily Democratic Buncombe County in Washington. Shuler chose not to run again in 2013, following the legislature’s dramatic gerrymandering of his district, including Asheville into a district heavily stacked with Republicans. Could this be the year a Democrat wins? Republicans have a problem. If polls are accurate Trump’s popularity, even among conservatives, is low and falling. Would whoever replaces Edwards as the Republican candidate even want a Trump endorsement or would they fare better without it? More importantly, could they keep Trump out of the affair even if they wanted to? The GOP has less than three months to figure out how they can win against someone reminiscent of Kevin Costner. Moality and traditional values still matter. North Carolina voters will reinforce this in November.

The Iran War is eating Trump’s presidency BY RICH LOWRY THE RICH LOWRY COLUMN An Iran war that was supposed to be brief, and then was supposed to be over, is imposing an increasing price on Donald Trump’s presidency. We’ve seen a second term of a Republican administration go this way before. There are distinct echoes of George W. Bush’s Iraq War — the conflict that Trump has long excoriated —in the president’s predicament. Now, the Iran War is different from Iraq. There is no ground invasion, no regime change, no occupation, no counterinsurgency. The casualties aren’t close to the same scale, and Donald Trump has been fighting Iran for months, whereas George W. Bush was embroiled in Iraq for years (and so were his successors). Yet, the political trajectory looks similar. Then, as now, an unpopular conflict is putting downward pressure on a Republican president’s approval rating. Mainstream pollsters routinely have Trump’s approval rating below 40%, and some put it below 35%; Fox News has him at 39%, while CNN (34%) and AP (33%) are lower. At this juncture of Bush’s second term, his average approval rating was a roughly comparable 38%, although he had further to fall as the war continued and the financial crisis hit. If the Iran War is not exacting nearly the same price in blood

and treasure as the Iraq War, it is inflicting a direct economic cost on Americans that wasn’t present during the Iraq war. It was often said of violent clashes in the streets of the U.S. in the 1960s, “The Vietnam War has come home.” Well, the Iran War came home the first time the average price per gallon of gasoline went above $4. Trump would have much more leeway to engage in a protracted operation to bring Iran to heel if the public could, in effect, forget about the war for a while, but there’s a reminder every day of what’s happening in the Strait of Hormuz on gas signs across America. In the CNN poll, 28% approve Trump’s handling of Iran, while 25% approve his handling of inflation and 21% of gas prices. These issues are related. Trump wants his presidency to matter. So, rather than being content with doing whatever he could at the margins to lower prices, he went for big, legacy-defining initiatives — tariffs and the Iran War — that raised prices. In so doing, he forfeited his signature issue of economic stewardship. In the latest Fox News poll, 33% approve of his handling of the economy and 67% disapprove. When the memorandum of understanding with Iran was signed, Trump boasted about how, by reopening the strait, it would avoid greater economic distress; he said he didn’t want to be another Herbert Hoover. Now, the strait is basically

closed again. Absent another deal, he’s faced with the choice of escalation or an ongoing lowlevel conflict, neither of which is going to be palatable to the public. The CNN poll found that nearly three-quarters of Americans think Trump hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most pressing problems. The fact is that Iran wasn’t a priority for the public and there was no attempt by the White House to make it one until after it had already launched the war. Just as Bush’s success in toppling the Taliban created the predicate for the Iraq War, Trump’s stunning capture of Nicolas Maduro made it easier to believe that the Iran war would be a cakewalk. The idealistic establishment Republican and the “America First” populist both got lured into overestimating the efficacy of American military power. We still don’t know how the Iran war will end. Perhaps Trump will manage a satisfactory conclusion, and he has more room to bounce back up again politically than Bush did after years of the Iraq War. Still, the next Republican president would be well served to be more prudent and mindful of worst-case scenarios when launching major military operations than either of his two, otherwise very different, GOP predecessors.

CONTINUED FROM FRONT 26 was also the strongest annual revenue growth for the six-year period with revenues increasing nearly 17 percent over the previous year.” Coakley said management focused on responsible expense management, noting maintenance costs naturally increased. He said golf shop operations reduced personnel and contracted service costs. “These improvements, combined with continued revenue growth, allowed us to eliminate reoccurring operating losses and achieve a positive operating result,” he said. “Capital expenditures include equipment, facilities and infrastructure improvements. Separating operating results from capital investments provides the clearest picture of financial performance. Operating results answers whether or not the golf course generates sufficient revenue to cover the cost of daily operations. Capital investments indicate the town’s ongoing commitment to preserving and improving this valuable public asset.” Coakley said the numbers tell the story of the Golf Course’s financial progress, with reduced operating losses, increased revenue and expenses being responsibly managed. It all goes back to the Town’s continued investment in the facility. “This operating surplus is not the achievement of one department or one individual. It is the result of teamwork, collaboration and employees who take pride in serving this community every day,” he added. He thanked several people for helping make this happen: the town manager and assistant town manager, finance director and finance department, and employees of the Parks and Recreation Department and golf course team. “This has been an exceptional year for both departments and the success we’re celebrating tonight belongs to them,” Coakley said. “[They] work together as one unit. They share equipment, resources, responsibilities and are always willing to step in and help wherever it is needed, whether it’s

maintaining our parks, preparing the golf course before sunrise, supporting tournaments, community events or providing exceptional customer service. Their dedication has strengthened not only our financial performance of the golf course, but also the quality of services we provide throughout our Parks and Recreation Department. Jamestown Park Golf Course is financially stronger today than it has been in recent years. We remain committed to building on that success.” At the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting Aug. 3, Coakley ask the committee for recommendations about rates charged at the golf course. It appears some players are receiving more than one discount each time they come to play. For example, some people get both resident and senior rates. Committee members agreed only one rate should apply. The Committee suggested Coakley check other courses to see what they do as well as speak with the Jamestown Golf Association about updating their membership forms. The greens were aerified July 6 and 7 and have grown back nicely, according to Justin May, Golf Superintendent. He added that drought has caused the ponds on the course to get low but recent rains have helped fill them up. New projects are redoing some cart paths and fixing potholes as well as sodding some of the shady fairways this fall. The Capital Improvement Program lists purchase of a bed knife grinder but mechanic Justin King is rebuilding an older one. Concrete for sidewalks and shelters in the park area will be done as will fencing and equipment for the new dog park, according to Jeff Goard, Parks & Recreation Superintendent. Work is in progress to repair damage done by the fire a couple of months ago at the new playground. Soccer rentals are up and the Town has received $50,000 revenue since taking over and opening the field at Jamestown Elementary School.

BY TERRY AND KIM KOVEL KOVEL ANTIQUES AND COLLECTING Labor Day is a good time to reflect on the history of workers in America. One of the most interesting periods came during the Great Depression with the Works Progress Administration, later called the Work Projects Administration, from 1935 to 1943. As part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, artists were employed to work on federally funded projects. Some of these projects are pieces by great artists of the 20th century, like photographs by Dorothea Lange, sculptures by Augusta Savage, or murals by Grant Wood. Others, often col-

lected as folk art today, were utilitarian items made by workers with little or no previous artistic training. These include the cloth dolls known as “WPA dolls.” They were made for schools or museum displays. Many had educational purposes, like the dolls dressed in historical or international costumes, or representing characters from stories and nursery rhymes. Some were for children’s play. This doll with long blond braids and a pink dress sold for $354 at Apple Tree Auction

Cloth dolls like this one aren’t only toys; they are pieces of American history. They were handmade in the 1930s and 1940s by artisans who received training and employement from the Works Progress Administration. Center. Listed as a “WPA Cloth Girl,” not a specific character or historical figure, she was probably made as a toy for a school or nursery. became a limited partner, but a title sponsor didn’t come until 1988 when K-Mart became the title sponsor. Over the years, it has been called the Greater Greensboro Open 1938-87 (many still call it the GGO), K-Mart Greater Greensboro Open 1988-95, Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic 1996-2002, Chrysler Classic of Greensboro 200306 or Wyndham Championship 2007-26. The Greensboro tournament has hosted many big names, including seven-time winner Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Gene Sarazen, Chi Chi Rodriquez, Gary Player, Charlie Sifford, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and many others. The North Carolina Senate recently approved $40 million for the tournament over the next four years, which could boost the tournament into the top ranks on the PGA Tour. Another vote is scheduled this week. Perhaps the GGO name will come back. With the Toyota battery factory nearby, could we see the Toyota GGO?

DIFFICULTY THIS WEEK: ◆ ◆ Moderate

◆◆ Challenging ◆◆◆ HOO BOY! ©2025 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Despite your Arian penchant for wanting to tackle a problem head-on, you might want to take a little more time to see how a current situation develops. It could surprise you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Taking on the role of peacemaker in a disruptive environment is a challenge, but you can do it. Just continue to have the same faith in yourself that so many others have in you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although your work schedule keeps you busy, you should make time to start preparing for an important upcoming family event that you’ll want to celebrate in a special way. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Home is where the Moon Child wants to be early in the week. But by week’s end, a chance to travel raises your excitement level — and that of the lucky person who gets to go along. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be careful not to be a copycat when

dealing with someone who uses unfair or even unkind methods to reach a goal. As always, do the right thing the right way, and you’ll win in the end. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An offer could have many good things attached to it that aren’t apparent at first glance, including a chance to move into another career area. You might want to check out its possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) With responsibilities surging both in the workplace and in the home, it’s important to prioritize how you deal with them. Be patient. Pressures will begin to ease starting early next week. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A positive reaction to a suggestion could indicate that you’re on track for getting your message to the right people. Devote the weekend to catching up with the special people in your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A new attitude from those in charge could make things difficult for you,

unless you can accept the changes without feeling as if you’re being pressured into doing so. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Family matters once again dominate much of the week. But don’t neglect your workplace duties while you deal with them. An offer to help could come from a surprising source. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A difficult workplace situation begins to ease, but there are still matters that need to be dealt with before it’s fully resolved. There’s also a more positive turn in domestic relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Don’t let yourself be rushed into making a decision about an intriguing financial arrangement. Asking questions and checking it out now could pay off in a big way later on. BORN THIS WEEK: You might have a tendency to be more than a bit judgmental, but others understand that it comes from a warm, loving heart. ©2026 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Camp Rock 3” (TV‑ G) — Almost 16 years after “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” premiered on The Disney Channel, the third film of the series is set to release on Aug. 14. The film was announced last fall, with news of the Jonas Brothers (“A Very Jonas Christmas Movie”) and Maria CanalsBarrera (“Wizards Beyond Waverly Place”) returning to reprise their roles. (Demi Lovato, who played lead Mitchie Torres in the previous films, serves only as an executive producer.) The film picks up as fictional band Connect 3 (Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas) head back to their beloved camp to find a new opening act after the original opener cancels

at the last minute. They plan to host a competition, and a few new campers, including Sage (Liamani Segura) and Fletch (Malachi Barton), have their sights set on taking it all.
