ABOUT TOWN SOUNDS OF MUSIC With a theme of “Sounds” it is only natural that music would be incorporated into the March 17 A Moment In Time meeting. The Jamestown United Methodist Church Handbell Choir will present a special program of melodic tunes and singer Kathy Ledbetter will provide additional stirring sounds in song. A Moment In Time meetings are geared especially for people with dementia and their care partners. They provide an opportunity to relax and have fun with activities such as games, music, snacks, crafts and engaging conversation. This month’s presenting sponsor is BrightStar Care. The meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the church fellowship hall at Jamestown United Methodist Church, 403 East Main St. To make entry easier, all guests are asked to enter the church from the back, under the portico. Many students throughout Guilford County recently participated in a variety of activities that could serve as building blocks to becoming socially and emotionally successful adults. Emphasis was placed on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to help students learn how to get along with others, regulate their emotions, work through their problems and envision goals for the future. For the third year, schools were challenged to fit SEL into their curriculum with a contest to see how each did. The theme for this year’s contest was “Skills for Community,

children dressed in their school gear to show that success begins at Jes. Skills for Careers.” The goal was twofold — bring more awareness to SEL and tie it to traits and skills needed for future careers. For two years in a row, Jamestown Elementary School received a trophy for first place in the elementary school division. “The theme was very similar to that of last year,” said Raina Deno, a third grade teacher at Jamestown

Elementary and SEL coordinator who planned the week’s activities for that school. “We used several ideas that we used last year.” The school celebrated Spirit Week March 2-6, which focused on different activities to bring awareness of skills needed for a variety of careers. Town Council to have three meetings in two weeks By carol Brooks freelance writer cab1hp@gmail.com The current Jamestown Town Council has already scheduled several special meetings so far in 2026, but one scheduled for March 12 at 6 p.m. may be one of the most important, at least to residents. What is billed as a Town Hall Meeting will cover an update on the D.R. Horton project, now called the Kinsley subdivision, as well as a discussion with Jamestown’s legislative lobbyist about the upcoming legislative session. The Horton update will review the current state of the project, recent activity and the next steps. According to a Facebook post by the Town of Jamestown, the “Council will receive information from staff and ensure the project continues to move forward in accordance with adopted agreements, regulations and the Town’s development standards.” There has been some concern recently by eagle-eyed residents that one of the spec houses already constructed is on the site of a retention pond, according to plans submitted to the Town. Last year, the Town Council voted to hire a legislative lobbyist to work in the Town’s interest in the N.C. General Assembly. At the meeting, the lobbyist(s) will be on hand “to discuss the upcoming legislative session and identify priorities that support Jamestown’s long-term goals. These discussions help ensure the Town is well-represented and positioned to advocate effectively for our community.” One thing candidates for Town Council and

mayor in 2025 emphasized was transparency in government. Residents have also requested this. The meeting is scheduled to make certain the Town operates transparently, thoughtfully and forward-looking. The Town Hall Meeting in the Council Chambers at Town Hall is open to the public but there is no public comment period. Town Hall is located at 301 E. Regular monthly meeting The March 17 Jamestown Council meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. The Council will hear a presentation regarding the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority Water and Wastewater Regionalization Study by Greg Flory, PTRWA executive director. There will also be a public hearing for a rezoning request for properties located at 207, 209, 301 from Main Street (MS) and at 305 West Main Street from Commercial/Main Street Transitional (C/MST) to Conditional Zoning-Residential/ Main Street Transitional (CZ-R/MST). This meeting will also be available on YouTube. Special budget meeting The Council will hold its second meeting to discuss the 2026-27 fiscal year budget on March 19 at 10 a.m. in the Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.

The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee held its first meeting since July 7, 2025, on March 2. Perhaps appropriately, the meeting was held at Jamestown Park Clubhouse. The committee elected Phyllis Bridges to continue as chair and Lamar Lee as vice-chair. All of the P&R support staff were present to give updates and reports. Parks & Recreation Director Scott Coakley bragged on the Jamestown Park crew. “These guys — lady and gentlemen — have been doing a lot of work putting in the time and making a lot of changes,” he said. “They don’t get to come to these meetings very often so it’s great to get them all here tonight so they can talk about their needs and things that [they’ve done]. “I don’t get a chance to brag on them as much as I’d like. They were here pushing snow in the parking lot, sidewalks and helping Public Services scrape roads. “During the snow, when we had all that weather, people think there’s nothing to do on a golf course but we spent see P&r, paGe 3

Sometimes events happen that we are not aware of, even those nearby. One such event was the Battle of Guilford Courthouse near Greensboro that occurred March 15, 1781, during the Revolutionary War. The battle only lasted 90 minutes, and American troops lost, but it was a major turning point in the action. Even though he lost the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, thanks to the actions of American Continental Army Gen. Nathanael Greene in severely reduc-

GTCC police force becomes first in North Carolina to earn top accreditation Press release Guilford Technical Community College’s police department recently became the first community college police department in North Carolina to be accredited by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation (NCLEA) program. Department of Insurance announced Wednesday. Jeffrey Martin Webster of Teague Drive, the owner of Webster Insurance & Associates, is accused of accepting premium payments between February 2024 and October 2025 from a number of automobile sales companies in Randolph, Davidson, Guilford, Forsyth and Yadkin counties and forging certificates of liability insurance for them without forwarding the premium payments to the insurance company. Webster was arrested on Feb. 27 and charged with embezzlement by an insurance producer, 18 counts of common law forgery and 18 counts of common law uttering, all felonies. He was released later the same day after posting $60,000 secured bond. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey encourages North Carolinians to help keep insurance premiums low by reporting suspicious fraud. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Causey said. “It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums.” Anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. These were arranged in a quilt format where all could see. The librarian created a display of books about careers and personal growth. “We did something new for the staff this year,” Deno said. “They had different SEL challenges.” One challenge was to select a career choice they would have considered if not a teacher. A self-awareness day had them write three character traits that best described them and another challenge was to create a book title about their life — “If your life was a book, what would the title be?” Deno acknowledged that some of the titles were very creative. Morning announcements included poems, songs and information about careers all focused on the SEL theme. The guidance counselor also taught deep breathing techniques to help staff and students relax during their busy days of work and study. Although JES was among the top three finalists in the elementary division of the SEL contest, they did not take first place this year. That designa-

Wednesday was career day with students dressing in something that represented a job they might like to have. “Many of the younger students had on costumes, such as doctors, nurses, police officers or fire fighters,” Deno said. “The upper grades chose careers such as baker, construction worker, cowboy and librarian. One boy dressed as a FBI agent, all in black with a badge showing his position. He even had handcuffs attached to his belt loop.” On Thursday, students wore clothing in school colors or that displayed the school logo to indicate that success begins at Jamestown Elementary School. Friday saw many in pajamas, an encouragement for students to follow their dreams. Deno created posters, each representing a different profession. Every class got one. It was then the class’ responsibility to color it and surround the picture with traits that would be needed for that career. These were hung on classroom

tion went to Sedgefield Elementary School. Other winners were Northeast Guilford Middle School and James B. Dudley High School. Herbin-Metz Education Center was recognized in the specialty category. “We received lots of submissions,” said Ronnie Armstrong, SEL specialist at Guilford County Schools. “It was an extremely tough decision and each finalist school hosted an amazing SEL Day/Week celebration.” Other finalists included Millis Road Elementary, Brown Summit Middle, Welborn Academy, Southwest Guilford High School, STEM Early College at N.C. A&T, Doris Henderson Newcomers and Sylvia Mendez Newcomers. “Even though we didn’t bring home the SEL trophy again this year, our school community still came out on top,” Deno said. “Our students had fun exploring different professions and thinking about the character traits and skills needed to succeed in them. “Our staff also learned more about one another as we worked through SEL challenges focused on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship skills. “Social Emotional Learning is such an important part of our growth as humans, we are winners regardless of whether we receive a trophy or not.”

From the front Blaney’s hard road to Phoenix winners circle By Russell Schmidt Racin' with Russ Ryan Blaney started well enough in Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup race, but two bad pit stops for tire issues forced him to the back, only to battle to the front and win his 18th series checkers. A bright sunny Phoenix day greeted race fans and drivers alike as Joey Logano led the opening 46 laps as teammate Blaney grabbed the lead next and won the stage. On to stage two where a multi-car incident occurred on lap 104 when Daniel Suarez, Chase Elliott and Josh Berry tangled, yet all continued. Christopher Bell entered the fray with a strong Toyota by winning the second stage with Denny Hamlin nearby. At this point, the race got serious with multiple cautions, in fact, 12 of them for a whopping 86 laps of yellow! There were several large incidents, but the big one of the day would have to be the lap 255 situation when seven cars mashed together, including Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott, Logano and Shane van Gisbergen among them. Overall, more than half the field left the race track on a wrecker or rollback to the pits for repairs. The final laps saw Blaney work hard

Sections of the cart path were resurfaced with asphalt. They painted the clubhouse interior and constructed a storm shelter on the golf course to enhance safety. Lumber for the storm shelter is from trees that fell last year on the course. Coakley had the trees milled down, saving the Town money. Town Manager Matthew Johnson said the Town hopes to turn more downed trees into lumber for use around the town. The Town is using a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant for the new playground, which is almost complete. Left to be done is the dog park, volleyball court and sidewalk connections. The Town will ask for an extension to the grant to complete the project. Permitting for two new shelters at the playground are holding things up, he added. The accessibility for Parks (AFP) grant is completed. “Don’t let Scott sell himself short,” said Golf Pro Marcy Newton. “Without him I couldn’t have done all these changes. “There were a lot of changes last year, very large changes.” New golf carts, went from Easy Go to Yamaha which has longer-lasting lithium batteries. vation Fund (LWCF) for $589,000 plus a matching amount from the Town,” May said. “The Park opened 52 years ago and needs updating.” May said they want to re-do the bunkers (sand traps), which do not drain well – if at all, and rework some of the tee complexes, making certain they are aimed correctly. May said the bunkers have gotten smaller over the years, perhaps by 2-3 feet. Life expectancy for bunkers and tees are 15-20 years each. “To my knowledge the bunkers have never been done,” May said. The Town is asking for a new LWCF grant for $500,000 with the Town matching that amount. Coakley added that $300,000 is budgeted in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) both this year and next year, to cover the work. He added one side of the course at a time might be shut down for the work. P&R Superintendent Jeff Goard said the dog park will be completed before the volleyball court. The Town will use the Accessible Parks (AP) grant for new bathrooms. “Music in the Park is almost [scheduled],” Goard said. There will be five events. “Spring ball field rentals started March 2,” he said. Several groups are already using the fields. The Town took over maintenance and use of the fields at Jamestown Elementary last year and plans to rent those out. There are lights on those fields for night play. “We’ll probably double our best year ever on the soccer fields,” Coakley added. Goard mentioned the Girl Scout Flag Retirement Drop Box project that will be constructed by Lacy Skelton at Wrenn-Miller Park. The Town Council approved the project in February. Cornwallis and Greene had been engaged in battles for several months in North and South Carolina, so they were aware of each other’s strategies, strengths and weaknesses. Greene’s troops were made up of members of the Continental Army as well as a militia who wanted freedom from Great Britain. When the war ended, many just left fighting for their regular jobs as farmers. Cornwallis’ win at Guilford Courthouse was called a Pyrrhic victory because even though he won, it led to his downfall. A Pyrrhic victory is a win that comes at such a significant cost to the victor that it is almost equivalent to defeat. The term originates from King Pyrrhus of Epirus, who suffered heavy losses in battles against the Romans despite winning. It was a victory within a defeat. In an address before the Tennessee Division of the Sons of the American Revolution on March 15, 1901, J.B. Killebrew wrote: “Cornwallis supposedly said that he should ever consider it as the greatest honor of his life to have been placed at the head of so gallant an army. … Though nominally, the battle of Guilford Court House was a victory for Cornwallis, it proved by after events to be the most terrible calamity that had happened to him during the war. He never recovered from it. His army was demoralized. … The so-called defeat of Greene was the main factor in terminating the war and establishing the liberties of the American people.” Prior to the battle, encamped for a time near Deep River Friends Meeting, Cornwallis’ men were hungry and many had been lost through disease, desertion or death. It is no wonder some of the soldiers raided the home and springhouse from the home of George and Judith Mendenhall about two miles away along Penny Road. One soldier tried to take the family’s last milk cow but Judith went after the soldier and retrieved it. A marker on West Main Street in Jamestown near the river bridge commemorates Cornwallis’ stay in the area. Apparently, Gen. Greene had planned to attack Cornwallis at this camp on Deep River. Greene’s own

writings confirm this, according to remarks made several years ago by Tom Baker, then staff historian at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. However, Cornwallis moved on the Courthouse before Greene had a chance to attack. Cornwallis did not know how many men Greene had nor did he know the terrain or other intelligence about Greene. Cornwallis had marched hundreds of miles from his latest victory at Camden, S.C., but had driven his army to rags and hunger, according to John Buchanan in his book “The Road to Guilford Courthouse: The American Revolution in the Carolinas.” Greene appeared itching to battle with Cornwallis. “I am not without hopes of ruining Lord Cornwallis, if he persists in his mad scheme of pushing through the Country,” Greene wrote. The National Park Service website offered this insight into the future of the conflicts: “Many years after the war Sir Henry Clinton, the British Commander in Chief during the Southern Campaign, referred to the battle of Kings Mountain as ‘an Event which was immediately productive of the worst Consequences to the King’s affairs in South Carolina, and unhappily proved the first Link of a Chain of Evils that followed each other in regular Succession until they at last ended in the total loss of America’.” “King’s Mountain, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse were the ‘chain of evils’ that shifted the tide of war in the south and made the shocking victory at Yorktown possible. In October 1780, a loyalist force under Major Patrick Ferguson was annihilated at the Battle of Kings Mountain. This was a major blow to British recruiting efforts, and left Cornwallis’ army vulnerable to threats from the western backcountry.” It took two more years after Cornwallis’ surrender for the war to officially come to a close. Today The battleground at Guilford Courthouse was preserved by individuals and groups like the Guilford Battleground Company before the National Park Service established Guilford Courthouse National Military Park on March 2, 1917. The landscape encompasses the core of the battlefield where the two armies

met in one of the major Southern Campaign battles of the Revolutionary War. The Park is located at 2332 New Garden Road in Greensboro. The phone number is 336-288-1776. Nearby Country Park (3905 Nathanael Green Dr.) was also part of the original battlefield. Other parts of the battle took place on portions of land scattered along a path from Lawndale Drive east along what is now New Garden Road.

Events 2026 Battle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment March 14-15 The Battle of Guilford Courthouse Reenactment will take place on March 14 and 15 at 2 p.m. each day at the park. Many events will take place for children and cultural events for adults. 18th century Colonial dancing will be at the Visitors Center Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Artillery demonstration will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Living history reenactors and vendors will be set up in the Sutlers’ Camp on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for visitors to experience a bit of history, and purchase food and goods from that time period. Battle reenactment will take place at Country Park at 2 p.m. along with the Guilford Militia, who will be encamped at Country Park. The first annual Descendants of Battle of Guilford Courthouse Veterans Symposium will be March 14 at 10 a.m. in the Visitors Center. The event is free. While 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence, the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse will be celebrated on March 15, 2031. Every Saturday in March guest speakers will bring more light to the Battleground’s history. There are no big reenactments or activities scheduled for July 4 this year. The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department along with the Guilford Battleground Company sponsors the annual Reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse at Greensboro Country Park every March.

Development in the dark

On Thursday, March 12, Jamestown’s Council is having a special meeting that includes a review of the D.R. Horton development currently underway on the company’s 467-acre plot, which was annexed to Jamestown after a contentious, yearlong public hearing that ended January 17, 2023. At that time, Jamestown’s Council also approved a Development Agreement with D.R. Horton, which included a process both for regular review and, as necessary, amendment. But in early February, it was discovered that 2023 Development Agreement was amended nearly a year ago, on April 8, 2025. The amended agreement adds a thirteenth article and several subsections to other twelve articles from the original. Who signed the Amended Development Agreement on behalf of Jamestown? Town Manager Matthew Johnson, Assistant Town Manager Katie M. Weiner, Town Attorney Elizabeth M. Koonce, Finance Director Faith Wilson, and then Mayor Lynn Montgomery. Were there any Council agenda items, meetings, or public hearings about amending the original Development Agreement? No. Did Jamestown’s Council even know about the amended agreement? As of this writing, they have not said. I asked them a month ago. The reason the Amended Development Agreement was discovered only now is because in December, 2025, D.R. Horton started pouring foundations and building houses. What was supposed to keep D.R. Horton from proceeding with construction was official certification of the company’s site development plan. In particular, the plan had to comply with state ordinances for Randleman Reservoir, a source of drinking water for Jamestown and several other communities in the Piedmont Triad. State lawmakers had made the Randleman Reservoir

rules for environmental and public health reasons, protecting the reservoir’s watershed through several means, including limiting density of housing developments. All of D.R. Horton’s property in Jamestown — as is all of Jamestown itself — is subject to the Randleman Reservoir rules. Our town’s approximately 3,500 residents are spread over 3 square miles. D.R. Horton wants to put up 1000 homes and 500 apartments on its property, potentially doubling Jamestown’s population on 467 acres, which is approximately 0.7 square miles. Concerns over that desired density was one reason the year-long public hearing was so contentious: residents are already concerned about the quality of water coming from Randleman Reservoir, and the high density development could make it worse. Jamestown’s all-volunteer Planning Board was particularly concerned about the Randleman Reservoir rules, bringing it up in a public meeting on January 9, 2023, a week before Jamestown’s Council approved the original Development Agreement. But Tom Terrell, Jamestown’s hired land-use attorney, assured the Planning Board at the time that “There is no flexibility in environmental protections other than a greater protection… and I can assure that 100% of what’s required — Randleman Lake regulations — will have to be followed.” Whether the Randleman Reservoir rules are being followed, however, is in doubt. That’s because on December 5, 2025, the Town Planner José Colón attested to D.R. Horton’s compliance with the watershed rules signing an official Plat Map that on December 5, 2025, the Planning Board met to give “final approval.” But there’s no public record that Jamestown’s Planning Board ever met on December 5, 2025. In fact, there are no public records of Planning Board agenda items, meetings, or public hearings about D.R. Horton’s

Plat Map happened at any time — at all — in 2025. Since December, D.R. Horton has wasted no time in starting construction, pouring a dozen or so foundations and erecting over a half-dozen houses so far, with work increasing in speed. But the company is doing this work based on what appears to be an invalid Plat Map and site development plan that, in turn, references and is based on what appears to be an invalid (2025) Amended Development Agreement. But questions put to all public officials — including whether Council even knew the “Technical Review Committee” approved changes — remain unanswered. Further, public records requests have all been referred to Town Attorney Koonce, who responded with an email sent February 19 with an agenda for the March 12 meeting, suggesting answers were forthcoming only then. She has not responded further. To see the original and amended agreements, as well as the plat map signed 12/5/2025 — only after which D.R. The 2023 Original Agreement is found under Book: 8697 and Page: 2413. To see the plat map signed by the Town Planner referencing “final approval” by the Planning Board over the Randleman Reservoir watershed rules, change the Book Type to Plat Book then go to Book: 220 Page: 17. Fellow citizens of Jamestown, I hope to see you at the March 12 meeting. That said, we — the public — will only be able to bear witness. So, to ask the important questions, I’m counting especially on our newly elected representatives, those who took office only in late December after all this happened. Kudos to you for caring and wanting to make the world better. Pets, livestock, wildlife and animals used for testing all deserve consideration and humane treatment. The first thing to do is get more people on your side. Talk to your parents about how you feel and how you want to take meaningful action to help animals. Tell your friends. Talk to your teachers. Some may want to help right away, but others may not seem

interested or even be against certain kinds of animal welfare. Expect that you’ll get a little pushback from some people, and don’t give up. Second, educate the people in your life. Your voice is a powerful asset in advocating for animal rights. Knowledge is also essential. Pick one animal rights issue in your town or state, learn about it, and tell your family and friends what you’ve learned. Third, get involved with groups that actively promote animal welfare. (You’ll need your parents’ support and permission.) Help with a cleanup, join a peaceful rally, volunteer at a local shelter or write a letter to your local congressperson. These small acts add up to big results that get legislation passed, raise awareness and directly help all kinds of animals.

The disgraceful ravings of Candace Owens By rich lowry the rich lowry column Joe McCarthy was famously undone by the rhetorical questions at a 1954 congressional hearing: “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?” If the same queries were directed to Candace Owens at such a forum, she’d sail on unperturbed -- since she has no idea what “decency” means. The conspiratorial podcaster has embarked on an investigative series on Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk. In this context, “investigative series” means a loosely stitched together collection of sewerish falsehoods and innuendo smearing Erika Kirk. Perhaps Owens can follow up with a franchise devoted to sullying the reputations of the widows of assassinated husbands throughout U.S. history. Are we sure that Mary Todd Lincoln was as innocent as she seemed? Didn’t Jackie Kennedy act kind of weird in Dallas? What did Ida Saxton McKinley know and when did she know it? The narrative and commercial logic always suggested that this is where Owens was headed. It didn’t make any sense to libel TPUSA as being connected to the murder of its leader and founder -- as Owens has for months now -- without implicating its new leader, Erika Kirk. And, as the shock value of her anti-TPUSA campaign wore off, Owens had to stoke outrage and interest anew with something even more perverse. And what is more demented than portraying the wife of the victim of a shocking assassination as a black widow? Whereas most of have seen in Erika Kirk a Christian woman bearing up under an intolerable burden and stunningly forgiving the alleged murderer of her husband, Owens purports to see Clytemnestra, the mythical Greek figure who betrayed her husband Agamemnon upon his return from the Trojan War. The title of her series is “Bride of Charlie.” Get it? Like the “Bride of Frankenstein.” As a so-called investigator, Candace Owens is like Perry Mason if the fictional attorney had been a schizophrenic high on crack. Her method is to pile will-o’-the-

wisp connections one on top of another, often buttressed by flagrant factual mistakes, and insist that if she’s debunked, it just shows how she must be on the right track. Her mantra is that “we don’t know-know, but we know” -in other words, her malicious, irrational intuitions are superior to actual knowledge backed by facts. She now says that “Erika Kirk should be dragged into a police precinct for questioning,” and anyone who disagrees is “a full-blown fraud.” According to Owens, “the amount of evidence that is now piling up, I would say, against Erika Kirk, is almost akin to an NBC Dateline episode.” Usually, conspiracy theories spring up around assassinations that are hard to fathom or have some ambiguity about them. It is clear that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing JFK, but it’s understandable that there have been questions about the event. It is the depraved achievement of Candace Owens to make a bonkers true crime drama, with all sorts of mysteries and twists, out of an open-and-shut murder case. Kirk’s accused killer, Tyler Robinson, had a motive, left a trail of damning evidence and confessed to multiple people. To dismiss all this and call for Erika Kirk to be frogmarched into a police station is so mad it makes Owens’ conviction that both the moon landing and dinosaurs are fake look well-grounded by comparison. It is a symptom of our time that such malevolent buffoonery is rewarded with a huge audience. It is impossible to discredit Owens because she is not in the credibility business to begin with. In the attention economy, denunciations are just as useful as praise, especially if a media figure is posing as a brave truth-teller -- so brave that, in this case, she’s willing to drag through the mud a mother of two who saw her beloved husband murdered less than six months ago. It’s not just that decency is not necessary in the Candace Owens business model, it would be an obstacle.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with frugal Irish stout bread and pub cheese By Patti diamoNd diVas on a dime

St. Patrick’s Day always invites celebration, but celebration doesn’t have to be expensive. Some of the most satisfying traditions begin with humble ordinary ingredients transformed into something extraordinary. A warm loaf of beer bread, paired with a rich Irish cheddar pub cheese, captures that spirit perfectly. It’s simple, inexpensive and yet feels downright luxurious. Guinness, Ireland’s iconic stout, brings complex malt flavor and essential moisture to the dough, resulting in a tender crumb and a beautifully golden crust. Alongside the bread, a simple pub cheese spread made with Irish cheddar completes the occasion. Sharp, creamy and deeply savory, it transforms everyday snacks into a proper pub experience right in your own kitchen. This is frugal cooking at its best. A couple of bottles of stout, a chunk of good cheddar and pantry staples create something worthy of celebration without overspending. While Guinness offers traditional flavor, any stout beer will work well, and any sharp cheddar can be used in place of Irish cheddar with excellent results. Use what suits your budget. IRISH STOUT OAT BREAD Yield: 1 loaf Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes 1 cup oats, divided + 1 tablespoon fortopping 2 1/2 cups AP flour, or whole wheat flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 2/3 cup dark brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 12 ounces Irish stout beer, such as Guinness

In a mini food processor, blitz 1/2 cup of oats to make oat flour. In a mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, regular flour, baking powder, remaining 1/2 cup oats, brown sugar and salt. Slowly pour in the stout, stirring gently, until just combined. Don’t overmix. The batter will be thick. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of oats. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the loaf is golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then remove and transfer to a rack to cool before slicing (or at least try).

IRISH PUB CHEESE Yield: 8 servings Total Time: 30 minutes 8 ounces Irish cheddar cheese or other cheddar, shredded 2 ounces cream cheese 1 small clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard, Dijon or grainy 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper Preheat the oven to 350 F degrees. 1 to 3 tablespoons Irish stout beer

Shred the cheese and place it in a mini food processor. Add the remaining ingredients and process until smooth and creamy. Begin with a small amount of stout, then adjust to your preferred consistency. The spread should be soft, rich and easily spreadable. Transfer to a small bowl or jar and allow to stand at room temperature for about 15 minutes before serving. Finish with a sprinkle of smoked paprika for color and flavor. Serve alongside warm slices of beer bread for the full pub experience at home. This simple combination is proof that celebration doesn’t depend on extravagance, only intention.
