SANGAM

AN ICONIC DESTINATION, MAHABALIPURAM

With the goal of creating awareness towards the heritage and the cultural landscape of mahabalipuram, the design intent focuses on – a confluence in geography and people, relationship between the built and the unbuilt, cultural landscape integration. Taking the imageability of mahabalipuram and the climatic adverse effects on the monuments, the area of intervention has been selected.

On a macro level, the narrative and the concept follow - re-iterating the cultural landscape of mahabalipuram, decoding and application of elements mahabalipuram, interpretation through site experience. Breaking the boundaries of gallery experience through interpretation and landscape integration call for people to experience the site and landscape of mahabalipuram as part of their journey.

The project is made to respect the history and landscape of Mahabalipuram while creating a new destination for recreation and learning. On a micro level the watch tower would function as a subtle way-finding system that marks the way in, out and around the natural landscape.

AGARAM

AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN KEELADI, MADURAI

The proposed project is for a history museum dealing majorly with the Sangam era. With the discovery and findings about the ancient urban Civilization in Keezhadi , the location has seen many enthusiasts and has created awareness among many other. The Museum explores more on its form as a whole and its response to site. The concepts of volume and lighting and their importance in relation to display areas have been exploited to create a volume that would provide different experiences at every visit.

Through massing and variation in scale the galleries are segregated in volumes and function. The Volumes are broken down by introducing transparancy via skylights. Further the central promenade draws emphasis to path and destination.

INCLINE

A PROPOSED RESIDENCE FOR DIRECTOR OF HISTORY MUSEUM IN MADURAI, INDIA

Located to the West of ‘Agaram’ in Madurai - the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, the residence is holistically conceptualised considering the cultural context, heritage and blurring the boundaries between built and unbuilt. Considered as an extension of the ‘Agaram’ archaeological museum, the residence is highly influenced by the massing and regulating lines that has been used in the conceptualisation of the museum.

Further, considering the rich culture and heritage associated with Madurai, the design incorporated spaces and elements and materials associated with the local architecture to reflect the regional context. It aims to create a residence that is deeply rooted in its cultural identity, celebrating local heritage.

‘Incline’ encompasses articulated spatial organisation that uses courtyards, corridors, large sliding glass doors and terraces that allow seamless transition between the interior and exterior, enhancing the sense of openness and connection to nature.

‘Incline’ utilises evaporative cooling, daylit spaces, well shaded and well ventilated interiors through projected shaded balconies, terraces and jaali facade.

HOSUR BUS STAND

REDEVELOPMENT OF BUS STAND TO ENHANCE TRANSIT

Considered to be an identity of Hosur, the hosur bus stand embodies the characteristic image of the city. The expansion and development of the town called for integrated and sustainable urban space. The redevelopment of the bus stand addresses the idea of “Clean - Safe - Healthy” city. Prioritizing the convenience, safety, and comfort of commuters, the bus stand has been reimagined outside its boundaries by expanding the areas of intervention towards the edges as well to promote community engagement. Integration of the edges has helped in harmonizing the bus stand with its surrounding urban context and thus reflecting the local culture and the vibrancy of Hosur

Inward facing eateries and stores creating communal spaces

Plaza as an extension of the street with the multi-level parking

Eateries that remain open all day and night

Commercial complex that also dubs as a street extension

Amphitheatre at the terrace for the people of the community to use

From morning till night, the bus stand remains as a space that satisfies not only the city’s infrastructure needs but also the social needs. The edges - along the highway, the street market and the residential settlement are treated to create a communal interface between the physical infrastructure and people.

The basic element is a twisted square. Two of these are connected vertex to vertex. Further one pair is inserted inside another connecting at the centre points of each edge to form the basic unit of the aggregate. The basic units are connected vertex to vertex in an alternate pattern to form the final aggregate.
