Congratulations on picking up your Yellowhead County Summer Explorer Passport. This is your guide for exploring all the great spots in the Alberta Northern Rockies and other great areas throughout the Yellowhead County area! Celebrate this amazing area by visiting as many of these great points of interest listed in this guide as you can and enter to win with each spot you visit! And remember to keep an eye out for Sasky da Sasquatch, he’ll be visiting various locations and events throughout the summer across Yellowhead County reminding everyone to 'Not Leave a Trace!" Get out there, have some fun, and win some great prizes! The contest runs from MAY to SEPTEMBER. Go to our Facebook and Instagram pages often for monthly prizes and more! Yellowhead County would like to remind you that, although these places are open to the public, it is advised that anyone visiting these areas take necessary precautions. Wildlife, abrupt weather changes, and other natural and industry related factors can affect your travel and safety when visiting these locations. Some of these areas are remote and have limited amenities including food, cellular service, shelter, and fuel. Use proper maps and have adequate supplies on hand in the case of an emergency.

4. Take
a selfie or just a photo of the location.

your photos and a short description of each location you visit on Instagram and tag:

You’ll receive one entry into the draw for each photo submitted – so submit your photos often! west region
Northern Rockies & Foothills From west of Edson to the border of the Jasper Park down to the Northern Rockies foothills in the beautiful and historic Coal Branch area. Explore Whitehorse Wildland Park and the Cardinal Divide and then venture up to Willmore Wilderness Park and the Big Berland River area. Brule Park Located within the County’s most western Hamlet, snuggled into the Alberta Rocky Northern Mountains, the Brule Community Park has a brand new playground, outhouse facilities, and the newly created Brule Bike Park – one of the many great places to ride your bike in Yellowhead County. The small but extremely fun bike park boasts a dirt pump track, dirt trails and wooden-built features.
Brule Cemetery - Located just outside of the hamlet is the old cemetery that dates back to the early 1900s. Although no longer active, the Brule cemetery recently received major restoration with efforts made to create markers for everyone buried there, although some markers were unable to be identified.
Athabasca Lookout – Located near the Nordic Lookout Centre in the south end of William A. Switzer Provincial Park, the Athabasca SUMMER EXPLORER

Lookout Trails is a 1 km moderate hike with a great payoff! The view from the lookout center is awe-inspiring – one can see forever! Hike back down the same way or take the ridge trail for 3 km which descends into Joachim Valley Trail with another 2.5 km to Jarvis Lake Campground.

the Brule area. There is information on early explorers to the area, historically relevant sites, and geographical landmarks such as the nearby dunes and waterfalls.
Solomon Crk. Athabasca River Access – The new Solomon Creek Trailhead
Staging Area near Brule is a great place to start a river adventure to Hinton (2-4 hrs) on the Athabasca River, the longest river in Yellowhead County and 14th longest in Canada. Be sure to have arrangements to be picked up after your trip or look at taking a guided river rafting tour who offer a range of tour types.
Mountain Park Cemetery – It's now
a ghost town, but Mountain Park used to be a thriving community of over 1000 people. As the first mine on the western side of the Coal Branch Railway, Mountain Park was the highest elevation point in Canada-over 6200 feet and is the highest cemetery in Canada and the entire British Commonwealth! The cemetery is still kept up today and represents a wonderful piece of our heritage.

YELLOWHEAD COUNTY bought by local photographer and filmmaker, William "Flash" Shewchuck. The building served as a studio for Flash's photography work, including wedding, community and nature photography which was followed by his experimentation with motion picture filmmaking. *Currently, there is food, lodging and propane in Cadomin, but no gas station. Make sure to gas up in Hinton or Edson.
Whitehorse Wildland Campground & Staging Area - The Whitehorse Creek Campground is a medium-sized campground located
Robb Gazebo - As another old min-
ing town in the Coal Branch, many of the old mine buildings from the hamlet of Robb and other communities along the coal branch, are still located in Robb. This beautiful little hamlet is settled comfortably among the hills and trees with a strong sense of community support and pride from its residents.
Obed Lake - This deep lake has
Brown Trout and piles of Perch. Located halfway between Edson and Hinton, Obed Lake is an excellent place to practice canoe and kayak skills. And after a little fishing, one can sit back and relax around the fire, as spots for day or overnight camping are located just off the lake.
Emerson Lake & Campground
adjacent to the Whitehorse Creek and near the confluence of Whitehorse Creek and the McLeod River. Fishing (for rainbow trout, eastern brook trout, whitefish, and bull trout), hiking, and horseback riding in the newly created Whitehorse Wildland Park are all popular recreational activities.
Coal Branch Hotel - As a boarding
house established in the 1940s, it provided lodgings for the workers of the local Bryan Mountain Mine. The boarding house was later purchased in the 1970s and renovated into a hotel.

- The five remote lakes that make up Emerson Lakes are huddled together, resulting in a spectacular blue-green view and are a hiker’s dream. With lakeside day-use areas and camping stalls just feet from the lake, this is one place definitely worth the drive. Also, check out the nearby Sculpture Trail to see the amazing hoodoos in Sundance Provincial Park.

Lakes, Rivers and Trails The Edson area includes numerous campgrounds, a great selection of easily accessible ponds and lakes for fishing and boating, and the McLeod River meanders across the whole region – great for short or longer river trips. There are also several great ATV and mountain biking trails in the area. Marlboro Smoke Stack - Check out this still standing factory artifact that is taller than NYC’s Statue of Liberty (statue only). The Marlboro Concrete Plant was opened in 1913 and so named because of the abundance of marl, the mineral-rich mud used in the production of concrete. The plant closed in 1931, and the remaining structures and chimney were left to degrade over time.

Willmore Park Trails, Campground & Bike Park - Where else can you bike, camp, hike, swim and paddle all in one spot! Willmore Park offers an extensive multiple-use trail system, scenic views, day use, group use, overnight and backcountry camping facilities. Willmore Park is home to Edson Cycling Association, a

east of Edson, just past Bear Lake, is this sparkling gem of a place. For active nature lovers and fishermen alike who enjoy a peaceful, relaxing, secluded area it's the place to visit. Consisting of 16 campsites, two day-use sites, a boat dock, and many other amenities one can truly enjoy a superb time at this county park!

museum located north of Peers has been open seasonally to the public since 1988 for families to come out and explore some of our local history. Check out hundreds of old and antique tractors and other types of farm equipment up close and personal.

Starting from the Pembina River and continuing to the Peers area, this region has acres and acres of rolling farmland and wooded areas that makes for some great scenic locations. If you’re looking for locally grown products that represent some of the best products Alberta has to offer, look no further.

St. Vladmir's Russian Orthodox Church - St. Vladimir's Russian Or-
thodox Church is valued for its representation of Orthodox Church architecture adapted to the local, rural landscape. The church was part of a monastery built by Bishop Vitaly after he arrived in the Wildwood area in the 1950s. The church was originally a bunkhouse and later adapted with the design characteristics of Russian Orthodox Church architecture.
Park Court Ukrainian Baptist Church - The Ukrainian Baptist
Church, one of three churches built in the 1930s by the early community members, is an excellent example of prairie church architecture. The congregation, established in 1907 by arriving settlers, many of which were from Ukraine or of Ukrainian
descent, built the church with locally sourced materials, is an excellent example of the many early churches throughout Yellowhead County.
Pembina River Park Campground
- Scenic hiking trails, close river access, and a playground make this a favourite weekend spot. Tubing along the Pembina River is a great way to
spend a summer day, but make sure you get off at the Pembina River Park. You can bring your own tubes, but rentals are available from the nearby rental company who also offers parking, key lock, and shuttle services.

Your presence in the headwaters of the Athabasca watershed means that your actions may affect water supplies which are important to a large part of Alberta’s population.
