If you run a business that depends on local customers, whether that’s a plumber in Stafford or a solicitor in Stoke-on-Trent, your Google reviews sit closer to the centre of your search visibility than most people realise. This guide breaks down how reviews influence your rankings, which signals genuinely matter, and how to build a review profile that works for you.

Distance is simply how far your business is from the person searching, and it’s the one factor you can’t influence directly. Prominence is the interesting one. It covers backlinks, mentions across the web and, above all, the number and quality of reviews you have. Google’s own guidance states that more reviews and positive ratings can help your business rank locally.

Industry research backs this up: Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, compiled from dozens of local SEO experts, put review signals at around a fifth of total local pack ranking weight, second only to Google Business Profile signals themselves.

Responding to reviews, positive and negative, signals that your business is active and engaged. It also gives you a second chance to add useful context. You don’t need a polished response for every five-star review, a short, genuine thank you is enough. For negative reviews, a calm, specific reply that addresses the actual issue does more for your credibility than the review itself does damage. Google explicitly encourages business owners to manage and respond to reviews as part of good profile management.

Google scans the text of your reviews for relevant terms and sometimes displays short snippets, known as local justifications, directly in the search results to explain why your business matches what someone’s looking for. If customers naturally mention the specific services you offer or what set your business apart, that content works in your favour. You can’t script this without it looking fake, and you shouldn’t try, but a simple “what did you have done today?” when asking for a review often prompts more useful detail than a generic request.

How To Get More Google Reviews, Without Breaking Google’s Rules The most effective way to get more reviews is also the simplest: ask happy customers directly, at the right moment, and make it as easy as possible for them to leave one.
