The project was to design a 60 thousand seaters stadium for the coming olympic games in Tokyo, Japan 2028. The main structure of the stadium is made of catenary shell which balanced out by the tension structure of the membrane roof.

There are 18 entrances into the stadium via tunnels. Stadium control room, VIP lounges and rooms are located at level 4 where the access are from the ground level. There are two vehicular entrances to the field which consist of ramps on each side of the stadium.

This section shows the part of the basement that is being used as shopping mall and the lightwell from the opening of the stadium between the tunnels.

There is access to the level 4 and above from the ground level via lift and cores.

The carpark is located at basement 3.

While sectionally, the stadium is one continous piece of landscape, as seen from outside it is a unique stand-alone structure. The complexity of the structure requires long period of model making. In the picture above, a styrofoam mold made by cnc is used before a layer of plaster is applied.

The project was bridging the neighboring sport facilities as well looking at the residential areas to give them sense proud of the new stadium. The functions are divided based on the surrounding neighborhood to attract people to visit the stadium when it is not used for the olympic games.

The project was to design a mixed used residential building at Joo Chiat road. Surrounded by low rise residential housings and strip of conserved shophouses, the concept was to integrate new experience of living through organic approach of the building design.

The form was defined by the site plan, responding to the edges and reacting to the buildings around it. The shape was to increase exposure to the wind hence improving air circulation. Facade was designed to function as structure, shading for each unit. The organic shape takes form to minimise the material needed for the structure.

I am using revit to document the drawings of the floor plan, details, and sections. The shell was modeled through computation coding in Rhino and exported for Revit use.

The floor plans are layered based on the functions where the residential units will receive sufficient amount of sunlight followed by circulation.

The axonometric diagram on the left shows hows the function works.

The units are catered to expanding families of various sizes. They stretch along the periphery of each of the floors. Each holes of the facade provides shading for the unit and also act as the structure for entire building.

The pieces to assemble the whole model was scripted using grasshopper and tagged accordingly. They were cut using laser cutter to ensure the accuracy of the shape.

For the units, the facade was 3D printed, attached by styrofoam strips and acrylic for the glass. There are three types of units depending on the location of the unit in the organic shape.

There is a unique interaction between the two functions at different levels. The shifting of floors adds to the playfullness of the functions and the areas and at the same time creating open shaded spaces, inviting people to explore the building.

The circulation is continuous from both entrances. The floor heights are different for each functions. There are double and triple volume spaces to mark the entrance, events, and cafe areas. The middle courtyard is visible from every parts of the building, thus providing easy wayfinding for people to navigate inside.

The spaces inside are designed to invite people to explore the exhibitions around the building. Interlacing of floorplates evokes their interest to find out the spaces above them. The rooftop garden is part of the circulation, to infuse the events with nature, as well as the inner courtyard. The staircases are more visible than the lift to invite people to take the stairs as part of their explorations.

The 1:100 model is made out of white foams and acrylic sheets, it can be divided into two to see the interior and spatial qualities of the inside.

The project asks for a design within a natural space in One North area. The actual conditions of the plot like slope, existing trees, close buildings framing the space, accessibility, close amenities, potential users, character of the different traffic roads, etc will be taken into account to design a building carefully designed and connected to its close environment. The project will develop strategies for dealing with an urban context but extremely natural at the same time, and explore how to combine in a whole design the required exterior and interior spaces.

Given the required programmes and limitations, considering the demographic and land use, I chose nestling within to be my concept driving the design of this building.

The building is nestling within the forest with the pillars standing from the forest floor being parts of the tree lines. The holes and voids are created based on the positions of the current trees.

The trees are becoming the walls and roof for this building, integrating nature with the activities.

The interlacing of different floor shape allowing the forest canopy to be part of the building’s ceiling and trees as the wall for the spaces. There is a play between open and concrete walls to integrate the nestling idea into the building.

sustainable urban centre section | concept

The aim of this project is to design a sustainable urban planning by considering the energy (wind, solar, irradiance, lightings) and urban concepts (walkability, programmes, context). The requirements was to achieve FAR (floor area ratio) of 7.0, mixed composition of residential, community, education, commerce and office.

The strategy was to create a main boulevard that connects the future MRT stations while having a shophouse-functioned buildings along it where commercial activities are happening at the first few floors. The slanted roof is designed for solar harvesting in terms of urban farming or solar panels. Residential buildings are located next to these functions.

digital design and fabrication generative casting | laser cutting | model making

The project is to explore different massing possibilities that can be uniquely made by concrete casting. The mold is prepared by multiple layer of laser cut greyboards. Each was arranged and marked according to the order by using grasshopper and C# programming.

The three options of the towers are generated with grasshopper. It takes a shape of the base, adding it to the next floor with simple rotation and scaling factors that we can parametrically control.

The task were to create joints, planar and 3D spatial joints using different machinaries.

They are CNC milling, water jet, and stress analyser. The 3D joint is designed to maintain the accuracy of the angles, simple assembly process, and minimal material requirements.

The circular shape allows various angles and can be produce in large scale.

DIfferent curve control systems 2014 Introduction to Computational Design

Given certain constraint, I was to design and build a 1:20 scale canopy structure in a given site. There are 4 entrances to the site and thw two wall structuresthat can be placed freely on the site. My design system was using grasshopper to control a gradation of transparency where visibility / light condition will shift as one moves around.

parametric design lamp holder | weaving assignment The assignment was to create a lamp holder for a light bulb. The holder would create interesting shadow patterns when the light is lighted up. The pictures on the right shows different variation of the weaving parameters by using grasshopper.

The ASED competition was to design a carport that is targetted to high-end consumer which explored geometry that is weird but structurally stable. My team won the fourth place, a merit award for this competition.

I participated in URA forgotten space competition. The idea was to be able to place modular units as filler space of the backlanes or park to make those area more usable and lifely.

climatic response The prevalent monsoon south and north winds in July and December respectively can reach a comfort-able 4m/s at the height level of the existing deck of the Sky Park. However, the existing planters around the wooden deck as well as the closed wall on the east of the Sky Park will buffer the winds considerably. The elevated platform was designed to work around these constraints, elevated above the planters and wrapping around the perimeter of the deck such that users can enjoy not only the unobstructed rooftop breeze, but also the urban vista.

BCA Greensparks competition calls for a renovation of a rooftop which has to be inviting for people to explore and get closer to the greeneries. For this competition, I was doing the 3D digital model and the renders.

Modular façade incorporates solar panels and planters that allow for the growth of trellis for shading purposes on the North-Western and South-Western facades of the Sky Park. These two facades are where there are no neighbouring walls present and thus, where the fierce afternoon sun will hit the strongest.
