THE CAUSE

Since 1994, Yee Hong has offered a continuum of culturally appropriate care to Chinese seniors and long-term care services to seniors from various cultural backgrounds, including Japanese, South Asian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Korean. Operating 805 long-term care home beds and a wide range of community support services, Yee Hong annually serves over 15,000 individuals across the Greater Toronto Area.

The fast-aging population in our communities means Yee Hong needs to expand its services and programs. Yee Hong is embarking on a capital campaign to build three new centres with a total of 800 beds in Scarborough, Markham and Mississauga in the next few years.

As a charitable non-profit organization, Yee Hong relies heavily on support from sponsors and community partners.

THE GALA

Combining philanthropy with the celebration of Lunar New Year, Dragon Ball has maintained its position as one of Toronto’s most anticipated events and the largest Lunar New Year celebration of its kind in North America for the last three decades. The gala offers sumptuous cuisines, spectacular entertainment and fabulous prizes, as well as a platform to bring culturally appropriate, dignified care to seniors and those of need to the forefront. Meeting our fundraising goal is critical to sustaining and expanding our services, which makes Dragon Ball Yee Hong’s most important fundraising event of the year.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Yee Hong,

It was truly exciting to welcome the Year of the Rabbit on Chinese New Year’s Eve at the 34th Yee Hong Dragon Ball. After two years of virtual galas during the pandemic, we were finally able to host our guests and supporters in person again.

Dragon Ball, the largest and most glamorous lunar new year celebration in Canada, is much more than a festive occasion. It has brought over $22 million in net contributions to Yee Hong, enabling us to create the largest non-profit geriatric care centre in Canada. Yee Hong delivers culturally appropriate long-term care (LTC) to 15,000 seniors annually, mostly from Asian Canadian communities including Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, and Japanese.

Organizing such a beautiful event like this is not easy. Under the capable hands of our President Stephen Siu, our amazing Foundation team and volunteers worked tirelessly preparing for the event. My sincere and heartfelt appreciation goes to all of them.

As a physician, I have seen many elderly patients benefitting from the services Yee Hong provides, from independent housing with recreation and supportive services to daycare and community kitchen meals on wheels to LTC and end-of-life care. I would like to pay tribute to the incredible Yee Hong team, our frontline and management colleagues under the leadership of our CEO Dr. San Ng, for caring our seniors with dedication and compassion.

Yee Hong’s vision includes expanding our in-home services, assisting other LTC homes in their planning, and helping our indigenous populations to create caring senior communities. Yee Hong has also established a private career college to train personal support workers, supplying much needed personnel to help care for our seniors at home and LTC facilities.

There is no mistaking that we are in a rapidly aging society. With over 8,000 seniors on the waiting list for Yee Hong, the wait can be as long as 10 years. The Ontario government has awarded Yee Hong new licenses to build three new LTC facilities in Toronto, Markham, and Mississauga, doubling our bed capacity to 1605.

However, construction of these new centres will cost almost $400 million, and we need to raise $80 million as our equity stake. I am pleased to announce that, with your generosity and support, we will be breaking ground for the first new centre in Scarborough this fall.

Please donate generously and help Yee Hong build new centres to benefit our seniors.

至今「龍宴」已是第34屆，是加拿大最盛大的農曆新年慶祝活 動。但這晚宴遠不止是節慶，更為頤康帶來了超過2,200萬元 的淨捐款，使我們能夠創建加拿大最大型的非牟利長者護理機 構，每年為超過15,000 名加拿大亞裔社群長者，包括華人、 南亞、菲律賓和日本裔，提供切合文化需要的照顧。

要籌辦這麼一個盛會真不容易。在總裁蕭顯揚的英明領導下， 基金會團隊和志願者們一直不辭勞苦爲「龍宴」盡心盡力。我 衷心感謝！

作為一名醫生，我親眼目睹了許多老年患者受益於頤康所提供 的服務，從附設康樂和支援服務的獨立住房，到日托活動和社 區送餐，以至長期護理和善終服務。我要藉此機會向出色的頤 康前線和管理層同事表示敬意，他們在頤康中心首席行政總監 伍倩文博士的領導下，以奉獻精神和同情心照顧我們的長者。

34th Annual Benefit Gala Returned Full House on Lunar New Year’s Eve

The Dragon Ball benefit gala for Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation made its long-awaited return in-person on Saturday, January 21, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The 34th annual gala was completely sold out, to the disappointment of some supporters who could not get a ticket.

This year’s Dragon Ball fell on the Lunar New Year’s Eve. The theme of the gala symbolized the rebirth of the Dragon, emerging from the pandemic stronger, smarter, and more powerful. The gala was an unforgettable evening with a fascinating lineup of activities and entertainment to celebrate the Dragon’s resilience and spirit when leaping forward into the Year of the Rabbit together with about 1,000 guests. Over $965,000 was raised in support of senior care at the four Yee Hong centres and the construction of three new long-term care homes.

頤康基金會第34屆「龍宴」於大年三十（1月21日）在大多倫多會展中心隆重舉行，千名善長和嘉賓重拾龍的華彩，在迎春接福之 際，借「巨龍重生」之勢，祝願疫後再展輝煌。

今屆「龍宴」在大家的翹首企盼中，得以重新恢復現場盛會的形式，晚宴門票更是提前售罄。『龍騰兔躍開新運，國泰年豐晉和平』 是為本次「龍宴」所題的對聯，激勵社會各界傳承龍之韌性，與頤康一起，以全新面貌迎接後疫情的衝擊。晚宴適逢大年三十，參加 善長仍非常踴躍，賓客數量亦恢復至疫情前水平。活動共籌得超過96萬元善款，用於支持頤康四家中心的長者服務及興建三家新的長 期護理中心。

The live auction conducted by former Toronto City Councillors Mike Layton and Gordon Cressy generated exciting bidding among guests for items, namely a diamond bracelet worth $18,500 donated by Royal de Versailles Jewellers; a pair of roundtrip business class tickets to any destination around the world that Air Canada flies; a hand-crafted luxury mattress from Hästens; and a dinner set for 10 at The Chef’s House at George Brown College.

A special draw was conducted at the gala. One lucky winner won a tour for 2 to Europe donated by Tian Bao Travel. The second prize winner took home a luxury backpack donated by Rimowa.

Active seniors and seniors with Parkinson’s disease and other chronic health conditions participating in the Yee Hong “I Can Dance” fitness program debuted at the gala to demonstrate the joy and benefits of dancing.

The attractive costumes and beautifully choreographed dance by Kulkat Entertainment highlighted the colours and atmospheres of seasonal transitions from Winter to Spring and Spring to Summer.

The pre-dinner grand reception with hors d’oeuvres prepared by a group of young, accomplished ChineseCanadian chefs tantalized the tastebuds of guests with their new concept of “from memories to creativity”.

Yee Hong is one of the largest not-for-profit senior care organizations in the country, offering a continuum of highquality, culturally appropriate care to Chinese seniors and long-term care services to seniors from various cultural backgrounds, including Japanese, South Asian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and Korean. Operating 805 longterm care home beds, a wide range of community support services, and a hospice residence, Yee Hong annually serves more than 15,000 individuals across the Greater Toronto Area. Yee Hong also builds seniors organization and system capacity through its advisory services, Private Personal Support Worker Career College, and research.

Breaking Ground SOON FOR NEW CENTRE

Canada’s population is aging. Over 8,000 seniors are waiting for a Yee Hong long-term care bed, and the wait time can be as long as 10 years, compared to the provincial average of 152 days. This incredible demand for our high quality, culturally-appropriate senior care will only grow in the future.

Yee Hong has responded by launching the “Love Gives” Capital Campaign to build three new long-term care centres in Scarborough, Markham and Mississauga. The new facilities will add 800 more beds, which will double our current capacity and shorten the wait time for essential geriatric care.

The ceremony to break ground for the new Finch Centre in Scarborough is scheduled for this fall.

The total construction cost for the new centres is estimated at million, and we must raise $80 million to kickstart the project. This is by far the largest and most ambitious charitable goal in the history of Canada’s Chinese community.

With the generous support from our dedicated donors and supporters, we are blessed to have raised $10 million for the Capital Campaign already, including the very generous contribution of $5 million from the Wu Si Chong Foundation.

We have formed a very strong Campaign Cabinet of 70 renowned leaders from the community, adding tremendous credibility to our cause.

In economic terms, the $80 million investment will bring in a total annual operating subsidy of $40 million from the provincial government, indexed to inflation, for perpetuity; and generate over 1,000 new permanent jobs. We need the total mobilization of our community to take on this challenge.

The Foundation : A Member of Yee Hong Family

Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation is an integral part of the Yee Hong family. Our mission to raise funds and handle communications for our sister Yee Hong organizations has not changed since our inception over thirty years ago.

While the long-term care services of Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care has always been our primary beneficiary, we have added numerous others in recent years, including Yee Hong’s Community and Professional Services, Yee Hong Peter K Kwok Hospice, and more. The Foundation’s successes ARE Yee Hong’s successes.

As we embark on our largest and most ambitious campaign ever, Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation will continue to follow accepted best practices for charitable fundraising work, including being a legally distinct organization from the caregiving side. This allows us to have a dedicated board that is focused specifically on our mission to raise money for Yee Hong.
