Of Darkness and Fissility

Reframing the Slate Landscape of Wales

5th Year Project (MArch) Diploma 17 - ‘Latent Territories’ with Theo Lalis and Dora Sweijd

Proposed Cultural Center in the Slate Landscape

An Enquiry into Placemaking within the Industrial Blemish... on Community, Environmental Externality, Didactic Landscapes

This projects aims to ‘build a clean slate’ between the ‘extractible’ and the non-extractible. In order to reclaim a local sense of place amidst the industrial blemish of North Wales, the project proposes a cultural building integrating photodocumentary practices as a public program. incite public contemplation on manmade land forms as a dire result of material extraction for the construction sector.

Building with waste slate at the disused Dinorwic Quarry

Experiencing lightness with darkness Slate as Material, Slate as part of the landscape The overall building emerges from the quarried land forms blurring the distinction between the slate tippings and the newly constructed roof. A statement of ‘waste vs resource’ through technical re-invention Sculptural ceiling forms to interiorised space with light wells and openings to the landscape The spaces encapsulate the material expression of slate through its traditional and innovative uses, translating ecoconsciousness of its material extraction into alternative techniques for construction. On site, the project seeks to create programmatic circularity between industrial and cultural landscapes, beyond grounds for picturesque romanticisation and industrial exploits

Caught between the dichotomized landscapes for extraction and consumption, the project proposes a film center as an emerging space for ‘dialectical thinking’.

The Element of Bonding

An Urban Adaptation to Excess Heat

4th Year Project (MArch) Diploma 3 - ‘The Tenet of Ecology’ with Andrew Yau and Jonas Lundberg

The urban infrastructure of tunnel vents, typically ubiquitous and camouflaged in public, is key to the architecture of subterranean weather generation. They enable whole atmospheres from the depths of the city to be transported and re-circulated. Instead of deeming it as an ‘undesirable by-product’, our cities could harness excess urban heat as a ‘bonding element’ for their diverse, customary lifestyles.

The Valley, the Hill, the Mountain, and the Sky: Heat-driven Social Condensers of Bangalore

The proposed building prototypes evolve the concept of the vent into inhabitable zones within the public realm where thermal shifts becomes the main driver of space. It’s a world in co-habitation with rising temperatures.

Proposed Structure of Traditional Craft and Emerging Ceramic Fabrication

Celebrating both vernacular and emerging ceramic production technology, the design inverts and integrates the notion of the ‘chimney’.

Enclosures of varying porosity begin to form spatial hierarchies - corresponding to the thermal conditions of its locality - the Bangalorean way of crafting, gathering, and bonding with nature

As urbanisation and urban verticality increase, so does the stagnation of excess heat. The architecture of this project looks beyond principles of cooling, and aims instead for a more dynamic relationship between lifestyle, nature and urban heat energy in the city.

NT’S PARK, LONDON

As humans and societies progress, the concept of “Nature” becomes ever more complex and blurred. Landscapes evolve from hunting grounds, to productive farmlands, and to pleasurable parks and conservatories. Violence and the act of land deformation are part of a continuous cycle.

The prim and proper ‘Nature’ presented in Rent’s Park is constantly giving the impression an untainted natural landscape despite being ghtly managed and controlled. The practice of reserving’ the landscape, and the ornamention of the tree in the Park entails a very geeric user experience in urban parks, where

plant life is reduced to a single-faceted appearance on the landscape. As a contradiction to the static outcome of Regent’s Park, the project proposes a re-terraformation of the English landscape, to one which embraces ephemerality.

Rather than stressing on the duality of “natural” vs “artificial” and “nature” vs “man”, the project calls for a societal shift to look beyond the superficial mode of presenting landscapes, to embrace them by virtue of their ephemeral qualities.

Man vs Plant Circulation

Breaking out of their traditional arrangements and breaking beyond their ornamental function, moving trees in the proposed canals create a fluid space in which humans and nature interact freely.

Rest & Recover!

Eco-tourism in the Ghost Landscapes of Murcia

2rd Year Project (BA) Intermediate 11 - ‘Toxic Tourism’ with Nerea Calvillo and Manu Collado

Stages of Growth Deposited posidonia as natural insulation for the ghost buildings of murcia

The project provides a series of caravan stops from former architectural wastes that were once miners’ residence. As a critique to the current waste distribution channels, waste harvested through the caravaner‘s journey is localized with the designated station, creating a new typology for tourism that enables a socially-inclusive waste management. The highway of site provides the access and mobility, interconnecting lands of Murcia’s various industrial dumps. From these flatlands slowly emerges a new wastescape, a habitable totem amidst the castaway land.

‘Rotary Bridge’ A collaboration between selected young engineers at BuroHappold and young architects at WilkinsonEyre, the aim was to develop a conceptual design for a cycling/pedestrian bridge in Copenhagen. The proposed bridge translates the motion of pedaling into its retractive floor plate mechanism across the harbour.
