POINT-LINE-PLAN A PROCESS FROM 2D TO 3D CORE STUDIO I ARCH 6280
GROUP1
GROUP2
This exercise begins a sequence of exploratory activities in the realm of abstraction, involving photography, drawing, and model-making. Each part of the sequence will derive from the one before it, and involve both translation (photo to drawing, drawing to model), and iteration (making multiples).
KEYWORDS: DIFFERENCE / REPETITION FIGURE / FIELD MOVEMENT / STASIS TENSION / REPOSE

The process of transforming the abstractions of lines and spaces on the flat paper surface to a construction of surfaces that shape space is a step into architecture –although the critical dialogue of abstraction is maintained –and intensified.
ITERATION 1
Final Drawing
ITERATION 2 Step 1: This exploration involves selecting 3 photos from the two groups of 9, and undergoing a process of translation –into a line-based drawing, one for each photo. The media used for the drawings is a soft drawing pencil. Each drawing is 6” x 6” square on Bristol paper. Experiment using the iterative method, using tracing paper in overlays to test visual and compositional ideas. Use the value (lighter to darker) of lines to achieve depth, transition, variety, etc. Experiment with compositions and refer back to the list of “dualities” in the first exercise.

Final Drawing (Colored)

Step 2: After each 6” x 6” drawing is deemed to be complete, a new translation combines elements from each of the 3 drawings into a new drawing.

PAINTING AS SITE CUBIST LANDSCAPE CORE STUDIO I ARCH 6280
Using different types of lines, construct speculative geometries and abstract compositions from a cubist painting. Use multiple overlays of the tracing paper to explore new structures and compositions. After that, produce a “spatial relief ” and translate the cubist drawing and white spatial relief into a constructed artifact (scale model) at a larger scale.

Extracted from the cubist shapes from the painting, vibrant and dramatic spaces are resonating to each other. The light effect magnifies the resonance and creates a sense of mystery to the interior spaces.

CORNER PARK “KIT OF PARTS” CORE STUDIO I ARCH 6280
Zoom-in View 1
Perspective View (SE)
Objectives • Explore the making of architectural spaces and experiences by designing a CORNER PARK that includes: 1. A Major and a Minor Path 2. A Primary and a secondary entrance 3. A large gathering space and 2 smaller gathering spaces 4. Interesting transition spaces, different kinds of enclosures, and views from space to space • Use geometry and proportion in composing and organizing the overall design. • Consider equally the overall composition of the design (site) and the site as a series –or narrative, of connected sensory experiences. • Consider the role of light in the design, and the effects of shade and shadow.

THE SOLUTION TO “KIT OF PARTS” This corner park aims to provide a seggregated and tranquil space in the center of downtown city. The outside high wall ensures the private-intimate interior space. All long and thin kit of parts functions for tectonic use. The paths which lead to the center activity spaces are narrow just so the a sense of mystery is increased when traversing through the paths. An open large courtyard in the center is open for public gathering, and two smaller chambers for priviate gathering are parallel to each other. The pavillion-like structures casts a good amount of shades and shelters for visitors.

MUSIC HOUSE A MERGE OF CUBIST LANDSCAPE AND CORNER PARK CORE STUDIO I ARCH 6280
SITE-LANCASTER COMMUNITY PARK, Millesville Pike, Lancaster, PA 1.5 miles/8 mins driving to Fulton Theatre 1. Planet Fitness (Fitness Center) 2. Guitar Center 3. Manor Shopping Center 4. House of Pasta (Restaurant) 5. Direction to Downtown (Fulton Theatre)
3D Model View 1 (No claddings)
This project combine the design from the previous two, and a site is chosen for the final design. The model for corner park is to be rotated 90 degrees. The “ground” becomes a vertical wall. The wall is altered but remain a structural entity that supports stairs and floors. The House negotiates the given forms and spaces of the site. The House is aiming to provide a comfortable living space for a Broadway actor/actress to spend their vacations, hold an after party and socialize with his/her friends.

Study Model 2 (SW)
The highlight of the house is an interior stage at the negative four level and an outdoor stage on the ground level connected by a circulation through the backstage. The back stage in between the circulation is a versatile space which could function as place for make-up, storage, socialize and a trasitional space to the upper level. Study Model 3 (NE)

CONCRETE PARK PAVILLION
The inspiration is gained from a taking off paper plane. The structure is aiming to utilize a triangular truss to hold up two pieces of pre-cast concrete (very thin) and make this heavy material look light and dreamy on the site. Visitors could experience interesting shadows during daytime and welcoming warm light during nighttime.

Study Sketches and Models
Design a small pavilion and gathering space in a city park. There is a sloping site to work with, and all of the construction are made of sitecast concrete. The site requires excavation and the construction of sitecast concrete retaining walls to allow for a level surface on which to construct the pavilion. The overall design of the pavilion/site aims to provide a place of retreat for individuals or small groups, offering shade, places to sit, and interesting views and experiences (arriving and departing). 3D Models Views of different times of a day

First Sketch
The project aims to provide shelter, seating and social distancing (to prevent COVID-19) for waiting passengers on campus of Georgia Tech. A shape of beehive/ hexagon is inspired by BUZZ, the school mascot. The hexagon gets to develop into an octahedral space and other three dimensional spaces which connect to it on the edge. Each space is segregated from one another. Study Model
