Yates County is the largest grower of wine grapes outside of California, boasting over 5,000 acres of luscious vineyards that frame the lakes amongst the hillsides.

Here you’ll find over 30 world-class wineries and the ability to enjoy two official wine trails; the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Yates County is also a destination for those looking for a craft beverage getaway paying homage to well-established breweries and emerging distilleries.

We mean it when we say Yates County is the true heart of the Finger Lakes. Many wonderful neighboring areas and attractions are just a short drive away. So, hop in the car, roll down the windows and drive!

Route 364 – Penn Yan to Potter > Middlesex along Route 245 This countryside road is a great drive to get a taste of thriving Mennonite farms and life. Take this route to get to Naples for great hiking and the Canandaigua Lake area.

Route 54A – Penn Yan to Hammondsport You can drive all around “The Crooked Lake” in an hour! Dotted with wineries, lakeshore cottages and country roads. Be sure to look for roadside stands for produce and flowers along the way.

Hammondsport is noted for one of the coolest small towns in America!

Route 54 – Penn Yan to Dresden This road follows the Keuka Outlet Trail that connects Keuka to Seneca Lake. A breathtaking drive of farmscapes especially beautiful during fall foliage and the springtime. There are two ice cream stands nearby: Spotted Duck and Mr. Twistees.

Route 14 along Seneca Lake Lush vineyards, working farms and world-class wineries along the west side of sparkling Seneca Lake. The southern tip of the lake on this route will lead you into the charming town of Watkins Glen or go north and you’ll hit Geneva.

Italy Valley Road A mecca for the outdoor adventurist who appreciates open air and wide open spaces! This remote road will lead you to miles of forests and hiking opportunities. A featured access point is Italy Hill State Forest, part of the Finger Lakes Trail.

We border three out of the eleven glorious Finger Lakes – Seneca, Keuka and Canandaigua. Whether you rent a boat, stay at a lakefront cottage, fish in the Keuka Outlet or visit one of the lakefront parks, there’s always something to do on the water.

FISHING The opportunities that Keuka and Seneca Lake have to offer for aspiring or experienced anglers are endless. It may be the beautiful scenic waterway of the Keuka Outlet that runs between the lakes, from Penn Yan to Dresden. This waterway offers a bounty of spring run trout from Seneca Lake in April and fall run trout usually starting in October. The outlet is also home of many stocked trout species, large and small mouth bass, and pan fish species.

Pan fish, perch, crappie, bass, and pike species are prevalent in both lakes and can be caught year-round. During the colder months of the year, ice fishing may be another fishing opportunity for you. A bounty of pan fish, perch, pickerel, pike, crappie, and bass are there for catching. Please be sure to visit the Department of Environmental Conservation for fishing regulations that may apply.

THE P U B L I C K U N I V ERSA L FRI EN D, JE MIMA WIL KINSON Jemima Wilkinson was an American religious leader who brought hundreds of believers to Yates County, the largest settlement in Western New York. After suffering a severe illness in 1776, the Friend claimed to have died and been replaced as a genderless evangelist named the Publick Universal Friend, and afterward shunned both birth name and gendered pronouns. Publick Universal Friend launched a completely unique religious movement, where the teachings and social influence would permanently shift American views on religion, slavery, race, gender, and colonialism. Yates County History Center owns the largest known collection of artifacts and manuscript materials relating to Wilkinson and the Society of Universal Friends.
