material lab

Climate & Sustainability Design (Research & Design Project) Material Lab is the project that connects production, education, housing, workshops and recreational areas. Designed in the light of three main concepts; sustainable and local materials, short-chain economy and positive waste, the project become a contemporary design that challenges up to date issues regarding climate and sustainability at the same time provides different spaces responding needs and joy of a 21st- century people. Material Village system is based on a cycle comprising of four primary sectors namely construction, accommodation, business, education. While each sector has its cycle which contributes to the system loop that we are creating. A way of life in this village is designed that the material becomes a central part of the whole ecosystem. The main concern of the “material and waste” group is to explore sustainable local materials and the ways of using them. In doing so it is aimed to contribute to the circular and local economy of both, the village that is located in the industrial area and the city of Gent.

The future of the village is foreseen to be constructed from only sustainable and local materials with good performance. Production of these materials should support the short-chain economy in the village as well as contribute to material and waste flows in the city. In addition to the material list that has been proposed for the whole village, reuse of the materials, structures and built elements is highly supported. Spaces are designed concerning the full cycle of materials’ life by thinking about their production, use, disposal and circulation. The warehouse is the place for re-manufacturing, assembling/ disassembling and storing the materials. Workshop and education spaces contribute to the development of materials and their engagement with people. Materials with no specific function or second life scenario were repaired and stored for the resident of the village. Housing that works based on renting system and support co-living aspects are designed for disassembly and based on a grid system, integrates a number of proposed materials and creates healthy habitat for its residents. design team: Achet Walling, Jiefei Ma, Emre Seyran, Ekin Başkentli, Yasemin Okumuş 3

location of the village We designed the project by thinking and integrating different stages. The construction phase of the Material Lab and the village is important. At this stage the building is used as a production area and storage of the materials from which village will be constructed.

village construction phase

Material Village is located on the north of Ghent city. The district Meulestede is stretched between the city center and the harbor area. short-chain economy: it is a business model which supports local production and aims to close the material life cycles inside of the specific site.

Warehouses, the canal and wide range of raw materials are main elements of the site.

phase of living in Material Village

We designed an architectural program that is based on education aiming to develop more socially supported building processes that would benefit the village and the city. The identity of our system and building model is based on sharing the knowledge of materials with people in Gent and Belgium. To do this, we envision a material school that reflects our local identity. The material school and the village itself will construct frameworks of new forms of interaction among humans, material, technology, and nature.

womens house, view from the backyard

womens house

Kaira Looro Architecture for Peace 2021 The design focuses on creating a safe environment where discussions on topics such as equality and human rights will be held. It functions as a catalyst for the involvement of the female community in the village trough their participation in the construction process where they will hold these conversations. With such a program and the creation of job opportunities the Women’s House will contribute to the development of Baghere Village economically and socially. The placement and orientation of the building underlines the horizontality of the main road, coherent with climatic requirements, intended to intrigue passersby. The form takes reference from the surrounding buildings and proposes a new arrangement trough flexible interiors which creates a modern space with a safe cozy atmosphere. The Women’s House nests in between trees and frames the backyard where construction workshops for women will occur. It is accessible for all and welcomes everyone to join the conversation.

The selection of materials made based on local availability and incorporates traditional construction techniques, making it ecologically and economically sustainable. An iconic pool that creates a melody with water is located at the core of the building. Visitors can directly pass through the building to the backyard. Interior spaces that span on both sides of the pool are based on the sequence of different functions and well designed flexibility. Overall the house embeds itself within the landscape as well as the local community reflecting Senegal’s cultural vibrancy.

We have designed a structure modelled around the idea of inclusivity. It functions as a catalyst for the involvement of the female community in the village and surrounding areas. By means of their involvement in the construction process, they have an integral stake in and remain at the core of the Women’s House from construction to use. The construction of the house is instrumental in the future socio-economic development of the town by means of the creation of job opportunities, and a space to advance the participation of women in all aspects of society.

the nest - girls sanctuary Dewan Award for Architecture 2021

Welcome to the Nest, a safe haven for girls. The design strives to sustain a neighbourhood atmosphere where the girls will feel serene, stable and protected. The Nest will be their home until they are fledged enough to fly away. Typological referencing The main reason for the strong typological referencing to traditional Iraqi houses beyond climatic advantages was creating a familiar and comfortable living atmosphere. Interior configurations are arranged according to the facilitation of healing in welcoming environments. Psychological aspect Creation of colorful environments, integration of plants, protected outdoor spaces, levels of privacy, supervision, easy navigation and visual access between spaces are prioritized after meticulous study of violence psychology in design. In addition to spatial arrangements spaces for psychological consultation are provided. Integration of activities Beyond programmatic requirements, the placement of educational, cultural, health and creative activities are based on their integration with daily life. Fluidity Although certain age groups are separated , clear boundaries are avoided. The transitions will be made through seamless demarcations such as placement of building volumes and color changes in the arc passageways. Materials Material selection made based on local availability, ease of construction, safety and health aspects. Rammed earth walls offer climate comfort and improve air quality for interior spaces, colourful EPDM rubber used for playing zone is extremely durable and safe, these main materials support circular and sustainable aspects. Dialogue with the unique ecosystem An intimate, playful relationship with the water is essential to benefit from its therapeutic effects as well as productivity. Therefore the pier overlays the entire shore uninterrupted. Play Axis / Tigris River Finally, just like the spine of the Fertile Crescent - Tigris river the play axis spans the entirety of the plot connecting activities and the girls, helping them blossom.

Design Studio, Master In a modern world, building a house or a structure is perceived as something that needs a big arrangement of prefabricated building elements, involvement of different parties, companies, a big budget or a house loan. We do not seek materials in nature anymore or we do not try to design something that does not fit the standard elements or dimensions. That situation leads to a very first question of the design, what if we do not have all these standards, what if I want to build something from nothing? - So, what does it mean ‘building from nothing’? - Ask nature. Starting from the question, the design process mainly developed with the support of primitive and basic way of thinking. The earth or ‘a nothing’ evolved into a structure, a concept and the idea. Elements of nature shaped the design and the design itself become a variable body that may be returned back to the nature. The Spiral starts from the hole and also ends there. Walls grows around the hole, creating a spiral. Different levels in the space support the movement of sand inside. Changing levels also provide a varying perception a space. Walls of the Spiral create the journey inside. Continous walls are differ in size and shape. They are protectors. Sand movement influenced the shape and the scenario of the Spiral. Its unstable and uncertain nature flourished the space. The spiral is a design that does not control or block the sand yet it creates an alternative environment for sand to exist, move or re-shape.

The Spiral has a diameter of 30 meters. Starting from the entrance walkway is slowly goes down and reaches the stairs and the small courtyard. 5 meter high continuous earth walls are the main elements. The courtyard is the central and the deepest point of the structure. It is connected to the shelter/to the hidden room. The enless sky observed from the outside is constrainted into a circular frame here. The burning sun light slightly blocked with the surrounding layered walls. The room is the final point of the journey. It could be constructed in the different shapes by using different techniques. High walls protect the room from the sand and hot climate. Unlike the rest part of the structure the room is the only space that is totally under the ground an can be completely closed. Spiral in the time Being an open structure, the Spiral allows the sand enter inside or piled up adjasent to the walls. The sand slowly travels from outside through the walkway inside and back. That situation can be described as accidential, so each time the Spiral walkway can be seen differently, narrow or wide, walls high or low, or the whole structure can dissapear under the earth. Meanwhile, it is a place where sand is dancing, where birds could place their nests, where the sun feelt not destructive. Shadow of the walls may help the vegetation spread over the structure. One could overnight under the earth walls. So, the spiral can become an oasis or return to itself to the earth. 25

The project mainly shaped and evolved around four steps. These steps created the base for idea, concept, shape and site of the project and became an inspiration for a development of design. Stories connected to the elements are based mostly on personal observations and experiences, so there is no direct references.

The site is situated at the intersection of old and new iiiareas, includes itself faculty buildings, several damaged and abandoned buildings and green areas. Having lost its usefulness, the site started to die away within the city. The masterplan study aims to develop the site by replacing structures, emphasizing various functions and green areas planned to exist in campus site. Providing social and recreational social areas, additionally, integrate the site to the urban pattern with the support of city’s physical and conceptual elements. Student center that located at the central and lively area of the university campus, connects itself various functions which, in theory, reflect life of 21st century learning environments. Form of the student center mainly shaped by combining functions of it, to create specialized spaces which are tied up with each other.

32

Auditorium which is placed at the central part of the building, surrounded by classrooms, working spaces, workshops etc, serve as connection point of the building. Two courtyards divide building into 3 parts to provide more private areas for classrooms, labs and workshops.General purpose and special use classrooms are divided by foldable walls to provide flexibility. Southern and northern corridors provide common areas for exhibition, working and resting. Accomodation building is placed at the north-west corner of the campus site which is partly isolated from academic and social zone and does not disturbed physically and functionally by surroundings. The main pupose of the accomodation building is to connect different people groups and room types to create space both publicity and privacy in the building. Courtyard that provides natural light for building, also visually connects rooms corridors placed at different levels. By providing social zones as shared kitchen, terraces, eating areas inside the building, it is aimed to create shared living rooms for all residents.
