If you didn’t get your copy, let us know and we’ll arrange for a further copy to be delivered to you. You can read about their adventures on page 5.
What an amazing amount of money raised at the recent Harvest Supper auction for a worthy cause. Well done to everyone involved.
Apologies for the error in the wheelie bin collections last month, hopefully you all realised that the bins should have been collected on the Fridays While we’re on the subject of rubbish – it has been reported (and noticed) there has been an increase in the amount of litter being scattered around the parish. One kind villager picked up over a dozen items on a walk around the village alone.
Each month we send over 40 separate emails as a reminder to everyone to submit anything they would like included in The Eagle. The deadline for all articles is the 20th of each month – anything received after this date may not be included. After the next issue – which is the bumper double December/January issue – we won’t be sending these emails out as a reminder. So, please note the th 20 in your diaries as the date not to be missed!!!

Notes from the Parish Council As yet we are still awaiting a final decision from Grantscape regarding our application for playing field equipment and storage facilities, but we have clarified some figures and the application is being processed right now. In August Yarnscombe PC received a grant of £3000, part of this money has so far been spent on football goals, a security post which allows disabled access to field but stops cars entering it without prior permission. The base for the wooden shelter is down and weather permitting, it could be fully erected by the time you read this. We have passed the external audit for the year 2015/16 and the full report can be accessed via the website www.yarnscombe.org.uk . As ever, comments or suggestions are always welcome and any items that you would like to be formally discussed at a parish council meeting need to reach the clerk by the 3rd Wednesday of every month.

From your District Councillor I am pleased to report that TDC have given back to the communities it serves around £80,000 from the New Homes Bonus Scheme. Some of the money has been spent in Yarnscombe (grass cutting equipment) with more to be spent in the next financial year. I have dealt with 22 emails and calls from Yarnscombe parish this month: these included 14 on Planning, 4 on Roads and 1 regarding the cost of The Head of Paid Service at TDC. Trick or Treat
Monday 31st October The response from all the villagers last year towards the children of the Youth Group during Halloween was amazing and thoroughly enjoyable. The Youth Group wanted those of you in the village centre (sorry to those of you in the outskirts) to know that they intend to be out and about “trick or treating” on Monday evening starting at the Village Hall at 5:30pm. It would be great to see as many of you during the evening.

Christmas Fayre
St Andrew’s Church Christmas Fayre Between 10:00am and 12noon at The Village Hall The usual stalls (books, cakes, food, gifts, raffle) will be available with a Christmas flavour and the refreshments will include mince pies and some “particularly festive coffee” See you there!!
Adventures ‘round and ‘bout If you say to those uninitiated in countryside driving “I drove 25 miles in 3 hours”, they’d probably think that you were stuck in traffic on one of those big roads (otherwise known as dual carriageways or motorways). But to me, here in Yarnscombe, driving 25 miles in 3 hours meant I drove around the parish and visited pretty much every single property delivering The Eagle (and the Torrington Crier) last month (as Barry was on holiday and Pat was also away)!!!! And what fun it was. Ian, Michael and myself covered all corners of the parish and managed to meet and chat to a number of our fellow parishoners. How lovely that was too. In the two years we’ve been living in the village we have been meaning to explore the parish. To see it from so many angles, seeing rabbits and pheasants in gardens, green fields for miles and travelling down some very interesting “roads” was exhilarating. My car was in dire need of a jet wash when we got home! If we missed you last month, apologies, just let us know and we’ll get a copy of October’s Eagle to you. A big thank you to Ian, Samuel and Michael for helping me deliver the previous issue of The Eagle.

A Letter from the Vicar Dear friends, On the weekend just gone Manchester held the 'Heroes' Parade' to celebrate the record breaking performances of GB's Olympic and Paralympic teams in Rio. The names of many of these athletes will be rightly remembered for years and decades to come. But the memories that really matter to us are of people who have been special and close to us personally. Our churchyards are full of memories of loved ones spanning generations. And Remembrance Sunday (13th November this year) continues to be relevant as not only do we look back with thanksgiving for those who lost their lives in the world wars, but even today service men and women are risking their lives in service of their country and in the cause of peace. We all know how important it is to remember what really matters. Frequently in the Bible God’s people are urged to remember. For example: ‘Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced’ (1 Chronicles 16:12) ‘On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.’ (Psalm 63:6) And perhaps most importantly when Jesus shared his last supper with his disciples he told them ‘Do this in remembrance of me’ (Luke 22:19). The old symbols of the bread and the wine of the Jewish Passover were filled with new meaning. 'This is my body… This is my blood…. shed for you.' These words are at the centre of our worship as Christians and remind us always of God’s love for us. When the cares of the world fills our minds, or when the life seems too much, do we remember the most important man who ever lived- the one who gave his life for us? Every blessing

Harvest Supper and Auction The St Andrew's Church annual harvest supper and auction took place on Tuesday 4 October. It was good to see our team rector, Mike Clark, in attendance. Our sincere thanks to all who supported the event and to all who helped to make it an enjoyable evening by donating, preparing or serving food, or by giving up their time to help with the practicalities. I am pleased to be able to report that the event raised the sum of £1,095, from which we shall shortly be making a donation to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust.

We had both been regular attendees at North Molton Church’s Sunday service where the congregation was between 40 and 50. With some apprehension, I started going to St Andrew’s but this was quickly dismissed as, although there is a far smaller congregation, the singing is strong and gives confidence to the most tuneless soul. It would be wonderful if this lovely church started to attract those new to the village.

Youth Group We’ve arranged various visits and activities in the run up to Christmas – make a note of these dates in your diaries. It would be great to see you. It would be great to see as many of the children of the village dressed up in their Halloween best for us to go “trick or treating” in one group on 31st October. We’ll meet at the Village Hall at 5:30pm and we’ll go around the Village in one group. 11th November
Karen Hutton in the village has kindly offered to come along with some clay for the children to produce some pottery works of art! So come along for a fun evening.

Short Mat Bowls This month some of our bowlers travelled to the Isca Centre in Exeter to compete in the Devon County Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours competition, playing against teams from all over Devon. All players have reached the final rounds which they will play later in the year – so good luck and congratulations for getting this far. Seven of our bowlers also play for the Devon Premier Team and they will have represented Devon on Saturday 23rd at the Isca Centre competing against Dorset. Not bad for a small village bowling club. Events Diary – November and December Barnstaple Male Voice Choir @ 7:30pm Interval drinks and Raffle. Founded in 1919, the choir currently has about 60 members and a wide repertoire. Barnstaple Male Voice Choir sing to raise money for good causes, performing charity concerts for various local organisations, including Devon Air Ambulance and the local Methodist Church. The Choir gives Concerts at many venues, locally and further afield. We have sung in Italy, Cork, Waterford, Germany, Brittany, Wales and many places in Devon & Cornwall including the Eden Centre, Exeter Cathedral and Buckfast Abbey, as well as giving concerts with other choirs. This is a very friendly Choir.

Village Defibrillator

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall). The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is
0000 (four zeros) followed by the Tick symbol This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

Eagle Subscription 2017 The Eagle has now been in existence since 1984, when it cost £1 per year. The average house price was £29,000 and a gallon of petrol was £1.80 (40p a litre); today, those figures are £220,000 and £5.25 (£1.15) respectively. The Eagle is still, thirty two years later, the same price - a minimum contribution of £1 per year (eleven copies = 9p per month); printing and paper costs have increased considerably since 1984 and there are now a greater number of editions and pages than there were previously. Because of this, we are asking that all households who wish to receive The Eagle make a minimum payment of £3 (36p a copy) as from February next year.
