The Eagle Note from the Editors The focus of the village is now on the Scarecrows, Cider Walk and BBQ due to take place on SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER. Full details and times, etc can be found on page 5.

It has been another year of amazing scarecrows that have been put together – the photos of which will be displayed on Saturday evening when the results will be announced as well as being featured on the village Facebook page. This event is certainly another way of showing off our village and how creative our residents are.

From your District Councillor I am writing this article after arriving home from a charity evening in aid of the Children's Hospice Southwest where a nice crowd of folks helped raise over £650 at a Bingo night where I had the pleasure of being the 'the caller' for the very first time in my life.

On the way home I was thinking about all the tremendous work is done by volunteers for the many charities within and outside the UK. To this end, I'm pleased that Torridge Council continue to help many charity and voluntary organisations through serious reductions in their business rates for their shops and offices throughout the district.

Just a few days ago I attended a meeting in Torrington regarding the future of North Devon Hospital.

Although the speeches all came from one side of the argument, I truly believe our main hospital is in serious danger of closure if some people get their way - leaving the nearest facility at either Plymouth or Exeter. It is very rare that I encourage you all the stand up and be counted over any issue, however, I really do think we need to make our voices heard through writing to the media and to those who will make the final call.

Notes from the Parish Council Firstly, a big “Thank you” to Cllr. Williams who tidied up the inside of the telephone box and installed plastic shelving unit, so the “Yarnscombe Book Box” is open and so far, we have received very positive feedback. Over the last couple of days the kiosk has also been painted and looks its best once more. So, please come and have a look, swap some books and add to the existing stock.

As mentioned last month, the Parish Council has now taken over responsibility for maintenance of the playing field. At our last meeting, it was agreed to select one councillor as contact point for all matters regarding the field. Cllr, Rachel Stephens volunteered to act as “Playing Field Representative” and she can be contacted via email: rach.stephens@hotmail.co.uk The council has also decided to erect a wooden shelter with veranda in one corner of the field, as this would give parents and children alike a meeting point and a way of watching games. We have been able to do so, with help of a grant given by Cllr. Morrish, for which we are very grateful. Over the next couple of months, we will decide how best to spend the remaining money, suggestions are always welcome.

Scarecrow Competition

NURSERY RHYMES was the theme.

30+ scarecrows have been put in place around the parish - in time for the Bank Holiday weekend so judging can take place during the next week.

The time and place for the winners to be announced will be Saturday

September at 7:30pm in the Village Hall (after the Cider Walk).

Cider Walk and Barbecue The Cider Walk starts from 4:30pm onwards at the Village Hall. £5.00 per adult. £2.00 per child (between 8yrs and 14yrs) Free for under 8yrs.

The walk starts at the Village Hall and stops off at three key places around the parish to sample three different ciders (orange juice will also be available). It’s a wonderful walk of about 4 miles and gives you the opportunity of meeting and catching up with your fellow villagers.

A Letter from the Vicar Dear friends, Appointment of a new Team Vicar.

We are delighted that, subject to certain formalities, the appointment process for a new Team Vicar to be based in Newton Tracey was successful. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the name of the person remains confidential so I am not able to give any more details at this stage! It may be that by the time you read this the formal announcement has been made. I will give more information next month.

Devon Historic Churches Day. As mentioned last month this takes place on 10th September. Some local events are taking place including a shorter walk within St Giles parish. A group of us from various parishes will be walking from Yarnscombe church to St Giles. We will leave Yarnscombe at 2pm for a walk of about 5 ½ miles ending at St Giles' cream tea later in the afternoon. Sponsorship forms are available from www.devonhistoricchurches.co.uk Half the money raised comes back to your nominated parish. Nature Notes I hate to say it, but autumn is with us. Where did the summer go? However, on the bright side, it is a time when wild creatures seek to fatten up before winter, and the fields and gardens are full of food for birds and mammals and insects. Or is it? Is your garden 'wildlife' friendly?

Modern farming techniques ensure that very little is left to be gleaned from harvested crops before the fields are ploughed again. Hedges are usually cut back so drastically that maybe the only berries available are blackberries. So gardens have become increasingly important as oasis in what is virtually an agricultural desert (but there are exceptions!).

Put out food for birds in properly designed feeders or on a rat-proof bird table. They should be placed not too far from bushes or some form of cover so that the birds can escape from predators, such as sparrow-hawks. Plants like hawthorn and holly and rowan trees, can provide food and shelter. Niger seeds will attract goldfinches, peanuts bring tits, woodpeckers and nuthatches, and mealworms are good for robins and other insectivorous birds. A source of water, such as a bird bath or a pond, will draw birds to your garden and, in the case of the pond, it will provide a home for frogs, toads and newts, and other creatures such as dragonflies.

To attract butterflies, we need to plant shrubs or flowers which provide the nectar on which they feed. The buddleia, or butterfly bush, is the obvious example which, with a bit of careful pruning, will bloom year after year. Primroses and polyanthus, alyssum, sweet rocket, valerian, sedum and Michaelmas daisies and wallflowers are all flowers which will bring butterflies (and bees) to your garden. They prefer simple, open flowers, not over complicated ones, like roses or dahlias, and their favourite colours are usually, pink, purple and yellow. If you want to encourage butterflies to breed in your garden, try to leave a corner with some rough grass and nettles in it. The Vanessa butterflies (small tortoiseshell, peacock and red admiral) and the comma, have larvae which eat nettle leaves, and other species eat grasses.

I hope that this has given you a few ideas in creating a wildlife-friendly garden. With a steady decline in the numbers of birds and butterflies, we need to do as much as we can to reverse the trend.

The Book Box The phone box has now been given a new coat of paint and looks amazing.

Thank you to everyone who has donated books to our Village Book (phone) Box so far – although we could do with more childrens fiction and non-fiction books please.

Feel free to go along to the “phone box” and swap books that you may have. If you have a large number of books you would like to donate for “The Book Box” please leave them in the porch at Court Cottage.

The map and information has also been updated and replaced – which will be useful for the delivery drivers (who use it quite often – apparently!!!)

Letters to the Editors Lost Umbrella “On Thursday 28th July, two teenage boys came to my door asking to borrow an umbrella, it was raining and only one of them had a black light-weight coat on. They said they were going down to the bus stop at Cloggshill Cross to catch the bus to Barnstaple and would return it on their return later on that day. One was fairly tall, quite well built and the other one was shorter, thinner with dark hair. One stated that his father lived just down the road. They both looked trustworthy, well-spoken and mannerly.

Guess What? I am still waiting for my umbrella to be returned, and I would be very grateful if anyone who reads this and has any information as to who these boys are would contact me and they will be rewarded.

Some may think “what’s all the fuss about, it’s only an umbrella”. It was given as a present to me from a very close friend who is now very poorly. It is black in colour and has the Buckingham Palace logo on it, so has a very sentimental value to it. I feel very upset and let down to think that these two boys could be so disloyal; they both looked honest and were well spoken. I didn’t ask their names or where they lived as they looked so trustworthy.

A Lizard in Yarnscombe Hi, Ed here.

I've been enjoying some much needed sunshine over the last few weeks, I expect you have too? It brings out the grasshoppers - yum yum - my favourite snack! Did any of you spot me on the bank part way down Ward Lane or maybe one of my extended family? Usually the ladies and the gents of the lizard world enjoy a bit of a bask in Spring, warming up after hibernation. More often in the summer it'll be the ladies that like to sun themselves, putting up their feet whilst they wait for the patter of tiny ones. Our babies are born in July, so it's been a bit hectic recently.

Whilst the babies were thankfully napping the other day I did some exploring and along the way I decided to count all the different woody species along the hedge. Did you know the famous Devon historian, Professor W. G. Hoskins reckoned at least a quarter of all the hedges in Devon are more than 800 years old? (Mind you lizards ruled the earth 100 million years ago)! How did he work that one out - well they say the diversity of woody shrubs in a hedge gives clues about how old the hedge is. The general rule of thumb is that in any given 30 metre stretch of hedgerow each shrub/woody species represents one hundred years. Try this out when you're next walking alongside a hedge and see if you can guess how old the hedge is. Let me know how you get on!

Another clue to the age of a hedge is the Parish boundary. It could be that hedge is very old indeed.

Parish boundaries often date back to Anglo Saxon times and most were set out by 1200AD in Devon. Why not take a look at a map of Yarnscombe and see where our boundary follows a hedge. To the east and west of our parish the boundary often follows a stream (not uncommon for boundaries of this type). Look to the north though and the boundary wiggles along old fields marked by banks and hedges. I wonder what flora and fauna we'd find there? Ummm...could be a good spot for spider snacks!

I love finding ways to fill gaps in my knowledge as well as my stomach. The lizard mind is a bit like the hedgerow - rich in species, a dense, continuous hedge provide a much more wildlife friendly environment than a short, thin, gappy one. A gappy hedge is an unhappy hedge as we say.

The church was transformed in appearance and the fragrance was amazing. It was great to see people spending time together working on such clever displays.

The horticultural show was fun and offered something for everyone to join in, it also really added to the village atmosphere in the marquee on the Saturday.

Village Defibrillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000 (four zeros) followed by the Tick symbol This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is selfexplanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

Youth Group The school holidays are nearly at an end already – it’s

During the holidays we were able to take some of the children to Exmoor Zoo with some of the proceeds from The Village Weekend. We all had such a fabulous time meeting some of the animals and keepers with the Puma providing the best “entertainment”!!!

We are also hoping that we can go along one evening to Safe Haven Exotics based in Bishops Tawton.

They are a registered charity who rescue and rehome reptiles. Date and details to follow for a “hands on” experience. We’ll let you know either in The Eagle or through the Youth Group Facebook page.
