The Eagle Note from the Editors Hopefully the majority of you were able to participate and enjoy the fabulous Yarnscombe Village Weekend that took place at the beginning of July. The weather was definitely very kind on the Saturday afternoon when the fete took place – it could almost have been planned that way!!

It was a fantastic event with so many activities going on, there was bound to be something for everyone. The Flower Festival in St Andrew’s Church was certainly well received, as was the (friendly but competitive) Horticultural Show and the yummy Big Brunch on the Sunday morning. A big “THANK YOU” to the organising team on behalf of the village.

The focus of the village is now on the SCARECROWS. This (now) annual event always proves to be very popular and successful. All entries need to be registered with Lesley and displayed by the Bank Holiday weekend, for judging to take place during the following week. The results will be announced on SATURDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER after the Cider Walk. Full details can be found on page 4 The Youth Group are looking to have a day out at Exmoor Zoo on SUNDAY 21ST AUGUST with as many of the children of the village (and their friends) as possible. If you would like to come along for this fun day with your children, contact either of the Shar(r)on’s so numbers can be finalised. Details are on the back page.

Would anyone be interested in putting together a “Farmer’s Diary” for inclusion in The Eagle each month? It doesn’t have to be a huge article, but it would be great for the rest of the village to know what’s in store for you each month.

From your District Councillor With summer well and truly with us, it is superb to see our farmers able to get on with the harvest.

At Torridge, much of my time is spent dealing with ward issues with planning by far the busiest. This month has seen 37 emails, 8 text messages and 3 letters to me from residents and business requiring action or support from myself.

I am pleased to confirm that the annual accounts from TDC look ok and, to be fair, the Council is set steady for the foreseeable future.

Notes from the Parish Council As mentioned in last month’s article, the Parish Council has now taken over responsibility for maintaining the playing field.

Since then, we have established a fortnightly cutting regime (weather permitting), extra cuts will be implemented if and when needed, for instance before the Village Weekend took place.

Within the restraints of our budget the council has purchased and installed playing field equipment. This, and any further equipment, forms part of the playing field and is community owned. It is with regret, but we feel obliged to note that should any person cause deliberate damage to this equipment that is noted by a member of public, please can the member of public report it to either the police or a member of the parish council for action.

We have now received a £3000 grant via the New Homes Bonus Scheme and at our next meeting, we will be discussing how to best use this money, so that the future of the playing field is secured.

Good news - it seems we have found a new PROW, or at least someone who can assist Cllr. Williams and lighten his work load. He has been in contact with the potential new PROW, to ensure they know what the role entails.

Councillors will be updated at our next meeting and details will follow in September edition of “Eagle”.

Scarecrow Competition

NURSERY RHYMES is the theme this year.

All scarecrows will need to be in place by Monday 29th August (the bank holiday) so judging can take place during the following week.

The date for the winners to be announced will be Saturday held at 7:30pm in the Village Hall after the Cider Walk.

The Cider Walk will be held on the same day to start from and finish at the Village Hall from 4:30pm onwards. ÂŁ5.00 per adult. ÂŁ2.00 per child (between 8yrs and 14yrs) Free for under 8yrs.

Yarnscombe Village Weekend – Update A massive thank you to the Yarnscombe Social Club who, without the support of the Committee in providing funds, the whole village weekend could not have happened. Ok the main event did make a loss, but many lessons have been learned so next year’s event will be a little different!

On the flip side the flower festival and two concerts in the Church made a surplus of over £400.

So what about next year? Well firstly the Social Club will need to agree to want to support a village community activity as they have this year. If they say yes then the organising group - who will need more volunteers particularly over the weekend please - have agreed the same weekend next year for the fete and activities in the marquee but on a different weekend, perhaps about a month later, the flower festival and concerts in the church. The feedback that too much was packed into one weekend was noted – not least by the organisers!

Bringing a community together can be no better aim or aspiration. That is what the village weekend was all about from start to finish. Long may it continue!

Yarnscombers were given a treat at the village weekend: a flower festival was held in the church, run by Marian Farr, and a wonderfully talented team, who created some extraordinarily original displays, up and over pillars and rood screens, filled every cranny with a breath-taking array of summer colour.

On Friday evening the church hosted a thrilling example of early Baroque music, played on the instruments of the period. The incredible acoustics augmented the sounds of music for which the church was originally designed.

Saturday’s traditional fete and beer festival in the grand marquee was a triumph. It sported an array of horticultural, creative and culinary exhibits across the age spectrum; while the Oggle Band in the evening had the joint jumping, with everyone (attempting to!) stomp their stuff.

Sunday’s Big Brunch in the village hall lived up to its name, for it even included a glass of Buck’s Fizz, to well over a hundred attendees. Ploughcappella sang their hearts away in the evening, with a deliciously eclectic and harmonious repertoire. Small Town Jones finished the weekend with a contrasting range of Jim Jones’ original material, ably backed by Dave Little.

What a team, you all did the most amazing job, everyone who visited the church was totally bowled over by the displays. The scent of the flowers hit you on entering the church. What a triumph it looked beautiful. I left the displays up for as long as I could, it seemed so sad to take all that hard work down. If you have a moment, the visitors book in the church makes a rewarding read.

Huge thanks to the committee from all Yarnscombers, for giving so much time, effort and charisma to a wonderful weekend; particularly to the Purchases, Harrisons, Farrs, Harrises, Averys, Bryces, Grahame Thomas, Sharron Newberry, the Latters – and very many more. A Letter from the Vicar Dear friends, I write shortly after our service to say goodbye to Rev Katie Cross and her family after three years. It is hard to believe it has been only three years as Katie has brought so much to our churches and communities. We will miss them very much and they all go with our love and prayers.

Interview process for new Team Vicar We are currently in the process of finding a new Team Vicar who will live at Newton Tracey Rectory.

Interviews are happening this month, so hopefully we will have some good news to share next month. Please pray for those who are applying and members of our churches who will be on the interview panel.

Devon Historic Churches day- 10th September Devon Historic Churches is an excellent charity which gives grants in the region of a few thousand pounds to help local churches with vital repairs. Several of the churches in our Mission Community have benefited from these grants in recent years. Some of our churches will be fundraising for the charity (with 50% of the money raised coming back to the local church) on 10th September including local sponsored walks. There will also be a group undertaking a longer walk between several of our parishes. More details of this will follow next month but if you think you would like to be involved please contact me.

Confirmation On Sunday October 16th we will be having a Confirmation service in our Mission Community with Bishop Nick, the Bishop of Plymouth. If you are part of a C of E church but have never been confirmed why not think about it? In a confirmation service we get the chance to make for ourselves the promises made for us at our baptism, and to have the bishop and congregation pray for us as we take a new step in our Christian life. While confirmation is not the strict requirement to be a communicant member of the church that it used to be, it is still an expectation that those who want to regularly take communion will choose to be confirmed. Nature Notes We are well into summer and yet I have not yet seen very many butterflies. Meadow browns and ringlets fluttering between the bramble flowers are common enough but the sight of a tortoiseshell or a peacock or a red admiral is rare and I have seen only one painted lady (butterfly!) so far.

There are few bumblebees or honeybees but there is an increasing number of flies so there is food for the swallows and house martins as they swoop across the fields. That is the advantage of living in an area where there are plenty of farm animals.

You may have noticed a small hawk perched on the telephone wires on the road out to Clogshill Cross. Sometimes, it may be seen hovering over the verge or a nearby field, keeping its head absolutely still as it does so. This is the Kestrel, a beautiful little bird of prey, with a red-brown back and grey head and tail of feathers with a white-tipped black border. It feeds mainly on mice and voles but will catch insects in the summer and, occasionally, small birds. One of our local farmers has provided nesting boxes for the Kestrels, with the happy result that they are increasing in this area and are a welcome addition to our fauna.

A fellow birdwatcher has informed me that he has seen a Red Kite over the area around Horwood.

You may remember that several months ago I reported seeing a pair of these magnificent hawks in the Yarnscombe area. They are fairly easily distinguishable from Buzzards by having narrower, longer angled wings and a deeply forked chestnut tail, and their flight is more buoyant. They prey on small mammals and birds and will feed on dead creatures and scraps from rubbish tips - they are not fussy. But their appeal, to the casual observer, lies in their beauty and mastery of the skies.

The weakness of the pound, abroad, may turn our thoughts to holidays within the UK - to Scotland for example, where there is a chance to see the more unusual birds of prey. In the lochs around the Cairngorm mountains the Osprey can be seen plunging into the water to take any trout that ventures near the surface. If you are very lucky, you might spot a Golden Eagle in the more remote parts of the Highlands. In the Western Isles of Mull and Skye, but even in Fife, which is just north of Edinburgh, you stand a good chance of seeing the big one, the 'flying barn door' the white-tailed Eagle! Sponsored Challenge – Alzheimer’s Society On 3rd September we are taking on the challenge of completing the 26 mile Stonehenge trek organised by the Alzheimer's Society, raising money in memory of our adored and beautiful mum and nan, Lily Hocking. She suffered from this heart breaking disease for about 7 years and this year is the 5th anniversary of when she sadly passed away.

225,000 people will develop dementia (including Alzheimer's disease) this year, that's 1 every 3 minutes. Around 1 in every 20 cases of Alzheimer's disease affect people aged between 40 to 65.

This is a charity that is very close to our hearts and we aim to raise as much money as we possibly can! We would be grateful for any donations towards sponsoring us on this trek. A Lizard in Yarnscombe It’s Lizard with a Z. It’s all about me…denizen of the hedge or bank, for the Devon pedant. I am Common and proud, I lick my own eyeballs, laze around in the sun, if lizards had sofas I’d drag mine outdoors.

My skin is scaly and that of my friends and family is brown or grey or browny grey or greyish brown or light brown or dark brown. We don’t care about colour of our skin, it is extremely variable even in a single population. Our backs are usually darker with markings bordered with white or yellow – cool, but not something I tend to see myself. Us males tend to be 'spotty' and females tend to be 'stripy' – so there you go. Our young ‘uns may be all brown or black. Underneath us males have yellow to orange coloured skin dotted with black spots, and females are yellowish grey with no spots. That’s how you tell us apart.

If you’d like to catch-up with me one day (so long as you ain’t a snake, bird, cat, fox or other hungry mammal) I’m usually observed in these hot days having a well-earned sunbathe on the side of a bank or hedge. Look out for a dark green black-eyed squiggle – I try not to move too much and prefer a pleasant grass or plant hollow in full sun.

Village Notices Dogs as neighbours It is said that “dogs are a man’s best friend”. This on a whole is true, but there are occasions and incidents that question a reverse statement is “man is a dog’s best friend”?

Unfortunately, the issue with dog fouling continues around the village. Please would all dog walkers in and around the village be considerate towards your friends and neighbours and clear up after your four-legged friend.

Failing to clean up is anti-social and can spread diseases. Information has been, and will continue to be, passed to Torridge District Council, who are authorised, once evidence has been gathered that an owner has not cleaned up any mess left by his/her dog, to be issued with a £75.00 fixed penalty notice.

Driving around the Village Villagers and their visitors are reminded to watch their speed when driving through the village and along the roads into and out of the Parish. Unfortunately, we can’t pass the word onto delivery drivers and occasional visiting vehicles, so as residents we need to ensure we are fully alert.

There are villagers who walk their dogs, some children play outside, riders on their horses not to mention our rural and domestic animals are all being put at risk. With the hedges reaching their glorious peak it is increasingly more important to reduce your speed as seeing cars coming in the other direction is becoming restricted.

The recommended speed limit within the village is 20mph and with the number of blind corners and mud/water on the roads not to mention the uneven surfaces around the parish, everyone needs to take care around Yarnscombe.

Village Defibrillator Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000 (four zeros) followed by the Tick symbol This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is selfexplanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. Youth Group The Youth Group would like to say a massive “THANK YOU” to all the organisers of the Village Weekend.

Our stall made a good profit and we will be using this to treat the children to a day out to Exmoor Zoo over the summer holidays.

Exmoor Zoo trip The date for your diary is Sunday 21st August. We will meet at the Zoo at 11:00am. If you could bring your lunch with you, we can have a picnic during the day. All children that are able to come along, remain the responsibility of the adults accompanying them.

If anyone else would like to join us on the day can they please contact us so we know numbers and if anyone needs to share transport – the more who go the cheaper it is! The prices are approximately £12.95 for adults and £9.50 per child (3-15) – under 3s are free!! If we get more than 10 people the prices reduce.
