July is the month of the big Village Weekend. It is the culmination of months of work by the organising group. The Editors would like to take this opportunity of thanking everyone involved for all their hard work in putting this event on for the village and St Andrew’s Church. If you can lend a hand in running stalls, please make contact with either Richard Purchase or Sharron.

There are tickets available for the concerts and pitches for the car boot sale – see booking details on page 8.

This is a huge opportunity for us and our neighbouring villages to get together for a weekend full of activities, entertainment and fun.

From your District Councillor Many hours this month have been spent talking with Devon County council regarding the state of our roads in rural areas like ours. I have been promised that Yarnscombe parish is high on the list for this Summer............let’s wait and see!!

I am pleased to confirm that the 1st of the monies promised from TDC to Yarnscombe is on its way to buy a new grass mower etc . This money is coming from the New Homes Bonus fund that, for the first time is being spent directly in the community rather than put into the pot at TDC. Ferret Races – Update

Cast your minds back to 23rd April 2016, when the South West Truckers held their Ferret Races in aid of the Children’s Hospice.

The dates for the Short Mat Bowls roll ups are: Wednesday July 6th 20th August 3rd 17th September 7th 21st We all hope you can make it and look forward to meeting you.

We can report that over £600.00 was raised during the evening for this local good cause.

Notes from the Parish Council At the Annual Parish Council Meeting, which took place on 25th May 2016, Cllr. Brice was re-elected as chair and Cllr. Martin was elected as vice-chair. Cllr. Williams, who had previously held the position of vice-chair, decided not to put himself forward, being already committed as chairman of the Yarnscombe Parish Emergency Team Group and acting Public Right Of Way Warden (PROW).

We would very much like to hear from anybody, who can spare a couple of hours a week and enjoys walking to fill the position of Public Right Of Way Warden (PROW). Cllr. Williams has done an excellent job over the last few years in looking after the footpaths within the parish and any volunteer(s) would be able to rely on his advice.

During the last meeting, it was decided we will no longer publish the Council’s bank balance on a monthly basis in The Eagle. It does not mean we are trying to hide anything, on the contrary, the Council’s accounts have been signed off by the Internal Auditor and once the External Auditor has returned the paperwork, it will be published on our website (yarnscombe.org.uk). Councillors discussed and concluded that simply publishing an amount without further explanation could easily give the wrong impression, namely that the Parish Council has spare money and is simply refusing to use it.

Ongoing cutbacks in the public sector mean, that every year more and more financial responsibility falls to parish councils and to stay within the given limits when setting the precept, means that we have to hold monies in reserve, simply to stay viable as a local government organisation, eg. Yarnscombe Parish Council has an annual turnover not exceeding £25,000 and to comply with the Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014 it is required to publish certain information relating to the past financial year in accordance with the Local Government Transparency Code for Smaller Authorities. The required information will be updated by the end of the month and also published on the website.

Last, but by no means least, the Parish Council has taken over full maintenance of the playing field, including the responsibility for grass cutting and placing entirely community owned equipment on the field. For any queries regarding field use, enhancement or willingness to donate equipment, please contact a parish councillor or attend one of our monthly meetings. In recognition of past work done over the years, all parish councillors would like to thank the Playing Field and Mower Fund for their contribution to our community in helping to maintain the playing field.

A Letter from the Vicar During August, the Cross family will be moving on. The three years of curacy in this area has flown by and now God is calling us to a new challenge in another part of Devon. We will be moving to Thorveton, part of the Netherexe benefice, so a bit nearer to Exeter (which will significantly reduce Zac’s travelling time to college) but still near enough for visits from friends.

We have enjoyed our time in this beautiful part of rural North Devon, the boys have learnt to surf, Paul has learnt to bake the most amazing cakes and Hannah has been singing non-stop really finding her confidence. For me, this has been a time of huge growth and learning as I have got to grips with all the things a vicar does, and yes, I really do work on more than just a Sunday!

We have been part of village life, with the festivals and fairs that happen throughout the year, I have had the huge privilege of sitting with people at some of the most moving moments in life, from birth, to marriage and death. I have talked with people from all walks of life, whether they have faith or not to explore what life might be about, and I have seen the inner workings of ancient church buildings.

I want to say thank you so much for all your support, both to me and my family. Our final service will be on Sunday 17th July at Horwood Church at 4pm. Do come along to say goodbye and celebrate with us.

And I wonder if I could ask you a favour?

We are so blessed to have such a number of wonderful churches in our villages, all with committed, if often small congregations to keep them running. Would you pop in from time to time to make sure they are supported; I can guarantee that they will be delighted to see you.

And you never know, you might just make a new friend and discover that life with God has more to offer than you could ever have imagined.

Village Weekend – Details and arrangements

So, the Yarnscombe Village Weekend is now almost upon us. We trust that everyone has tickets for either, or both, of the concerts in the church on Friday and Sunday, as well as Saturday night’s get-together with the Oggle Band in the marquee. It would be wonderful to see a full playing field on Saturday afternoon for the craft stalls, games etc. together with loads of entries for the Horticultural Show. This is possibly the biggest event undertaken in Yarnscombe for many years and we’re hoping for whole village support.

Firstly, we’re anticipating visitors from outside the village who will need to park in the Victory Hall car park. Would it be possible, therefore, for those of you who currently leave your vehicles there overnight to find an alternative for the weekend?

Secondly, a reminder that the Bingo session, originally planned for Friday 8 th July, is cancelled.

Thirdly, Sunday morning’s Big Brunch has to be ticket only as we need to know the numbers, in advance, for catering. If you’d like to be cooked for and waited on, please let Geoff or Lesley know in good time – details on the flyers. Also on Sunday morning is the Car Boot Sale – why not use it as a cracking reason to declutter! Spaces are available.

Finally, Yarnscombe is a friendly, open village where many of us feel we don’t need to consider possible consequences of not locking doors. As we are expecting numerous visitors, perhaps, for one weekend only, security needs a little more thought. At the same time, this is a wonderful opportunity to show the village off to its tidy best!

Nature Notes Mid June, and yet I have not seen any swifts anywhere. They used to nest under the eaves of my house, but they have been absent for several years, although the nesting place is still there.

Swallows and martins also appear to be fewer in number. People are more house-proud and tend to get rid of any nests because of the attendant bird droppings underneath, or down the walls. My view is that it is a price worth paying to have these delightful summer visitors with us.

There are plenty of magpies about, though, and they are not always welcome. In English fork-lore they have been associated with bad luck and bad omens. How many of us when we spot a magpie while we driving, or indeed, out for a walk, will say "Good morning Mr Magpie". I do it almost automatically! They are certainly bad news as far as nesting birds are concerned, taking both eggs and nestlings. It is one of the few species of bird which has increased in numbers over the past half century, and has become a serious pest in some parts of the country. But they are very handsome to look at and, like all the crow family, very intelligent.

June looks set to be a wet month, but what often puts a damper on our weekends is good for the roses which are blooming in our gardens and in the hedges. Fourteen species are currently accepted as native to Britain and of these, the Dog Rose is the most abundant and widespread. It can be variable in colour, from white to deep pink and can be a low growing plant to a vigorous climber and is sweetly scented. The Field Rose is a scrambler, growing no more than 3 or 4 feet above ground level. It always has pure white flowers and has a musky, honey scent. Over-enthusiastic hedgetrimming has reduced the abundance of wild roses. During World War 2 the fruits of the roses, hips, were in great demand as a valuable source of vitamin C, having a higher proportion of this than any other fruit or vegetable, including oranges. Children were paid to collect the hips, and the rose-hip syrup was given to small children to supplement their diet, under a Ministry of Health scheme. I believe it is still available commercially.

Another source of wild food is also coming into flower now, namely the blackberry or bramble. The fruits vary subtly in taste, texture and size, over 400 micro-species being recorded in Britain. With honeysuckle, the bramble adds to the beauty of our hedges, with all the other smaller flowers mentioned in last month's Eagle. Look out for wild geraniums, currently flowering near one of our footpaths.

St Andrew's Church Cream Teas 12 June 2016 We are pleased to be able to report that the Cream Teas event raised a total of ÂŁ182.00. While this is rather less than last year's total because of the weather and other simultaneous events, it will nonetheless be very helpful in maintaining the church's service to the community. We hope that all who attended enjoyed the event.

Our sincere thanks to Chris and Janet Brice for their hospitality, and to all who baked cakes and scones, served, or helped in any other way.

In Praise of Hedgerows – Part 2 Answers to the hedge riddles.

1. 2000! amazingly a single stretch of hedge can contain up to 2000 species - everything from moths and butterflies to mice and hedgehogs to a multitude of plants, fungi and microscopic life; 2001 if you count the visitors who can be found in hedges when reversing!

2. Devon Whitebeam - several unique whitebeam species are found in Devon hedges (and elsewhere in Devon) members of the Genus Sorbus, in some cases a species is known from only a single tree. The Devon Whitebeam, Sorbus devoniensis, is a true native tree of Devon, hence its name. Something to look after!

3. Brown Hairstreak - this butterfly is very dark brown with orange wing blotches and likes to live on blackthorn meaning hedges are just its thing. It is only now found in south west England and its decline is linked to the flaying of hedges which destroys its eggs - lay don't flay is the message.

4. CO2 - in the battle with climate change and to keep sunny Devon...sunny, hedges play a vital role in locking up nasty CO2. There were no hedges in Dinosaur times and look what happened to them!

5. A Farm House - managed properly a 200 metre stretch of hedge can produce enough wood to provide all the wood fuel needs of a typical farm-house.

Time for a couple of quick hedge-related facts: A single hedgehog has around 6,000 spines!

The Wren is one of the commonest hedge birds - the male builds several nests and waits until the female decides which one she likes before lining it with feathers and moss - say no more.

I'll leave you with this hedge related Anglo-Saxon riddle: 'I was the pride of pigs, a forest tree, a noble nourisher and the fruit of earth, stock of man's delight and woman's message, gold in courts. Now I am warrior's trusty battle-arm, rings bears others.'

Can you work out which common hedge species this refers to? For a clue look to the seaside.

Anyway flies are out, most go...eye-lickingly good!

Telephone Box refurbishment The telephone kiosk in the Village Square is in the process of getting a new coat of paint. Once completed the maps and information contained will be replaced with new copies.

I would like to trial using the box as a place for a village book swap both for adults and children. I have some books to start things off and would appreciate contributions from others. Once up and running I would ask anyone taking a book to leave one in its place.

My plan is to get the box refurbished inside and out. I will then place some shelving or storage for the books inside. If anyone has any books they would like to donate could they drop them off to me at Court Cottage. I am happy for them to be left in the porch.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service

Press Release Release date June 2016 Safety first for summer cooking With the summer holidays fast approaching, many children across Devon and Somerset will be spending more time in the kitchen.

But whether they’re lending a hand or simply seeking a snack, it’s important to make sure that they know the hazards of a hot hob.

So as part of the Fire Kills campaign, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is asking parents and carers to make any kitchen activities a chance for kids to learn this summer.

Station Manager Graham Rooke said: “From bake-offs to barbecues, there are lots of creative ways to teach kids about cooking fire safety this summer. And, it’s absolutely vital that they know what to do if the worst should happen.

“So alongside the melting, mixing and making, why not take the chance to pass on your fire safety knowhow? Test your smoke alarms as part of the activity. And remember, never leave a child alone with a hot hob, and help keep them safe by moving matches and saucepan handles out of their reach.”

And the kids don’t have to be in the kitchen to change the way you work in the summer - Distraction while cooking is a main cause of fire call-outs right across the country.

Station Manager Rooke continued: “Half of all accidental fires in the home start in the kitchen - often because of distractions like phone calls or family. So whatever happens elsewhere in the house, always make sure you have one eye on the hob or oven.”

The Fire Kills campaign’s top tips for staying safe in the kitchen this summer are:  Take care if you need to leave the kitchen whilst cooking. Take pans off the heat or turn them down to avoid risk.  If a pan catches fire, don’t take any risks – Get Out, Stay Out, and Call 999.  Double check the hob is off when you’ve finished cooking.  Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob.  Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – this can easily catch fire.  Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking. Keep matches and saucepan handles out of their reach to keep them safe.  Take care with electrics - leads and appliances away from water and place grills and away from curtains and kitchen rolls.  Keep your equipment clean and in good working order. A build-up of fat and grease can ignite a fire.  Don’t cook after drinking alcohol.  Hot oil can catch fire easily - be careful that it doesn’t overheat.  Never throw water on a chip pan fire.  In the event of a fire, have an escape plan in place.  Don’t take risks by tackling a fire. Get out, stay out and call 999.  Get at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them monthly.

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000 (four zeros) followed by the Tick symbol This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator, please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

Youth Group Since the Youth Group has been resurrected on alterative Friday evenings our numbers have been steadily increasing with children coming along for fun and frivolities. The last two get-togethers we have managed to spend the evening in the playing field, with a break mid-way for our tuck shop.

When we meet up on Friday 1st July, we’ll be putting the finishing touches to our Village Weekend “fruit themed” stall and Friday 15th July will be our final Youth Group until September when the children go back to school.

Weather permitting during the Summer holidays we’ll meet up at the field for football, rounders and a general get together for the children and adults alike – just for fun. Keep an eye on our Facebook group page ‘Yarnscombe Youth Group’ for events during the holidays.

The team would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all for your renewed support and we look forward to seeing you and more new faces on Friday 9th September.
