Thank You Yarnscombe

VILLAGE HALL

The Winfield and Reed families wish to thank everyone in Yarnscombe for their incredible kindness after loosing our beloved John, so suddenly and unexpectedly on 5th March. We are so grateful to the many people who tried to help on that morning.

CLEANER REQUIRED!

We received an overwhelming amount of cards, flowers and offers of help. There were also many generous donations for the Devon Air Ambulance and so far, we have raised just over £400 for this amazing cause.

If you are interested, please contact Karen Avery on (01805) 624834

Thanks also to the lovely ladies of the W.I for the catering and to the many friends who made cakes and biscuits for the wake. Thank you all so much.

Should anyone wish to make a donation in

memory of John, there is a ‘just giving’ page 2 laser printers available . Hopefully in fully working order. If interested, contact Pat for further information.

Notes from the Parish Council Yarnscombe Parish Council would like to thank John Turner for his many years of service in various roles within the community. From 2006 to 2007 John was our footpath warden and in August 2007 he was co-opted on to the Council. In December 2008 until May 2012 he served as Chair of the Parish Council. For many years, he had also played an active role as a member of the Playing Field Fund. John resigned from his role as councillor at our last meeting. We would like to thank him for his time and commitment and wish him all the best for the future. Due to John’s resignation we now have a vacancy in the office of Parish Councillor. You may have seen the notices around the village and/or on the website. If by 5th May ten electors of Yarnscombe Parish make a written request to the Returning Officer for an election, vacancy will be filled by holding an election, otherwise vacancy will be filled by co-option. Please write to: Returning Officer, Riverbank House, Bideford, Devon EX39 2QG At the end of May (date to be confirmed), it is once again time for the Annual Parish Meeting. Parish Council meetings, although they offer an opportunity for public participation and feedback, have to follow a certain procedure. The Annual Parish Meeting however, is an opportunity for all parishioners to express concerns, opinions without a set agenda. At the meeting, councillors will take note of issues raised, but naturally more complex issues will have to discussed at the following council meeting(s). Wow. What a final night!!! In September 2010, the wrong winner of Australia’s Next Top Model was announced; in December 2015, Miss Colombia was declared the winner of Miss Universe, wrongly; in March 2016, the wrong ‘winning’ numbers were given out for the Euro lottery. So what do these have in common with the Yarnscombe Quiz League? On the final night, April 2nd, Hope Springs Eternal were declared the overall trophy winners after a tie-break question. However, in the excitement and euphoria of an evening which saw ten teams taking part, I miscalculated the final scores and Spud Heads should have been acknowledged as the rightful quiz wizards by one point. So the following Saturday the correct champions were crowned and duly presented with The Pig. TEAM

A Letter From The Vicar Prayer Week The Archbishops of Canterbury and York encouraged every parish in England to join in a week of prayer this May. Here is part of what they say: “Like us, you will know that ministry is empty and barren without prayer. That is why we are taking the unprecedented step of writing to every serving parish priest in the Church of England inviting you and your people to join us in a week of prayer for the evangelisation of our nation. In the week leading up to Pentecost (May 8th - 15th, 2016) we long to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches.

Our hope is -

for all Christians to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ

-

for all of us to have confidence to share the Gospel

-

for all to respond to the call of Jesus Christ to follow Him as disciples, to live out the Gospel and to seek God’s Kingdom from day to day.”

It seemed important to us take up this invitation at a time when our Two Rivers Community is facing changes and challenges. We have been very encouraged in the last few days to see how God has been bringing the threads together and people from each church have committed themselves to open for prayer for two hours in the week before Pentecost. Many will be open throughout the week, with Prayer Stations set up so that you can drop in at any time, but each church will be manned for at least two hours at the following times: MONDAY 9TH 10.30am -12.30pm 12.30pm -2.30pm 6.30pm -8.30pm THURSDAY 12TH 9:00am – 11:00am 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Over the last month, there has been an increase in reported (to the Editors and through social media) unfriendly incidents in and around the village. Please take the time to read this page which outlines these issues. Yarnscombe is a wonderful, friendly and happy village—we all need to make the effort to keep it that way for all our friends and neighbours.

Dog Fouling

Village Parking

It would appear that the issue with regard to member(s) of the public and villagers walking their dogs around the Village and not clearing up any mess left by their pets has reared its ugly head again.

There have been a few incidents where vehicles haven’t been parked considerately around the village.

Failing to clean up is anti-social and can spread diseases. If this issue continues, there will no choice but to pass information to Torridge District Council, who are authorised, once evidence has been gathered that an owner has not cleaned up any mess left by his/her dog, to be issued with a ÂŁ75.00 fixed penalty notice.

We have an easily accessible car park at the village hall if any resident (or visitors) need to park off the road for a short period of time.

We have been asked to share this reminder to all to think about your parking habits with regard to fellow villagers, delivery vans and potential visiting emergency vehicles.

Discarded Rubbish It has been reported and witnessed this month that there was a significant amount of discarded fast food packaging, together with bottles and cigarette boxes strewn along the roadside.

Please be considerate to your friends and neighbours and clean up after your dog(s).

Speed around the Village Villagers and their visitors are reminded to watch their speed when driving through the village and along the roads into and out of the Parish.

One area that was particularly affected by this recent report was on the road out of the village past Portford Cross along to (and past) Langley Barton. In addition there has been an incident of fly tipping near Easton Moor Cross by persons unknown.

There are villagers who walk their dogs, children are out playing and riders on their horses are being put at unnecessary risk. The recommended speed limit within the village is 20mph and with the number of blind corners and mud/water on the roads not to mention the uneven surfaces around the parish, everyone needs to take care around Yarnscombe.

Lets keep our village clean and tidy and our animals safe by taking all rubbish home.

13

It is regrettable that there have been so many incidents recently it warrants a full page in this months Eagle to raise these issues.
