For the next two months I have to hold on to the reins at TDC as our Leader, Jane Whittaker has gone to Australia to visit her family.

Well it looks like spring might have arrived at last. I hope this will give our farmers and growers the opportunity to catch up and get their work schedule back on track.

John Winfield For 5 years we have seen his cheery face at regular intervals during the day - walking Morse, in all weathers, or out with Pauline and/or Edward.

So many of the villagers say the same about him: What a lovely man; such a kind man; we always enjoyed our chats with him; such a wonderful neighbour; John is always jolly; always has a smile on his face; always there with his humour and ready for a natter and a laugh!

We were all amazed by his wonderful acting skills as Baron Hardup in last year’s production of Cinderella. We knew he could sing but he thought he couldn’t act! How wrong he was!

John also brought a smile to everyone at the Sing-Along sessions at Barnstaple Library.

We shall all miss you John.

Notes from the Parish Council Yarnscombe Parish Council would like to offer its deepest condolences to the families of Derryck Cooke and John Winfield.

Village Defibrillator

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

0000 (four zeros) followed by the Tick symbol This will unlock the cabinet. The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions (Do not use in wet conditions) If you do need to use the defibrillator please let me know on 01769 560590 as I will need to replace parts and ensure it is working.

News Just In ……….

We have been told about an exciting new discovery in our wonderful parish.

Lord Alas of Yip and Lady Flora Spoi have recorded the first sighting of a new flower in their fields on the outskirts of the Village.

It has been named after Lady Flora and its full name is the “Flora Lop Daisy”.

The exact location of these rare flowers haven’t been released as the RHS have to undertake various studies to make sure it is protected.

A Letter From The Vicar Last month I travelled with some colleagues to Harrogate in North Yorkshire to attend the New Wine National Leader's conference. As a family we have attended New Wine Summer conferences (which involve camping on an agricultural show ground) for many years, and I have long appreciated the encouragement and inspiration that comes from being part of this network. You can find out more about New Wine at www.newwine.org. Let me know if you fancy joining us this summer!

The Harrogate conference was an extraordinary time. New Wine has recently had some sad and difficult news regarding its leadership, but the tone of the conference was positive and full of hope and trust in God. There were some outstanding speakers - two of which I would like to say something about. Firstly Archbishop Justin Welby who spoke to us for about an hour before getting a plane to Africa to meet the president of Burundi! A video of his talk can be found on YouTube (along with the other talks from the conference) but I want to share something of what he said. Addressing the challenges to the church in the 21st century and in answer to those who predict its near demise he had this to say to encourage us: 'The current context of uncertainty and insecurity is ideally made for the people of God…. …It is a time of rough seas for those who like windy weather!'

Think about that… his point was that Christianity grew and flourished when it was under pressure - and it still does today. The gospel says that there is a God on whom we can rely whatever comes - and the more challenging the circumstances the more relevant is this message.

Nowhere is the church under more pressure than in Syria. Another of the speakers at the conference was a church pastor from Damascus. In his country Christians are in danger every day. Many of course have fled the country, others have been killed. Some, like Brother Edward and his wife, have chosen to stay so that God's light can continue to shine in the darkness. If you use the internet I encourage you to look up 'New Wine Leadership Conference Session 8 - Brother Edward' on YouTube and listen for yourself. It is vital that we understand what many people, including Christian brothers and sisters, are going through in other countries so that we can support and pray for them. But it also helps to be reminded that God loves his people in every place and time and that he always will.

Nature Notes March can be a cruel month; one day warm and sunny, the next, cold with a bitter north-east wind. Skylarks seem to prefer the sunny days and we are lucky, in this part of the country, to be able to listen to their exquisitely beautiful song, each one sounding slightly different to the other. Until recently, the skylark was a very common bird but, since the 1970s, their numbers have dramatically collapsed, owing to changes in farming methods and the decline in mixed farms.

Once, they were so numerous that they were caught and made into lark pies, though not in parts of Scotland where it was unlucky to kill them. Thankfully, they survive here in Devon and, together with young lambs in the fields, herald the advent of spring.

My yellowhammer was perched in a solitary tree in a hedge. The same tree was used by a crow, a few days later, to issue its croaking call. Many birds, in fact, need somewhere high up, off the ground, from which to sing their songs, their mating calls, or cries of warning or defiance. Too often, such trees are missing from our neatly 'shaven hedges'. As a result I believe, many birds which might use them are missing from our fields, and find refuge in our gardens instead.

Just a thought!

Another bird, which has largely disappeared from much of Britain, is the yellowhammer. I was fortunate to spot one early in March, singing its distinctive song "a-little-bit-of-bread-and-nocheese” from the top of an isolated small tree. Its bright yellow head was easy to see even from 30 or 40yds away. This beautiful and inoffensive little bird was, for a long time, associated with the devil, in Scotland and the north of England, and was, for that totally illogical reason, persecuted severely. Crowds of youngsters would seek out Brown Owl its nest and destroy the eggs and nestlings. Let

Yarnscombe Mower & Playing Field Fund

Calling All Children!

The members of the Mower and Playing Field Fund met on Wednesday 2nd March. With a healthy balance of over £4000, we have decided that its high time the young people of the village choose some new play equipment.

As we “fund members” are all old and clueless on the needs and wants of young people, we thought it would be a good idea to invite the children of the village to put forward ideas for some new equipment to be situated both on the field and in the play area. Obviously, we’re limited to space and complying with safety standards, but we can apply for grants if the cost exceeds the money we currently have available. Please post your ideas to me at Rose Cottage.

In addition we will be looking into replacing the current storage facility for the mower.

Hopefully you have liked the changes we’ve made to The Eagle over the last couple of months. We are, however, going to have to print the Eagle text in black as it is cost prohibitive to print the whole issue in colour.. The front cover and advertisements will continue to be printed in colour.

We now have 84 followers on our Facebook page, including a few people from the Netherlands. They have been sharing Yarnscombe Village pictures that they took while visiting the village around 2010.

Annual Donations Each February we ask all households for a contribution of at least £1.00 to cover the production and printing costs of The Eagle.

A small brown envelope will be attached to the front of your Eagle that should be delivered to either of the editors or given to Barry, the postman who is willing to pick up any from “out of the village” locations.

If we don’t receive your contribution we will assume that 16 wish to receive a copy of The Eagle. you no longer
